y d u J ACROSS THE LENS

A Journe There’s a Chinese saying that begins like this: “Dragons breed dragons and phoenixes breed phoenixes”, which can be interpreted as whoever the parents are, their offspring will become like them. By extension, the family origin of someone plays a role in the growth of that person.
With this saying in mind, a certain expectation can be imposed on young children who grew up in nonprivileged families, making them believe that a bright future is not possible at all for themselves. When a certain expectation is imposed on young children, what results can arise? The most obvious results are to either fit into that expectation or to oppose. In Judy’s case, she chose the latter.

Despite having grown up in community housing and having attended school characterized by frequent police presence, Judy worked industriously as she believed that education was the route to fight against poverty. With that belief, she graduated from her high school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program to embark on a scientific adventure at the University of Toronto (U of T) specializing in immunology. After getting her U of T degree, she studied at Michener Institute of Education to become a medical laboratory technologist (MLT).
With already a degree and a diploma under her belt, Judy pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Laurier University to increase her knowledge in finances as she felt that this knowledge could be applied to any management position, no matter which industry.
Talent
Now working at a large teaching hospital in downtown Toronto, Judy, as a MLT, examines various features of a blood cell to see if she needs to notify other health care professionals about certain findings, which in turn, help patients determine the best approach to improving their health. Judy explains that there are 5 streams under the MLT field: (1) microbiology, (2) hematology, (3) histology, (4) blood transfusion, and (5) chemistry. While she is trained to perform in any of the 5 streams, she enjoys the mix of automated and manual work that her current work presents. As if Judy doesn’t have a lot on her plate already, she wears another hat by being a Project Manager for one of the U of T research projects where her team of upper-year students in civil engineering and building sciences study the impact of building design on people’s well-being. This project covers areas such as lighting, humidity, temperature, and air quality etc.
Although Judy is responsible for managing the finances and thus uses her MBA knowledge, she ends up learning about the study itself. For example, because concrete does not trap heat well, developers avoid adding balconies to new condominiums. Another example is that some thermostats are locked between a temperature range and this characteristic begs the question if people should have control over their own environment. Besides her MLT and Project Manager roles, Judy gives back to her community by volunteering at one of the U of T’s summer camps focused on STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education, which is one of the camps that she had attended as a high school student. She has taught students how to extract DNA from strawberries as well as how to input a jellyfish’s gene into E.coli to grow under UV light given the right environment.
opportu Diving into her beliefs, Judy gradually nurtured her self-confidence and turned her passion towards the medical field, where she was determined to apply what she learned to practical use by helping the public to achieve a more desirable living environment, thus promoting societal progress.
Because of all these experiences, Judy was nominated for the Across U-Can Youth Awards and was one of the recipients of the Across U-Can Grow Awards during its inaugural year. For someone who now has received a lot of higher education and wears multiple hats, Judy wants to tell her younger self to give herself a chance to explore something first prior to saying no instantly. What’s important is to try something and then stop if she happens to not enjoy that something and to take advantage of the opportunities.
