A

cross the Lens: Stories of You and Me, Issue III, brings you inspiring stories, where the interviews were conducted and stories written by our youth. This edition documents a story of a father and his two sons. The father is an entrepreneur who establishes his own outdoor sports business with clients all over the world. Life experience, to him, is the key for a person’s growth.

Therefore, when raising his two sons, he let them explore, giving them the space and the flexibility to discover who they are through exploring different areas of life. To both the father and the sons, mutual communication is the way to build trust and relationship within the family. Despite the hardships and challenges that they are facing, as an immigrant family, they see each other as their own support and source of comfort. May these stories give you a sense of hope and the power of love to walk through your valley of darkness and into a pasture of grassland.

光 和 養 份 才 能 茁 壯 成 長。R o b e r t 以 自 己 養 育 兒 子

的 經 驗 告 訴 我 們，青 少 年 的 成 長 與 父 母 的 教 育 方 法 有 關： 適時的引導和無條件支持就是父母給予孩子的陽光和養 份。

Ro b e r t 在 香 港 出 生，1 6 歲 時 離 開 了 他 熟 悉 的 地 方，隻 身

來 到 加 拿 大 求 學，開 始 獨 立 生 活。他 擔 心 香 港 主 權 回 歸 後

的 改 變，因 此 完 成 學 業 之 後，他 選 擇 留 在 加 拿 大，是 家 族 中 第 一 個 移 民 加 拿 大 的 人。R o b e r t 在 陌 生 的 環 境 中 獨 自

打 拼，遇 到 了 許 多 困 難，他 憑 着 堅 持 不 懈 的 毅 力，幾 經 奮

鬥，成 功 創 立 了 户 外 運 動 車 品 牌 D e m o n Po w e r s p o r ts， 開 拓 了 自 己 的 事 業。

R o b e r t 的 生 意 遍 佈 全 球 各 地，經 常 需 要 到 不 同 地 方 視

察 工 作，和 開 發 新 巿 場。有 一 次 他 帶 一 名 員 工 到 外 地 視 察，這 位 員 工 告 訴 他，他 從 來 不 知 道 世 界 是 如 此 之 大，這 肯 定 了 他 的 信 念：經 歷 是 造 就 人 的 關 鍵。

年 輕 的 時 候，R o b e r t 獲 得 家 人 的 支 持，使 他 勇 於 走 上 創

談 到 父 母 應 該 如 何 與 子 女 相 處 時，他 的 秘 訣 就 是 與 子 女

保 持 一 種 既 親 密 又 疏 離 的 關 係！R o b e r t 進 一 步 解 釋 說， 作 為 家 長，我 們 難 免 因 為 愛 而 會 過 度 寵 愛 和 保 護 子 女，但

這 不 利 於 他 們 的 成 長；真 正 的 愛 是 在 他 們 有 需 要 的 時 候 做 他 們 的 後 盾；當 他 們 犯 錯 時，成 為 他 們 的 指 路 明 燈；在 他 們 有 自 己 想 法 時，給 他 們 足 夠 的 自 由。 5

親 切，我 相 信 這 也 是 他 與 家 人 有 良 好 和 深 入 溝 通 的 秘 訣 之 一。

採 訪 接 近 尾 聲，有 人 問 Ro b e r t 是 否 希 望 兒 子 繼 承 衣 缽，

他 笑 著 說:「兒子 們 長 大 後 會 有 自 己 的 想 法，如 果 他 們 不 願 意 繼 承，那 就 逐 漸 放 慢 公 司 的 發 展 吧！」

R o b e r t 再 一 次 以 行 動 証 明，真 正 對 孩 子 成 長 有 利 的 不

是 以 愛 綑 綁 着 他 們，而 是 為 他 們 插 上 翅 膀，給 他 們 有 發 展 和 發 揮 的 自 由，選 擇 屬 於 自 己 的 路，並 提 醒 他 們 不 要 忘 記 父 母 永 遠 是 他 們 的 後 盾。

新 冠 肺 炎 疫 情 來 勢 汹 汹，席 捲 全 球，改 變 了 許 多 常 規，不

少 人 感 到 壓 力 和 沮 喪。然 而，R o b e r t 非 常 樂 觀 地 應 對 新 冠 肺 炎 的 侵 襲。他 的 人 生 座 右 銘 是「 明 天 會 更 好 」 ，他 認 為 生 活 不 會 一 帆 風 順，有 挫 折 才 會 有 動 力。

THREE LESSONS THAT STRENGTHEN THE CHINESE IDENTITY AND VALUES IN OUR NEXT GENERATION INTERVIEWED BY Joel Lam & Tiffany Ore WRITTEN BY Joyce Fok

T

he reality is that COVID-19 has the power to destroy families. But that is not the entire reality. COVID-19 also has the power to strengthen families. The pandemic brought the older son (Kelvin) home after 9 years of working away from Toronto. It brought the younger son (Kenneth) home more frequently for meals with his parents and changed his vision towards his father’s business.

The brothers recognized that their career success was built upon the hard work and confidence modeled by their parents, who immigrated to Canada decades ago and who built up their own success from scratch. Over the years, they listened carefully to their parents’ stories of their family in Asia and their hardships in Canada and integrated these lessons of perseverance into their own lives.

Lesson #1: “Adversity won’t destroy you as a person.”

Both brothers learned this lesson when attending a mostly white Anglo-Saxon school. They faced the reality that they were different from most of their classmates. They also faced the reality that people would make fun of them for something as insignificant as having small eyes. These experiences did not destroy them, just as they did not destroy their parents when they faced discrimination when they first moved to Canada.

The brothers saw the confidence of their parents and developed that same spirit towards the hardships that life threw at them.

These experiences provided them the space to grow as leaders and, more importantly, it gave them the opportunity to grow in community with the support of family. Their parents taught Kelvin and Kenneth that they did not need to fight back.

They could become better people by moving forward from these adversities and waiting until the time is right to confront their classmates. They taught them the power of resilience.

Lesson #2: “Explore and grow – but know that your family is always here.”

Their parents taught that business and family were separate. Family always comes first. Going into the family business was never pushed upon the brothers. Their parents gave them the space and the flexibility to discover who they were through exploring different areas of life, such as music, sports, and volunteering in third world countries. When Kenneth found out that he did not like music, violin or piano, he had the opportunity to explore less traditional hobbies. He got into fixing things around the house and sports, which he ended up loving and pursuing.

Their parents encouraged them to grow in their creativity and thinking. Rather than focusing purely on academics and extracurricular lessons, their father would ask them for their opinions about things. Through regular guidance, the brothers gained confidence in their thinking and appreciated their father’s interest in their opinions.

Lesson #3: “Trust is built up over a lifetime.”

When they were growing up, their mom would tell them stories about their family and their 10

grandparents in Hong Kong and China. These served as daily reminders about where they came from – their family roots. The teaching of these values was sometimes viewed as nagging, especially if it came directly from the parents. Their parents, however, made sure that these values were passed down through their friends sharing their experiences with the brothers. When they were younger, these values were passed down from the older to the younger brother, but now, these values and guidance are shared in more of an equal relationship.

With these daily reminders of who they are and their cultural history, the stage was set for their father to pass on his vision for his business in a sharing time during a family trip. Their father shared his struggles and experiences that got him to where he was with the brothers. Although the brothers’ initial reactions to this sharing time were, “Why are we doing this?”, skepticism and confusion gave way to clarity when they understood more of their father’s sacrifice for his children. He gave up everything to set up a better life for his next generation.

Through this sharing and other conversations during the pandemic, the family encouraged Kenneth to pursue a career path that suits his personality and interests. Kenneth realized that continuing with his comfortable corporate job meant that he was not doing all that he could do for his future children. Like his parents had sacrificed for him, he wanted to set the stage for his children as well. During the pandemic, Kenneth took the step towards this vision for his future.

He quit his corporate job and joined his father in business with hopes to expand his father’s business.

The pandemic was an opportunity to bring together the two generations of this family – physical closeness in the present and alignment of vision for the future. In our Chinese communityoriented culture, our support comes from within the family, from our parents and siblings. This support is what gives us the strength to face adversity and the courage to stand up and be who we are.

Joyce Fok This writing experience brought me a dash of humility regarding my own skills as a writer, but it also gave me a chance to explore writing creatively to express a message, in this case, the message of perseverance in the face of adversity across generations.

A DEFENDER ON THE BATTLEFIELD OF LIFE INTERVIEWED & WRITTEN BY Evita Lai & Rocky Luo TRANSLATED BY Celeste Cheung

“C

amera’s ready.” “Microphone’s ready.”

Sitting in front of the camera, and upon the signal from the crew, Billy starts speaking about his story.

The story starts seven years ago, when Billy was in the insurance sales field. When he entered the field he didn’t expect this job would change his perspective. For Billy, he found that it was “a job that you could only do well without a conscience,” and felt that he would lose himself if he continued.

Billy didn’t want this type of work and wanted a job where he can support his family and help others.

Therefore, he decided to return to school for a master’s degree in social work.

Upon graduation, Billy and his wife decided, after careful consideration, to immigrate to Toronto and start a new life, along with their young son.

However, because he didn’t have any Canadian work experience and his professional qualifications weren’t completely in line with requirements 13

needed to work as a social worker in Canada, Billy wasn’t able to find work. During this time of confusion, a nightmare occurred as his wife suddenly passed away, leaving behind him and his two year-old son.

The days became increasingly difficult, but Billy did not retreat from his passion for social work.

After a lot of hard work, he finally found a job at a Chinese nursing home. Billy was responsible for their social activities, and seeing the elderly clients happy every day brought him a lot of satisfaction.

Billy said, “Out of all the different social groups, my favourite is in serving the elderly. A lot of them take the nursing home as the last step in their life and their last family. They need people to take care of them and they appreciate and value company.”

Billy’s passion was admired by the residents and his colleagues. In just a few years time he was promoted to management, but at the same time that role lessened the amount of interaction he had with the residents. “I had to take the promotion as I 14

have to support my family. My son is just six years old and it’s getting expensive.” Billy lowered his voice and added, “Sometimes when I miss them, I would sneak out to see them.”

In this pandemic, nursing homes became hot spots and were the epicentre of concern.

Everyone was in a panic where Billy was working; clearly, they were anxious of the arrival of bad news. He understood that unity is critical in these present times, and in order to prevent rumours from undermining their morale, he encouraged his subordinates to express their concerns and doubts. He promised not to conceal the facts from them, and tried his best to find out the truth and eliminate doubts.

The emotions of the colleagues slowly stabilized, and everyone gradually realized that the pandemic wasn’t a problem that can be instantly solved. It was necessary to unite and calmly fight against it.

Billy saw that the caregivers were the only support for the elderly residents. It was a challenge to strike a balance between the feelings and needs of the residents and ensuring the safety of the caregivers by maintaining social distance. Billy told himself that they would try their best, within his ability and scope.

He therefore, contacted the volunteers in the nursing home to create online activities such as tai chi and opera singing. He also organized his colleagues to go out to buy fruit and snacks, 15

which were then delivered to the residents after strict disinfection measures. During the quarantine period, the highlights for the elderly were to learn how to operate online applications, place orders and eat snacks.

Billy recalled that the most emotional moment during the pandemic was seeing a resident not being able to fulfill their wish of seeing their family one last time. At the beginning of the pandemic, all visits were banned at the nursing homes. Later, the measures were slightly lifted, but only one family member was allowed to visit at a time. The family members of the residents had cried outside the glass door and begged Billy to make an exception.

Although they understood Billy’s point of view, he felt sad and uncomfortable every time he had to play this role.

It wasn’t easy for Billy even after getting off work. His son had just entered grade one but the

school had to close. Because he was a frontline worker and had to go to work, he was anxious that he would contract the virus and spread it to his son. As a single parent father, Billy kept looking everywhere for daycare. Although the government provided various subsidies, the additional costs, as well as the quarantine and prevention procedures added to his burden.

Billy lamented, “Work for the nursing home cannot be carried out online. In the face of work and family, the pressure is increasing every day, and the support received from the government is just really limited.” With a huge burden on his shoulders, Billy’s way to relieve stress was to use any available free time he has, either after his son had fallen asleep or in between getting off from work and picking up his son, to watch online videos, or to play basketball at the nearby courts.

With so many difficulties, what is it that kept Billy going? He mentioned three things.

First, he had a group of cooperative and hardworking colleagues who stood by their posts and were willing to take an extra step by doing overtime without hesitation when they were facing staff shortage issues.

Second, it was the deep connection he had with the residents. “When the residents smile, I smile; when they cry, I cry.” It was this kind of bonding that had led Billy to pour out his heart to 17

accompany them during these difficult times.

Lastly, having faced so much adversity in the past few years, he had cultivated persistence and a “do our best” mentality.

In times of adversity, some will be discouraged and some will complain. Billy reminds us that there is no easy road to life and that only those who are afraid but still tightly hold on and are optimistic would be able to survive through tough times.

During this interview, Billy didn’t speak of any lessons, but from him we have learned the most important lessons.

HAILEY CHEUNG VOLUNTEER SHARING

U

nder the pandemic of COVID-19, most of us are depressed, scared, and frightened about whether we will be the next or whether we will spread the virus to our family members if we were found to be COVID-positive. We have the feeling of powerlessness as we think that we cannot control anything; however, every cloud has a silver lining.

Actually, we can still exert our power to get control of the life we want and our decision may change someone else’s life if we are willing to take action and step forward to help those who are in need.

Our caring and love will act like the sunshine, shining intensely on everyone’s heart, during this challenging moment.

Undeniably, COVID-19 takes away lots of people’s lives, leading to sorrow and tragedy, yet, it is also a trial from God, testing how kind a person can be under tough circumstances. Larry is a person who offered charcoal in the snowy weather. I believe that everyone he helped could definitely feel the warmth from him, which provided 19

more energy for them to continually fight against COVID-19.

By looking around the world, discrimination, vituperation, and selfishness have appeared since COVID-19. If every one of us were kind, inclusive, and generous to others, even though COVID-19 still exists, people’s lives would be different and would have a greater sense of well-being. One question raised here for everyone to reflect on is, “Have you tried to think about or make an effort to contribute to the world to help others in light of the current dark moments?”

JOYCE FOK VOLUNTEER SHARING

I

’ve always been told that I’m a good writer and people usually ask me to edit their work – but I’ve never actually written an article with a message before. A few weeks ago, when Tiffany at Across presented to me the idea of writing an article about the Ng brothers for the e-stories, I thought, “Sure, why not?” Little did I know how hard it is to convey a story that’s not my own in words that reflect the featured person’s spirit and perspective towards life, and that can be understood by the average person.

This writing experience brought me a dash of humility regarding my own skills as a writer, but it also gave me a chance to explore writing creatively to express a message, in this case, the message of perseverance in the face of adversity across generations. Although the message itself remains the same, the story could have been expressed in many ways and each way would have conveyed a slightly different meaning. Choosing the voice that best fit the Ng brothers was a challenge – but it was also an important technique to learn for my own writing – and it was intriguing trying to understand and convey the true spirit of the Ng brothers.

NATALIE ORE VOLUNTEER SHARING

T

he story about Joanna, Zara, and Steven joining the 2020 online marathon allowed me to better put myself into others’ shoes. I have understood that each one of us faces different difficulties during the pandemic as we all play different roles in our lives. For example, I fully resonated with Zara and Steven as we play the same role as students. As students, we learn to become more proactive and independent as learners due to the challenges we meet from the mode of online learning. Meanwhile, I also appreciated how Joanna would support her mentees while dealing with the obstacles she came across.

Last but not least, I would like to say that I am very thankful for the opportunity to write an article for Across. I not only learnt a lot from the people I have written about but also reflected on the ways I managed the challenges during the process of writing. In a nutshell, we may not know when the pandemic will end or when the world will return to the “old normal”. Let us all use the time now to equip and improve ourselves for the new era after the pandemic.

KATHRYN WANG VOLUNTEER SHARING

O

ver the past two interviews, I believe I was able to learn quite a bit about many things.

First, I believe that, through these interviews, I was able to improve my skills in improvising and coming up with solutions on the spot. This was the case because, in both interviews, I realized that just because we were prepared with questions does not mean that the interview will always go the way we planned. For example, a lot of the time, the interviewees answered many of our questions before we even asked. So, it was important for us to come up with follow up questions on the spot and decide on the priority of which question to ask. At first, it was quite challenging, however, as we went on with the interview, I was able to adapt and improvise. Through the article, I was able to really reflect on the interview and realized that I was able to learn a lot about these businesses and also about myself. I was able to reflect on my own relationship with being Chinese and how I was able to relate to many of their thoughts. Thoughts such as the individualistic vs collectivistic view made me appreciate businesses that follow similar 23

mottos as Larry’s. I do not know if there was much change within myself but I did learn to appreciate businesses more and learned to empathize with their struggles. In addition, I am not quite sure how I would apply what I learned to my daily life; however, I am sure that through these interviews I am more able to appreciate everything and, even in school, learn to help others out more and to think more about others.

ome relationships are “thin relationships” - you share the same bus ride with them and never cross paths again. “Thick relationships” are the ones that have layers. Once you were complete strangers but life has brought you together to share special moments, be it intimate or heartbreaking, and then you have this unforgettable deep connection thereafter.

COVID-19 may be one of those moments that makes space for “thick relationships”. Across the Lens: Stories of You and Me tells us some of these invisible “thick relationships” in our immigrant community. In this issue, we feature stories of an immigrant family, diving into the respect, honesty and trust shared between father-son relationship, brotherhood and friendship. Their lives are no fairy tale or happy ever after, but the genuinely human connection that they have is many families’ dreams.
