Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Today we are very happy to welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Chingford RFC back to Ash Grove. They were promoted from this league only four seasons ago and although they haven’t had the best of starts this year, they are fundamentally one of the stronger clubs in London One North. Mr George Berry will be ensuring fair play in what should be a competitive game and he is very welcome too. Our last home match saw us lose to Brentwood by the odd point in twenty-five. It was a poor game, played in horrendous conditions, and scoring two tries (Doug MacGregor-Smith and Ollie Choules) to one was little consolation for the defeat. Brentwood had a solid set piece and a strong defence and adapted better to the shocking weather, but it was a disappointing performance. Last week, after a lot of confusion about travel and parking arrangements, we went up to Regents Park to play against Belsize Park. Although we seemed to be in the game at half time with the score at 10-9, injuries and illnesses took a toll and BP upped their game to win by 45-9. Defence has been our strength this season and leaking five tries in the second half hurt. We should have a full squad to pick from this week, but the boys know that they will need to do better collectively. The defeat leaves us seventh in the league table, clinging on to the top half by our fingernails. The Second XV are at home today too: we welcome Newbury for this BBO1 fixture, to be refereed by Mr Stephen Dowds. Our team have won two of their three games so far, only losing to perennial league winners Chinnor. In the other games, they beat Beaconsfield convincingly and beat Windsor by a lot (64-14!). You will see a few TBCs in their team sheet, but no doubt Captain Wainwright will have filled these by kick-off (‘twas ever thus in the 2s). There is a third game at home today. It is our Annual Vets Day and this morning two selections of gentlemen who probably ought to know better will engage in a game of Walking/Touch rugby, under laws probably known only to Charles Owen-Conway. That is to be followed by a hearty lunch and compulsory, raucous support for the 1st XV. Play nicely, chaps. Finally, I hope many of you enjoyed Friday’s Comedy Night. It’s only a few hours ago, but how many of you can remember five of the jokes?. Huw
