Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. After promotion last year, our 1st XV play in the Regional 1 South East league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Five of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South-West Division, and play in the Counties 2 Tribute Bucks, Berks and Oxon South competition. Like the 1st XV, they were promoted last year. The Third XV play in an informal competition for Bucks third teams, usually under lights on a Friday evening. They provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs, we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson, or get in touch through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome. As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under

18. Last year we won the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday, when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Ryan Westmacott (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along. If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. Centenary Fund For the next100 years

he centenary of our great club will be marked by many events at the club during the season 2024-25. We are an ambitious, friendly and successful community club providing an exceptional and inclusive rugby and social experience to all our members of all ages and backgrounds. We are entirely dependent on the support of our members and many generous sponsors. The annual cost of running a big sports club is considerable and we always need to spend large sums on clubhouse and ground maintenance.

The Centenary Fund has the target of raising £200,000 and we hope that members past and present will support this project - it will make so much difference to our club and benefit all our members. A&C FIRST EVER WOMEN’S MATCH Match Report - Sunday 16th February 2025 Amersham and Chiltern Women RFC - 10 – Bicester Vixens RFC – 32

A bumper crowd supported both sides alongside some very proud coaching staff that all contributed to a red later day all round. I had never watched a live ladies match ever before and I couldn’t help but notice that they ran out onto the pitch faster and with higher knees

than their male counterparts. Months of training to be ready and able for a true clash of Titans. Wily and more experienced Vixens V the upcoming Women of Chiltern. For the purposes of this match report, I’m going to call A&C Women the Chiltern Muntjacs. So pitch in good condition, large crowd and freezing cold. The Bucks Ref had warmed up well

and was nice a vocal throughout with a whistle that was working well.

And so to the action……….. Only 3 mins gone – Muntjac M. Lear screamed down the wing, fast! Fast! Fast!, road-runner style covering at least half of the pitch for the opener. Missed conversion from Ms Lear (5-0). 6mins – Vixen (No8) pocket dynamo, fast, dynamic and hugely effective. Head down, powerful hand-offs and a dive over the line. Missed conversion (no10) (5-5).

Experience told with the Vixens just having too much skill and oomph. Our Muntjacs are full of potential and with a wee bit of support some friends at Aylesbury made it a great spectacle. We are looking forward to the next outing when the passes will zip, the tackles will crunch and everyone’s faces will smile. Great day and thank you all!

Lear on the Chiltern line – bundled Vixen No6 into touch with a grunt and sheer power. Back on 9/11/24 A&C secured their first league win of the season with a narrow 11-7 win over Shelford at Weedon Lane. Since then, Shelford have madewishes it to a secureAmersham 5th place & Chiltern RFC whilst we have felt the full level 5 challenge every success for the new season down the bottom.

Just as luck had it Shelford welcomed the local farmers for a pre-match luncheon. Owing to over 200 descending for their local feast any

scarecrows had to stay in the fields. Fair to say there was quite an atmosphere, friendly but clearly some nerves following Shelford’s previous week loss against bottom side Bedford Athletic. The visitors warmed up well, ready for the challenges a large and loyal support provides. And so to the action….. We started with purpose with some fine kicking from hand by Centre Aaron Lewis and secure lineouts from 2nd rows Jacques O’Driscoll and Harry Bradshaw. It wasn’t long until the early A&C pressure began to tell and when the backs were unleashed Shelford struggled to contain. Jordan Scott benefitted from the opening lineout maul going over for a well-deserved opening try with Aaron then converting well from out near the touchline. (0-7). With some welcome cheers from a decent

Of concern was then a further penalty conceded duly slotted for what looked like a H/T lead for the home side. Perhaps fate – when Chiltern after some further pressure within the Shelford 22 in fact took the opportunity to seize a half-time lead (16-17)

With the temperature beginning to rise on a pretty dull and cold day it was Max Morphey (prop) who again dominated our rampaging play with an aggressive run, barging the defence back to score an impressive 2nd Chiltern try. Once again soundly converted and it was clear we meant business (3-14). It was important that Shelford kept the scoreboard ticking over and therefore too the opportunity to kick another successful penalty (6-14). Approaching half time and after some decent pressure a fine move through the centre and the opening Shelford try was scored to make

I was performing well running the line with a knee still in recovery but holding up. I was also entertained by Chair of Trustees, Dave Crimp providing expert analysis. Always hopeful and never expectant. He did have a glint in his eye. I stayed on the far side in the peace and quiet far away from the home stand. Who would score next? It was Shelford – again taking the opportunity to kick a penalty and regain the lead. That was in fact to be their last score of the day.

MATCH REPORT There were some hard hits going in from both sides – all fair. 9 mins into the 2nd half and after some Shelford pressure Doug McGregor-Smith (prop) was adjudged to have tackled high and dangerously and was red carded. With 14 men it all could have become a bit of a struggle and a great game potentially subdued if Shelford had pulled away. Nothing was further from A&C’s minds and as Shelford pressed more it was in fact Chiltern who took 2 penalty opportunities to win a hard fought, entertaining a good-natured match. Of

special mention again is that of Joel Kingsley who secured a shocking pass from his big brother after a wee juggle before almost going over in the corner. Quite an impact. Still much to do with our remaining matches next week it’s Hertford at home. They are currently 5th and will travel to Weedon Lane expecting to win and do the double over us. 40-15 winners back in October 24 we will be determined to win the return leg as we continue to try and move out of the relegation zone. Forget Twickenham – Scotland are good and hopefully see you next week for what should be another Chiltern cracker!!!!!

Hertford, by contrast, go into the game placed fifth, serenely mid-table. They have had a strong season and won comfortably last week against Tring. It will be a difficult challenge for the home side, though they do feel that they were in with a chance in the away game before the referee took offence at some of their language. We extend a warm welcome to Hertford’s players, officials and supporters. The men in claret and white (or, this year, white and claret) have had three matches since my last missive, and they have performed manfully, if with limited tangible reward. We all know that Oundle are going to win the league, and they duly despatched us when they came here on 1 February. However, we gave a much better account of ourselves than we had in the away fixture, tackling throughout and scoring a couple of tries (Dan Kingsley and Jordan Scott). It was much the same when we went to second placed Letchworth Garden City the week after: some resolute defence, with Noah Jarvis defiantly snatching the last try of the game, but no league points to show for it. Last Saturday away at Shelford was, however, a different story. Chiltern had won the Ash Grove game, but Shelford are strong at home and were in fifth place going into the match. Two early tries, one, inevitably, from wishes Amersham & put Chiltern RFC Jordan Scott and the other from the rampaging Max Morphey us ahead before Shelford clawed their way back into the game toevery lead 19-17success just after halftime. Reduced to fourteen players, for the new season Chiltern stuck to their processes (as Mike Smith would say) and refused to allow the home team to extend their lead in any way. The second of two penalty goals from Aaron Lewis saw the score board move to 19-23 as the referee blew for full time: cueHigh generalWycombe rejoicing and a more than happy bus trip back.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT ALEXANDER BOWER (BACK)

I get a message from Alex to say that he his in training and that he has chosen to walk for 40 days in the wilderness to reflect, energise and find his inner wellbeing. The text was abbreviated but I got the gist. Within seconds I was then sent the map coordinates. I can’t disclose his whereabouts or indeed the job he is training to do. Don’t ask either as otherwise he’ll have to do something to you. You know the line. All I will say though is that he needed a bath, was somewhat damp and a tad shivery somewhere taking shelter in the Chiltern Hills. He’s glad of the rest and he takes a sip from my hip flask and enjoys a black coffee from my thermos cup. A mere 22yrs of age Alex was literally made in Beaconsfield. He progressed through the Under 6s beyond fun assault courses and through some rough and tough tag rugby to become a jinky and fast back. I was a coach there too (don’t tell anyone) and knew that he always preferred the ‘Chiltern red’ to the more budgie coloured green and yellow. Mid-teens he chose to make the switch and has loved being a Chiltern Cherub ever since. I therefore feel comfortable probing him further just as some drizzle begins to fall. He is a High

Wycombe (yes another) baby and has always had loyalty to Wasps. He adores the colour burgundy hence his very deep loving of the Chiltern red. He wishes more than anything that A&C will stay in our current league – ‘Andy it wouldn’t be fair to drop down especially as I’ve sacrificed my ribs to the cause’. I move the subject on to in 10 years’ time and he pauses open eyed – ‘ never too much too young Andy but married with a kid when I could be having fun’ – Ha ha Alex The Specials sang that in 1979. He knows I like some song lyrics. Alex goes onto explain how he finds himself initially scrunching up the toilet paper before he gets some folds in. ‘better grip Andy’. He likes Foster’s Lager and has no idea why. I explain that even the Australians hate it. He seeks out the flame grilled ridge crisps after loving his trip to the Indonesian island of Bali. The A&C budgie smugglers were especially popular and he struggled to find any Fosters – bless! He drives a Ferrari red Polo and if he was gifted £20k tomorrow he would treat all his family to a ski holiday in Val d’Isere with a case of Champagne. He has kept his staring blue eyes through the years and although unable to wiggle his ears he is able to flare his nostrils. This was coupled with an animal noise which to be honest I couldn’t identify. This made Alex sad. He loves Tigers and adores the way they ‘chuff’ – ‘not a roar Andy they are chuffers’. When walking in the wilderness he has

been humming ‘Dicked down in Dallas’ by Trey Lewis. Not one I know but certainly touches Alex’s button. Always good for a tour bus ,Alex is a Les Mis fan with ‘Barricade ‘being the song of choice for a solo turn. The drizzle has got worse, and Alex has a couple of days to finish his reflection time. Although damp and scratching his bottom after sitting he’s feeling

great and full of energy. Alex thank you for your hard work on the rugby pitch this season and finish the walk safely. Watch out also as there are Muntjac deer about –

he rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse events and sponsors means we just about break even.

This season we celebrate 100 years of our active presence in the local community. The senior club was founded in 1924 and just as importantly we were one of the pioneer clubs who started mini rugby 50 years ago. We continue to provide a wonderful rugby experience for players and supporters of all ages.

Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we in his A&C attire, chatting on have done various fundraising schemes to improve every aspect match day of the club. The clubhouse itself was the biggest and others have followed such as the solar panels, the new car park and of course the borehole. All of these investments make it possible to start the season. Incidentally with our energy costs increasing dramatically we need to focus on ways to become more energy efficient. Pitch maintenance is another big expense, with an extra £20,000 spent this summer on more ground’s maintenance work and nearly £30,000 on clubhouse repairs. We continually invest and the Centenary fundraising offers a great opportunity to make more progress. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days. Of course, our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days. So, without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages and their coaches too. We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them.
