Chairman’s Welcome

Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time.

For 2023-24, our First XV will once again play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league, which contains teams from both the London and South-West Division. Six of the sides have changed from last year so it will be interesting to see whether our high finish last year can be replicated. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here.

Our Second XV plays in the snappily titled Counties 3 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon South league. This is a Level Nine league, with a good proportion of local fixtures (Drifters, Farnham Royal, Marlow, Windsor): we hope that this will improve availability, which was an issue in 2022-23. The Seconds play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. Their fixtures alternate with the First XV, so please give them your support if you aren’t travelling away with the 1s.

Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. We hope to resurrect our 3rd XV this year, on an occasional basis. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to

anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.

As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along.

If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service.

I really hope that you have an enjoyable day with us today. If you do, and you want to come back, please pick up a fixture card from the bar. Anyone and everyone you might want to contact is listed there. If you’re really modern, the information is also on our excellent website.

Leicester Tigers, England & British Lions

Legends are made at Welford Road and few Leicester Tigers are bigger than Dean Richards. A talismanic presence, characterised by loose shirt and rolled-down socks, ‘Deano’ always seemed to be in the right place at the right time - one phase ahead, or two behind!

Born in Nuneaton, Dean made his senior club debut as an 18 year old in 1982 away at Neath, where they reserve a special Valleys welcome for the English. Dean quickly became a fixture at No8 (Leicester ‘G’ shirt), and was the youngest Tiger to play in the John Player Cup Final in 1983. He went on make 314 appearances for Leicester. He made his England debut in 1986, the first of 48 caps, playing in Grand Slam triumphs in 1992 and 1993. He also played in six Tests for the British Lions in Australia and New Zealand. And, all this whilst working as a Hinckley policeman.

In 1998, Dean moved from player to Director of Rugby at Leicester, winning the title in his first four years. Subsequently, he moved to Grenoble, Harlequins and Newcastle Falcons. But, for his legion of fans, the image of the ‘G’ shirt, together with the ‘Deano Deano’ chant, will forever be part of Tigers lore.

We also welcome A&C’s very own Steve Williams, one of the most exciting live performers on the comedy club circuit to keep us entertained.

As well as the excellent entertainment, the price includes a welcoming glass of beer, three course meal and two bottles of A&C’s finest wines per table:

The 2nd XV have secured top spot in their league and the club’s first honours of the season.

Saturday 2nd March was meant to be the league decider against Henley III, but it was off because of the ground conditions. Henley are not able to field a team for the postponed game on Saturday 9th and so conceded the match: the five points mean that our lads can’t be caught. This is a great result, mainly down to the hard work and commitment of the players,

under Dave Cole and Johnny Rice. I know they would want to acknowledge the support they have had from the coaching and management team, in particular DoR Pete Gibson and team manager Adam ‘Cookie’ Cook. Andy Saunders also came in at the end of the season and pushed the guys over the line. Well done all! The season is coming nicely to the boil. With three Junior Bucks Cup Winners and the First XV are in with a good chance of their own league championship.

What a beginning to the finale weeks of the season. Congratulations to the A&C 2XV.

Chiltern win the Treble!

A&C U14s, U15s & U16s flew the flag for Amersham and the surrounding area winning all three of the Buckinghamshire RFU Junior Cup Finals at Marlow RFC last weekend.

The Under 14’s got Chiltern off to the perfect start with a 22-5 win against Aylesbury. The Under 15’s then won a close final against Beaconsfield courtesy of some excellent defence at the end to close out a nail biting finish. Not to be outdone the Under 16’s sealed a perfect day for Amersham & Chiltern courtesy of a 20-14 win against Beaconsfield.

Our Junior Chairman, Richard Clifford, was understandably delighted that all three trophies headed back to Weedon Lane. “A massive congratulations to all three age groups, we knew we had three competitive teams but to win all three finals was simply incredible. A massive thank you to the coaches, parents, and our supporters as well as Buckinghamshire RFU for organising and Marlow RFC for hosting. Well done also to Aylesbury and Beaconsfield for the part their teams played in three cracking games of rugby.”

Despite the rain, it was a very bright day looking into the future for A&C.

A&C RFC CENTENARY

2024 is a significant date in the club’s history, our Centenary. The first ever match was played on Boxing Day in 1924 between a Chiltern team and a team of Berkhamsted Old Boys. The club was formed shortly after and apart from the war years (when incidentally a third of our players were killed in action) the club has always been at the heart of the local community. Nearly 50 years ago we were amongst the first clubs in the country to embrace Mini and Junior rugby and now provide sporting and social opportunities to all ages.

In spite of being one of the biggest and best value sporting organisations in the area we are entirely self supporting. We are a charity and every year spend significant sums maintaining the infrastructure of the clubhouse and grounds. As well as subscriptions we are dependent on the support of our wonderful sponsors and advertisers, without whom the club would struggle to stay afloat.

Our Centenary celebrations will run throughout the 2024/25 season. As events are firmed up we will share the details with you. A number of people have already come up with good ideas. In particular we want to use the occasion to raise significant funds to make the club as a whole, and the clubhouse in particular, more sustainable. Key events will include a Centenary dinner in October 2024, a December replay of the first club match against a Berkhamsted XV, and a match against a County XV with players chosen from all the Bucks clubs. Traditional club events such as the Minis Festival and the Presidents lunch will all continue as usual with a Centenary theme. There will be a Centenary ball at the end of the 24/25 season.

A new logo will be designed for the Centenary and this will feature on a range of special Centenary playing and leisure kit.

We are now looking for people to help make this happen. We need volunteers from all sections of the club to join the Centenary committee and to take ownership of key events. We have formed a task force with Jennie Cahill, myself and others who will convert ideas into actions over the coming months. If you would like to join us please contact Jennie, on 07894 293905 or jennie.cahill@icloud.com and we will arrange another meeting and look forward to working with you.

Thank you for being part of our Club and for all your support.

On behalf of the centenary working group

two points with a fine try hall and narrow loss.

Three games to go and six points ahead, matters regarding promotion remain in our hands.

Now for the action…

After only 5 minutes and opening pressure pays off with an opening try from Flash (Jordan Sullivan-Warner), our flying winger. Chiltern having all the play (0-5), a gorgeous conversion from the touch line for Callum Hutchinson (0-7).

Mattio then bangs his head off the 4G pitch and is replaced by Kieran Booth after only 10 minutes. Jack Kenyon then scores a 2nd try after a great move, from Dave Frances, out from the backs after marauding (0-12).

Off the post and over for another great conversion from Callum (0-14).

Nothing in response from HAC. Stunned! Jack Kenyon scored again after creeping up and exploding up the pitch with a cheeky interception (0-19), once again easily converted by Callum (0-21).

HAC seem down and out. Then just like at Twickenham, England v Scotland 2019, a try and conversion from HAC.

It seemed to wake them up and in time for a half-time motivational chat by the HAC coach and players.

Half Time: 7-21

Clearly, we didn’t want to win the league easily and like your deepest nightmare HAC re-emerged from the rugby wilderness with

some outstanding rugby and some breaks.

HAC score a try under the posts (14-21), followed by a HAC try in the corner (1921).

Another HAC try and into the lead they go (24-21). Another HAC try (31-21) and converted.

Then it was the Chiltern response from Jordan Scott with a fine try (32 -26), and a great conversion from Callum (32-28) and then Jack Kenyon again for his 3rd try (31 -35) with conversion.

MATCH REPORT

With 15 minutes extra time and the longest 2 minutes in the world there was time for a HAC winner. Last play of the game. A classic (38-35).

A game never to be forgotten.

This week: Home to fellow Bucks team Marlow RFC. Top v 9th. Marlow will be keen to do better than their 3-40 loss at home back in November and come on the back of a decent win at home against 10th placed, Aylesbury, 38-19.

Welcome to the day of the President’s Lunch, always a highlight of our social calendar. Many past players will have made what is, in some cases, quite a significant effort to be here and they, together with the President’s guests, are very welcome. Thanks for organising the event go to Scott Jarrold, Tony Tagent, Nick Hayes and of course the indefatigable Jennie Cahill. It’s going to be a splendid occasion.

01494 472

I will come to the 1st XV in a moment, but I really ought to begin by celebrating last weekend’s moments of triumph in other parts of the club. On Saturday, the 2nd XV clinched their league title and won promotion back to level 8 in the RFU pyramid. Last season was a pretty dire one for them and this year has seen a remarkable transformation in their fortunes. They have won every game but one so far (and travel to Marlow to try to avenge that defeat today). Captains Dave Cole and Johnny Rice deserve great credit for turning things round. They would want to acknowledge the support they have received from the senior coaches and from manager Adam Cook. Director of Rugby Pete Gibson has foregone numerous 1st XV games to run the side and his drive has been critical in its revival. But it’s the commitment of each and every player that has been the key factor, and they richly deserve their success.

On Sunday, our Junior teams made a clean sweep of the County Cup Finals, on a wet day down at Marlow. The U14s defeated Aylesbury, while the U15s and U16s both beat a team from Beaconsfield. All the games were closely fought but in all three it was hallmark Chiltern determination in defence that won the day. It’s a fantastic achievement for the coaches of each group, and testament to Matt Allen’s wonderful work across Mini and Junior rugby. But again, it’s the players who wear the victor’s laurels, and rightly so.

The 1st XV face Marlow today, and we welcome the committee members, players and supporters of our old friends. We also welcome referee George Wallington-Smith, from Bucks RFURS. There’s no doubt that we need a win this afternoon. Two weeks ago, Chiltern lost a thriller 38-35 to HAC. This left us six points clear with three games to go. The outcome of the competition is therefore entirely in our hands: ten points from the possible fifteen and no one can catch us. But can we do it? Next week’s match is away at second placed Belsize Park, who won at Ash Grove in December, and will be a huge challenge. Marlow have coped well in their first season at this level for a while, notably thumping Aylesbury 38-19 last time out, so they’ll be hard to beat. Grasshoppers will come here on the last day of the season with nothing to lose. It’s still all to play for, so the important thing is that the boys focus on the task in hand and, to recite the old cliché, take each game as it comes. I think they will.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

PETER GIBSON

(GIBO)

A&C DIRECTOR OF RUGBY

It doesn’t take me long to find Peter for our time together putting the big man under the spotlight. He’s a hard man to miss with his silver hair. A true fox amongst men and in fact a very keen fisherman.

He’s asked to meet me at Chalfont St Giles Pond. I arrive ill-prepared not realising he had his waders on, with rubber all the way up to his monstrous thighs. A crowd begins to form prior to him returning to the shore to enjoy a packed lunch as the rain begins to fall.

d I’m surprised he is as old as 53 with his youthful looks. A keen eyebrow plucker and regular wearer of moisturiser, Gibo is a man to always look good even when up to his arm pits in pond water. Born in the wild in deepest Christchurch, New Zealand Peter blessed the rugby turf of his most loved club, Christchurch RFC. ‘It’s

where it all started Andy! You must love your first rugby club the most – don’t you?’ He explains that it was there he scored his first try and had his first punch-up. It was where he first savoured victory and endured loss. It was where he first showered in front of other men and where he taped up his ears to protect his stunning good looks. ‘So many memories Andy’.

Growing up on the South Island meant he got used to the odd earthquake and therefore experienced the earth moving frequently. At this point, and very timely, he explains his fantasy. I was expecting him to explain his passion for Ellie McPherson, once super-model only to find that he really fantasises about having a huge fish tank full of the most colourful warm water fish in the world. Now that’s what I call a passion for fish.

Peter and I then discuss a few of his favourite things and there is no surprise when he explains it’s lashings of ice cold beer, having a BBQ, snacking on dry roasted peanuts and eating freshly caught Wahoo fish. In the evening he likes to sit down alongside Nicola and watch the original Star Wars film, paying particular attention to his favourite character Luke Skywalker and booing at Darth Vader.

For such an impressively built man there is then surprise when he explains he only has size 12 feet. He’s adamant that the rest of his body is big but no detail provided. On Thursday nights he loves to shout loudly at the television during Question Time as he honestly believes politicians talk nonsense. He dreams of one day winning millions and donating all the money to build fantastic new facilities at his new favourite club Amersham and Chiltern RFC.

To relax he is a regular listener of InXs and can be heard often singing along to the sounds of ‘original sin’. Peter does have a lovely singing voice. He would also love to sing in a local choir.

Peter would so love for the New Zealand football team to be so much better. He also still has amazing memories of his time in Kenya, running holiday tours and party nights at swanky hotels. Known as ‘Peter of the Jungle’ and as a prolific walker he was then the man that made the paths for the rich tourists to admire the local lions. A true Tarzan, loin cloth at the ready, he had active days, and all washed down with a Dawa cocktail (vodka, lime juice, clear honey and ice).

Peter ‘Gibo’ Gibson, our DoR, gentleman, man mermaid, Captain Birdseye and true local hero. We salute you!
