What is the Community Foundation of Switzerland County?

Established in 1997, the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc., is a publicly supported charitable organization consisting of permanent, named funds established by many separate donors for the benefit of Switzerland County.

It enables people with philanthropic interests to easily and effectively support the issues they care about immediately, or through their wills.

Donors may establish a fund at the Community Foundation and the income from the fund is used to award grants to charitable programs and projects that have a positive impact on the community.

CFSCI MISSION STATEMENT What is an ‘Endowment’?

Nationally Accredited

An Endowment is a permanent fund set up by an individual or organization through a written agreement between the donor and the Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation of Switzerland County Inc. (CFSCI) is accredited with the nation’s highest standard for philanthropic excellence.

National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations ® establish legal, ethical, and effective practices for community foundations everywhere.

Gifts to the fund are invested. Investment income is used to make grants and/or scholarships. The original value of the fund is never spent, meaning it will be here forever doing good for the community.

All of the CFSCI’s more than 160 endowment funds are pooled for investment purposes but each individual fund is accounted for separately.

2024 AUDIT

The Community Foundation’s financial audit for 2024 is now available. If you would like to view a copy, you may stop in the Foundation’s office located at 303 Ferry Street in Vevay. The Community Foundation of Switzerland County is a tax-exempt public charity under IRS Code Section 501 (c) (3).

The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundation ® program requires community foundations to document their polices for donor services, investments, grant making, and administration. With over 500 community foundations accredited nationwide, the program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as to their legal and financial advisors.

Why Do People Give to the Foundation?

There are many reasons to donate to a community foundation, but a few include: It allows individuals to make their charitable donations to a local organization for the benefit of their local community.

A gift to the Foundation keeps on giving for years to come.

It provides donors with flexible giving options. The Foundation’s staff can assist a donor in determining what their charitable goals are and will make every effort to find ways to accomplish the goal.

As community needs change, the Foundation is equipped to adapt to these changes and find solutions to address them.

While we lived away from the county in adulthood, we look back fondly on our memories of Switzerland County and believe that our time there taught us how important it is to help our fellow neighbors and friends, particularly those in need. As we approached retirement and started thinking about how we could have an impact, we realized that we wanted to give back to the community that has meant so much to us. After meeting with the staff of the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, we were confident that we could accomplish our charitable goals so we established an endowment that will benefit the residents of Switzerland County for many years to come.”

Luanne Green "Our family has proudly run a small business in Switzerland County for 40 years, and we've operated a family farm even longer. The relationships that we have built from these two ventures have been very fulfilling and have united us with much of the community. As a small token of our appreciation, we established the Lowell & Luanne Green Family Community Fund at the Community Foundation. This fund gives back to the community by awarding grants to a large variety of charitable causes benefiting the residents of Switzerland County. IU President Pamela Whitten Visits CFSCI When Pamela Whitten took over as Indiana University’s President, she put forth an agenda to propel IU to new heights in student success, research and service to our great state. A part of the agenda included taking a tour of Indiana’s 92 counties.

Throughout her trip, President Whitten was able to have conversations with the citizens of Indiana about how all of IU’s campuses can improve their lives. President Whitten was able to see how IU is continuously enhancing communities in Indiana through a commitment to academic excellence, student success, transformative research, and human capital development.

President Whitten, accompanied by IU Southeast Chancellor Debbie Ford, was able to meet with Tye Sullivan and Melissa Andrew, executive director and development director, respectively, of the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc., a nonprofit organization addressing educational, economic, health care, and other major challenges facing the region, and which has awarded scholarships to numerous IU students.

2024 Grants Awarded Leadership Grants

Leadership Grants specifically cover fees for staff and volunteers to attend conferences, workshops and webinars or to bring in facilitators for board/staff retreats. Requests can be up to $1,500 per organization per calendar year.

Funding for Leadership Grants comes from CFSCI’s Community Funds. The Board of Directors of CFSCI oversees the use of these funds and determines how grants will be distributed. 2024 Grants Awarded Designated Grants

Designated Funds are created by donors who wish to support one or more specific charitable organization(s). This provides the organization(s) with a permanent source of reliable funding. $136,975 was awarded from designated funds in 2024.

Donor Advised Grants Donor Advised Funds are established by individuals who wish to actively participate in the grant making process. Donors recommend to the Foundation’s Board of Directors charitable projects or organizations that they want to support. In 2024, $10,375 was awarded from donor advised funds.

Field of Interest Grants Field of Interest Funds enable a donor to support an area of interest, such as the arts, environment, children or health. The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors then make grants from the funds to advance work being done in that particular field. Grants totaling $11,388 were awarded from Field of Interest Funds in 2024.

Imagination Library The Community Foundation of Switzerland County Inc. encourages anyone with children between the ages of 0-5 that reside in Switzerland County to register their children for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

The Imagination Library mails a new, age-appropriate book to enrolled children every month from birth until five years of age, creating a home library of up to 60 books and instilling a love of books and reading from an early age. The Imagination Library promotes early childhood education and fosters parent-child interaction – both of which are fundamental to future educational success.

The program launched in Switzerland County in 2006 and since that time, over 60,000 books have been mailed to Switzerland County children. The program is administered locally by the Community Foundation and funding for the program is made possible by the Community Foundation and the VevaySwitzerland County Foundation.

Women’s Giving Circle of Switzerland County The Women’s Giving Circle of Switzerland County is a group of women working together to address the philanthropic needs of Switzerland County.

The idea behind the Giving Circle is that the women can have a larger impact on Switzerland County by pooling their resources together than they can on their own. The Giving Circle was started in 2009 and anyone is welcome to join.

Some components of the Giving Circle are: All money donated will go towards programs and projects that benefit Switzerland County and its residents.

Money donated will be placed in a fund at the CFSCI. Since CFSCI is a nonprofit organization, gifts to the fund will be fully taxdeductible.

Members are required to contribute money towards the Giving Circle Fund. However, there is no minimum requirement and members are encouraged to give at the level they are comfortable.

Only the CFSCI staff will know how much each member contributes.

Members can participate as little or as much as they would like.

The Giving Circle meets quarterly. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the second month ( February, May, August, and November) of each quarter.

2024 Scholarships The Sgt. Kenneth Raymond Booker Memorial Scholarship

Kyatalin Baker, 2024 recipient of the Sgt. Kenneth Raymond Booker Memorial Scholarship.

Mr. Charles Booker, along with family and friends, established this scholarship in memory of Sgt. Kenneth Raymond Booker. Sgt. Booker joined the U.S. Army shortly after graduating from high school.

His distinguished service earned him many awards and he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country in 2001 when an enemy improvised explosive device blew up the Stryker tank he commanded. This scholarship honors Sgt. Booker’s love of FFA and Switzerland County by assisting Switzerland County High School graduating seniors that wish to continue their education in a field linked to agriculture.

2024-2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar In December 2024, the Community Foundation of Switzerland County Inc. announced that Claire Rogers had been awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year. Claire is the daughter of Josh and Renee Rogers f rom Pleasant. Ironically, Renee was the f irst Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient in Switzerland County when the program began in 1998.

Claire not only excelled in her academics but also engaged in a variety of activities. She held the position of class President, participated in soccer and basketball, and was actively involved in FFA. Additionally, she had also completed several community service projects.

Claire plans to attend Butler University in the fall to major in Kinesiology & Pre-Physical Therapy.

LILLY

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years.

It does not cover room and board and other optional expenses. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities.

GIFT VIII Match

The Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc. (CFSCI) has received a matching fund grant totaling $100,000 as part of the eighth phase of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s initiative, Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VIII).

The purpose of the grant is to assist CFSCI with unrestricted endowment building.

CFSCI will offer matching funds to those individuals, businesses and organizations wanting to establish or donate to an unrestricted endowment. Unrestricted endowments help meet the changing needs of Switzerland County, now and in the future.

Grants from these funds broadly support the well-being and vitality of Switzerland County and its residents. Through the match, Lilly Endowment Inc. will provide $2 for every $1 contributed to a CFSCI unrestricted endowment from now through December 31, 2025 or until the matching funds have been expended. As an example, a gift of $100 will be matched with $200 and become a $300 gift.

For those individuals, businesses or organizations interested in exploring the idea of establishing their own named unrestricted endowment, now is the perfect time to consider doing so. The $2 for $1 match is a great matching opportunity and enables someone passionate about helping Switzerland County the option of being able to have a permanent impact.

GIFT VIII Awarded to CFSCI Live Well Switzerland County

The Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc. (CFSCI) announced in December that they were a recipient of a Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) VIII Community Leadership Implementation Grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. This $467,327 grant was one of 30 that were awarded in Indiana. Tye Sullivan, Executive Director of CFSCI stated, “The Community Foundation is extremely grateful to Lilly Endowment for this opportunity and for their ongoing support of Switzerland County. At the local level, we had so many individuals and organizations that provided their input and expertise throughout this process, as well as guide us along the way. Their assistance is what made this grant a reality so we would like to extend a big thank you to everyone that played a role.”

A major complicating factor affecting access to health-related services in Switzerland County is that almost all services are located in Vevay on the county's far south border. While it is not unusual for a rural county seat to be the focus of most services, the topography of Switzerland County (223 sq. miles) severely limits access by impoverished, elderly and handicapped individuals living in remote parts of the county. Patriot, the only other incorporated town in Switzerland County, is approximately 30 minutes from Vevay. Decades of experience show that even when valuable services can be provided in Vevay, significant numbers of rural residents do not make use of them due to transportation or cost factors.

For CFSCI’s GIFT VIII Community Leadership Implementation Grant proposal, it was important that the focus be on increasing health services for underserved residents.

CFSCI will collaborate with multiple public and nonprofit organizations to bring select health-related services closer to residents in greatest need, especially those who currently cannot drive to Vevay or beyond for essential health services. Live Well Switzerland County, a three-year pilot program, aims to improve the overall health and well-being of Switzerland County residents. Continued on next page.

GIFT VIII Awarded to CFSCI

While Live Well Switzerland County consists of several different programs and projects, CFSCI only requested grant funds from the GIFT VIII program for the lead project, which was the purchase of a mobile health clinic and a portion of the costs for operating one. At a total cost of $467,327, the GIFT VIII grant will cover these costs for three years, which will give the mobile health clinic the opportunity to become self-sustaining.

Switzerland County’s mobile health clinic will provide a wide range of primary care services to all ages in the county including basic health assessments such as annual physicals, well-child visits, preventative screenings and checkups to monitor overall health. The mobile health clinic will also provide flu, pneumonia and other immunizations, as well as chronic disease management, health education and treatment for minor injuries and illnesses. Point-of-care testing (POCT) will be provided for strep, flu, COVID, pregnancy and urine drug screens, and labs can be drawn to be sent out for testing. Referrals will be made for services such as medical specialties, mental health, substance abuse and medical imaging. Switzerland County residents will receive the same careful attention inside of a mobile health clinic as they would in a more traditional general practice or outpatient setting. Mobile health clinic vehicles operate as rolling medical offices and to date, there are only about a dozen such vehicles in Indiana. The mobile health clinic will have regularly scheduled hours at various geographic locations throughout the county.
