MUSIC THEORY AND PERFORMANCE Qualified ACS Athens Academy students may enroll in regular university classes in music history, theory and performance and earn ACS Athens high school credit.

Program of Classes: GE150 Introduction to Musical Theater Approaches the genre of musical theater in both analytical and creative terms. The course includes discussion of musical theater masterworks and analysis of their form and techniques. Students investigate the works’ sociological context, their content and the relationship between music, text and dance. The course will be completed with a performance/compilation of scenes from musicals studied in the term, arranged and presented by the students.

Studies important issues connected with America's music: the art of improvisation; the role of composition; innovation and tradition; individuality and style; instruments and forms. Examination of the formation of the roots of American music, and issues of race. Students will learn how to appreciate Native American music, Delta blues, country, New Orleans jazz, New York swing and bebop, Classical American music and pop if they are unfamiliar with it, and to deepen their understanding.

MU151 Piano Studio I (for beginners) (individual instruction) Introduces the basics of piano performance. Piano as a secondary instrument is designed for the student whose major performing area is not piano. The course stresses basic piano technique, use of the piano as a functional instrument, and as study of compositions representative of the major stylistic periods. This course is the primary source of preparation for the piano proficiency exam required of all music majors. Emphasis on music reading, piano technique, basic keyboard harmonization. This course teaches all major scales, applied theory, short pieces for prepared reading, easier short pieces for sight reading, and ensemble pieces.

Aspects of breathing, support, diction and a variety of vocal literature will be addressed.

The course stresses basic guitar playing techniques and provides an introduction to guitar performance.

Repertoire includes etudes, scales, arpeggios, concertos and sonatas by Tartini, Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven. Romantic compositions by Schumann, Brahms, Franck, Faure. Also includes works by modern composers such as Ysaye, Bartok, Debussy, Ravel and studies of the orchestral repertoire.

Special attention will be given on the study of basso continuo and, scales, arpeggios, etudes and excerpts of the orchestral repertoire.

Topics include the correct posture, basic elements of breathing, the vibrato, articulation, developing a practice and warm up routine. Repertoire includes baroque arias, arias from baroque oratorios and passions, lieder by Mozart Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, arias from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Weber, Wagner, Berlioz, Bizet, Gounod, Tchaikovsky; songs written by composers of the 20th century.

ACS Athens students enrolled in performance classes will be encouraged to participate in HAU student performances, recitals, and/or presentations during their time they are enrolled as special students at HAU. While they are enrolled in HAU programs, ACS Athens students will have privileges and access to the HAU events, performances and facilities that are available to regularly enrolled students.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Program of Classes: BUS305 Principles of Management (This course is offered only as an on-line course.)

Introduces students to generic management theories, principles and concepts as expressed by academics and business experts. In the course, students acquire knowledge of key management issues and functions, soft skills and management competencies. More explicitly, students learn how to critically investigate and implement management functions such as planning, organizing, directing and controlling, and develop communication, motivation and decision-making skills in a management context.

The course emphasizes real world information gathering and integrated approaches needed for successful business endeavors. The course covers entrepreneurial processes, skills such as, the mobilization and organization of resources, and business and marketing plans.

VISUAL ARTS: DRAWING

CREATE AND DEVELOP YOUR PORTFOLIO: AN INTENSIVE STUDIO COURSE IN DRAWING A specially-designed, intensive college art course for ACS Athens students who wish to explore a passion for drawing, extend the range of their skills and/or prepare a professional portfolio for art school/ university admission -- and who wish to experience learning on the campus of the leading art/design school in Athens. en.wikipedia.org The course challenges students to create an art portfolio and exercise their drawing skills while learning to draw. The work of the course will take place both indoors and outdoors, at selected locations (AKTO campus, museums, public spaces, etc). Students will begin with Life Drawing at AKTO’s main campus, covering still life and free style drawing to exercise and strengthen their drawing skills, while also practicing the use of materials. They will continue with Composition drawing at selected locations outdoors, in nature, in order to study, observe and create compositions. They will then practice Linear drawing, learning in detail from close-up, before they start their final part of the course focused on Architectural drawing, in which they will study and record architectural forms and structures outdoors on location. The course is rounded off with a bonus seminar in which students will organize the projects they have created and add prior materials into a professional portfolio that they may to present to university admission officers.

This course is ideal for high school students who are seriously thinking about studying art, art history, architecture, interior design, graphic design, or any other art & design discipline anywhere in the world at the college/university level. It is also fulfilling and useful for students who have an artistic inclination but who will not pursue a major in art. It is also an excellent oportunity for students who plan on entering the IB Visual Arts course in grade 11 to develop their skills. Students must have prior training in linear and freehand drawing, or must attend an intensive short course in these techniques.

Course Structure 1 Life Drawing Sessions 1-3 (four hours each) Introduction to the theory and the principles of design; a general view of the field of applied arts (from aesthetic, technical and expressive viewpoints); combinations and compositions using a variety of materials; applications for the development of students’ aesthetic sense and creativity.

2 Composition Drawing Sessions 4-6 (four hours each) Location drawing outdoors in nature, observation of environment and surroundings, while learning how to depict, select and record compositions. Personal choice of coloring materials. Classes will take place at the AKTO facilities on the Evelpidon campus.

3 Linear Drawing Sessions 7-9 (four hours each) Introduction to the fundamental principles of linear drawing, and exercises on grid, drawing views, sections and floor plans. Classes will take place at the AKTO facilities of the Evelpidon campus.

4 Architectural Drawing Sessions 10-12 (four hours each) With the acquired practice on observation, composition, and drawing skills, architectural drawing sessions will take place outdoors. A study on form and structure, combined with personal sense of composition and choice of coloring materials.

5 Bonus: Development Seminar One lecture-workshop (two hours) This seminar entitled Fundamental Promotion Skills in Design, which clarifies the purpose of portfolios and presents a number of strategies for their creation and development. The students will apply the lessons of this seminar to the portfolios they have created over 12 weeks, and add prior material as well.

During the time of the Create and Develop Your Portfolio program, the student will be considered as a member of AKTO’s student community and will enjoy all of the privileges of AKTO’s full time students: including access to all of AKTO’s workshops, libraries, talks, screenings and in-faculty shop discounts. Students will be informed of all of our school’s services and facilities and will be encouraged to make good use of them throughout the program Should participants in the course wish to enroll at AKTO within a period of two (2) years from their graduation from ACS, AKTO will deduct the sum of 470 euros net from the fees of any full-time program of study; AKTO will also credit participants academically upon enrolment in any full-time, Open Learning or Distance Learning program of study, the amount of that academic credit depending on their aptitude and dedication in the course.

The Institute for Innovation and Creativity at ACS Athens is committed to developing programs that bridge the high school and college/university experiences of our students. The Experiencing College Life program is designed to provide mature ACS Athens sophomores and juniors the opportunity to experience US college life first-hand. In the course of a week’s travel to the United States from April 25 - May 4, 2013, participants will spend a day each on 6 college/university campuses in the New England area that they and their counselors have identified as possible “good fits” for their individual talents, skills, interests and personalities. Participants will be matched with college hosts, attend one or two classes*, take a campus tour, eat lunch in campus dining halls and have a group meeting with admissions officers and/or representatives of international student offices at each school they visit. Participants will be accompanied to Boston and throughout their stay by two members of the ACS Athens faculty. They will stay in a Boston hotel and travel by public transportation.

Throughout the week, they will have the opportunity to explore the rich array historical and cultural sites of Boston. (*Because ACS Athens’ spring break is very late this year, classes may not be in session at some of the universities and colleges on the itinerary.)

Depending upon student interest, visits can be arranged at: Babson College, Bentley University, Berklee School of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis University, Brown University, Clark University, Emerson College, Harvard University, Holy Cross, MIT, Northeastern University, Providence College, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams University, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Quinnipiac University, Stonehill College, Tufts University, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Yale University. If there is sufficient interest, one-day can be set aside to visit schools in the 5-College Area around Amherst/Northampton: Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, University of Massachusetts in place of a visit to New Haven.

This list represents a rich mix of small and large schools, urban and small town campuses, research universities and liberal arts colleges, schools with highly competitive and less competitive admissions policies, arts schools and engineering schools, public and private schools.
