Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.

Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

Huw Thomas Chairman

LONDON 1 NORTH LEAGUE TABLE

FOR ALL THE LATEST FIXTURES, RESULTS & STATS VISIT: CHILTERNRUGBY.COM

LONDON 1 NORTH FIXTURES 2021-22

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Sudbury are today’s visitors for a London One North league game at Ash Grove. We went over to Suffolk in mid-November and gave what was probably our worst performance of the season, losing by a score of 36-0. Sudbury were flying high at that time and their good form has continued since; they are currently second in the table, one point behind leaders Shelford and sixteen clear of third placed Harpenden. You can see that they still have a lot to play for. Chiltern are still eighth, and the boys are striving for a top half finish, so today should provide a cracking game. We offer a warm welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of Sudbury, as we do to referee Zach Kinnaird, who has come up from Hampshire to take charge of the game. Three weeks ago, the 1st XV defied the depredations of Storm Eunice and played Eton Manor. Despite the atrocious conditions, the team played exceptionally well and achieved victory by 10-5. Jason Kilbey followed up Kieran Booth’s storming run to score the only try but in truth there were eighteen heroes on the day. Stan Griffiths, an astute judge, thought it may have been our most impressive win for a decade. Disappointingly, and infuriatingly, Mr Hyde reappeared last week when we went over to Southend and lost 31-3. It’s hard to win away but, by all accounts, it was a poor display. You can read more about it in Andy Grant’s match report, elsewhere in this programme. The 2nd XV is second in BBO1, equal on points with Banbury II but with a game in hand. Last week they put in an excellent shift to beat Witney 22-0, four tries giving them a bonus point. As ever, it was a game built on defence but, given the gale that the game was played in, the team played some great stuff with the ball in hand. Witney is always a tough game, and their coaches were highly complimentary. Marlow’s withdrawal from the league means that the2s don’t have a game today. While the 1st XV was defeating Eton Manor, the 3s were playing their first game for some time on what we must now call Pitch 2. Fullerians were duly despatched 36-12. The following week, a strong Finsbury Park IIs were brought down 27-17 (see match report), and Doug Smith began to dream of a league title. That endured until last week, when we were meant to be playing Pinner and Grammarians away; sadly, the prospect of a third game on the trot after so many happy Saturday afternoons spent shopping rendered us unable to field a team. However, Doug is keen to finish the season strongly and he assures me that this was a temporary blip. So that’s the scene for today. Unfortunately, I have been drafted in as an impartial observer of a ‘bar-room brawl’ at Twickenham, but I hope you enjoy the lunch and that the lads can pull off another win at Fortress Weedon. Huw

MATCH REPORT NO DANGER FOR 3XV RANGERS WITH FINSBURY PARK NOT QUITE UP TO THE MARK BY DOUG SMITH Title chase continues for the mighty 3XV as they see off a spirited Finsbury Park in a tight game Match Report by Luke Donnebaum Saturday brought about a certain sense of déjà vu to last weekend with Finsbury Park turning up for this rearranged fixture and declaring only 14 players. Thankfully, the way you could tell this wasn’t just a repeat of the previous week was Weedon Lane’s pitch being beautifully dry and a pleasant sunshine in a bright blue sky. With the déjà vu continuing come kick off time, the 14 had turned to 13 with a no-show. A quick decision to sacrifice two wingers to even things up gave Finsbury an opportunity to exploit this in the opening exchanges. Credit to Finsbury, they seemed to spot the times where we spread out our defence with forwards filling in the missing backs slots to keep it tight to make yards and then, when committing too many to the rucks, sending the ball out wide quickly. It was this pattern that saw Chiltern fall behind despite arguably showing more in the opening exchanges. Chiltern rallied as they did the previous week and came back at Finsbury. As Chiltern looked to attack out wide, the ball found its way to stand in skipper, Luke Donnebaum, in the back line. A questionable decision was made to attempt a kick-thru and surprisingly paid dividend with the covering Finsbury defender taking it over the dead ball line for a 5 meter scrum to Chiltern. A pick and go blind saw Luke Donnebaum draw the Finsbury flanker before offloading to Vas Chirita to shimmy his way over the line. Conversion missed. Finsbury found joy again with a similar pattern of play to before, again scoring by going out wide. Conversion missed. Chiltern managed to level things up before the end of the half with Ben Daniels coming from the bench to make a big impact on the game, crashing over to score his first of the day on his debut. Conversion missed to make the half time score a tight 10-10.

MATCH REPORT Turning around for the second half, the belief from Finsbury that they could win this game was audible and this belief was aided even further by an almost immediate score. It was again out wide but, with Finsbury’s missing players having now arrived, this breakthrough was a simple case of missed tackles on our part. With a wind behind them, Finsbury slotted the conversion from out wide to make it 10-17. Cue Ben Daniels to make his second big impact of the day. Strong running saw him pile over again having gone through several attempted tackles. Unfortunately this was again out wide and resulted in another missed conversion. 15-17. Chiltern now started playing some attractive, passing rugby. One such move demonstrating great support and offloads saw Jamie Anderson find Johnny Rice out wide on the touchline. Drawing his man, a deft pop inside found Luke Donnebaum following in support. An over the shoulder offload as the next Finsbury drift defender came across saw the ball find its way back to Jamie Anderson. Taking contact, it was Johnny Rice arriving first to pick from the deck and turn to feed the on rushing Harri Doyle who dived over in the corner for another unconverted try. 20-17. With the game still tightly balanced, Ben Daniels finally made sure to round of a superb debut with a 3rd try. This time managing to run in close to the posts for Jamie Anderson to slot the conversion and leave us a 10 point lead. 27-17. And this is how it remained. It was a great match in all. Finsbury were a good bunch and not a single incident occurred in a fiercely fought contest. It has to be said that numbers for this weekend were not looking great by Thursday this week but thankfully an influx of Chiltern youngsters due to represent Bucks under 20s the following day were permitted to contribute 40 minutes each and Jamie Anderson’s successful recruitment of 3 of his uni mates who all made very good impressions on their A&C debuts mean’t we were able to field side. With roughly 5 or 6 faces in the Finsbury line up looking familiar from those appearing in their 1st XV squad photo on their website, this injection of youth was certainly a welcome blessing to help the 3XV keep their title challenge on course. Next up is currently 3rd placed Pinner & Grammarians.

MATCH REPORT Match Report – by Andrew Grant Southend Saxons RFC (1 XV) – 31 (1XV) – 3

v

Amersham and Chiltern RFC

H/T 12 - 3 Saturday 5th March 2022 KO – 3.00 pm Venue: Warners Bridge Park, Sumpters Way, Southend –on-Sea

Saxons keep it simple as Chilts overheat in the pressure of battle. ‘I gave all I had but you still come back for more. It’s the end of the line for me and that’s for sure. Well I know that you’re proud and you love me to the bone. When It’s better for you to go you don’t stay at home. I can’t stand it, I don’t need it, I don’t want you, I can’t trust you. TAKING YOUR CHANCES, in the world outside, TAKING YOUR CHANCES, in the world outside’ – song by SAXON from the album Strong arm of the law – released 1980. It’s always daunting coming up against some Saxons on their home turf. Even when it’s firm but a tad soggy and slippy. However how things have changed since we last met a couple of months ago. Southend-on-Sea have now become the UK’s newest City and their Saxons side have climbed to 5th in the league. Previously A&C and Southend played out a hard fought match with the Saxons narrowly securing a 17 – 24 win. Chiltern had travelled with confidence following their comfortable win over Eton Manor (4th) last week. Southend though were intent on their promotion push and catching a hick-cupping Eton Manor, but

MATCH REPORT obviously wary of the recent A&C win . All was to play for with conditions dry, the lights on and a lightish wind overhead. The traditional Warners Bridge Park site was well prepared. Not a branch sat on the pitch as the final raking took pace prior to kick off. A big lunch was being hosted specially for the arrival of the Chiltern Cherubs and set within a club house so traditional it reminded me a Scottish Castle and Laird hosting the local city dwellers within the Rugby Club banqueting hall. I’m sure there were a few drams and pheasant being enjoyed as a jester entertained the Chairman and President. One thing was for sure that the membership, family and friends were there in numbers and ready to enjoy a seat in the stand, dance to the pre-match music (high tempo) or a place relaxing on the Southend sun terrace. And so the action – In summary it seemed the Saxons, with all their historical amazing Germanic efficiency, had 5 tries, scored by 5 guys with loads of possession, surging and chipping away in response. Chiltern started well with some excellent rucking, fast tempo and good distribution to both forwards and backs. Momentum was good and they were growing in confidence until a Saxon plucked a ball, shared it with his team-mates and ensured a fast flowing attack and opening try. In 10 mins A&C were on the back foot and in 20 mins they were a further converted try down after more Saxon pincer movements (12 – 0) prior to half-time and again after waves of Chiltern attacks Noah managed to secure 3pts from a well-earned penalty in front of the posts (Half-time 12 – 3). With some encouraging words from Mr Hoskins and Mr Smith it was recognised there was still a need to ‘trust the system’ and ‘chase your feet’. From chatting with some of the city locals they seemed surprised that such a gallant young side were behind when Saxons had scored tries during their only 2 times of pressure. So for the 2nd half, and the hope that we could bounce back, maintain possession and pressure to produce the points needed. We didn’t and sadly despite some noticeable performances from Peter and Robert Hughes the Saxons with cool efficiency took all chances and maintained discipline to add quality tries to what was a well-deserved but hard –earned win (31 – 3). My consolation is that whenever I play golf against someone a wee bit better than me I always play the last holes the same or better than them. We played some good stuff, but under Saxon pressure the mistakes occurred and the many opportunities were lost. Good competitive game to watch with a bit of a rubbish result.

MATCH REPORT So we returned to the banqueting hall showered and refreshed. The pheasant and mead wine had been replaced with probably one of the finest Thai chicken curry’s I’ve ever had and some Guinness. Saxons Peter and Victor and Celtic Andy supped some well-earned Guinness and we all left after a superbly hosted and competitive match. Thank you Southend we had a great couple of games and good luck for the rest of the season.

Highlights • S outhend Saxons RFC Clubhouse and ground – grass with lights, stand and club house unique in design – a pleasure to visit •M an of the match – Peter Hughes – although not fully fit he still cut through on the wing at pace • I ’m still convinced Robert Hughes scored in the first 10 mins – apparently short and held on – come on referee! • H arry West – welcomed to coach travel with the 1st team with fun, a quiz (well done Joe) and a cold energetic evening run.

Next Week We welcome 2nd place Sudbury RFC to Weedon Lane. On our trip to the land of Gainsborough a couple of months ago , league leaders at the time Sudbury, nilled us whilst amassing 36pts. Some well-worked tries and place kicking were the order of the day. We will need a large vocal crowd and the knowledge that many a fine team have visited only to feel not quite as fine afterwards. A Sudbury win would really kick us on into the spring weather and some chilled beers on the terrace. See you there!!
