IMPOSSIBLE LULLABY Andrew Conklin
Performance notes OBOE: Multiphonic cloud • Rapidly change fingerings for indicated multiphonic, causing microtonal fluctuations in fundamental and quick movements between the notated pitches in random order • Effect is inchoate, introductory — fidgety on a local level but relatively static in a macro sense, with plenty of incidental noise BASS: Harmonic cloud – airy • Create a cloud of constantly changing partials on the given open string • Effect is inchoate, introductory — fidgety on a local level but relatively static in a macro sense, with plenty of incidental noise • Mimics and blends with oboe’s multiphonic BASS: Harmonic cloud – full • Sound is richer and more complex – like a big, breathing organism/ecosystem • Larger pitch range, which now includes the fundamental • Sound is achieved primarily by bowing open string, but try grabbing individual partials and bringing them into the larger multiphonic-like sound • Create slow undulations and transformations in color over time – explore range between tasto and ponticello bowing • Undulations are responsive to oboe melody
