Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Old Haberdashers RFC to Ash Grove for the final home game of our London One North season. We lost a close game at Croxdale Rd in mid-December, and it would be nice to restore the balance today. Better weather and firmer ground should help us, though Old Habs have never been slouches. Both teams are firmly ensconced in the middle of the table, with neither promotion hopes nor relegation worries to affect their performance, so there is no reason why it shouldn’t be a fine finale to 2021-22. Holly Wood from Bucks RFURS will be taking charge of the game and we welcome her too. The 1st XV come into this game off the back of some decent performances. Having lost to high-flying Sudbury in a match that was closer than the 22-36 score suggests, we won away at Leighton Buzzard before a much changed and very young side frightened the life out of all-but champions Shelford at their place last week. These results left the team where they have been for a couple of months, in eighth place. It looks likely that we won’t finish too far away from there and, if that’s the case, it certainly represents progress. Great credit is due to captain Josh Finch, and coaches Rich Hoskins and Mike Smith, for steadying the ship and turning it around. We now have a solid platform for Director of Rugby Pete Gibson’s ambitious plans for next season. The 2nd XV are also at home today, entertaining our old friends from Beaconsfield. It’s a big game, because if we win the 2s will finish second to perennial champions Chinnor. They put themselves in this position last week when sixteen heroes in a scratch team scraped a four-try bonus point at Banbury. No such scoring feats are required today boys – just win. Given that the team finished ninth last time, win or lose it has been a remarkable turnaround. Credit and thanks again to captain Ed Wainwright and team manager Adam Cooke. Please wander over and give the 2s a shout at some point this afternoon – it should be a great game. We welcome Bucks Ref Richard McMahon, who will no doubt be making it all run smoothly. We did hope to have a full house today, with the 3rd XV due to play Chesham. Sadly, they pulled out on Monday and we have not been able to find alternative opposition. I’m afraid that this has been an unwelcome theme this year: at one time, the side had a run of five consecutive games where the other club couldn’t raise a side. Doug Smith has done remarkably well to keep the lads’ and his own enthusiasm going and the club is very grateful for all his hard work. Next year, mate. Finally, although it’s technically not my do, I would like to bid a warm welcome to everyone attending the President’s Lunch before today’s game. I’d particularly like to thank Tony Tagent, Ross Thomson and Nick Hayes, who have put so much work into organising it. I’m sure that, as always, it will be a splendid occasion. The Players’ Dinner, which will start at 7.00 pm this evening, may not be such a civilised affair but I’m grateful to Scott Jarrold for making the arrangements. Spare a thought for (the livers of) those of us invited to both – it’s a hard life. Huw
