Our Dear Friend “Individuals who make a difference in our lives are often those who taught us.

I was not only fortunate to attend what was then called the Albany College of Pharmacy but also to have had Gary Hall, then just in the second year of his teaching career, as our pharmaceutics professor. Gary taught what is the foundation of pharmacy with enthusiasm, a trait I tried to employ when teaching was a part of my career. When an opportunity to work as one of his lab assistants became available, I eagerly applied. It was a rewarding three-year position, both personally and professionally, and one that became a lasting friendship.

It was a great pleasure to endow a scholarship at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in your name as a thank you, Professor Hall, for your exemplary teaching of so many future pharmacists.”

“Professor Hall was dedicated to his students and enjoyed spending time with them. When the Albany College of Pharmacy established the “Teacher of the Year” Awards Program, Professor Hall was the first recipient of that honor.

A few years after I graduated from the Albany College of Pharmacy, I was hired by the College as a laboratory instructor in the Pharmaceutics I and II courses. Gary became my mentor and my colleague. Gary offered some “guidelines” for surviving in academia. One was to never leave a faculty meeting when committee assignments were being made (these were the days before Zoom meetings and computer voting). I left a faculty meeting early one day to set up for laboratory and to my chagrin later found out I had been assigned to a dismal committee.

Gary just shook his head at me and said, ‘Have I taught you nothing?’

Gary and I share a love for pharmacy history; one of his areas of interest was

civil war pharmacy. He took me under his wing and taught me all he knew about the Throop Pharmacy Museum and its collections. We spent many happy hours working in the Museum together. We hosted booths at the NYS Museum’s Albany History Day and Saratoga’s Pioneer Day where we represented the Throop Museum and demonstrated pharmacy compounding from the 1800s.

Together we also hosted a tour of the Throop Museum for a local television station. And we offered tours and workshops on Traditional Compounding Techniques for our ACPHS students.

Gary Hall has inspired me in so many ways; I owe my long career of teaching at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to him. I wrote that Gary has held different roles throughout the years, but one role has been consistent; he has always been a good friend. I have been fortunate to have known and worked with him and I am honored by his friendship.”

“I believe Gary Hall had the greatest influence on the teaching aspect of my academic career. Professor Hall was an extremely well informed, well-prepared and articulate lecturer. I became an assistant professor at the University of Maryland when I graduated from Purdue in 1977, and my first assignment was the course Pharmaceutics I. Honestly, I pulled out my notes from the course at ACP to get started.”

I was struck by his earnest commitment to being the best possible educator both scientifically and ethically. He worked to set an example for us as a life-time learner with professional and personal integrity. Professor Hall influenced my path going forward in the most positive ways.”

Dr. Ronald B. Goodspeed ’69 “I remember Gary Hall fondly, both as a student of his, and later as a colleague until his retirement. In the pharmacy practice laboratory, Professor Hall had a friendly and professional demeanor. He fostered in his students the importance of accuracy and clarity in pharmacy calculations and compounding, a transferable attribute which I have carried with me throughout my pharmacy career.”

“I vividly recall Pharmaceutics I lab wherein I was expected to carefully transfer a low therapeutic index solution volumetrically. As I did so, Professor Hall walked behind me and my hands began to shake nervously. I thought I was in for a bit of a verbal correction. Instead, Professor Hall stopped, leaned in, watched for a moment, then said quietly, ‘You have good technique.’

That supportive style of teaching has stayed with me. I credit Professor Hall for teaching me the value of setting high expectations for our students, combined with support, to give them the most from their education.”

-Dr. David A. Putnam ’90 “Professor Hall was one of my favorite professors. In his courses, he was straightforward and fair. He made his labs fun. I remember a lab in which we made citrate of magnesia and then we got to taste it. And who can ever forget ‘oinge peel tincture.’ Besides his teaching, he was just a down to earth person who was friendly, kind, humorous and engaging with his students. He has served as an inspiration to me since I've been teaching at the College for the last 22 years. When I run into alumni who graduated 'back in the day' and they ask me what I teach, I tell them that I am a combination of Hall and Reiss. Dr. Reiss was also a terrific teacher. Kudos to Professor Hall! He has positively impacted the lives and careers of thousands of his former students. That is quite a legacy.”
