Chairmans Welcome
A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time. This year, following a reorganisation of the structure by the RFU, our First XV play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league. This competition contains teams from both the London and South-West Divisions, allowing us to renew some old friendships as well as to play some different teams. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. Our Second XV is completely in the SouthWest Division and plays in the snappily titled Counties 2 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon North league. This is a Level Eight league, where the team was last year, but the reorganisation means that it will be a much tougher proposition than it was. The Seconds now play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 3 South and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. One, both or neither of them may be at home today. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome. As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along. If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. by Huw Thomas Today we welcome the players and supporters of London Cornish RFC. We haven’t played against them before, and both clubs are looking forward to making new friends. We also welcome back referee Charlie Holmes, from Buckinghamshire RFURS. This is our first match in a new league, Regional 2 Thames, which includes clubs drawn from Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Surrey, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire. The secretary from London 1 North, Andrew Smart, has taken over this league, so at least we know it will be properly administered. Andrew has said that he intends to be here this afternoon and it will be good to see him again. It’s always hard to know how a new season will pan out but I’d say that we go into this one with a fair degree of optimism. We ended last year with a good win and a better night out at Norwich, meaning that Chiltern finished eighth in the old league. We could have done better – the top sides were very complimentary about our displays against them – but it was a more than respectable outcome, our best finish for several years. We still have the core of that side and we have been able to add to it over the close season: Chris Joyce, a hooker, has come to us from Hertford; Oscar Heath is a powerful back who has moved over from Chinnor; Charlie Swerling has come back from Sidcup; and a fit and committed Ollie Cato should be as good as a new signing. Summer training has gone well, and the team seems to be gelling. We’ll see. As always happens, some people’s lives are taking them elsewhere, at least for a while. Rob Hughes has achieved a long-standing ambition and gained a commission in the Royal Marines. Bill Hughes is going to study medicine in Aberdeen. We are hoping that brother Peter’s move to London won’t prevent him coming back to play but that remains to be seen. Jacques O’Driscoll is going travelling, though I’m surprised that his chosen itinerary doesn’t include better wine-producing countries. Ollie Webb is going to university in Exeter. We wish all of them well and they know that they are always welcome here.

As far as our other teams are concerned, one good thing that has already come out of the RFU reorganisation is that the 1st and 2nd XVs will alternate their home fixtures, so there will always be rugby here on a Saturday afternoon. The 1s are at home again next week, against London Irish Amateurs, and the Seconds begin their campaign away at Witney. The following week, 17 September, the 2s play their first home match against Chesham 1st XV, who are now in the same league: much local pride at stake, so make a date in your diary for that one.
Doug Smith’s mighty 3s also start their merit table games that day, away at Finsbury Park, though by the time you read this they will have played a pre-season friendly with Weston, under lights last night. Finally, I hope you enjoyed luncheon. If you didn’t, that can only be because you didn’t have it: please consider it for next time, it really does help to make a day of it.
