elcome to the December issue of Across the Lens.

This issue we explore the journey of Robin Yu, who picked up his love of music after working as a landscape architect, and taught himself to operate an online music company. This is followed by the translated version of Tony Lam’s story, who continues to pursue his love of music through a different path, and finding companions along the way. The second half consists of two writings about the Canadian winter. The first explores why our interviewees enjoy outdoor activities in the winter. This is followed by the challenges faced by new arrivals in surviving their first few winters. While younger ones seem to enjoy the winter without care, those taking on life responsibilities would understand the care it takes to meet both its challenge and pleasure. We hope you will find either inspiration or a sense of connection to these stories. The challenges of 1

starting a life in a new land are similar to all new arrivals. Perhaps that is a shared element in our Canadian identity.

ON THE PATH OF MUSIC PRODUCTION

INTERVIEWED & WRITTEN BY Celeste Cheung

O

ur interviewee today is Robin Yu, the founder and owner of Mixodus Music Production, a music production company that also provides online training. His story is an inspiration for those who thinks about developing a business out of an interest. Robin obtained both an undergraduate and master’s degree in urban planning & design in Toronto and eventually found a relevant job in Hong Kong. His professional passion slowly decreased over several years, unable to find meaning in upgrading luxury apartments unaffordable to most Hong Kong people. In 2017, he decided to return to Toronto to pick up his passion and started his music career. Like many teenagers, Robin was uninterested in music when he was younger, but was pressured by his parents to learn the piano for many years. Interestingly, after he joined a friend’s band, he picked up music again. During his stay in Hong Kong, he also took courses in music composition, arrangement and production. Gradually, he 4

developed a strong interest in music production and taught himself with books and online resources. Hero behind the scene Robin has clear goals for his business. He said, “Not many people pay attention to music arrangement. I hope to make music, teach people how to make music, provide better music recording and arrangements, and help listeners enjoy and appreciate music more. When my clients are happy with my arrangements of their songs, I get a great sense of satisfaction that was absent from my previous work.” One of his clients recently achieved good results in a song writing competition, and Robin is very happy that he is one of the heroes behind the scene. The first recording studio was born To start his career, Robin began to build a recording studio in his basement. He said: “In terms of space and noise control, it is easier and

5

more affordable to set up a studio in Canada.” Then he learned to buy the right equipment and upgrade his amateur studio to a professional recording studio. He was very proud of his handy work, so he uploaded videos to share with others what kind of equipment to choose and how to install the soundproofing materials. He emphasised that it takes much time to learn everything from website design to online marketing, “In the past nearly three years, I hardly made any music. Instead, I learnt social media marketing and got my business set up.” Robin felt that this was a satisfying and meaningful experience that he did not expect at the beginning. He also revealed that in running his music business, he actually spent more time on administrative, marketing or website-related work than on actual music production. As technology is advancing rapidly, Robin continues to read articles and listen to podcasts to improve his business and music production skills.

6

Robin puts much effort into his free Youtube channel, which has now accumulated 210,000 views. The channel takes an instructional approach and provides music production tips suitable for viewers of different levels and interests. Robin also uses live broadcasts to interact with his online course students and answer their questions. The interaction with his viewers is a source of satisfaction, and also supports enrolment to his online courses. Unlike many businesses that were negatively impacted by the COVID-19, Robin’s business was positively affected because it has operated online even before the pandemic. As a result, both his service and student base expanded. Why Robin uses Cantonese in his course? Robin observed that most online resources for music production are in English, and hardly any is in his mother-tongue Cantonese. Where many saw Cantonese to be a limitation, Robin saw it as a unique market with potential, and the gradual expansion of his business is proving him right. His clients, students and viewers are from around the world including Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia and Southeast Asia. The deeper motivation behind the focus on Cantonese is to introduce more people to appreciate Cantonese music, “Many Cantonese songs have profound lyrics, and the music also has a unique groove. There are many subtle 7

elements in the background which brings out their melody”. When analyzing Cantonese songs, he found that some chord progressions are actually quite complex and interesting, worthy of appreciation. He feels that many listeners overlook the accompaniment of Cantonese music because their attention is focused on the singers. Therefore, Robin produced music analysis and appreciation videos for his channel, “I really want people to understand good composition, mixing and arrangement, so that they can use them as references for future projects.” Tips for those interested in music production “Do it, don’t just watch videos without putting your skills into practise.” He also suggested, “Don’t spend all your effort in perfecting one song, you can gain more experience and skills from working with multiple songs. Once you start a project, you will be able to develop some knowledge, and you can apply them to your next and so on”

8

What success is to him? Letting out a deep breath, Robin said that he is thankful for simply being able to make a living with what he likes. Throughout the interview, we could feel Robin’s sense of ownership and pride as a music producer and entrepreneur, which is an inspiration to all of us who likes music. He is currently looking to develop more Cantonese online courses, and we wish him continued success in his business and future projects.

WHO SAYS WE ARE TOO OLD TO DREAM INTERVIEWED BY Joel Lam & Tiffany Ore WRITTEN BY Katy Cheung TRANSLATED BY Karman Ho

D

o you still remember your dream? Or has it drifted away?

As you age, you go through life stages from studying to working, and to taking charge of your whole life. As you progress, do you still remember how you first envisioned your ideal life? Or have you been too busy in the day to day that you have forgotten about your passion and pursuit? Tony has become a father of two. To other people, continuing to aspire to be a musician at this stage is unrealistic. However, Tony never gave up the determination to pursue his dream. Your dream is waiting. It’s calling. Eighteen years ago, Tony participated in a youth leadership training camp. At the time, he felt very moved by the theme of the camp and wrote a song called “Our Lives Are Crossed.” The lyrics say 10

that we were initially strangers, each with our own language and cultural background. Yet from the moment we met, we became a part of each other’s growth, walking hand in hand, supporting and encouraging one another. Amazingly, two years ago, when this song was played once again in the youth leadership training camp, the campers felt a strong connection to the song. Just like the lyrics described, these new campers were international students from different countries, speaking different native languages. When Tony led the group in singing “Our Lives Are Crossed”, everyone sang whole heartedly in response to their hopes of journeying with one another from that moment forth. This experience deeply moved Tony, and that love of music within his soul was awakened.

11

Companions in the Journey After the camp, Tony eagerly wrote songs again and participated in a music composition competition. Even though the result was not ideal, he gained much in the process. First, he rekindled his enthusiasm to pursue his dream. He deeply believes that pursuing one’s dreams requires courage, and he hopes his actions can encourage those around him to step outside of their comfort zones to pursue their dreams. Second, during the competition, Tony encountered someone with a similar background: a husband and father who also participated in the contest to pursue his own dream. Sharing these commonalities, they had meaningful interactions and learned from each other, accompanying each other on an otherwise lonely journey. Even though he lost in the competition, Tony gained friendship and reignited his motivation to continue his music. Reconnected with buddies During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tony joined the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Virtual Marathon. It not only strengthened his resilience, but also gave him an opportunity to revisit his past experience during his youth. He reconnected with buddies he grew up with and reflected together on what they have gained from the organization. Throughout the 31-days marathon, every time Tony completed his daily target, he would share on 12

social media the distance he ran, the fundraising website, and a song to his followers. Tony said, “This allowed me to share my joy and encourage other participants. Most importantly, it connects my dream into other aspect of my life.” Courage to Dream The global pandemic in 2020 changed how people interact, now spending more time with families and less with colleagues and friends. We save much commute time and gain more opportunities to be alone; often to examine and reflect on our lives. Being so near to virus, sickness, and death, we suddenly realize that life and death is not within our control. Tony also perceived the impermanence of life, that everything he was certain of in the past has changed. However, these uncertainties did not depress him. Instead, it compelled him to make the most of his time, to live in the moment, and to pursue his dream.

13

In this period of sudden, drastic change, Tony believes in acting on our love for people we treasure, expressing it bravely so that they know. As for music, he urges music lovers to make music without reservation. Love is the motivation for him to overcome his fears and the guidance that leads him to develop himself. When Tony leaves this world, he refuses to only leave behind worldly possessions without also leaving behind wisdom and stories that inspire others. Dream, Courage, Love, and Companions Tony said, “The path towards our dreams often leads us to unexpected people and events, it is like a treasure hunt and an adventure. When you are on the path whole heartedly, you may sometimes feel gloomy or lost because of the uncertainties ahead. But there is also joy in journeying on your chosen path, for every moment along the way is full of meaning and memory. When you face obstacles, do not be afraid and do not forget that help will come. Perhaps the result may be different from what you imagined, but we follow our dreams not only for the successes, but also for the process.” Reading Tony’s story made me reflect on an old saying – “People need to dream”. We not only need to dream, but the courage, love, and companionship to pursue it.

INTERVIEWED & WRITTEN BY Samson Wong

Wallace Wong

Wallace

Felix Tang

INTERVIEWED & WRITTEN BY Samson Wong

T

he goal of the first online book “Across the Lens: Stories of You and Me” published in February this year is to help people fight the pandemic, encourage and support each other, and strengthen our resilience. By reading the real-life stories, the reader will gain positive energy and build courage to face adversity in life. As a result, the concept of continuing to publish real-life storybooks was conceived. Online real life storybooks are not intended to replicate the virtual life that modern people have become accustomed to on the Internet. On the contrary, the books aim to encourage everyone to put aside the fast-paced and overwhelming virtual life for a few moments. The book encourages readers to re-enter real life, slow down, and spend more time reading real stories from different fields and different life experiences. It is our hope that these stories induce deep thinking and selfreflection.

25

In the past twenty months of fighting the pandemic, the journey has been full of difficulties. However, there has been no shortage of new experiences from which we learn and grow. We have experienced the impermanence of our current situation, but also understand what it means to cherish the moments of stability. The severe winter is really hard to deal with, and many people do not want to face the prospect of a long season of cold. In this issue, we explore the experience of weathering the cold from the perspective of several immigrants. I hope these stories resonate with you. Whether this is your first winter or fiftieth winter, withstanding the cold allows us to gradually gain a unique strength in persistence and resilience. As you read the real-life stories, we hope you will find and reflect on the connections between us.
