Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Colchester are our visitors today and we extend a warm welcome to their players, officials and supporters. We’ve played them a few times now in London 1 North and they have always been a little bit too good for us. However, our performance to date suggests that we are on the up this season and we should have at least a chance to reverse that trend this afternoon. Mr Simon Long comes in from Berkshire to referee the game and he is also very welcome to Ash Grove. If you were here for our last home game, you will know that we opened our campaign with a resounding 64-13 win against newly promoted Norwich. Building on a solid defence and a sound set piece, we scored ten tries: three from Lloyd Anderson, three from Rob Hughes, and one each from Conor Segre, Dave Francis, Noah Jarvis and Charlie Bourne. Norwich weren’t a bad side and it was easy to see why they had been promoted, but they struggled to play at the pace and intensity required at this level: that will come and they should get better. Unfortunately, we lost two of our mainstays during the Norwich game, Callum Newton with concussion and Kieran Booth with a badly dislocated shoulder. Callum should be back after the usual three weeks, but Kieran is likely to be out for a few months. Both had been playing so well and it is a shame to have lost them for any period. These absences, compounded by late holidays, golf trips and graduations, meant that coach Rich Hoskins had more than a few selection headaches for the trip to Harpenden last week. Eventually, he put together a side with six first team debutants (Kai Davies, Douglas MacGregor-Smith, Will Drewett, Andre Macfarlane, Mackenzie South, Jorge Gomez), and with centre Dan Kingsley making a welcome return to the side. Magnificently led by captain Lloyd Anderson and pack leader Dave Francis, the team put in a great display against a Harpenden team strengthened by several Saracens Academy players. We could have won, only a try in the very last play of the game taking Harpenden to 36-32; everyone who travelled was very proud of the boys. Off the field, today sees the first of our official pre-match luncheons. We welcome our guests, particularly those who will be remembering members and friends who passed away during the pandemic. I hope you will venture out afterwards and enjoy the game: the team, now as always, would be grateful for your encouragement, the more vocal the better. Huw p.s.
