elcome to the October issue of Across the Lens, I am the new Editor-in-Chief Samson Wong.

How long have you been in Canada? I spent 16 years studying from primary school to university, then returned to Hong Kong for another 16 years.

Returning to Canada, it seems that the Chinese community has been evolving. We seem to have found a better footing in what was once a foreign land.

Compared with the 90s and 00s, the older ethnic enclaves no longer seem so clear cut; many people seems to have physically step out of these ‘comfort zones’. Behind such movements are the mental shedding of uncertainty and insecurity that is characteristics of immigrant communities. The stronger your roots, the farther you reach.

This issue presents two people in professions not common to Chinese: the spiritual care practitioner Asanda Cheung, and visual arts school owner/ teacher Kanson Lee. What inspired and compelled 1

them into these careers? These are followed by a translated version of Larry Law’s sharing that takes us back to the earlier days of COVID-19.

Finally, the story of Across U-hub’s September tree planting activity provides a moment of reflection on our sense of ‘rootedness’.

A

sanda joined the Zoom interview after work and traffic. Even though she was tired, her passion for her work cannot be hidden when she told us how she became a spiritual care practitioner.

Choosing this career The year was 2003. “I was working in hospital administration at the time. As SARS broke out, family members of patients were not permitted to enter the hospital. Therefore, I also served as an interpreter to assist those unable to speak English.

One day, I was asked to interpret for a new immigrant who had been diagnosed with stage four cancer. I had to use simple and straightforward language to tell him the shocking news.” One year later, Asanda met this man again, who was in a much weaker state. Because of the language barrier, it was difficult for him to express his feelings.

Asanda has always had a natural affinity to stand by and support friends during sickness or the death of their family members. These experiences 4

gradually compelled her to train and pursue a career as a spiritual care practitioner. In this position, she can work closely with patients as they find strength in traversing the processes of healing, life and sometimes death.

In the face of illness, people need more than just medicine. When someone is exhausted emotionally and spiritually, a spiritual care practitioner will assist and guide them to move on. “I am not there to ‘give’ strength or answers, but to guide patients and their families to find strength, and perhaps a more comfortable end to life”.

Training Spiritual care practitioners are specially trained to work in medical, correctional and military settings, where people face immense pressure and sometimes make life-determining decisions.

Asanda chose the hospital as her workplace. She explained that while doctors and nurses focus on the physical aspects of patients, and social workers assist with bureaucracy and logistics, 5

spiritual care practitioners focus on aspects encompassing spirituality, religion, emotions, mental health and human connection.

The training and certification of spiritual care practitioners require both academic studies and thousands of practice hours. A range of subjects, including religion, spirituality, social sciences, counselling and psychotherapeutic theories, are taught as a foundation to support practitioners to work with different people in various situations.

Asanda also added that she had to learn medical terminologies, and not simply converse in lay terms. “Practitioners are part of an interdisciplinary team of medical staff. Therefore, I have to understand patients’ medical conditions to contribute to assessments and recommend action plans.”

Snap shot of a week’s work Over a week, Asanda may counsel a person who had just been diagnosed with cancer, or another who had gone through treatments without success. She supports patients who have been separated from their families due to COVID-19

and those heading to an empty home. Often, she also supports patients’ family members who are frustrated, angry, in disbelief, or simply exhausted.

“Illness happens to everyone without exception; we all can get sick”. Asanda said, “Patients usually ask similar questions: ‘Why me? Why am I suffering? Why am I still alive?’”

Challenges in a multi-cultural society Asanda once worked with a Greek patient who requested medical assistance in dying.

Regardless of her own views, Asanda first provided consultation to ensure that the decision was not made lightly. Then, she proceeded to assist the patient in making the necessary arrangements according to family, cultural and religious tradition.

Asanda said, “I am glad to have joined Across U-hub when I was younger. The training and activities broadened my view in a multi-cultural society, which prepared me to face the challenges today.”

Although Asanda works alone much of the time, she receives regular support from her fellow medical staff team. She can discuss different cases with the team, sharing her experience on one hand, and gaining support at the same time.

Dealing with the strain of work The strain of her work is overwhelming. Like many spiritual care practitioners, she earns 7

income by working in shifts and providing personal services in multiple organizations. In addition, COVID-19 has restricted the employment opportunities of practitioners, and the working hours of Asanda have become more unstable and irregular.

She has felt helplessness: “I did not know what to say or do with my patients.”

“When I face an overwhelming situation at work, I pray to calm myself down and get ready to listen.

I find that being present wholeheartedly is of great significance to the patients.” She reminds herself that while providing guidance and assistance is her duty, human connection is the key to comforting her patients emotionally and spiritually.

Asanda takes a shower every time she returns home from work—a personal ritual to unburden herself. “I also find strength in quiet time, hiking, reading the Bible, and writing a journal.”

Passion for her work While her friends are supportive of her work, her parents worry about her unstable work hours.

Perhaps being from a different background, they cannot fully grasp the nature of her work. Yet, this did not discourage her from using professional knowledge to take care of her parents. Recently, she discussed end-of-life decision-making with them in light of the pandemic.

As many long-time practitioners have retired at the onset of COVID-19, Asanda encourages younger people to consider this path. “Even though working conditions are not easy, it is important and meaningful work.”

What do people look for in a job or a career?

It may be a sense of achievement, a salary, to do something meaningful, and to do something enjoyable. For Asanda, it seems that the human connection is what she values most. “I feel honoured to have walked with different people in their journey, hearing their story”.

幾

年 前 因 為 籌 備 Across U-hub 舉 辦 的 一 個 活 動「 : 造 藝埸」 （ Crafteria ) 認 識 了 Kanson 並 探 訪 了 他 的 畫

室。自 問 從 小 時 就 沒 有 藝 術 天 份，對 畫 畫 不 感 興 趣，美 術 科 目 分 數 很 低，所 以 我 很 佩 服 畫 家 能 夠 輕 易 地 繪 畫 出 不 同 的 物 件 或 以 不 同 顏 色 去 豐 富 一 幅 畫。

K a n s o n 跟 很 多 華 裔 學 生 一 樣，小 時 候 會 參 加 繪 畫 興

趣 班，有 空 時 就 會 在 紙 上 亂 畫，但 稱 不 上 真 正 學 美 術。 直 到 他 1 6 歲 才 正 式 上 繪 畫 班，由 基 本 功 開 始。在 高 中 時 期，Kanson 主 修 科 學 或 數 學，沒 有 想 過 自 己 的 未 來 可 以

跟 藝 術 扯 上 一 點 關 係。從 一 點 興 趣 開 始，利 用 課 餘 時 候， 他 在 一 間 畫 室 做 義 工 教 小 朋 友 畫 畫，這 些 經 驗 確 定 了 他 對 美 術 有 更 濃 厚 的 興 趣。Kanson 能 夠 走 到 今 天，他 十 分 感

謝 父 母 親 的 支 持 和 開 明 思 想，讓 他 在 大 學 修 讀 藝 術 及 相 關 的 科 目。

但 到 大 學 最 後 一 年，雖 然 家 人 沒 有 給 他 壓 力，Kanson 卻

開 始 為 自 己 的 前 途 感 到 十 分 擔 憂，擔 心 畢 業 後 未 能 以 自 己

的 專 業 找 到 工 作。因 長 時 間 處 於 高 壓 中，Kanson 的 身 體 終 於 捱 不 過 來 而 發 出 紅 色 警 號。當 時 他 只 好 把 愛 好 暫 時 放 10

下，先 把 自 己 的 身 體 照 顧 好。在 大 學 畢 業 後 不 久，幸 好 得 到 朋 友 的 幫 助 下，Kanson 很 快 便 找 到 了 一 份 工 作。

日 復 一 日 的 工 作 沒 有 消 磨 了 Kanson 對 畫 畫 的 熱 情，也

因 為 有 信 仰，有 一 天 他 感 覺 到 神 的 呼 喚，清 楚 知 道 自 己 應 該 要 好 好 善 用 自 己 過 往 修 讀 的 專 業，用 美 術 去 感 染 周 圍 的

人。他 毅 然 辭 去 工 作，開 始 在 家 裏 教 畫 畫。由 一 開 始 只 有 一 至 兩 名 學 生，到 後 期 收 讀 的 學 生 人 數 足 以 稳 定 資 金 的 情 況 下，開 辦 自 己 的 畫 室，中 間 都 經 歷 過 幾 年 的 高 高 低 低。

Kanson 坦 言，開 辦 畫 室 和 教 畫 絕 對 不 是 一 件 容 易 的 事，

從一開始不知道怎樣正確地讚揚或指出學生的進步空間 和 如 何 制 定 出 適 合 學 生 的 教 材，到 現 在 要 處 理 畫 室 行 政 上

的 事 情，每 一 天 都 還 在 學 習 中。但 他 十 分 享 受 能 夠 把 他 對

美 術 的 喜 愛 與 學 生 分 享，一 同 創 作 更 多 畫 作。他 亦 認 為「 藝術是源於生活的」 ，很 鼓 勵 畫 室 的 同 學 在 生 活 中 尋 找 靈 感。

Kanson 十 分 感 激 在 畫 室 開 幕 初 期，周 邊 的 人 對 他 的 支

持。身 邊 不 同 的 人 都 分 別 捐 贈 不 同 物 品 和 器 材，助 他 節 省 了 不 少 開 支。他 亦 特 別 提 到 在 籌 備 開 辦 畫 室 遇 到 的 第 一

個 合 作 夥 伴，是 一 位 剛 剛 修 讀 完 藝 術 治 療 專 業 的 朋 友。他 們 倆 不 謀 而 合，都 希 望 透 過 藝 術 和 美 術 去 支 持 一 些 有 需

要 的 學 生 和 他 們 的 家 人。也 因 為 這 樣，他 把 畫 室 命 名 為

Artnection（ Art ＋ Connection )，一 個 可 以 讓 家 長，學 生， 甚 至 老 師 去 了 解 和 認 識 藝 術 的 地 方，在 那 裡 互 相 啟 發，連 繫，把 美 術 這 一 團 火 繼 續 去 燃 點 他 人。

訪 問 當 中，Kanson 有 一 席 話 令 我 印 象 十 分 深 刻，他 說 ：

「 藝 術 是 沒 有 分 對 錯 的，誰 說 你 能 畫 到 一 個 完 整，栩 栩 如 生 的 蘋 果，就 是 一 個 好 的 畫 家。為 什 麼 不 能 加 入 自 己 的 獨 特 的 見 解 和 想 法，去 讓 這 個 蘋 果 變 得 獨 一 無 二。不 要 與 別

人 比 較 誰 的 畫 作 較 好，反 而 應 該 享 受 和 學 習 畫 畫 的 過 程， 用 心 去 感 受。」

在 訪 問 的 後 段 問 到 新 冠 疫 情 對 畫 室 的 影 響，Kanson 無

奈 地 笑 笑 並 回 答「 : 影 響 很 大，大 到 想 哭。疫 情 影 響 了 畫 室

接 近 七 成 的 收 入，但 租 金 卻 不 變，感 到 十 分 吃 力。但 另 一 方 面 也 因 為 疫 情，令 我 可 以 有 空 閒 下 來 的 時 間，反 省 和 重 新 學 習 理 財 ， 並 重 組 管 理 及 營 運 畫 室 的 策 略。」 12

Kanson 的 教 學 理 念 從 來 不 只 是 單 單 教 學 生 一 些 畫 畫

技 巧，而 是 希 望 學 生 可 以 透 過 美 術 去 表 達 他 們 想 表 達 的， 去 連 繫 周 圍 的 人。在 這 一 次 短 短 的 訪 問，我 深 深 感 受 到

Kanson 對 美 術 的 熱 情 和 抱 負。我 亦 從 他 身 上 看 到 並 找 回 自 己 的 初 心，提 醒 自 己 當 初 為 什 麼 決 意 在 大 學 修 讀 教 育 有 關 的 專 業。

he menacing COVID-19 pandemic has caused many people to start reflecting on the value of their lives and things that they took for granted in the past. Under the implementation of social distancing restrictions, it is not only the physical distances between people that have increased; gradually the relationship between people has also distanced.

Long before the pandemic outbreak, Larry Law had recognized the importance of relationships and the influence that people can have over each other.

Larry said, “If you treat others well, others may spread the love. You can’t just talk about it; you got to practise it. This is what God wants to see.”

Larry demonstrates love and care in the resort hotel he runs. “Being kind to employees” is recognized as a good thing, but it is difficult to actually do it, and he admits that he had encountered many difficulties. Despite the 14

company attempting to lead with the values of love and care, he recounted how a cleaning staff approached him about a manager that treated staff unkindly. After hearing this, Larry immediately launched an investigation and found out that the manager in question was the general manager’s wife. Both of them indeed didn’t treat the employees kindly. Larry was in a difficult position, but in order to keep his promise, he decided to dismiss them.

This decision also meant that Larry had to learn from scratch and work as the general manager until a new staff is hired. He thought, this is God’s will to allow him to learn this, and to put into practice the biblical principle of “Do what is fair and just to your neighbour, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourself too seriously— take God seriously”. He believes that doing so can promote a closer relationship between people and even with God. 15

Larry thinks that the most important thing is to do the right thing, and this is his personal principle when being with those around him. Once, a family whose father had cancer stayed at the resort. To better accommodate them, Larry upgraded them to a private suite for free. He believed that money cannot measure the relationship between people, and his decision was to follow the path opened by God towards goodness. He emphasized that the value of work lies in the pursuit of higher life values outside of work, and that is more precious than the money you can earn. Larry has always been working towards this goal.

He believes that it’s faith that allows him to treat employees like family; he describes this as a “servant leadership” management approach. And when employees experience kindness, they will treat guests like family as well and closely care for their needs.

Larry remembers a case that had touched him.

Because of sudden changes in the weather one winter day, a group of athletes were stuck at the ski facility and could not go home. Larry’s front desk staff learned about their situation and took the initiative to make arrangements for them to spend the night in the hotel lobby and provided breakfast the next morning. Simply retelling this story seem to have brought a tear to his eyes.

The devastating COVID pandemic has brought various challenges to Larry’s business. Under 16

the lockdown, the resort was forced to close and Larry’s initial thoughts turned to the employees. He made a decision to not dismiss the employees and promised to maintain 90% of their compensation.

This timely policy helped many of them cope with immediate needs and demonstrated love and care for his employees. At one point Larry was worried because he has not yet calculate the amount of subsidies, but he believed in God’s leadership and continued to lead with courage. Finally, the government financial aid had arrived which helped him overcome the challenge.

During the pandemic, Larry’s daughter sewed masks and donated them to medical staff and Larry’s employees. His daughter’s initiative warmed and compelled him to source masks to donate to those in need. Larry thinks that this incident has proven that people can influence each other without any boundaries, and children can influence their parents.

Larry has been thinking: as a Christian business owner, how can I do more to give back to the society? Once he received a call from the mayor, asking if he can provide shelter for homeless people. In other people’s eyes, the typical homeless person is disoriented and dirty, and therefore many hotels refuse them entry for fear of harming employees and damaging the hotel’s reputation.

However, when Larry consulted his staff, they gave their support and agreed to the mayor’s request.

Also, inspired by the joy of his employees during company parties, Larry started to prepare food baskets and collaborated with the local church to send them to families in need. Food baskets are affordable, and the joy could be shared as a family. He also extended invitations to past hotel guests to sponsor the food baskets, to pass on the care and kindness they experienced at the resort.

The involvements and responses received were overwhelming.

Larry believes: “God has given me the opportunity to accomplish these good deeds and feel the joy of life. Having gone through these difficult times, my life has become more centered and resilient”. At the end of the interview, Larry encouraged everyone: “No one can guarantee what the future will look like. As long as it is in line with God’s will, the right things should go ahead with courage, because God would make arrangements for what is best for you.”

Larry hopes that his charity could become a role 18

model for other businesses and that others would treat their employees kindly, while showing love and care in the workplace and giving back to the society.

「一 到 十 分，你 覺 得 自 己 植 根 加 拿 大 有 多 深 ?」 這是我們在植樹活動中向參加者拋出的第一道問題 。 九 月，一 個 週 六 早 上，列 治 文 山 北 邊 陽 光 充 沛，帶 點 清

涼，十 幾 位 年 輕 人 在 AcrossU-hub 集 合。在 戶 外 停 車 場

等 待 巴 士 來 臨 之 際，他 們 當 中 有 些 人 好 奇 地 探 看 周 圍 陌 生 的 臉 孔，也 有 些 活 潑 的 成 員 開 始 自 我 介 紹，互 相 閒 聊 起

來。早 上 八 點 半，此 刻 充 滿 期 待 卻 又 稍 微 靦 腆 的 他 們，能 想像到自己在下午四點半離開時那依依不捨的心情嗎?

隨 著 黃 色 校 巴 到 達，驚 嘆 和 歡 笑 隨 之 而 來。也 許 是 秋 風

送 爽，也 許 是 有 機 會 到 戶 外 走 走，我 們 對 這 趟 旅 程 似 乎 都 很 興 奮。

三 十 分 鐘 車 程 過 後，我 們 來 到 Saigeon Trail，先 進 行 了

活 動 簡 介 和 熱 身 遊 戲。雖 然 遊 戲 開 始 的 時 候，大 家 都 顯 得

有 點 尷 尬，但 熱 身 過 後，參 加 者 都 變 得 熟 絡。隨 著 遊 戲 開

展，我 們 本 來 懷 有 猶 豫 和 保 留 的 神 情 與 肢 體 語 言 都 在 秋 日 陽 光 下 蒸 發 掉 了。

Conservation Authority) 職 員 向 我 們 講 解 如 何 植 樹，並

且 透 過 植 樹 去 確 保 本 地 生 物 多 樣 化。我 們 兩 三 個 人 一 組， 拿 起 鏟 子、手 套 往 山 坡 處 開 始 任 務。

我 們 是 一 群 習 慣 身 處 在 室 內，不 喜 歡 活 動 的 人，植 樹 是

一 種 超 乎 平 常 的 體 能 挑 戰，但 大 家 都 樂 意 努 力 勞 動。事 實 上，日 光 確 實 讓 人 汗 流 浹 背，職 員 每 隔 數 分 鐘 就 提 醒 我 們 要 稍 休 補 充 水 份，以 免 脫 水 和 中 暑。

在 兩 小 時 的 活 動 中，我 們 一 行 二 十 人 共 種 植 了 近 一 百 五

十 棵 樹，各 人 都 累 透 了，但 感 到 很 滿 足。然 而，共 同 的 勞 動 協 作 把 我 們 凝 聚 起 來，在 野 餐 桌 上 分 享 午 餐 時，愛 聊 天 的

參 加 者 開 始 流 露 本 色，而 較 安 靜 的 成 員 亦 不 禁 以 眼 神 回 應，一 起 參 與 交 流。

下 午 我 們 在 Lake Wilcox Park 繼 續 一 系 列 的 活 動，還 有

一 個 輪 流 分 享 當 日 體 驗 的 團 體 時 間。

「可 以 請 你 們 每 人 都 分 享 一 項 今 天 的『初 體 驗』嗎 ?」 21

有 參 加 者 立 刻 說： 「這 是 我 好 一 段 長 時 間 以 來，初 次 再 認

識 新 朋 友。」

幾 位 成 員 點 頭 表 示 贊 同。儘 管「 扎 根 」是 當 天 活 動 的 主

題，但 與 人 連 結 一 直 是 我 們 期 待 的 事 情。聽 到 年 輕 人 續 一 的 回 應，提 醒 我 們 網 上 聯 繫 始 終 不 及 大 家 一 起 工 作 時，流

下 來 的 汗 水 與 發 出 的 歡 笑 讓 我 們 緊 緊 地 聯 繫 在 一 起，來 得 真 實。

「 這 是 我 初 次 搭 校 巴。」另 一 位 參 加 者 的 答 案 同 樣 引 起

共 鳴。大 家 顯 然 都 對 黃 色 校 巴 有 種 莫 名 的 喜 愛 – 象 徵 本 地

學 校 經 驗 的 校 巴，或 者 定 居 已 久 的 加 拿 大 人 都 會 習 以 為 常，但 新 來 加 的 朋 友 卻 對 之 充 滿 好 奇。

「 這 是 我 初 次 植 樹。」承 接 這 分 享，我 們 轉 往 第 二 道 問

題：

「一 到 十 分，你 覺 得 自 己 植 根 加 拿 大 有 多 深 ?」

這 問 題 的 設 計 旨 在 讓 人 反 思 對「根 基」的 看 法，啟 發 他 們

感 受 自 己 對 一 個 地 方 的「 植 根 」或「 連 結 」有 多 深。問 題 並 沒 有 標 準 答 案，但 思 考 和 分 享 這 個 問 題 卻 是 其 意 義 本 身。

良 久，有 人 回 答 七 分，有 人 回 答 五 點 五 分、八 分。一 些 成

員 在 講 解 自 己 的 分 數 和 背 後 故 事，其 中 說 五 點 五 分 那 位 青 年 決 定 將 自 己 的 選 擇 改 為 七 點 五 分。

「我 剛 記 起，我 正 在 學 校 幫 助 新 來 加 者 上 學。」 「你 來 這 裡 多 久 了 ?」 「九 個 月。」 其 他 年 輕 人 繼 續 談 論 植 根 加 國 的 感 受，我 則 沉 思 她 對 扎

根此地的自我肯定–以新來加者的身份歡迎其他新來的 人。

n 2015, Parks Canada, in partnership with multiple cities and towns in the Greater Toronto Area, connected the parks and green spaces around the Rouge River to establish the Rouge National Urban Park. Since then, Across U-hub has actively organized outdoor camping, hiking and tree planting activities in the park, exposing hundreds of young people to the wonder of Canada’s great outdoors. We do this not only to participate and contribute to the preservation of Toronto’s green spaces, but also to enable our community to record their efforts in preserving the present for generations to come.

One of our most popular activities is tree planting. Planting a tree teaches us how to protect the environment and cultivate a better quality of life. Young people are very keen to participate because it is a fun, outdoor activity where they can meet new people and form friendships with like-minded individuals. Seeing their tree planted, watered, and ready to grow also creates a deep sense of contribution to their local community.

In the words of Samson Wong : “Rootedness and friendship can sometimes develop without us realizing. And one day, we suddenly realize that we call someone a friend, or someplace home.”

Walnuts and pears you plant for your heirs. It takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred to raise people.

Tree planting also acts a strong metaphor for how Across U-hub serves the Chinese immigrant community. To grow and flourish, trees need to extend their roots deep into the soil. Like trees, Across U-hub creates platforms to enable young people to grow deep roots in their new environment. With these roots, they will have a strong foundation to build their futures.

植 樹 需 要 將 樹 苗 的 根，深 植 入 泥 土 當 中，讓 人 聯 想 到 移

民 的 處 境 ﹕ 深 入 到 新 的 人，新 的 事 物 當 中 去，建 立 根 基， 生 根 成 長，締 造 未 來。歷 年 來，年 輕 人 非 常 熱 衷 投 身 植 樹 26

活 動，透 過 集 體 植 樹，參 加 者 可 以 認 識，和 結 交 志 同 道 合 的 新 朋 友。
