Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time. For 2023-24, our First XV will once again play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league, which contains teams from both the London and South-West Division. Six of the sides have changed from last year so it will be interesting to see whether our high finish last year can be replicated. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. Our Second XV plays in the snappily titled Counties 3 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon South league. This is a Level Nine league, with a good proportion of local fixtures (Drifters, Farnham Royal, Marlow, Windsor): we hope that this will improve availability, which was an issue in 2022-23. The Seconds play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. Their fixtures alternate with the First XV, so please give them your support if you aren’t travelling away with the 1s. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. We hope to resurrect our 3rd XV this year, on an occasional basis. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to
anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome. As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along. If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. 2024 is a significant date in the club’s history, our Centenary. The first ever match was & C HBoxing played Day in 1924 between a Chiltern team and a team of Berkhamsted I LT M on E HA Old Boys. The club was formed shortly after and apart from the war years (when incidentally a third of our players were killed in action) the club has always been at the heart of the local community. Nearly 50 years ago we were amongst the first clubs in the Tcountry to embrace Mini and Junior rugby and now provide sporting and social EN 4A R Y 1 9 2to opportunities all ages. In spite of being one of the biggest and best value sporting organisations in the area we are entirely self supporting. We are a charity and every year spend significant sums maintaining the infrastructure of the clubhouse and grounds. As well as subscriptions we are dependent on the support of our wonderful sponsors and advertisers, without whom the club would struggle to stay afloat. Our Centenary celebrations will run throughout the 2024/25 season. As events are firmed up we will share the details with you. A number of people have already come up with good ideas. In particular we want to use the occasion to raise significant funds to make the club as a whole, and the clubhouse in particular, more sustainable. Key events will include a Centenary dinner in October 2024, a December replay of the first club match against a Berkhamsted XV, and a match against a County XV with players chosen from all the Bucks clubs. Traditional club events such as the Minis Festival and the Presidents lunch will all continue as usual with a Centenary theme. There will be a Centenary ball at the end of the 24/25 season. A new logo will be designed for the Centenary and this will feature on a range of special Centenary playing and leisure kit. We are now looking for people to help make this happen. We need volunteers from all sections of the club to join the Centenary committee and to take ownership of key events. We have formed a task force with Jennie Cahill, myself and others who will convert ideas into actions over the coming months. lways eagerly awaited and it never disappoints. The Amersham Aylesbury derby is always hard fought with the winners undoubtedly being the biggest grinners in Bucks. Top place versus 9th place and with home advantage, (following a 22-26 September win away) the betting was probably firmly with A&C. In good conditions and a freshly raked and rolled pitch the scene was set for a Bucks banger of a match.
Just a few minutes after kick off and early Amersham pressure Aylesbury found themselves a wee bit eager to defend. Offside Tom Fawssett secured an early penalty. After further pressure towards the Clubhouse it was our top scorer and try machine Jordan Scott (Number 8) who took the ball off the hip of a team-mate to then run under the posts untouched. Followed by a Fawssett conversion.

A brooding Lloyd Anderson at Centre then burst into action following some great buildup play slicing through a poor defence and again found space under the posts to flop over for a terrific straight forward try. Again, a Fawssett conversion (17-0).
Tom Fawssett then scored in the corner for our 3rd (missing a tough conversion) before the final try (jinky scrum half Alex Bower with a hop step and jump) securing our bonus point win.

Aylesbury fought hard throughout playing some decent rugby and relentless in defence. Outstanding performance from their stand-off both with the boot,
MATCH REPORT distribution, and handling. Three tries in total and very late try to conclude. Good effort. The grand finale and pride of place on ‘rugby dump’ was Aaron Lewis’s audacious drop goal. The crowd stood silent and in awe as they witnessed probably one of the best and longest drop goals in Weedon Lane history. From just over the halfway line. Best wishes to Jacques O’Driscoll and Lloyd Anderson who both needed some love, care and attention at hospital. Jacques rescuing his good looks after a wee bit of head damage and Lloyd fixing his fingers and thumb after experiencing a wee bit of trauma after contact and running too fast. After a weekend off we return to Weedon Lane on Saturday 27th January 2024 to welcome 6th place Chobham. This follows our (12–51) win back in October. This fixture follows our Friday evening’s entertainment celebrating the life and times of Rabbie Burns. The club will be decked in tartan as we celebrate the good poet and heritage of probably one of the finest countries in the world. Details on website re attendance and payment.

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Chobham RFC. As far as anyone can tell, this is the first time Chiltern have played them at home. Our first match against them was in mid-October, when they were very gracious hosts, something we hope to reciprocate today. We won the game by a sizeable score, but that didn’t really reflect what was happening on the field, where it was a very close contest for an hour. Chobham are having a strong season and lie fifth in the table, so our boys will need to be at their best today. Mr Emmerson Wood of Bucks RFURS will be keeping order, and he is, as ever, very welcome too. We did not have any games last week, so I have little to report other than the victory over Aylesbury a fortnight ago. We won 32-24, perhaps more comfortably than that score suggests: Having opened proceedings with seven points that came courtesy of some uncharacteristic carelessness on our part, Aylesbury converted a try with the last kick of the match, so we dominated the meat of the game. Jordan Scott, Lloyd Anderson, Tom Fawssett and Alex Bower contributed the tries that gained the bonus point, but Aaron Lewis’s huge drop goal at an important time probably had the spectators most excited. It’s always good to win the derbies. Sadly, Lloyd broke his hand during the game (don’t look at the X-rays) and will be unavailable for the next six weeks. He joins Dan Kingsley, Kieran Booth and Conor Segre on the list of long term injured players. Add the names of Warwick South and James Lewis, both of whom have had to stop playing for career reasons (unreservedly, we wish them well) and you will see that our resources are significantly depleted. As if that wasn’t enough, Charlie Swerling went down with a painful knee injury and Jacques O’Driscoll needed stitches in a cut over his eye last week, which have not healed well enough for him to be able to play today. Jacques should be back soon but, all in all, it is testimony to the depth of the squad that we can still put out a very strong team today. The Second XV head down to Tadley for their own league match. They are still top of their table but filling the gaps in the Firsts will leave them facing a serious examination. I’m sure they ‘ll be up to it. Having received complaints about the length of my Chairman’s message last week, I will leave it there. If I look ill when you see me, it will be the effects of Friday’s Burns Night and therefore Andy Grant’s fault. HUW

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT JOE BATT (HOOKER) It’s not often I venture to a graveyard in the wee small hours in the middle of winter. I have though, made a special effort to sit down and take time out with our Hooker (number 2) Joe Batt. I’m wearing my walking boots and some reflective strips on my jacket. A torch on my head allows me to spot Joe sitting by a gravestone with his ear pods in and chewing on a large chicken kebab. He is a traditionalist and adores his Dad. ‘He is my hero Andy and by all accounts I look just like him’. His Dad, we have a lot to thank him for as he was the one who brought Joe to Weedon Lane to play for A&C back in 2003. Joe then offers me a curry from his rucksack and explains that it can be difficult to choose between a curry and a kebab. He
therefore likes to eat both especially after a few beers. Joe is very comfortable in cemeteries and especially graveyards within church grounds. He likes hearing the hooting of owls and strangely the sound of Bats squealing in the bushes. He works as a memorial mason and consultant and is very handy with a hammer and chisel. Another lad born within the hamlet of High Wycombe he is now 26 years of age, adoring the Chiltern colours of white and claret-Pantone (PMS) 208c. Joe likes to specific. Once he has enjoyed curry and kebab, he likes nothing more than sucking on a caramel and chocolate digestive biscuit (room temperature). Strangely after the sweetness he adores the devouring of cheesy chips. Such a forward! Now no longer hungry Joe relaxes and starts feeling comfortable explaining the comfort
of his favourite navy-blue boxers. ‘Pants can rub Andy’ he says with a slight grin ☺. He also tells me that both laddies and lassies love his legs. ‘It’s the muscle definition Andy and the thoroughness of my shaving that attracts’ – this is why he tend to wear long trousers.
There is not a single country he detests. He is a lover and not a fighter. He does though recount the brief spell he spent in Port Talbot, Wales. It was when he was in Year 10 and on a Geography trip. He found the Welsh quite scary with loud voices and wearing daffodils on their heads.
A country he does love is though Madeira (Portugal). He loves the cake and adores the port. The volcanic sand also helps to keep his skin smooth and silky. Joe is first in the queue in the morning to buy the Daily Mail. He likes the pictures and the adverts very much. Joe reminds me that he is a lover and is in fact in love with a beautiful lady. Lust or love I ask? Love he says and giggles – very sweet. On a Saturday night you can find him in Pop World – Watford. He explains he
wears big woolly jumpers and dungarees when he goes there. A baseball cap completes his Super Mario look. Joe craves a Watford FC and Chiltern RFC double this year in league and cup. He adores Wasps RFC and watches the film School of Rock on repeat. I understand now why he enjoys feasting in graveyards and how much he enjoys life and rugby. Joe you are a marauder and a Chiltern stalwart. We salute you!

he rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse and sponsors means we just about break even. We have been active in the local community for close to 100 years. In fact, our Centenary Season is 2024/2025. Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we have done various fundraising schemes to Peter, pictured here, always improve every aspect of the club. The clubhouse itself in his A&C attire, chatting on was the biggest and others have followed such as solar match day panels, the new car park and of course the borehole, without which we would not have been able to start the season on Saturday. Incidentally our energy costs have increased dramatically, and we now have a renewed focus on ways to become more energy efficient and sustainable. Pitch maintenance is another big expense, with an extra £20,000 spent this summer on top of the £35,000 spent last year in addition to the upgraded our floodlights. We now estimate that we need to spend some £100,000+ on club house refurbishments. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days. And of course our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days. So without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages. We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them.
