Chairman’s Welcome

Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors.

For a second year, our 1st XV play in the Regional 1 South East league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Five of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here.

Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South-West Division, and play in the Counties 2 Tribute Bucks, Berks and Oxon East competition. They are usually, but not always at home when the Firsts are away.

The Third XV play in an informal competition for Bucks third teams, usually under lights on a Friday evening. They provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training.

Like most clubs, we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson, or get in touch through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.

As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. Last year we won the County Cup at U14 and U15 and narrowly lost in the final of the U16 competition. The club is

absolutely buzzing on a Sunday, when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact James Stacpoole (Minis) or Rob Elms (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along.

Last year we started up a Women’s team, which has gone from strength to strength. They are keen to recruit new and experienced players and will give both the warmest of welcomes. If you or anyone you know want to get involved, contact Vicky Edington or Gareth Bourne.

If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service.

Along with the rugby, we have a full calendar of social events, details of which can be seen elsewhere in this programme, on the website, or on the posters in the clubhouse. Whatever your level of interest in rugby, it’s a great club to be a member of, and we’d love to have you join us.

President: Peter Kenyon; Chairman: Huw Thomas; Deputy Chairman: Andy Saunders; Hon Sec: Ralph Hayward; Hon Treasurer: Chris Tavender; Membership Secretary: Sandra Hitchman; Director of Rugby: Pete Gibson; Mini Chairman: James Stacpoole; Junior Chairman: Rob Elms

REGIONAL 1 SOUTH EAST LEAGUE

AMERSHAM & CHILTERN 1XV

2025 / 2026 SEASON

MATCH REPORT

Saturday 6th September 2025 - 3pm Weedon Lane - Amersham

Amersham and Chiltern 1 XV - 24 v Southend Saxons- 29

(HT 10-15)

SAXONS RESOLUTE AND CHILTERNS LET SLIP

DON’T COUNT YOUR CHICKENS BEFORE THEY HATCH

AMERICAN R&B BAND - HONEY CONE - 2002

‘Don’t count your chickens before they hatch No, no, no you better treat me like a lady You Ian’t got my lovin’ yet Don’t count your chickens before they hatch No, no. no you better treat me with respect Or my love you’ll never get’

As you all know from recent experiences the Southend Saxons remain very much our bogey side. With a mixture of narrow losses amongst keenly fought conquests, they travelled to our Amersham home and like their Saxon heritage, full of defiance in respect of defeat and a confidence that once again they would be victorious.

The 1st game of the league season is always an exciting and expectant time for all teams involved. At the end of last season A&C had had an amazing run in ensuring safety by 8pts from the drop (10th) and closing in on our visitors Southend in 9th. With Sudbury (3rd) on the end of a 54-24 defeat by A&C there was every reason to hope this time the Saxons would be sunk.

In the buildup we all enjoyed our Colts take on their counterparts from North Walsham as a

warm up to the main event. Quite a ding-dong and an impressive standard as the boys fought out an exciting match. North Walsham won narrowly and at the death in a high scoring game. Quite a spectacle and thank you to both teams for quite a show.

Our wee U13s, coaches and their parents also had their celebration around receiving their A&C ties to accompany their very smart chinos. Lunch was enjoyed by all with some encouraging words from many as they prepare to step out as bigger boys and play bigger boy rugby. They also provided an energising Guard of Honour for the seniors following.

We welcomed some fresh, young talented players to our 1XV. Sam Sinclair has returned home to Chiltern at Centre resemblant of our mighty Scotland and British Lion International,

Blair Kinghorn with quite a surge of speed and high knee action. At Full Back we welcomed Louie Mould an all running kicking, catching and passing lad from our good friends at Aylesbury. Finally on debut from the bench is Harry Stevens, Chiltern made and a previous Harlequins student. Again, an exciting talent who will undoubtedly add some zap to our significantly improved back line.

MATCH REPORT

And so, to the action - Blistering start from A&C in the sun. A bit of a breeze though swirling around. Expectant crowd with a decent number of travelling support. It seemed like a training ground move to start and on 2 mins fantastic rucking and quick ball at pace. Ball through the hands of the backs with Sammy Sinclair (and these high knees) finishing off a cracking try. Duly converted by Aaron Lewis (7-0). Then on 12mins and against the run of play Southend began losing some of their ‘coach legs’ and finished off an equalising try after some strong forward gains. (7-5). Soon after following a penalty Aaron then added to the A&C lead (10-5). Southend drew nearer by penalty (10-8) before some tactical foul play earned a Saxon a yellow card. This seemed to spurn Southend on and with another decent attack their 2nd try was secured under the posts just before half-time. With conversion (HT 10 - 15).

A&C came out full of energy of the 2nd half, relentlessly attacking the clubhouse end and were rewarded quickly when hooker and captain Joe Batt bulldozed his way over for an encouraging score. Duly converted by Aaron (17-15). Only 4 mins later it was Harry Stevens off the bench bursting though from his own half with a pass out the back of his hand unleashing the backs to have back row Jordan Scott finish off a try similar to that of Josh Finch’s against Sudbury on the last day of last season. Again, duly converted by Aaron. Saxons could just have been sunk (24-15).

But No! In true bogey team tradition and all credit to them the Saxons began to fight back. In the 55th and 64th mins 2 converted tries from malls near our line secured their victory (24 - 29) and their bonus point. We did well to earn our single point as within 7pts. Alas we were one short of an additional point with 3 tries. Another fantastic game between 2 well drilled teams.

MATCH REPORT

Saturday 13th September 2025 - 2pm Billing Road, Northampton.

Old Northamptonians 1 XV - 17 v Amersham and Chiltern 1XV - 19 (HT 10-15)

CHILTERN CHEER AS OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS FALL SHORT

CHUMBAWAMBA - TUBTHUMPING 1997

‘We’ll be singing - when we’re winnin’ We’ll be singing I get knocked down - but I get up again You’re never going to keep me down I get knocked down But I get up again You’re never going to keep me down’

Old Northamptonians (ONs) were always going to give our A&C side a r’un for their money’ as the 4th placed team last year and with home advantage. Licking their wounds from a heavy Sudbury defeat away, they would have been determined to take as many

points as possible to kick start their new season. For Amersham and Chiltern especially, recent memories of any exciting draw with ONs at Weedon Lane and a hard-fought narrow loss with Southend Saxons last week, it meant that there was undoubted confidence that a win could be secured.

With some amazing dark and white clouds in the sky we braced for an early rain shower as the wind speed increased, and the rainbows appeared. In what is becoming a tradition Chiltern started well, with lots of energy and benefitted from a more downward slope on a well prepared pitch. Sadly after 20 mins of pressure and opportunity for A&C the game remained pointless.

breakdown and sniped through to score under the posts. The deficit overturned and now a lead of (12-19)

We do like it tough and all credit to ONs when soon after they responded with a try in the corner. Tough conversion duly missed and turned out to be crucial (17-19)

MATCH REPORT

Until, Hooker and Captain Joe Batt finished off a strong catch and drive with a move blind to score in the corner. Tricky conversion missed (0-5). ONs responded well though and their young side had the energy to make the gains uphill to also sniped equalise soon after (5-5). The conversion was short. With A&C losing some of their momentum and big No8 Kaz being concussed this was the time for much needed consolidation and an adjustment in playing style.

With this pause ONs capitalised with another good try this time under the posts after a strong running attack (12-5) and H/T.

With A&C now playing up the slope ONs had I think a decent advantage for the 2nd half. With that in mind it appeared A&C were up for the challenge and with a great deal of effort quickened the tempo and mounted a series of attacks. With consistent possession twice Ben Harris at Scrum half took quick ball from the

A&C then did well to defend their narrow lead and in the end were deserved victors. Great first win of the season with some disappointment the win was not more convincing.

Next week - it’s the visit of Huel Tring fresh from a convincing home victory against Sudbury. They will be determined to avenge victory at Weedon Lane last season. We will also be joined at home at long last alongside our fellow squad members, the 2s who also play Tring in a friendly. Times to be confirmed although 1s a 3pm ko.

A&C 1XV - 1. Charlie Swerling 2. Joe Batt. 3. Doug McGregor-Smith. 4. Kieran Booth. 5. Harry Bradshaw. 6. Jordan Scott. 7. Andrew Toole. 8. Kazeem Olayinka 9. Conor Segre. 10. Aaron Lewis 11. FROM THE TOUCHLINE

891 London Rd

A double dose of HUEL Tring: our first teams were always scheduled to clash in a Regional 1 South East league fixture but we’re also taking advantage of a fallow week in both sides’ programmes to entertain their Seconds in a friendly. That game starts at 1.30pm, so the players should be finished in time to watch the main event at three o’clock. We offer a warm welcome to all the HUEL Tring players, officials and supporters visiting us today.

High Wycombe HP10 9TB 01494

Honours were even in the games between the two 1st XVs last year. Newly promoted, we lost 43-31 over at Cow Lane last September but had found our feet by the time we played the return fixture. A 33-12 victory just before Christmas was probably one of our three best three performance of the season. HUEL Tring started this campaign with a big home win against Sudbury and lost competitively at Letchworth last week. HUEL Tring are sixth in the table after two games and we are seventh, both on five points, so today should be a close affair.

Welcome to Arnold Funeral Service Match Day Lunch

Two weeks ago, we narrowly lost our first game of the season at home to Southend, 25-29. Not surprisingly, given the scoreline, it was a game we could have won. Sammy Sinclair’s first try was a slick indication of the potential in our back line. Joe Batt notched a typical poacher’s score and Jordan Scott rounded off an early contender for try of the season. Most people saw Joe Batt score another but, sadly, the referee was on the other side of the ruck and could not give it. Along with Sammy, debutants Louie Mould and Harry Stevens looked as though they will significantly strengthen the squad. Two of Southend’s tries came courtesy of the skills of their excellent No.10 and the other two followed prolonged periods of forward pressure on our line –would that we had been able to show the same kind of patience and discipline.

Last week, the 1s went to Old Northamptonians and came away with a 17-19 win and four points. Andy Grant’s match report says Joe Batt scored our first try; I thought it was Noah Jarvis, but Andy was closer. Despite first use of a strong wind and slope, we turned round 12-5 down at half time, but Ben Harris got on the end of some powerful picking and driving to score two tries under the posts. We lost at ONs last year, so the victory certainly marks our progress, but the boys were honest enough to say afterwards that they had played better the week before. A win’s a win.

The second XV started their league campaign last week within a 31-36 defeat at home to Maidenhead. We scored some great tries and put in some hard tackles but the visitors’ greater weight in the forwards told in the end. A few of the old lags should be back to shore things up today. The 3s also started their season last Friday, with a big win against High Wycombe.

Finally, as well as our guests from HUEL Tring, we welcome the Chiltern Hundreds for their annual run about and lunch. As things stand, it’s not clear how much exercise will actually be taken, but keen observers will note that the Vets have lost none of their bar skills.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

ANDY CARL SAUNDERS

There’s only 14 weeks until Christmas is amongst us once again. All that mistletoe and wine and Christians singing Christian rhymes, Christmas jumpers and of course our beloved wanderers return home after reaching nearly halfway in their academic year.

There is, though, something more significant this Christmas. Something that many of you may not know. So, it is my pleasure to set the scene regarding this ‘Spotlight’ and introduce ‘Andy Carl Saunders’ as it is he who becomes the next Amersham and Chiltern RFC Chairman this Christmas .

I am told that the transfer of power is bit like that of Doctor Who when our beloved Huw Thomas lays down, tired and exhausted in the Grayburn Room after sipping a Grayburn IPA, as someone sprinkles the magic potion, sings the A&C anthem (red and white is dynamite) and Andy Saunders then emerges as his name is painted on the glorious wooden board. It is also the case that it is important that the Chairpersons are of similar height and stature to make the metamorphosis smoother.

I therefore ask to meet the ‘Chairman in Waiting’ in the very room where the ceremony takes place. It’s the first time I’ve see the ‘Throne’ and notice that it seems to have been adapted for backs, especially scrum halves. It’s raised to make them seem taller and as I take my seat on the sofa, quite sunk down, I actually feel just a little intimidated. Andy quickly settles me with his calm voice and offers some Haribos and a Coke Zero. I feel good

Way way back in 1965 (I wasn’t even born), the town of Maidenhead was blessed when young Andrew (great name and saintly) was born on their patch. Over these many years Andy has grown to be 1m 76cm thus allowing him to be a highly effective, ‘cheeky chappy’ scrum half. He explains that he was always tough to tackle as he had speed, could run between legs and had a

Surprisingly the first result he looks for in the rugby Premiership is that of Sale Sharks. I ask why? He makes ‘no comment’ and moves on. I suspect northern influences but can’t prove it - yet! Beyond playing Andy has been very involved with Wasps. Northampton Saints and Saracens. He explains that as a result he has always had to work very hard in business to ensure he has enough wardrobe space for all that

He has also made room for his lovely family. Lesley and their 3(three) girls Holly (29) Gemma (26)

I then choose to delve deeper into his past - just a little as I’ve always detected a northern twang to his accent. I manage

to establish that he is well travelled as he started out as a big Berkshire baby (didn’t last) before moving and being brought up in Cambridgeshire, going to University in Sheffield and then settling in the Chesham Bois.

When offered a single wish from a passing Fairy Godmother he pauses to give thought. He looks at me as I stand up to stretch my legs. ‘I’d like to be taller Andy’ - bless! Andy is a huge fan of Dan Kingsley. Dan the Peter Pan of rugby in that he never grows old. He coached him in his very first age group and was impressive even way back then. Conor Segre our current 1st Team scrum half, is also a player he admires. ‘It is a 9 thing’Andy and I really get that.

When considering his ambitions for A&C, first and foremost he sees A&C as a club that is a fun place to play, with an inclusive environment for all our players and members. In doing that as a club we all need to embrace the developments that are planned over the next couple of years. If we do this then in 5 years’ time we will all be benefitting from a rugby club that is bigger, better, faster more and even open for 7 days a week. Bit of a goose-pimple moment here as Andy is a very passionate man.

I calm him down and I notice he reclines, a little in his throne. I remain standing as the couch is a bit low. We talk about his favourite music. Simple Minds, Coldplay and Imagine Dragons. I do think

Simple Minds is his out and out favourite as he knows all the words and sings a mean opening line ‘you turn me on’ - fortunately I know that song well as it is my Glasgow collection of tunes. We duet. He confirms this as his favourite song is Belfast Girl - a very moody little number and I don’t know the words to that one.

Scarily his favourite colour is orange - popular also with the blue side of Glasgow. Andy explains that his love of orange is nothing to do with Rangers FC but rather it a shade of Firesand - a posh orange? To drink he is anyone’s for a dark and stormy, particularly enjoying the potency of the ginger beer rather than the copious amount of alcohol. I believe you.

He nibbles on twiglets and takes packets of them abroad to share as his ultimate holiday is one with lots of mates. I find this an interesting area to explore but don’t have time as we need to leave the Grayburn Room as there is a delivery of new kit and it can’t stay there. If pushed though Andy clarifies that he is a Barbados boy (thought so). He then produces a couple on bottles on Banks Beer, we toast A&C success, and we both lift the throne back to storage in the Refs Room shower.

Andy is not available to be the next PMtheir loss our gain.

I feel inspiredAndrew Carl Saunders we salute you!

SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS

Why do we need Sponsors and Advertisers?

The rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse events and sponsors means we just about break even.

Last season we celebrated 100 years of our active presence in the local community. The senior club was founded in 1924 and just as importantly we were one of the pioneer clubs who started mini rugby 51 years ago. We continue to provide a wonderful rugby experience for players and supporters of all ages.

Peter, pictured here, always in his A&C attire, chatting on match day

Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we have done various fundraising schemes to improve every aspect of the club. The clubhouse itself was the biggest and others have followed such as the solar panels, the new car park and of course the borehole. All of these investments make it possible to start the season.

Incidentally with our energy costs increasing dramatically we need to focus on ways to become more energy efficient. We continually invest and the Centenary fundraising offers a great opportunity to make more progress. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days.

Of course, our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days.

So, without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages and their coaches too.

We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them.

Ruthie Brockett, our Sponsorship & Publicity Manager, will be delighted to hear from you with ideas and suggestions. Please contact her on sponsorship@chilternrugby.com.

Most importantly we want our members to enjoy using the products and services in this programme.

Thank you for supporting our great Club.

AMERSHAM & CHILTERN WOULD LIKE TO THANK ITS SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT THROUGHOUT 2025/26
