Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors.

As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here.

We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions.

Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training.

Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.

Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along.

I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

by Huw Thomas Today we are very happy to welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Leighton Buzzard to Ash Grove. We used to have regular fixtures with them in the days before the leagues, but we lost that contact when we were placed in the South-West Division and Leighton Buzzard, as a Bedfordshire club, went into the Midlands. Only the RFU could re-unite us – in London. Anyway, it is good to see them again. Mr Wayne Davis has come up from Somerset to referee the match and he is also very welcome.

Our last home game was three weeks ago, when we narrowly lost to Southend, 17-24. We started well, a catalogue of Southend errors from the kick-off leading to a try for Dave Francis and an immediate seven-point lead. However, we were unable to capitalise, and the rest of the half belonged to Southend, who led 24-10 at half time. Somehow the boys found the confidence and cohesion that had been so lacking in the first period and we dominated the game for much of the second forty. However, we only had one try, from Aidan Caldwell, to show for our efforts. Coulda, shoulda, woulda…

The week after the Southend game, we travelled up to Sudbury. They are the league leaders and a very good side, but it was disappointing to lose 36-0, particularly when we had plenty of ball to play with. Ben Harris did us a huge favour by travelling back from Nottingham to play, and injected some snap when he came on, but otherwise ‘no names, no pack drill’. Some serious words have been spoken and we expect better today, particularly as a week’s rest (and the end of the autumn internationals) has improved availability.

Ed Wainwright’s Twos continue to do well in BBO1. In my last notes, I previewed their top of the table clash with Rams/Redingensians: I am delighted to say that they won that and won again last week at Reading Abbey, so they have still won every game but one this year. Today the 2s travel to ever-competitive Witney, another tough game.

The Third XV are at home, on the second pitch. They are playing Pinner, Dave Crimp’s old club, and we are delighted that their President and committee will also be joining us for lunch: you are very welcome, gentlemen. At the time of witing, Doug Smith is involved in some serious horsetrading with Ed and will no doubt put a good side together. Mr Mark Yeomans will be keeping order, with our thanks.

Finally, a reminder about the Club Christmas Lunch on 18 December: Derek’s cooking, a Christmas jumper competition, and a game against Harpenden to watch – what more could you ask for? Book at the bar.
