£3 LONDON 1 NORTH SEASON 2021-22
FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas Today we welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Norwich to Ash Grove for the first game of the 2021/22 season. It’s also good to see the referee, Mr Fraser Tod from the Bucks Society, again – not least but not only because it means we’re playing again. As far as I am aware, we have never played Norwich before so I can’t tell you much about them, except that they stormed through London 2 North East the year before last, amassing 100 league points before the season was curtailed in March 2020. We’re expecting a tough game. To wrap up on our season for 2021/20, we were eventually eleventh in London One North, one place above but comfortably clear of relegation. Our season had started well but was marred by an awful run of injuries. The team dug deep to hang in until the last few games, when a fuller side was able to show its true worth. We finished with eight points more than twelfth placed Old Priorians, who went down with Woodford and Ruislip. North Walsham finished as champions, and we wish them well at Level Five. There have been several changes in the leadership of the senior playing group since last season. Dave Neale has resigned as Director of Rugby, and we wish him well for the future – he’s a club man through and through and we hope to see him back often. Rich Hoskins has taken over as Head Coach, and Mike Smith has joined Chiltern as his assistant with special responsibility for defence (and back play). Andy Grant has taken over from Yours Truly as First XV Manager. Josh Finch has replaced Ollie Cato as First XV captain and Ed Wainwright has stepped up to lead the Seconds – congratulations and good luck to both. Doug Smith remains Supreme Leader of the Thirds and Jack Kenyon continues to pull it all together as Club Captain. There has also been a fair bit of turnover player-wise. Lachlan ‘Lachy’ Collier only just got back to NZ in time to beat the Covid drawbridge: we will miss his performances on the field and in the bar, heroic in both arenas. Charlies Swerling and Perkins have moved to London clubs more convenient for where they now live, as has Ben Dugdale: good luck to them, always welcome back. On the other hand, we have recruited some quality players: Rob Hughes has (re)joined from Ampthill and Connor Segre has transferred his registration from Bracknell – look out for both today. Having graduated, Ollie Choules will seem like a new signing, and we also hope to see more of Dan Kingsley this year. One Man Wrecking Crew Dave Francis, Joe Batt and Lloyd Anderson are still with us to carry the ball. Add in the emerging talents of Louis Bailey, Kieran Booth, Charlie Bourne and Jason Kilbey and I reckon we’ll be more than alright. Let’s see……..
Chairmans Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors. As we have for the past few years, for 2021/22 our 1st XV will play in the London 1 North league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Six of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. We are also very proud to be the current Bucks County champions. Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South West Division, and play in Bucks, Berks and Oxon Division One. This Level Eight league is as high as they can go in the pyramid as a second team. The Third XV play in the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table 4 and provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Club Captain Jack Kenyon, through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
Sections, providing rugby for children from Under 6 to Under 18. We currently hold the County Cup at every age group. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Duncan Yarroll (Juniors) through the club website - or just bring your boy or girl along. Please take some time to read the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I wrote the first draft of this introduction in September 2020. A year later, you’ve no idea how pleased I am that you’re finally leaning on the fence on a Saturday afternoon, waiting for your Chiltern boys to come out and play some 15-a-side rugby. Let’s go!
