21 EASTON STREET, HIGH WYCOMBE, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, HP11 1NT

Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time. For 2023-24, our First XV will once again play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league, which contains teams from both the London and South-West Division. Six of the sides have changed from last year so it will be interesting to see whether our high finish last year can be replicated. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. Our Second XV plays in the snappily titled Counties 3 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon South league. This is a Level Nine league, with a good proportion of local fixtures (Drifters, Farnham Royal, Marlow, Windsor): we hope that this will improve availability, which was an issue in 2022-23. The Seconds play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. Their fixtures alternate with the First XV, so please give them your support if you aren’t travelling away with the 1s. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. We hope to resurrect our 3rd XV this year, on an occasional basis. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to

anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome. As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along. If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I really hope that you have an enjoyable day with us today. If you do, and you want to come back, please pick up a fixture card from the bar. Anyone and everyone you might want to contact is listed there. If you’re really modern, the information is also on our excellent website.

t’s always a great visit to the home of Old Priorian RFC. Always sides that are competing at the top of the league. Both teams with an undoubted focus on rugby. Both sides with plenty of ‘grow your own’ players, youthful and exciting in style and supporters who appreciate entirely the efforts made by players and officials involved within grass roots rugby. This was match eagerly anticipated and in essence certainly didn’t disappoint.

We were undoubtedly blessed from above. With us all poised to build some arks we in fact turned up at the ground to find probably one of the best prepared pitches ever. It was even dry to the touch, firm, superbly marked and fitting of the Masters. All credit to ground staff. We were also blessed with the presence of Dave Crimp who asked to run touch. Looking as good as always he tucked his trousers in his socks and ran that line

the rugby. I don’t think there will be that detail I will though summarize as follows. Strong start from a well-supported and sprightly OP side. Deserving of a 12 min penalty opportunity for some offside and an early 3 points on the board (3–0). Chiltern came more into the game although even early on and some good rucking and line out pressure the Chiltern mistakes were mounting up. With no momentum really coming it wasn’t long (23 minutes) for OPs to secure another penalty for a high tackle and secure the 6 point lead (6–0).

with precision and integrity. No heckling by anyone – they wouldn’t dare and fine performance as our Touch Judge I got to focus on the game in the hope I could provide more analysis and detail re

Chiltern did then to crank up the gears. Our line out was solid and quite dominant with the OP front row struggling particularly with the positions of their elbows. Our mistakes remained too plentiful. Frustratingly ending some decent spells of pressure and possession. With already most

frustrations from strong OP defence and a continuing feeling of it just not being A&C’s day. There was a pattern: Chiltern pressure… mistake… Chiltern pressure… mistake. Until on 72 minutes Alex Bower secured the winning penalty for a (9–10) win. It really wasn’t until the final play that OPs had a go towards our line. Outstanding defence again by Chiltern. No tries conceded with kicking penalties being the only option. A&C playing and finding a way to win. Great and fair battle of rugby and a wonderful advert for all that can be achieved. Great Day! This week: Another top of the table matchup with the visit to Weedon Lane of HAC (Honourable Artillery Company). TheTop team versus the 2nd placed team and both teams unbeaten with a dry sunlit day expected. Amersham will be the place to be seen. See you there.

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas The gentlemen of the Honourable Artillery Company RFC visit us today, and it should be a tremendous game. Both teams have won all their matches so far, with Amersham and Chiltern being top of the Regional 2 Thames table only because they have secured three more bonus points. HAC have a reputation for open, running rugby so it could be a fine spectacle if the conditions allow. Daniel Gore comes over from Hertfordshire to apply the laws and we extend the warmest welcome to him as well as to the players, officials, and supporters of HAC. Chiltern have done very well in the last two games. A hard, physical encounter with Hemel Hempstead ended as a 30-13 win for us but the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story: Hemel scored first, there were two points in it at the break, and Dan Kingsley scored a try to make things completely safe only at the very end of the match. In the first half, Callum Newton had finished off powerful forward drives to bag a brace, and the turning point came on the hour mark, when James Lewis’s extraordinary score from deep inside our 22 broke a long spell of enormous Hemel pressure. If that was tense stuff, last week’s expedition to Old Priorians was really not very good for my blood pressure. Playing down a slight slope (on a beautiful surface), OPs were leading 9-7 at half time (a try from Dan Kingsley again). We pretty much dominated the second half but could not break through a very determined defence. Eventually, the referee gave a penalty against the home side, and Alex Bower calmly slotted the goal. OPs came back furiously but we hung on for a 9-10 win. It was a good result for a side significantly depleted by absence and injury; a special mention to Joe Batt, who celebrated his 100th 1st XV game with an all-action performance. The 2nd XV is away at Henley this afternoon. They too are top of their league, with maximum points from their games (something the 1s can’t now say, as has been pointed out at training). This will be a tough one, though, because Henley 3s are second only by virtue of having played fewer games. Henley have maximum points, just like us, so something has to give. For the sake of completeness, I should also report that the other teams who play in a league, the Colts and the U16s, are also top of their respective tables with maximum points. It can’t last forever but we’re enjoying it. Away from the playing field, I hope that many of you enjoyed our fireworks display last Friday. It was a fantastic event and raised a lot of money for the club. Congratulations to John Hollingworth and his superb team of parent volunteers from the U9s. Our next home game is on 2 December, against Belsize Park, and I hope you’ll come along for that. However, I should just warn or remind you that the following fixture at Ash Grove, against Fullerians on 16 December, is preceded by our Christmas Lunch: tickets, tables even, are already being snapped up. Huw

PLAYER PROFILE UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: DAN KINGSLEY His true love is the abacus. He loves

We all believe Dan’s counting. As a child he was inspired by the man! If that wasn’t Count Dracula in Sesame Street and it enough some say he’s a was Big Bird that truly inspired him to lover and not a fighter. Opposition teams therefore love him. He is respected. He sees the positives before many others. He wears slippers in the house, and I know he likes nothing more than a daily walk to his local newsagents to buy his newspaper and a quarter of cola cubes before returning home to prepare for the day ahead. He remains our ‘temporary’ stand off and still misses his favourite role at centre. It really is a pleasure to sit quietly in Dan’s Den discovering his inner self. A king in my eyes and in fact he is genuine Chiltern royalty. Daniel James Douglas Kingsley is a mere 23 years old. He was born in the idyllic Bucks village of Chalfont St Giles, not in a barn and not on Christmas Day, as local rumours have it.

play rugby explaining that he was convinced that when he grew into a big boy we would develop big long legs, be bigger than everyone else, wear yellow clothing and run in a random chicken like kind of way. Of course, that didn’t happen so accountancy called, hence his amazing ability to balance. Blue is the colour for Dan. ‘Rangers Blue’ of course – good lad!

Rugby wise and in line with his nickname on the golf course Dan follows the Sharks. He was drawn to the Durban beaches and has since then fallen in love with the South African style of play and their sunshine. To relax he has fond memories of walking through the Olive Groves and vineyards of Tuscany, listening to Italian opera and chewing on some freshly plucked olives.

Tuscany remains his dream destination with a ‘Tuscan delight’ being a chilled white that he enjoys sipping whilst in his fancy holiday crib. Dan, in fact, makes his own Mojitos and when he does it he really enjoys showing friends and family how to do it. ‘Fresher the better’ and with loads of ice. Every Christmas brings undoubted joy to Dan. He loves a surprise, and he loved Cilla Black. He never asks for a specific present and he always felt that letter writing was a bit of a con by his parents. ‘The best present Andy is the next one’. I’ll certainly be asking him what he got this year. Somewhat surprisingly the Lord of the Rings

films are the ones that hit the button for Dan. Not James Bond and no mention of Die Hard or even Avenging. He makes time in his routine to watch one daily, finding the escapism quite addictive. As a child he was a prolific player of Dungeons and Dragons and therefore feels well qualified to be a ‘Gandalf’ groupie. Dan likes his rest and when dreaming, finds that he is flying high, in fact soaring in the skies like a red kite. If given a wish; it is for Amersham & Chiltern to be promoted and make level 5 again for their Centenary year. What a lovely lad. Dan the Man – we salute you! BY ANDY GRANT

A&C RFC CENTENARY 2024 is a significant date in the club’s history, our Centenary. The first ever match was played on Boxing Day in 1924 between a Chiltern team and a team of Berkhamsted Old Boys. The club was formed shortly after and apart from the war years (when incidentally a third of our players were killed in action) the club has always been at the heart of the local community. Nearly 50 years ago we were amongst the first clubs in the country to embrace Mini and Junior rugby and now provide sporting and social opportunities to all ages. In spite of being one of the biggest and best value sporting organisations in the area we are entirely self supporting. We are a charity and every year spend significant sums maintaining the infrastructure of the clubhouse and grounds. As well as subscriptions we are dependent on the support of our wonderful sponsors and advertisers, without whom the club would struggle to stay afloat. Our Centenary celebrations will run throughout the 2024/25 season. As events are firmed up we will share the details with you. A number of people have already come up with good ideas. In particular we want to use the occasion to raise significant funds to make the club as a whole, and the clubhouse in particular, more sustainable. Key events will include a Centenary dinner in October 2024, a December replay of the first club match against a Berkhamsted XV, and a match against a County XV with players chosen from all the Bucks clubs. Traditional club events such as the Minis Festival and the Presidents lunch will all continue as usual with a Centenary theme. There will be a Centenary ball at the end of the 24/25 season. A new logo will be designed for the Centenary and this will feature on a range of special Centenary playing and leisure kit. We are now looking for people to help make this happen. We need volunteers from all sections of the club to join the Centenary committee and to take ownership of key events. We have formed a task force with Jennie Cahill, myself and others who will convert ideas into actions over the coming months. If you would like to join us please contact Jennie, on 07894 293905 or jennie.cahill@icloud.com and we will arrange another meeting and look forward to working with you.

Thank you for being part of our Club and for all your support. On behalf of the centenary working group Peter Osborne
