Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas First things first, today we are holding our annual Sponsors Lunch, when we get a chance to say thank you to the people and the companies that do so much to make rugby happen here. We are very happy to see all of them and very grateful for their magnificent support. This afternoon, we also welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Shelford for a London One North league game at Ash Grove. For those who don’t know, Great Shelford is about four miles south of Cambridge: for both clubs, it’s a long trek but there’s usually a warm welcome and a decent game of rugby at the end of it. Shelford are having a good season, and currently lie second in the table. They drew with Sudbury last week, and we know what a good side they are, so our lads are in for a tough test. Mr Fraser Tod will be keeping order and he is very welcome too. Despite Storm Arwen, Chiltern put in a decent shift last Saturday in their game against old friends Leighton Buzzard, winning 17-3. We played into a strong, biting wind in the first half and, thanks to an excellent try by Dave Francis, we did very well to turn around with a 7-3 lead. Leighton Buzzard buckled down in the second period, defending manfully and keeping the ball. However, they were never going to score against our defence. Charlie Doyle and Peter Hughes crossed for further tries for the team in claret. On a better day, we might have scored more, but all in all it was a good showing. It’s never easy for the Twos to get a team to travel to Witney and last Saturday was no exception, so it was great reward for the sixteen men good and true who made the trip to come back with a 28-12 victory. It’s a few years since we won up there and the result puts Chiltern second in the BBO1 table. Sadly, our team has no game this week, Marlow having been forced to withdraw from the competition due to an inability to fulfil fixtures. It’s a shame, and a warning to us, to see old friends struggling, and we hope they’ll be back soon. On a brighter note, in the 3XV, Doug Smith’s assortment of old stagers and aspiring tyros beat Pinner 38-7; they too are lying second in their league. And yes, that was Gareth Dunsmore back at 9. Finally, last week I invited you to the club’s Christmas lunch on 18 December. At that point, however, my knowledge of the Greek alphabet didn’t extend to Omicron. We are still intending to have the lunch but obviously we are keeping the situation under review. Rest assured, of course, that we will only do what is safe.
