Our Second XV is completely in the SouthWest Division and plays in the snappily titled Counties 2 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon North league. This is a Level Eight league, where the team was last year, but the reorganisation means that it will be a much tougher proposition than it was. The Seconds now play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 3 South and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. One, both or neither of them may be at home today.

President: Peter Kenyon; Chairman: Huw Thomas; Hon Sec: Ralph Hayward; Hon Treasurer: Ross Bugden; Commercial Committee Chairman: Scott Jarrold; Director of Rugby: Pete Gibson; Minis Chairman; Rob Elms; Junior Chairman: Richard Clifford

As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along.

I really hope that you have an enjoyable day with us today. If you do, and you want to come back, please pick up a fixture card from the bar. Anyone and everyone you might want to contact is listed there. If you’re really modern, the information is also on our excellent website. Thomas

Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at

If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service.

the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.

Chairmans Welcome

Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time.

This year, following a reorganisation of the structure by the RFU, our First XV play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league. This competition contains teams from both the London and South-West Divisions, allowing us to renew some old friendships as well as to play some different teams. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here.

On a perfect day for rugby our 2022/2023 season opener welcomed London Cornish RFC to Weedon Lane. On an exciting day for all we welcomed Oscar Heath (Outside Centre), Charlie Swerling (Prop) and Chris Joyce (Hooker) to their first A&C league campaign. The highlight though was the selection of young Timothy Hayes on the wing. A mere 18 years of age and A&C

MATCH REPORT

BY PAUL JOHN WELLER

With more possession and a quite a cun ning line out trick they began to put pressure on the once energetic A&C pack. Securing a hard-fought penalty, the reverie was on (21-3). Then on the 25th minute after some strong forwarded running their first try was scored and converted (21-10). On 30mins, and with some good fortune, the clubhouse end was silenced with a good Cornish try in the corner (21-15). With little between the teams, H/T was welcomed by all as they adjusted to life on the pitch once again.

and speeches. Black and yellow blazers impressive amongst the dynamite, red and white of A&C. A festival of colour with some champagne rugby in the sun to follow.

As they say; the next score was important with Noah slotting a penalty following Os car twisting his ankle (24-15). On 49 mins Cornish turned up the heat once more and after fishing around another line out managed to secure the ball before going over for another try (24-20). On a fine kicking

marauding over for the second try. Again, converted by Oscar (14-0). In the 21st min ute young debutant Tim then came of age with quite blistering pace and some hop, skips and jumps to cut through the Cornish defense for the 3rd A&C try. Again convert ed (21-0). Cornish were undoubtedly in the jam but with great credit they rallied and the tide began to turn.

Quite a start from A&C with a fast tempo and slick passing on 2 mins after a scintillat ing burst down the wing from new boy Tim. It was Oscar Heath who scored the season opener in the corner, to the joy of crowd (clubhouse end). Converted comfortably by Oscar (7-0). Chiltern maintained the early pressure and building confidence in the 8th minute it was Dave Francis picking up and

The crowd had remained and had even grown. Both sets of supporters enthralled sipped their drinks and settled for the final 10 mins. Cornish were not to buckle and in true fighting spirit made things very inter esting with the final try and conversion (3129). We all knew it would end with a single for glory and we were not disappointed. The wind picked up and despite a valiant attempt the ball dropped short and to the left. The Weedon Lane support joyous and Cornish with their heads held high. Great game and many shanties.

day, all-round, another conversion was secured (24-22). Jordan Scott was determined to spice things up and stretch Cornish fur ther and with a swivel of his hips and some high knees he found space before scoring another try to give that feeling of ‘so near yet so far’. Again, a wonderful conversion and some relief for Chiltern (31-22).

Thegame.Second

Last week we played London Cornish in our first match in a new league, Regional 2 Thames. It turned out to be a nail-biting affair. We looked to be cruising at 21-0 after twenty minutes, with tries from Oscar Heath, Dave Francis, and debutant Tim Hayes. However, our rhythm was disrupted by injury and Cornish came back strongly, so that two tries, only one converted, and a penalty goal made the score 21-15 at halftime. To be fair, Cornish continued to press for large parts of the second half and scored another two converted tries. However, we were never behind on the scoreboard and a penalty from Noah Jarvis and a converted try from Jordan Scott made the score 31-29. The last action of the game was a kick at goal by Cornish; literally a long shot, it fell short of the posts, once again showing the importance of goal kicking even in a fine game of running rugby.

by Huw Thomas

The first week of the league threw up some interesting results (Fullerians won at Belsize Park!). Irish lost at home to Old Haberdashers, but we know how tough they can be. No doubt the men in green will be keen to put matters straight today and it should be a great

XV begin their campaign today, away at Witney. Johnny Rice brings most of the experience to a young side and it will be interesting to see how they perform in what will clearly be a tougher league. If you can’t get down to Windsor to watch the 1st XV, come and give the 2s a cheer next week, when they play Chesham 1st XV here. The 3s don’t have a game but they did start the season off in fine style last Friday, with a 51-12 win over Weston.

Today we welcome the players and supporters of London Irish RFC Wild Geese. It is some years since we played them, back in the day when both teams were competing at Level 5. However, our 1st XV did have a fixture with the Wild Geese in the days before professionalism and the leagues, and London Irish are regular supporters of our Mini and Junior festivals, so they are old friends. We also welcome back referee Joel Taylor, from Buckinghamshire RFURS.

I really hope that you enjoy today’s match and I look forward to seeing you in the bar afterwards.
