HEALTHY CHOICES/HEALTHY LIVING An i2Flex course for students entering grades 10-12 June 25 – July 6, 2018 (8 on-line lessons and 2 face-to-face class meetings on June 25 and July 2, 1:00 p.m.

Instructor: Ms. Labrini Rontogianni, ACS Athens faculty This discussion-rich, project-based course offers an intensive study of the important health and nutrition topics necessary for all high school students to know, so that they can make informed choices to promote physical, mental and emotional health. We will study such topics as self-esteem, stress management, substance abuse, nutrition and exercise, human sexuality, sex and family planning, and STD’s. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits and satisfy the ACS Athens graduation requirement for Health.

STEAM Lab

A course for students entering grades 9-12 June 25 – July 6, 2018, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., weekdays Students will be expected to complete daily research/practice outside of class.

Instructor: Dr. Antonis Karampelas, ACS Athens faculty STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics. The STEAM Lab is the place where students come together in teams to engage in a series of hands-on/minds-on explorations — designing solutions to problems in the areas of real-data scientific investigations, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and 3-D model design, landscape design and digital art. In the process, students will develop their creativity, analytical and critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and teamwork and communications skills. The educator Eleanor Duckworth has defined the process of learning as the “having of wonderful ideas.” STEAM Lab is the perfect setting for putting her proposition into action. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits towards fulfilling the ACS Athens graduation requirement in Technology.

IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP An introductory performance course for students entering grades 9-12 June 25 – July 6, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., weekdays Students will be expected to complete daily reflection/practice outside of class.

Instructor: Ms. Carolyn Janis, ImproVibe — Athens; formerly, American Improv Theater — San Jose, CA

Improvisational theater, the process of making a performance up in the moment, has been around for centuries. Improvisation does not mean that players are unprepared. It’s just the opposite: this class will prepare students to improvise with confidence, using the life experience and brilliance that is already inside of them.

You don’t have to be funny to improvise -- Improv is about acting and reacting in-the-moment. The audience loves to see us establish and care about made up details. Knowing we’re making it up as we go along, the audience rewards in-the-moment confident choices, collaboration and vulnerable reactions more than clever ideas. Whether you sign up to perform or to just try something new, this class is designed for you. The lessons of acceptance, communication, confident vulnerability and collaboration that Improvisation has to teach us can translate to all areas of life. Improv is a great way to strengthen the “soft skills” that businesses are often looking for these days: leadership, creative thinking, teamwork, decision making, flexibility, and more.

In this course we will do a variety of exercises and play many games that will make learning these goals easy and fun. The fun and funny just happen when people improvise, and it can have a lasting effect - just ask Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Donald Glover, Amy Poehler, Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, Melissa McCarthy, Bill Murray, Kate McKinnon, or pretty much anyone that’s made you laugh on screen.

This course will culminate in a collaborative performance on Day 10.

Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits towards fulfilling the ACS Athens graduation requirement in the Arts.

Course 4

VISUAL JOURNALISM An introductory class for students entering grades 9-12 June 25 – July 6, 2018 (10:00 – 1:00, weekdays) Students should expect to complete up to one hour of on-line/individual work per day of class.

Instructor: Ms. Myrto Papadopoulos, Photographer and Documentary Filmmaker Get the skills to narrate and create a story through documentary photography, audio and video, in this 30 hour hands-on course.

Designed for beginners, this course offers the technical and creative foundations for such productions.

Skills that will be explored: - The basics on documentary photography and visual journalism.

- How to form a story: storytelling and it's parts.

- Journalism basics including researching, writing and interviewing.

- Conducting interviews and collect audio/video footage.

- Use of camera, sound and video recording.

- Collaborative shooting, recording and editing of video and audio.

Students are encouraged to supply their own digital video camera or audio recording equipment.

(Your smartphone should do the trick!) Otherwise students will have shared access to ACS Athens equipment. They will also need to provide their own portable USB drives so they can save projects and take them home. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in the Arts towards fulfilment of the ACS graduation requirement.

Enrichment courses for Middle Schoolers Course 5

WRITING IN ACTION A journey through the writing process for students entering grades 7-8 June 19 – July 3, 2018 (10:00 a.m. – 12 noon, weekdays) Instructor: Ms. Stavi Dimas, ACS Athens faculty Writing is a process of thinking and learning. We write to discover what we think and have to say, to make meaning of our experience and to communicate our thinking and our discoveries to others.

Writing in Action is a two-week writing workshop that combines exploring historical artifacts with the writing process. Athens’ museums and historical sites are filled with wonders. Students will visit a selected museum(s) and and engage with artifacts directly in a hands-on setting with a museum specialist. They will observe, measure, sketch and take notes on an artifact of their choice. They will talk, ask questions, speculate and wonder. They will solicit others’ observations and questions.

They’ll pose and discard hypotheses. And all of this experience, in addition to their personal observation and supplementary research will act as preparation for writing a formal essay on an artifact by which they have become fascinated. In the writing workshop, students will be guided through the steps of the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, peer critiquing, revising and editing, to produce a finished final draft of a well-crafted essay. They will leave the course having made discoveries about one of the city’s treasures. They will see more clearly that the writing process is a process of thinking and learning. And they will feel more confident about their ability to express themselves in a well-written essay.

Thinking is a joyful pursuit. This is a course for students who want to build on their skills in and passion for mathematics. In addition to learning mathematical skills that will be useful for further math study, students in this course will have fun facing intriguing questions, conundrums and conjectures that lead to imaginative and creative thinking. Students will experience the joy of being creative, discovering puzzle-solving techniques, sharpening their abilities to devise logical arguments, and developing a greater appreciation for various kinds of mathematics. Students in the course will visit ancient monuments, approach works of art in museums and explore nature with a mathematical eye and frame of mind. They will play games and play with ideas, solve puzzles, build things and work individually and in groups to solve challenging problems. They will not only produce original solutions to problems, but will also clearly explain their thinking. The course will be driven by student participation, presentations, discussions and lots of laughter. It will be a lively, modernday “Pythagorean Brotherhood and Sisterhood.”
