Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Brentwood RFC. One of the top sides in London One North, Brentwood won the competition not long ago and are always very competitive. They play a good brand of attacking rugby and we have had some great games against them over the past few years; let’s hope today is the same. Also very welcome to Ash Grove is Mr Joel Taylor of Bucks RFURS, who takes charge of today’s game. Our last home match saw us beat Colchester for the first time, in a tense and high-quality game that finished 33-28, four tries apiece. The pick of the scores was probably an astonishing effort from the Colchester right wing but ours weren’t too shabby either. Dave Francis opened the scoring and Robert Hughes crossed twice before Joe Batt finished off an excellent team try with some nifty footwork. Colchester laid siege to our line for the last five minutes, but Josh Finch’s men held out for a famous victory. One thing the boys mentioned afterwards was how much they were able to draw on the crowd’s support for that final effort – more of the same today, please. Last week we travelled to Thurrock, where we won again, by 39-33. The score makes it sound a closer game than it was, with the home side scoring a couple of tries at the very end. It’s encouraging in some ways that the boys were a little disappointed not to have won more emphatically. Lloyd Anderson, Ollie Choules (2) and Peter Hughes scored the tries, with Noah Jarvis kicking the goals and generally the pulling the strings. We go into today’s game in third place in London One North. It would be fair to say that we would have bitten your arm off if you had offered us three wins and a double bonus point loss at the beginning of September. Coaches Rich Hoskins and Mike Smith have worked hard to instil patterns and systems, but the main credit must go to the hard work of the players. Particularly pleasing is the way that a young set of forwards have grafted and improved each week: Louis Bailey, Will Drewett, Jacques O’Driscoll, Charlie Bourne, Bill Hughes and Jason Kilbey, all take a bow. Callum Newton, who makes a welcome return from injury today, has a few more games under his belt but doesn’t exactly put the average age up much. Doug McGregor-Smith has added a lot in terms of experience and ability (and the hit of the season so far). It’s early days but they have set themselves high standards; today will be a significant test. Last week saw the Second XV begin their league campaign with a win away at Beaconsfield by 29-12. Coming after a couple of good performances in friendlies, this continued a fine start by Ed Wainwright’s men. They are at home today against Chinnor, perennial champions of BBO1. I’ll close today by making another request for someone to come forward and provide managerial support to the 2s; they’re a great bunch of lads (go and see) and you really would enjoy it. Huw
