21 EASTON STREET, HIGH WYCOMBE, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, HP11 1NT

Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time. For 2023-24, our First XV will once again play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league, which contains teams from both the London and South-West Division. Six of the sides have changed from last year so it will be interesting to see whether our high finish last year can be replicated. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. Our Second XV plays in the snappily titled Counties 3 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon South league. This is a Level Nine league, with a good proportion of local fixtures (Drifters, Farnham Royal, Marlow, Windsor): we hope that this will improve availability, which was an issue in 2022-23. The Seconds play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. Their fixtures alternate with the First XV, so please give them your support if you aren’t travelling away with the 1s. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. We hope to resurrect our 3rd XV this year, on an occasional basis. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to

anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome. As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along. If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I really hope that you have an enjoyable day with us today. If you do, and you want to come back, please pick up a fixture card from the bar. Anyone and everyone you might want to contact is listed there. If you’re really modern, the information is also on our excellent website.

MATCH REPORT Match Report – 30/9/2023 Aylesbury RFC 1XV 22 Tries: 3 Conversions: 3 Penalties: 1

Amersham and Chiltern RFC 1XV – 26 Tries: 7 Conversions: 3 Penalties: 0

‘CHILTS – pride of Bucks, fly the flag as plucky Aylesbury – ‘have a go’ ‘It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it And that’s what gets results” BANANARAMA AND THE FUN BOY THREE, 1982

W

ith a warm welcome to Aylesbury RFC and playing within the beating heart of our Bucks Rugby Club, table topping A&C travelled with a much-changed side to face a 6th placed Aylesbury side undoubtedly also intent on victory. With a significant number of travelling fans and of course Huw and Paul ‘dynamite’ in red and white after a lunch time feast, the expectant crowd were not disappointed as they witnessed a very enthralling match.

Who would come out ‘top of the pops’ or in rugby terms to be the current ‘pride of Bucks’? After an opening 20 mins of some probing thrusts, potent runs and sprinkling of goal line pressure it was in fact Aylesbury who made the early gains and were rewarded on 24minutes with a well-deserved opening try and conversion. In a Ryder Cup kind of a way it was pink that was the first on the scoreboard (7–0). After the home crowd cheers went up

MATCH REPORT

A&C consolidated matters well and after only 5 minutes made some terrific gains in Aylesbury’s 22, and true to form Jordan Scott beat a gutsy defence to score near to the posts and allow for an easy conversion (7–7). In a yo-yo kind of way Aylesbury responded well and with a now quite strong wind on their backs they made the gains to score again only 5 minutes later securing the conversion (14–7). The scene was set to ensure parity at half-time with full-back Ben Pothecary coming into the line and crossing for an equalising try, beautifully converted by winger Tom Fawssett. Half Time: 14–14 For the 2nd half the wind didn’t get the

message to keep blowing in the same direction and began to swirl a bit randomly. Appropriately A&C kept the ball in hand and as fitness levels began to drop it was big Tom Fawssett who made a terrific line break, diving over the line for the 2nd half opener (14–19). A Tough conversion. Aylesbury could have then taken a penalty and kicked to the corner, but instead secured the 3 points (17–19) to stay close. Already though, Amersham were cranking up the pressure and it wasn’t long until the fresh legs and strength of replacement James Morrison received a pass before easing his way through the hard working Aylesbury defence to secure the decisive try (17–24)

MATCH REPORT Highlights

• Alex Bower, stepping into No9 and being man of the match – great shout and very well deserved. • Captain Jack – our very own Josh Finch returning from the bench, from a shoulder operation, and landing some top, top tackles. • Noah Jarvis returning to centre after a short lay off – some firm strappings saw him through

another fine conversion from Tom making it (17–26).

• James Morrison – super-sub executing a wonderful bonus point try.

With pride still to be earned Aylesbury deservedly roared along with their home support to eventually score a consolation try with seconds remaining. Conversion missed.

• 5 out of 5 ain’t bad!

Chiltern win (22–26). So, it wasn’t what we did, and it was the way that we did it and we did get the result. Great game all round.

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas First home game for four weeks today, and we welcome old friends Hemel Hempstead. It is many years since we have had a regular fixture against Camelot (cue Knights of the Round Table references in Andy’s match report) and it will be good to see them again. We also welcome Mr George Wallington-Smith, who has come all the way from Little Missenden to take charge of today’s game. Things couldn’t have gone much better since my last missive. The First XV have won all their games, all with a try bonus point, and are currently top of the league with thirty points from a possible thirty. Last week, we travelled to Chobham (not Cobham) in Surrey and prevailed in a game that was closer than the eventual scoreline of 12-51 suggests. The hosts were still in touch at half time, but Chiltern’s fitness and the strength of our bench meant that we ran away with it in the second half. Ollie Cato, Jack Kenyon, and Lloyd Anderson grabbed a try each and Jordan Scott got a brace, but James Lewis’s hat-trick deservedly won him the Man of the Match award. Tom Fawssett and Ben Pothecary shared the kicking points. Before that, we had thumped Old Habs 57-6, and won 22-26 at Aylesbury (nail-biting). Today should be the sternest test so far, with Hemel having won five of the six games they have played – any win will do, boys. The 2s are unbeaten this season and they too have maximum points from their five games. Last week, they beat bottom of the table Tadley II by 43-14 in a match that was stopped early by the referee; they haven’t scored fewer than 40 points in any game so far. Today, the 2s travel to play Aldermaston 1st XV in what should be a tough game, before returning to join the rest of the boys in a Bavarian Octoberfest (and watch England). Two-pint steins of Krombacher will be available. Away from the senior sides, the Colts are starting to play some good rugby in the style demanded by Charlie Swerling and Phil John (worth a watch on a Sunday). The U16s, U15s and U14s have won all their competitive matches, which Richard Clifford tells me it is only to be expected. The effort to develop a Chiltern style throughout the club may be starting to pay dividends. No review of the season so far would be complete without an acknowledgement of the fantastic Minis tournament held on Sunday 8 October. Twelve hundred kids playing this great game in fantastic weather: it was a sight to behold. Our guests had a wonderful day, and many were kind enough to say that this is their favourite festival of all on the circuit. Thanks go to Rob Elms, Dave and Jennie Cahill, Sandra Hitchman, Molly Pollard and the bar staff, and to A Little Street Kitchen, but most of all to the brilliant parent volunteers who made it all happen. Finally, the club is of course open for the Rugby World Cup semi-final at 8.00pm. You can go home in between the 1st XV game and that, or stay all day, or just pop up in the evening, but please come. Huw

Minis Squad Spotlight UNDER 9’S The start of the Autumn Minis Festival season is well underway. Starting with a trip for some age groups to Windsor, we had an amazing day on 8th October at the A&C Minis Festival with approximately 1200 mini players attending with their families to enjoy a morning of competitive rugby, some for the first time, in the glorious Indian Summer sunshine that blessed us on the day. Our festival is always followed by another great day at Festival no 3 at Beaconsfield. Once again, last Sunday, we basked in the sunshine, be it with a much chillier temperature and didn’t think our festival times could get any better. We were wrong. We weren’t expecting to win any trophies and looking forward to coming away with players medals. However, our A&C U9s picked up their first bit of silverware. At Beaconsfield’s Festival,

they chose to recognise well played rugby in a different way and have introduced the TREDS award for each age group. During the festival they ask all competing teams, which team they believe demonstrates TREDS best in the way they play the game. The A&C U9s were voted as the team in their age group who demonstrated this better than any other U9s team, making their coaches and parents super proud and so are we! Rugby’s values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship are what makes our game special for those who enjoy the environment and culture they help to create. T.R.E.D.S. has and always will be at the heart of our Club. For us, these values define the game and offer great life lessons to our young players too. Congratulations to our U9s, we look forward to seeing you play in the 1XV!

Independent PrepCENTENARY School A&C RFC Boys Aged 3-13

2024 is a significant date in the club’s history, our Centenary. The first ever match was played on Boxing Day in 1924 between a Chiltern team and a team of Berkhamsted Old Boys. The club was formed shortly after and apart from the war years (when incidentally a third of our players were killed in action) the club has always been at the heart of the local community. Nearly 50 years ago we were amongst the first clubs in the country to embrace Mini and Junior rugby and now provide sporting and social opportunities to all ages.

“Excellent”

IN ALL AREAS In spite of being one of the biggest and best value sporting organisations in the area we are entirely self supporting. We are a charity and every year spend significant sums maintaining the infrastructure of the clubhouse and grounds. As well as subscriptions we are dependent on the support of our wonderful sponsors and advertisers, without whom the club would struggle to stay afloat.

Our Centenary celebrations will run throughout the 2024/25 season. As events are firmed up we will share the details with you. A number of people have already come up with good ideas. In particular we want to use the occasion to raise significant funds to make the club as a whole, and the clubhouse in particular, more sustainable. Key events will include a Centenary dinner in October 2024, a December replay of the first club match against a Berkhamsted XV, and a match against a County XV with players chosen from all the Bucks clubs. Traditional club events such as the Minis Festival and the Presidents lunch will all continue as usual with a Centenary theme. There will be a Centenary ball at the end of the 24/25 season. A new logo will be designed for the Centenary and this will feature on a range of special Centenary playing and leisure kit.

OPEN MORNING

We are now looking for people to help make this happen. We need volunteers from all sections of the club to join the Centenary committee and to take ownership of key events. We have formed a task force with Jennie Cahill, myself and others who will convert ideas into actions over the coming months. If you would like to join us please contact Jennie, on 07894 293905 or jennie.cahill@icloud.com and we will arrange another meeting and look forward to working with you.
