Chairman’s Welcome Amersham & Chiltern Rugby Club has been built over generations by people who care deeply about rugby, community and one another, and it is an enormous privilege to write this first note as your new Chairman. Thank you for the trust you have shown in appointing me to look after our club during my time in this role; it is a responsibility that will never be taken lightly. And I would like to welcome North Walsham as our first guests under my tenure as Chairman. Thanks to Huw Thomas Before looking forward, it is important to look back and recognise the outstanding contribution of our outgoing Chairman, Huw Thomas. Huw has given five years of energy, time and steady leadership to Amersham & Chiltern, helping to steer the club through challenge and change while keeping rugby, fun and friendship at its heart. On behalf of the whole membership, a sincere thank you to Huw for everything he has done and will, no doubt, continue to do around the club. Why this club matters This club is special because it brings together players, parents, coaches, volunteers and supporters from across Amersham, the Chilterns and beyond, and gives them a place to belong. From minis taking their first steps with a rugby ball through to our senior sides, women’s team and Colts, the touchline friendships, shared stories and lifelong memories created here are what make A&C so important personally. Having seen the difference this environment makes to young people and adults alike, there is a deep determination to protect what is best about our club while helping it to grow.

Exciting times ahead There is a huge amount to look forward to in the remainder of this season across every section of the club – minis, juniors, colts, women and senior men – as our teams continue to compete, develop and enjoy their rugby. On any given weekend the pitches are full, the car park is heaving and the clubhouse is buzzing, and that is exactly how it should be for a thriving community rugby club in its second century of existence. Alongside the rugby, plans are being developed to improve and modernise our facilities so that A&C offers an even stronger social and active hub for members and the wider community. Enhancing the clubhouse, maximising use of our grounds and investing carefully in the player and spectator experience will all help ensure that Amersham & Chiltern remains a welcoming venue for rugby, events and celebrations for many years to come. Thank you to our people Everything that happens here – every training night, every Sunday morning and every matchday – relies on the commitment of our players, coaches, volunteers and support staff. With Christmas time fast approaching, we welcomed the youth of Old Northampton to Ash Grove for this return fixture following our narrow 17-19 win, way back in September. There were, however, undoubted signs that both A&C and ONs were on the rise, from their 10th and 11th places, respectively. I know that there had been concerns from ONs that, following some of their previous star players being persuaded to play elsewhere, the remaining youthful inexperience would perhaps struggle in the league for the 2025/2026 season. Last season, ONs finished a deserved 4th and would in fact have finished in the top 3 if A&C hadn’t beaten Sudbury at home on the last day of last season.

With this in mind, we were never going to take this fixture lightly, and with the 2 youngest squads, the expectation was rightly that a proper ‘ding dong’ would result. We were not to be disappointed. From the start, both teams went at each other hammer and tongs, with little between them. ONs took an early lead with A&C never far away. Both sides, though, were disappointing in defence, effectively undermining some terrific attacks. All credit to both sets of players for what was a closely fought and entertaining match. Ending 10 pts clear, Old Northamptonians deserved their win with both teams welcoming potent attacking play alongside some weak

MATCH REPORT defending. A reminder, undoubtedly, that the style of play is a bonus when it’s the points and victory that matter. ONs and A&C are now on the same number of points, with A&C ahead in points difference. Cheers of initial joy became cheers of relief for Tring as Chiiltern so nearly timed their gallant victo-ry to perfection. This was a 4th V 11th in a league where the bottom half are all within a few points of each other. A couple of wins and you could be mid-table. Great selection of Christmas jumpers on show with the aroma of turkey and cranberry filling the Hertfordshire air. Notable travelling support and a strong squad despite some injuries. Max Morphey made a welcome return to the front row, and Sam Gilbert was recently welcomed from Chinnor in our 2nd row. Robert Hughes also made a welcome return to the 1s in the back row and, by far, had the most impressive moustache. Louie Mould also took up

Nathan Cleaver-Brown was also welcomed to the bench on his very first selection for the 1s. He got on with 5 mins to go, and he was my favourite to score the winning try. How wrong I was. And so to the action……. Tring started as strongly as they always do at home. Pacey and re-lentless in attack, and using the slope into the corner so well when it came to their place kicking. A tough start for A&C and reflected in the early scoring. Trings opening try on 4mins with another

MATCH REPORT following quickly on 8mins - converted (12-0). It wasn’t until the 17th minute that the mighty prop Max Morphey was poked and came to life with one of his marauding Viking-style rampages. Tough to stop and over he went with a neat conversion following from centre, Harry Stevens (12-7). With a touch of luck and extreme good fortune, Tring went at it again, benefitting from a care-less charge down on 22mins - converted (19-7). With Tring suspecting matters could be tight, they took the opportunity of a penalty on 28 mins (22 - 7). Then, on 35 mins, the subtle shape-shifter that is Michael McKenzie-Crook floated down the wing scoring in the corner (22-17). With a few Santa hats dotted around and a sizeable Chiltern support, the alcohol was flowing as the huge Heul drinks bottle shuddered by the changing room doors. The scene was undoubtedly set for a cracking 2nd half - Tring were shaken, and with a couple of their players identified as being a little naughty, Chiltern benefited from the issuing of 2 X yellow cards. Sadly, centre Sammy Sin-clair also got caught up in the mini card frenzy, taking one for the team to even matters out a little.

Tring did well to push him out that far as the conversion was going to be tough (37-36). The con-version fell 2 inches short. Humbug!

Tring again opened the scoring on 45 minutes with a try (27-17), followed 2 minutes later by an-other penalty (30-17). With a few ‘Yo ho ho’s’ from players and supporters, Tring then delivered their final try on 60 mins and this time managed the conversion to make 37pts (37-17) with a 20 point lead and 20 mins to go. Tring may have been thinking of their stockings on Christmas morn-ing, but A&C had a fight back on their

It was a memorable game, and for those who travelled, they were blessed by having witnessed it. Sadly, both games this season have resulted in two one-point defeats at the hands of Tring. Next Game - Ash Grove (thank Goodness) V North Walsham on Saturday 10th January 2025, 2 pm ko. At the beginning of October, we travelled into deepest Norfolk, which took a bit of a beating. Traditionally very strong at their home ground, we are hoping again for some ‘Away fever’ to click in. The weather is going to be gorgeous, I hear, so we will see you there.

As usual the game was played in the traditional festive spirit with a 10 – 5 lead at half time to the Wanderers. A strong second half performance saw the Wanderers take the win 35-12. Thanks must go to Alan Baker & Stef Treloar for once again assembling a very competitive team. This event is critical to keep the students linked to club with an eye to playing future senior rugby.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT SAMUEL SINCLAIR

For the New Year, I thought I would give some focus to one of our younger players. A really charming young man who has an uncanny resemblance to the impressive Blair Kinghorn. Yes Blair! Our very own Scottish Braveheart, who currently ensures our historic ‘auld alliance’ with France (plays for Toulouse) is current and meaningful. I say uncanny as, alongside his looks, he also has the same turn of speed and impressive high-knee action when running. Similar, in fact, to that of a highly trained dressage horse. Again, a nod to the French and a delight to watch on the rugby field. With such an introduction, there is no surprise when I introduce Samuel (Sammy) Sinclair and provide some deserved focus to a home-made player in his inaugural 1st Team season with A&C. Established as a regular at 20 years old, he has come through the age ranks to be a hard-running, tacking and exciting back. With appearances at Centre (his favourite and on the outside), Full-back and Wing and

seeming eternally free of injury, he has embraced the undoubted challenges of being a level 5 rugby player. I therefore ask Sammy where he would like to meet. We meet within the club gym - he has brought some sushi and freshly squeezed ginger and lemon juice, and the background music is smooth classical. I’ve never been so relaxed in that wee gym. Only the day before, Sammy celebrated his 21st birthday. I note no smell of alcohol and a strong sense of clean living. He explains that his second home is very much the gym at the rugby club - ‘I like to come here, Andy and meditate prior to undertaking my exercise protocol’. He is a man of routine, and I know he is a regular at the gym, as I have seen his VW Polo parked alone in the corner on many occasions. He has an air of sheer commitment. If given just one wish from his fairy godmother, it would be to win the lottery. Switching to a more sombre subject, he also explains that if he were to be executed, he would request steak, chips and gravy as his last meal. Personally, I think it’s a waste of protein. Snack-wise, he is a bit more downmarket, relishing a plain Greggs sausage roll. He is a renowned reinsurance broker at Guy Carpenter and, as a recent arrival, is still enjoying learning the trade craft. Looking 10 years on, when he’s a real man, he pauses with a little hesitation and even concern. ‘It’s a long way away, Andy, and to be honest, I thought I would be this young forever. ’ This reality has clearly shaken him, but all credit to him as he considers the question and when he was over 30 years of age, he hopes to still be playing rugby, still enjoying his job, looking back on a wonderful decade lived. Wonderful positivity. Sammy’s love for the club is intense,

as he explains that he adores the paintings in the gym, especially in the 1st team changing room. He loves travelling on the Met line as he is surrounded by Burgundy and white. He loves the club’s chips and has been born and bred on hot dogs on a Sunday morning. We pause with these memories, slightly overwhelmed by emotion. Sammy is a thinker, though, and very eloquently explains that A&C has the strongest community feel - ‘ it’s like his second home really’. Even since the demise of Wasps RFC, like many of us, Sammy has remained a loyal fan with a picture of our own Alan Simmons in pride of place on his bedroom wall. He can’t wait to travel all the way to Kent to watch them again. His second team is Richmond, as they remind him of the sausages in a hot dog. Holiday-wise, it was New York! New York! As part of a family trip in 2019, which he loved the most. It was cool, and the food was great. He’s also a bit of a singer and explained, sweetly, that he enjoyed singing aloud ‘Fairytale of New York’ as they walked down 5th Avenue.

‘Hate’ is a word he never uses and never feels - awe! He adores his family, and they make him smile. If they’re good, then so is he. We finish the sushi and sip a little more ginger and lemon. He does, though, explain that he does not like losing. Can’t argue with that. We both agree that winning is good. Sammy does enjoy relaxing with a Modelo lager, chilled, no ice cubes. When thirsty, he craves the juice of an apple. De-pipped of course. Getting personal, and surprisingly, his belly button is an outy. I thought everyone had an inny. Like me, his favourite colour is blue. He loves the pastel shades especially. He’s confident of a home win against North Walsham as we pack up our packaging and dispose of our waste properly. Sammy, though, still has to undertake his training session, so I leave him to the sounds of Wagner and the groans of his sit-ups. An inspirational hour with a young player who will go far. Absolutely delighted he is a Chilt and already a terrific role model. Sammy we salute you!

SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS Why do we need Sponsors and Advertisers?

he rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse events and sponsors means we just about break even.

Last season we celebrated 100 years of our active presence in the local community. The senior club was founded in 1924 and just as importantly we were one of the pioneer clubs who started mini rugby 51 years ago. We continue to provide a wonderful rugby experience for players and supporters of all ages.

Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we in his A&C attire, chatting on have done various fundraising schemes to improve every aspect match day of the club. The clubhouse itself was the biggest and others have followed such as the solar panels, the new car park and of course the borehole. All of these investments make it possible to start the season. Incidentally with our energy costs increasing dramatically we need to focus on ways to become more energy efficient. We continually invest and the Centenary fundraising offers a great opportunity to make more progress. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days. Of course, our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days. So, without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages and their coaches too. We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them.
