t is good to be breathing the air of spring, its smells subtly changing day by day as the snow melts and trees bud. Across the Lens have in previous issues presented stories of youth who had clearer directions and career paths. For the two stories in this issue, we are focusing on the uncertainties they face, and how they face them. All of us have probably faced uncertainties when choosing university programs, struggled between program majors, or hesitated when 1

facing important decisions. How did we survive those weeks or months of indecision and doubt? And how can we support youths around us who are at these crossroads? This issue’s colourful cover is an illustration by Hong Kong newcomer Ying Siu. Titled Tiny Room, it is full of wonderful details where stories and meanings are embedded. The illustration takes on another level of meaning when one considers its context, where thousands of newcomers are adapting to a vastly different city and lifestyle. How much can a person bring over? What is left behind? I hope as we enjoy this issue, we will also begin conversations with those around us, and to share stories that delight and inspire us.

Across the Lens在前幾期中，都是訪問一些比較有明

確方向的年輕人。本期的兩個故事，則著眼在主角面臨人生路上的疑惑，以及他們如何面對。

讀者們都可能在選擇大學課程時抱著疑惑，掙扎各樣

主修或專科，或在面臨重要決定時猶豫不決。我們曾經是如何度過那幾週甚至幾個月的疑惑呢？當身邊的年輕人處於這些十字路口時，我們可以如何給予支持呢？

本期彩色繽紛的封面是剛從香港到步的插畫師 Ying

Siu的作品。作品稱為 Tiny Room，它充滿精彩的細節同時盛載著對主角重要的物件，其背後的故事及意義。當我們聯想無數新移民，正在適應這遍異國的生活時，這

作品更多了一重意義。一個人可以帶多少來呢？留下了什麼呢？

希望我們閱讀今期《用我的眼睛看你的世界》的同時，

也會與我們周圍的人聊天，分享有趣和可以互相啟發的故事。

Can you tell us about yourself and your background as an illustrator? My name is Ying Siu. I graduated from ArtCenter College of Design in California majoring in Illustration and I used to be an illustrator in Hong Kong. I have been in Toronto for about 5 months. I am now doing freelancing and teaching art in a studio in Richmond Hill. Can you tell us more about the work? This is a long-term ongoing project. It first started when my friends in LA complained how small their rooms were. From my perspective as a Hong Konger, everything in North America is HUGE. It inspired me to draw a super compact bedroom and later it developed into a series. This purple yellow room is my best friend’s room in Hong Kong. Apart from objects that she owned, I also put in some things that I think would be fun for her to have, e.g. the sculpture head humidifier.

It is interesting how the personal objects in the room relate to the girl sitting on the bed. What about your own experience in coming to Canada, what are some objects that are meaningful to you that you brought from Hong Kong? The wallet my mum made me, and a photo of me with my first group of art students in Hong Kong. I use the wallet and it follows me around every day. What are some things that you were not able to bring? There are a lot of them, haha. I would like to bring all my books and all the art supplies with me but unfortunately they are too heavy. And we look forward to see how she will observe and draw places and people she encounters in her new home in Toronto!

first met Colin Pang at a tree planting activity in October of 2021. He is not an outgoing individual, but is approachable and welcomes a good conversation. Working in urban planning in King City, Ontario since 2013, Colin shared with me his path and how he grew to enjoy the work. What program should I choose? For the first part of high school, Colin wanted to become a chef. Since that path does not require high academic standard, his grades hovered between C+ to B-. However, after interning in the kitchen for a period, he did not like the work environment. This realization threw him off-course, and he became anxious as friends were entering chosen programs in universities. Determined to continue his studies, he spent an additional year in high school to improve his grades. He narrowed down his focus but was still opened to programs that aligned to his interests in business, psychology and history. That year was a tough year for him when many of his friends had left high school. He also had to face his relatives’ and his own pressure of the uncertainty ahead. But his efforts paid off when he was finally admitted into Ryerson’s Urban Planning program.

“I barely got in with my grades. There wasn’t a single subject that I really wanted to study. Urban planning was very new to me. It was somewhat popular at the time. Honestly, part of my motivation was to make money to contribute to my family.” Integrating multiple interests As a freshman in the program, Colin discovered that the field he chose was broad. It encompasses areas such as architecture, policy, environmental studies, engineering, and more. Students may choose to specialize in an area, or they can develop specialization after they have entered the field. While some may consider having too many interests to be distracting, Colin was able to integrate the various areas to inform his planning projects. He took on several internships during his studies which helped him to understand the work and built his interest for the profession. After graduation, he joined King City’s township as a Student Planner in 2014, progressing through various positions. Developing an interest in heritage preservation As his career progressed, Colin developed a specific interest in heritage related policies. “When I assess the impact of proposals, I 11

would look at factors such as traffic flow, school children safety, land use, environment, architecture, indigenous customs and heritage. Heritage is an area that I specialize in.” Sorting through policy was something Colin did not think he would enjoy. But situated in a real life context, he grew to appreciate policy work and developed his expertise in it. Sometimes he would spend hours diving into documents and research to piece together the context and significance of historical buildings.

Emotional Maturity in dealing with people An important aspect of the job that his university training did not prepare him for was the communication with local residents. “Local residents can be very emotional when they express their views. They become angry 12

because developments can impact them very personally”. In public meetings, or through phone calls, Colin would sometimes receive angry comments against a proposed development, and even personal attacks on his integrity. “I felt offended at first, but my manager coached me through it. You need thick skin for this job. While this is personal for them, I must not get caught up in it. Instead, I have learned to explain complicated matters to lay-people, but unfortunately people don’t always want to listen”.

The skill of facilitation and integration With the views of local residents collected, Colin weighs them alongside expert analysts to prepare a recommendation for public officials to make an inform decision. As a facilitator to the process, Colin cannot consider only one 13

perspective. Rather, he needs to be able to understand and integrate factors from various fields to make a judgment call. When it comes to teamwork, there are people who contribute according to personal perspectives or expertise, and then there are people who make communication and collaboration possible. Every team needs both types of people, and Colin belongs to the latter type. For someone who was not considered a ‘leader’ or ‘public speaker’ during his studies, it was a surprise to see Colin excel in such a role. Finding your path one step at a time Some youths figure out their paths early, while others discover it one step at a time. Looking back at Colin’s journey, some may consider his interest in cooking, teaching, psychology, history and urban planning to be ‘unfocused’. He faced both external and internal pressure to make a decision before he was ready. He kept his mind opened, persevered, and eventually discovered his interests and strengths. Colin thinks that it is not reasonable to pressure and expect youths to determine their life career in just a few years. And he advises against 14

spending four years studying something just to fulfill parents’ expectations. “Instead, you have to try things out to know. It is not a waste of time if something doesn’t work out. It doesn’t mean you have to give up an interest if it doesn’t become your career”. I asked Colin what he enjoys most about his work. He answered without hesitation “When my recommendation gets accepted, and something gets build that makes a community more complete”.

hat is it like to be in a career that is both full of excitement and instability? There are careers that are well-defined and commonly understood, with education, training and career paths that are fairly laid out for decades ahead. And there are those that are by nature, everevolving, escaping broad categorization and expectations. An art-related career is certainly one such path that is uncommon and less understood. And that is where Noelle began her journey. Learning to Paint and Learning to Think Noelle studied fine arts at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD). She enjoyed art and was good at it. Her parents have been supportive of her path.

Studying fine arts at university was at first not what Noelle imagined. There were not many classes teaching technical skills, but instead focused on concepts and theories of art which opened her to explore the value of art and her role as an artist. She explains, “there were essential questions like ‘who are you as a person’ and ‘why are you doing art’”. This aspect of artmaking enabled her to consider her identity as a young Chinese artist and enriched the meaning of her artworks.

Her expectations for a good studying and working environment came true. She had access to a studio with a good learning environment. There were galleries that opened her eyes to the wilder art world. Being downtown near Dundas Street and University Avenue, exposed her to many different 18

cultures and foods. It also gave her opportunity to spend quality time with her parents when they got off work. Over the four years of study, Noelle not only benefited greatly from the program, she also picked up numerous transferable skills. She recalls, “I learnt how to deal with people, to work with people, to give and receive criticism, to talk with professor, to read social situations, to have a perspective on life, to build my story and my own narrative”. Exploring a Career There are various paths that are common for graduates from arts programs, including working in gallery, arts organization, going into design, fashion, interior design, art education and art 19

therapy. For people who continue to create artwork, one can create for art collectors, or for exhibitions on specific topics or themes. While this range of choice seems exciting, it also requires the graduate to understand their strengths and aspirations for life. Noelle, like countless other art graduates, spent several years exploring options before deciding on a path. Some would focus on one kind of work, while others build a career that balances several kinds of work.

Noelle focused on art making after graduation, and exhibited at over a dozen exhibitions between 2015 and 2018. In 2018, she achieved a milestone in putting on her first solo 20

exhibition, Banquet of the Black Haired Maiden. The artwork on the cover of Across the Lens, Issue 7, “Mango Pudding Fish”, originated from that collection of work. But her interest was not only in creating works. In 2018, she completed a certificate in event management, and worked on several events and weddings. And in 2019, just before the pandemic, Noelle began working full-time at an art school for children and youth. She was involved in most aspects of its operations including teaching, administration, designing and cleaning. Reassessments or Doubts Noelle’s work in art making, event planning and the art school demonstrated her capability in a range of work. She needed to step back to think 21

about what to do next. Noelle described two motivations for this early career reassessment. “Sometimes you can’t help but compare yourself with friends who have a steady income”. To Noelle, art was not only something she loved to do, but it also adds value to the society. However, the value of art making was not often recognized or rewarded. It could be discouraging to see people ‘getting ahead’ while she seemed to be circling. The second motivation stemmed from her fine arts training to continually challenge and question herself. While this mentality can push people to innovate and not remain complacent, it can also be unsettling to constantly question oneself.

The excitement and frustrations of the possibilities in an artistic ‘slash career*’ was evident in Noelle’s eyes and tone of voice. Sometimes she would even entertain the idea of not making any more art. However, she concluded by saying, “You know what? It is good to pause and think sometimes, but I just have to keep making art and embrace the uncertainties.” Amidst Noelle’s description of this uncertain path, were the subtle mentions and hints of her parents’ support. Their presence seems to balance the uncertainties she faced. Making Art that Connects with People “My artworks show something about my own journey”. Her series of artwork in the exhibition Banquet of the Black Haired Maiden was an effort to explore and preserve these “iconographies closely tied to my experience as a Canadian born Chinese within the Cantonese diaspora for the future generation. In an effort to continue our traditions, stories, and lessons for future appreciation”. Noelle explained that she wanted her viewers to find a connection with her artworks, whether *‘Slash Career’- is a career where a person holds multiple jobs or titles, sometimes with multiple expertise.

it was a shared experience or a state of mind. She hoped that by sharing herself through her work, her viewers would also reflect on their own journeys. And perhaps, they may even find some kind of inspiration or motivation towards their goals. Even though Noelle struggled on her path as an artist/event planner/art teacher, she cherished this path in the arts, “To me, the honour and pleasure in being an artist is the gift of having the ability to think and observe how to fully embrace our life journeys in creative ways. Whether it’s from daily chores or doing paperwork, to being a leader, the life skills from my artistic experience have paid off heavily.” Finding Support in Uncertainties With the expansion of the creative and cultural industries, remote working, and ‘slashcareers’, Noelle’s struggles and uncertainties may be shared by more youths than we realize. She mentioned several times how she values family and friends by balancing them along with her work. Perhaps, it is this balance that has sustained her in the past, and will sustain her on the road ahead.

過一天辛勞的工作，下班後的 Asanda 滿面倦容，但在整個訪問過程中，當她談到自己如何成為

一個心靈關顧指導員時，眼中閃爍著對於這份工作的熱誠。

挑選職業當朋友或朋友的家人生病、正接受治療甚至進入臨終

關懷時，Asanda 經常會陪伴在側，她與生俱來的親和力安慰了很多人。Asanda 明白可以做到的事情不多，但她認為在場的陪伴對病人和他們的家人度過困難時期非常重要。

「 2 0 0 3 年我在醫院做行政工作。因為非典疫情，醫院

限制患者家屬進入。當時情況需要，我就當了志願者，為

不會說英語的病人翻譯。有一次我為一位剛被診斷出癌症四期的新移民翻譯，我用了最簡單的句子告訴他這個不簡單和令人震驚的消息。」Asanda 意識到除了為病人

準確翻譯外，最重要是顧及病人收到壞消息時的精神狀態。這次經驗進一步肯定了她追求理想職業的決心，於是她重新接受訓練，成為一位專業心靈關顧指導員。 26

訓練心靈關顧指導員的認證資格需要接受專科培訓和完

成數千小時實習時數。學習內容廣泛，有宗教、靈性、社

會科學、輔導和心理治療理論等，準備從業員在不同的情況下與不同的人進行心靈關顧的工作。

Asanda 補充：「心靈關顧指導員是跨專業醫療團隊的

其中一部分，她需要學習一些醫學用語以便與醫務人員溝通和瞭解患者的身體狀況，才能進行評估和建議行動計劃。」

心靈關顧指導員會在醫療、懲教和軍事機構中提供服

務，因為這些機構經常接觸到很多人在困難的處境下需

要作出生命的抉擇。Asanda 選擇了醫院作為她的工場，她進一步解釋，醫生和護士會專注於患者的身體需求，社會工作者會在治療和康復期間協助患者滿足他們的生活需求，而心靈關顧指導員會專注於患者在心靈、宗教、情感、心理健康和人際關係方面的需要。

在這個位置上，Asanda 會與患者密切合作，一同在生

與死之間找尋力量，對抗疾病。面對疾病，人們需要的不僅是藥物，當一個人心靈感到疲憊時，心靈關顧指導員

就會協助並引導他們繼續向前。「我不是直接地『給予』他們力量或答案，而是引導患者和他們的家人尋找力量，使他們以冷靜和安舒的情緒狀態度過一段最困難的人生旅程。」

一日工作快照「疾病有可能會發生在每個人身上，無一倖免，我們

都會生病」。Asanda 說：「病人通常會問一些類似的問題『 : 為什麼是我？為什麼我要承受這些痛苦？為什麼我還活著？』」

Asanda 每天為不同的病人提供輔導，有些人剛剛被

診斷出患有絕症，有些人在治療後還沒有康復。最近，她

也為因新冠肺炎而無法得到家人照顧的患者提供支持，關懷一些孤單面對疾病的患者。除了病人之外，她還需要支援患者的家庭成員，因為他們很容易感到沮喪、憤怒、否認和身疲力倦。

多元文化下的挑戰

Asanda 曾輔導一位要求安排安樂死的希臘藉病人。不管 Asanda 對生死決定的看法如何，她都尊重並認真對待每一位患者的決定。Asanda 跟這位病人進行咨詢後，確保病人是經過慎重考慮後作出的決定，隨後，她耐心

協助病人，根據他們的家庭、文化和宗教傳統，作一系列

必要安排。Asanda 說：「我很高興年輕時候加入 Across

U-hub，拓寬了我的眼界，準備自己迎接在多元文化環境中工作的挑戰。應對工作壓力心靈關顧指導員需要輪班工作並在多個機構提供服

務，他們的收入和工作時間不定。此外，新冠肺炎增加了

很多額外的措施，使 Asanda 的工作時間更加不穩定，工作量增加且壓力大。

雖然 Asanda 單獨工作的時間很多，但她背後有醫療團

隊的同行，他們緊密聯繫，不斷鼓勵和支持她。

「當我面對排山倒海的工作量時，我會祈禱讓自己冷

靜下來，預備聆聽。」她提醒自己，提供指導和幫助是她的

工作，但她更關心的是如何在情感和精神上安慰他人。她重覆強調，對患者來說，有人全心全意地在他們身邊很重要。

談到如何梳理她的壓力，她深深吸一口氣，然後說：「我

有時不知道要對我的病人說或做什麼。」

Asanda 的減壓的方法是每天下班回家後洗個澡，她形

容這是一種讓她缷下一天重擔的儀式。「我很需要安靜的時間來補充力量，我會遠足、閱讀聖經和寫日記。」工作熱誠

Asanda 的工作得到了身邊朋友的認同和支持，但她的

父母卻很擔心她不穩定的工作時間和收入。也許是上一

輩對從事幫助臨終病人的顧忌，父母擔心 Asanda 的工作

會影響她的情緒健康，幸好看見 Asanda 對工作的熱誠，他們也慢慢接受了，最近因為疫情，大家都在關注生命安全，Asanda 亦趁機會用自己的專業知識和經驗與父母談論他們晚年和臨終的安排。

人們在工作或職業中尋找什麼？很多人將理想職業與成就感、薪金、有意義，和滿足感

聯繫一起。對於 Asanda 來說，能夠幫助別人是她看得最重要的。「我感到很榮幸，因為這份工作讓我可以和不同的人一起走在他們的人生旅途上，聆聽他們的故事」。

Asanda 鼓勵年輕人考慮選擇這份工作，「雖然工作環

境並不輕鬆，但重要的是，這是一份有意義的工作。」

我

們都有很許多值得回味的青蔥歲月，譬如在無數個晚上，在被窩裏用手電筒夜追武俠小說，把自

己想像為某個角色等，都是普遍的趣味回憶。

三月中，多倫多舉行了動漫展，因為疫情取消了兩

年，今年恢復實體展覽，出席的觀眾很多，一如既往，

除了動漫作品展覽之外，在場還有很多「角色扮演者」

(Cosplayer)，為展覽增添氣氛。

對於一些動漫界的門外漢來說，看到「角色扮演者」花

很多心思，把自己打扮成動漫中的角色，他們會感到突

兀和費解，甚至有人認為這是一些年輕人無謂的休閒玩意，「冇嘢玩，揾嘢嚟玩」。事實上，「角色扮演者」並沒

有年齡限制，每位扮演者都非常投入，他們精心製作服

飾和道具的每一個細節，刻意模仿角色每一個表情和動作，細心打造自己看起來和心儀的角色一模一樣，潛入

故事創作和幕後製作之旅，並引發其他粉絲產生共鳴。他們當中有許多已經參與了很多年，每次扮演都力求突破，樂此不疲。

不足為外人道的集體行為其實不難理解他們的熱情，就像熱愛足球的人會不惜

工本搜購球衣，遠赴英國溫布萊大球場「朝聖」，和朋友

一起在酒吧觀賞比賽，沿途見到穿著相同的球衣的人，就有種「自己人」的感覺。被足球打動的不僅是球隊的技術，背後吸引著他們的，還有團隊精神、節奏和鬥志精神。

再比如熱愛音樂的人，他們平時的衣著品味會參考歌

手和樂隊的風格。他們會購買和收藏唱碟、撲演唱會門票、組織後援隊支持歌手等等。音樂有一個無形的圈把

樂迷組織起來，樂迷們被歌詞和音樂深深打動，他們之間有強烈的共鳴感，是圈外人難以理解的。

同樣的理解，解讀動漫迷和角色扮演者的行為小朋友特別喜歡閱讀漫畫，漫畫陪伴著很多人長大。

漫畫不單通俗易懂，還充滿動感，故事中的人物都面臨

著與讀者現實生活息息相關的人生選擇，如選擇朋友、理解知識、建立自我、抉擇未來、判斷是非和為自己的選擇做出犧牲等。

漫畫也是年輕人朋友圈的熱門話題。記得上小、中學

的時候，經常和朋友討論漫畫故事的內容，各人根據自

己的喜好代入不同的角色，討論和思考角色的個性，甚至繼續發展故事情節。

因此，動漫展場內穿插著眾多「角色扮演者」，他們不

僅為拍照打卡，更期望能與在場的同路人相遇，然後發出一個眼神或動作，意會大家都曾在同一部漫畫中，被角色和故事觸動過。

漫畫讓我想起了中學時看金庸小說，沒想到竟然成了

我和長輩對話的橋樑。同樣，如果我們想進入年輕人的

世界，了解他們的想法，不妨走進動漫世界，閱讀人物的故事，這將有助於我們認識年輕人眼中的世界。

hen young people choose what to study or search for a suitable job, they draw a blank. Their minds pale even more at the thought of selecting a subject or job that on the one hand reflect their passions and interests, but on the other hand is generally regarded as unpopular or leads to unstable career paths. In this issue, we share the stories of Colin and Noelle, two young people whose road to their chosen career paths were a journey of selfdiscovery. 38

For Colin and Noelle, receiving professional training in their chosen careers was only the first step, because the extent to which their professional knowledge could be developed depended on their ability to integrate it. Colin’s studies in urban planning immersed him in areas of the rational sciences, such as architecture, policy, and engineering. However, after he entered into the workplace, he also relied on effective communication skills, a collaborative spirit of teamwork, and strong emotional management skills. Noelle thought that making a living from art would be a very lonely profession. Surprisingly, she discovered that working in the arts was also about meeting people and sharing her artistic visions with different communities. Since she began working, she has done event planning, venue design, art teaching and also held numerous exhibitions, covering a very wide range of subjects and areas. She found that the understanding of her own identity was the key to develop her career. Colin and Noelle’s experiences are not unique, but their experiences are underrepresented and rarely heard in the general discourse of careers and futures. In this day and age, Colin and Noelle represent a community of voice whose experiences will have a profound impact on immigrant youth. They both emphasized that the support of parents and mentors brought them 39

different perspectives and helped shape them in different and exciting ways. We hope that by reading about their experiences, you will be inspired to pursue your own journey of finding a career that you feel passionate about.

選擇學科和前途的時候，年輕人的腦海裡往往是一片空白。當他們想到一般被視為冷門的專業和

收入不穩的工作時，他們的頭腦會變得更加蒼白。

在本期中，我們記錄了兩位土生土長的年輕人，在職

業選擇中的自我發現之旅。

從 Colin 和 Noelle 的經歷來看，接受專業訓練只是第一

步，他們能否享受和發揮專長，取決於他們的知識轉化

的能力。Colin 修讀城市規劃，他的學科包括很多理性科學，例如建築、政策、工程等，但當他進入職場後，很多

時候他亦需要良好的溝通能力、團隊合作精神和情緒管

理能力。Noelle 本以為作畫為生將是非常孤獨的職業，誰料，在短短數年的工作中，她參與了活動策劃、場地設

計、繪畫教師並舉辦了個人展覽，涉及的範圍非常廣乏。她發現，對自己身份的認定是發揮的關鍵。
