Message from Executive Director

Every Thursday night starting in March, Across Uhub will host Crafteria, a series of talks, handmade goods markets, and craft workshops.

We usually mistakenly think that we cannot possibly find time to make any handcrafts because our daily lives are already jam-packed However, we need to make time to unwind and appreciate ourselves when our schedule is hectic. Using our hands to make things is a great choice for this

Throughout the Crafteria planning process, I was astounded to discover how many young people are quietly creating their own little universes in the realm of handicrafts. Although their work is each unique in its own way, I discovered that they all share the desire to add a little surprise and sensitivity to both their own lives and those of others.
I sincerely hope you will come Even if you are not a handcrafter, we invite you to try. Let's chill and relax while making crafts every Thursday night.

An inspiring sharing by a visual effect artist
When we were preparing for the Crafteria: Craft Market guest speaker session, the staff team had a chance to sit down and had a zoom chat with Alex Leung, the visual effect artist who is currently living in Vancouver.
Although it is not my first time chatting with and hearing Alex shares his story about his career path, but there is always something new that I discover about him. Undoubtedly, Alex’s journey to becoming an FX supervisor at a well-known mainstream company in the movie industry has been full of obstacles We asked Alex how he sees himself working in a mainstream industry with his unique Chinese Canadian identity. He told us that he used a lot of effort into having common chit-chat topics with his colleague. He would watch shows and dramas that does not really interest him but he knew that he has to watch them to create a common topic that he can echo with his colleague He also told us that in order to make sure himself knows what is in trend in the industry, he has to take courses regularly to update his “ bank of knowledge”.
Of course, these examples just captured a tiny bit of how hardworking Alex is to strive for his dream as a visual effect artist. I hope the ones who attended Alex’s sharing session were able to get some inspiration from Alex’s story I sincerely invite you to drop by at the Crafteria: Craft Market on March 11,
