Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time.

This year, following a reorganisation of the structure by the RFU, our First XV play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league. This competition contains teams from both the London and South-West Divisions, allowing us to renew some old friendships as well as to play some different teams. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here.

As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along.

If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service.

Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at

Our Second XV is completely in the SouthWest Division and plays in the snappily titled Counties 2 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon North league. This is a Level Eight league, where the team was last year, but the reorganisation means that it will be a much tougher proposition than it was. The Seconds now play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 3 South and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. One, both or neither of them may be at home today.

MATCH REPORT

Amersham and Chiltern RFC - 21 London Irish Wild Geese RFC - 22 H/T 13 -5

On

a perfect day for rugby our Game 2 with A&C looking for a consecutive win and London Irish Wild Geese looking for their first win of the season. Last week, Old Haberdashers had managed to travel to Sunbury-on-Thames and stitched together a comfortable win on the first day of the 2022/2023 season. Chiltern with some relief got the cream after a hard-fought win 31-29 against the exiles from UnbeknownCornwall.to me the ‘field of sham’ had also grown many 4 leaved shamrocks down at the clubhouse end - more of this later. With a big welcome to Ollie Brown (from Marlow), with the the sun out and plenty of Guinness on tap it was eyes down and look in ready for battle to commence.

‘Some guys have all the luck, some guys have all the pain, some guys get all the breaks, some guys do nothing but complain’

Fast tempo from Chilts after only 2 mins Noah stroked over a comfortable penalty (3-0). 10 mins in it was Noah again making an impact finding space and beautifully running through for the 1st try of the game.

Irish eyes are smiling as the wild geese swoo and grab last gasp win from plucky Chiltern

Out wide an excellent concession followed (10 - 0). Momentum maintained again some poor Irish discipline cost another 3 points (13-0). As Irish struggled for momentum they fell foul once again with a yellow card being issued. Eventually though on the 28th minute Irish made some decent gains and

scored their opening points of the afternoon (13-5). H/T

Late drama and for the second week running at Weedon Lane. Again A&C had to respond to a late, late, fightback with Irish intent on focused forward rucking. Relentlessly they made the gains, rampaging towards the Chiltern line and animated clubhouse crowd. After a sustained period camped on our line it was only a question of time before the referee raised his arm. Try awarded with Chiltern, 1 point ahead with a conversion to follow. Time-up and now matters were left as a one kick match.

Like last week Chiltern took their feet of their necks and momentum remained with Irish. On 45mins another try duly converted (1312). With a pressure A&C then conceded a penalty (13 -15). Our Hooker, Chris JOYCE then found the space to wiggle his hips through a gap to score a try and return Chiltern to the lead (18-15). Noah then should have done enough converting a wellearned penalty (21-15).

I took up position behind the posts. You can imagine how the boys were feeling after having been ahead with victory hopefully secured. The boys lined up ready for the charge of the light brigade. With calmness in the air everything seemed to be in slow motion. The kicker ran, the boys responded with a fast charge and then with a slip and stumble the kick was fluffed and drifted

of relief was addictive only then to have that rugby VAR feeling as the referee allowed a retake. Irish victory was secured with dancing and jubilation on the Fantastic22.

Whether it is a hearty pub lunch by the fire at the Kings Arms, a cosy night in a luxurious suite at the Crown Inn or a stylish celebration under the glittering chandeliers of the Kings Chapel we’d be delighted to have you!

Old Amersham Hotels are ready to welcome you to our breathtaking venues across the Chiltern Hills.

At the request of the players, I must end this week’s missive on a somewhat sterner note. Last week’s game was marred by some unfortunate comments from the crowd, directed at the referee. The team is clear that this type of thing really doesn’t help them, and they have asked me to ask you to stop antagonising the match officials. Please remember that the people giving up their Saturday afternoons so that we have a game to watch are amateurs, and our guests. It is a genuine pleasure to welcome Fraser Tod and Peter Sones, both from Bucks RFURS, to keep order in the first and second team games respectively.

TOUCHLINETHEFROM

Last week’s game against London Irish turned out to be another thriller. Where we had prevailed against London Cornish by two points in our opening match, we went down 32-31. We were never behind until the last kick, and it was a bitter pill for the boys to swallow. Andy Grant’s match report, elsewhere in this programme, will tell you more. Windsor lost their first match of the season heavily against Hammersmith and Fulham. However, the word is that they won’t be the first team to get a pasting from H&F, who have accumulated a points difference of +169 after only two games. Windsor did at least score a try against them. Last Saturday, our visitors lost very narrowly to London Cornish, with whom we were pretty much on a par. We can expect a tough test this afternoon.

Today’s would have been an away fixture but the death of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II means that Windsor RFC were unable to entertain us at Home Park. We were pleased to be able to help by reversing the fixture and Windsor’s players, officials and supporters are very welcome at Ash Grove.

The change in venue for the 1st XV’s match means that we have two games at home today. The Seconds will be playing our nearest neighbours Chesham and we look forward to seeing their players, officials, and supporters again. Our lads started the season with a defeat at Banbury, while Chesham got off to a flier against Didcot, so it will be interesting to see how this one turns out and what, if anything, it means for the season to come.
