PUBLISHER | EDITOR IN CHIEF Alice Sexton

August and September flew by with Maxine and I taking only one short

trip up to Washington DC for my longest time, best friend’s big 60th birthday. Being we-don’t-want-to-grow-up punk rockers, I got us tickets to see L-7 at the 9:30 Club, one of my nightly hangouts when I lived in DC in the ‘80s. Driving into the city I made a wrong turn (maybekindasortaonpurpose) and ended up in my old neighborhood where the row house I bought in 1987 for $80K is now worth 10 times that much. Wow! If I’d kept that house I’d be a near millionaire by now! Oh well. The show was great and I know we weren’t the oldest folks there either. But you know you’re getting up there when the doorman searches your knapsack and all he finds is a stash of doggy poop bags! Anyway- the grungy neighborhood I loved has become super-gentrified with fancy places to eat and high-dollar condos, so I’m happy to be living in the mountains for now. On this exact day last year- September 19th- I broke my gosh-darn #@*%!! ankle. Hard to believe a year has gone by since then- and even more unbelievable that I still got the magazine off to the printer! Sure makes getting this issue done seem easy as pie- apple pie! Yes it’s apple time again here in our little corner of the mountains. Fall is upon us and the festival season is in

Charlie’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria has a tradition of homemade family cooking serving up the best Italian cuisine in north Georgia. With 47 years of experience, owners Charlie and Collette Perrone are very dedicated to providing high quality, fresh ingredients in each dish. Everything from their signature family recipes– such as Chicken Parmigianina, Seared Sea Salmon and Char-broiled Lamb Chops– to their salads and sandwiches are made fresh and to order. Their house Marinara sauce is an old family recipe from the town of Bari, Italy where Charlie was born and is a light, yet chunky vegetarian sauce, so fresh and natural that you can taste each and every flavor. Offering an extensive, yet hand-selected menu, you’ll find homemade lunch and dinner recipes to please every palate and budget. And the hot and crusty bread is to die for! Another favorite among their loyal clientele is Charlie’s all vegetarian Minestrone soup. No MSG and no chicken stock make this one of the best items on the menu for those who are health conscious. Don’t see exactly what you want on the menu? Just ask and they will make every effort to accommodate your request. Have dietary restrictions? Let your server know– no salt, no butter, no gluten! No problem! Charlie’s owes its success to always listening to their patrons and changing with their customer’s needs. They offer affordable, delicious lunch specials, a weekly family dinner take-out menu, and some of the best pizza you’ll find! Charlie’s has a full bar with and an Espresso Martini or an Italian Apple Martini being favorites. You simply must leave room for their homemade desserts- the Toasted Strawberry Shortcake surely is a house favorite. Open 6 days a week, Charlie’s is local all the way and very dedicated to the surrounding community and businesses. With advance notice they provide small or large orders to go for lunch or dinner. A private banquet room that seats 30 is available for corporate meals or rehearsal dinners. Charlie and Collette would like to thank everyone for their continued support and for making Charlie’s Italian Restaurant the success it is today. BUON CIBO, BUON VINO, BUONI AMICI! AC LIVING ADVENTURE

Leave No Trace, Not Working Outdoor Adventure Editor Greg Dunn on Improving the Lake Blue Ridge “Passive Recreation” Day Use Area

L

Living in Blue Ridge for seven years, my wife and I have had ample time to explore most every trail and recreation area within a 50-mile radius of downtown. As a mountain biker, the Aska Trail system is probably one of my favorite systems due to its varied terrain and the fact that the main trailhead, Deep Gap, is just only about 10 minutes from town. My wife and I share a common love for the woods and get out as much as we can, but with our new addition, 17 month old Finn, we find ourselves seeking areas with more “stroller” friendly terrain. Welcome to Lake Blue Ridge Day Use Area. Designated a “passive recreation area” by the U.S. Forest Service, the area boasts beautiful lake views, a free boat ramp, a 1 mile paved walking path, and short singletrack hike that takes you along the shoreline. Carrie, Finn, and I live just north of downtown, so on the weekends I ride my mountain bike from the house (to get in a few extra miles that have been lacking lately) and meet them there. The paved trail is perfect for Carrie’s jogging stroller and I can spin right along side. If we have extra time I can continue out Dry Branch to Aska Road, where I can link up with the Aska trail system. Just below the parking lot is a meadow, and a beach-like shoreline that is perfect for cooling off after a hike or ride. This past Sunday was one of those late summer mornings that give you that slight feeling that fall is approaching so we decided to head out to dry branch to take advantage of the

weather before it got too hot. I rode as usual to meet them there and as I pulled up to where they were parked, I noticed a large black trash bag that had recently been torn into by critters. Apparently these poor folks just couldn’t spare the extra dollar that it would take to properly dump their garbage and thought the parking lot was a perfect spot. I get so sick of seeing this, a perfect example of total disregard for others and obvious disrespect for the environment, not to mention pure laziness. So instead of letting it piss me off even further I decided to put my money where my mouth is and do something. As I mentioned earlier, this recreation area is considered by the forest service to be a “passive recreation area” basically meaning that they are not going to spend money to maintain it. Looking around the parking lot makes this painfully obvious with waist high weeds, trash and debris everywhere. A large fallen Oak tree on the backside of the paved loop has been there now for over a month. I would have already taken my chainsaw in to cut it, but legally I can’t because I

haven’t paid money and spent an entire weekend to get my “chainsaw certification.” And I run a chainsaw for a living! Despite the obvious neglect, Lake Blue Ridge Day Use Area is being used quite a bit. We saw at least 10 vehicles come and go, people hiking with kids and joggers running with their dogs. If you haven’t ever been to this area you should check it out. If you like the area as much as I do then maybe think about volunteering some time to pick up a little trash or even let the Forest Service or the Lake Blue Ridge Civic Association know that you would like to help. AC LIVING LANDSCAPE & GARDEN

Eastern Tent Caterpillars Landscape & Garden Editor Kevin Johnson Says Fall and Winter are the Best Times to Gain Control of This Pest

T

The past few months we’ve been seeing quite an outbreak of Web Worms throughout the area, and we’ll cover those later, but for now we’re going to get a jump on spring and talk about the Eastern Tent Caterpillar. I’ve heard them called bag worms– not true– they are Eastern Tent Caterpillars. The goal of this article is to become more familiar with the life cycle of these leafeating machines and how to take control now in preparation for spring. Identification: The Eastern Tent Caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum, is a pest native to North America and is the larvae of a moth, which is rarely seen. In the larvae stage they are defoliators of deciduous trees. The caterpillars will grow in length from 2-2 1/2 inches at maturity. They are black and hairy with a white stripe down their back with a brown or yellow strip down their sides, along with some oval blue spots. They are typically found on both wild and ornamental cherry trees as well as on apple and crabapples, however they also nest in other fruit and hardwood trees at times. Life Cycle: Eastern Tent Caterpillar overwinters as an egg. The egg mass consists of 150-400 eggs and is covered with a black shiny material. Egg masses can be found on tree branches about the width of a pencil in diameter or less. They then typically hatch in March as larvae, which again is the caterpillar stage. That’s when they begin to build their silky tent in the crotch of trees (web worms build their tents at the ends of branches). The caterpillars emerge from the protection of their tents to feed in the morning and at night, this is when leaf damage is done. Four to six weeks later, caterpillars leave the nest individually and find a place to spin a cocoon. It’s important to note that they are not feeding or causing damage at this point. They’re searching for a safe place to begin the next phase of their life cycle. Roughly three weeks from spinning their cocoons, the moth emerges. These moths are strictly nocturnal. They mate, the female lays eggs on the small branches and the process repeats itself. There is only one generation per year. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016

Clockwise from Top Left: ETC egg mass, about 1/2” long can be found, through fall and winter, on tree branches about the width of a pencil in diameter or less. When the eggs hatch, tents are formed in the crotch of tree branches. Larvae (caterpillars) emerge in March and are about 50mm long. Photo Jim McCormac. Caterpillars spin a cocoon and no longer feed Adult moth has 3-4mm wing span and are striclty nocturnal with a life-span of about 5 days. Photo Jim McCormac. Control and Management: Prevention and early control is important. The best method of control is removing the egg masses from your fruit and ornamental trees. This is done once trees are devoid of leaves in the fall or winter and will reduce the caterpillar population before they hatch. You can just scrape the egg masses off with your fingernail. In the early spring, pruning out the tent is another option if you can reach it.

APPALACHIAN COUNTRY LIVING

Natural predators such as birds, parasitic wasps and disease also help control their population. Water based insecticides generally wont penetrate their nests, and really aren’t a good idea unless you get them early. The Good News: Like many things in nature, Eastern Tent Caterpillar populations fluctuate from year to year. This year we had a significant outbreak. Let’s see what next year brings. Oh, and your trees that have been defoliated– it’s unlikely they will die– they will usually recover and put out a new crop of leaves. Let’s just learn to live with the problem because there’s nothing we can really do anyway. ACLM Kevin Johnson is the owner of Green Leaf Lawn and Ornamental, LLC, based in Blue Ridge. AC LIVING STYLE & DESIGN

Framing A Mountain View Style & Design Editor Cindy Trimble Talks About Special Window Treatments for Mountain Homes

W

Windows in mountain homes provide views of the breathtaking mountain environments we enjoy so much. So why do we need window treatments? During the daytime, mountain home windows are framed pieces of living artwork of spectacular views. But once the sun goes down, the windows becomes cold, black holes on the warm interior walls, creating an uncomfortable feeling. Even though the windows are usually facing directions where privacy is not an issue, your comfort at all times of the day is important. Window coverings provide warmth to interior spaces, provide continuity to exterior facades and of course privacy and security when needed. Plus, they can provide sun screening and UV protection to interior surfaces and materials from harsh sunlight. Depending on your needs, your budget and your design style, there are many types of window coverings available that are complimentary to all styles of mountain homes including: horizontal wood blinds, natural woven wood blinds, pleated fabric & roller shades, and custom made fabric treatments such as drape panels and valences. In recent years the natural woven wood blinds, pleated and roller shades have become very popular. They come in many colors and textures and have a lot of great features plus some great price points. When shades are used for security purposes only, homeowners desire the blinds to disappear as much as possible when not in use. Pleated and Roller shades have the least amount of exposure when they are retracted, leaving the window open because they gather tight against the top of the window frame. Natural woven blinds and horizontal wood blinds have valences that hang down 5 to 6 inches (needed to hide the mechanism) so they are part of the room dĂŠcor whether open or closed. Many blind styles offer the top down bottom up feature so that the OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016

blinds can be lowered from the top so they still provide privacy on the bottom, but there is an open viewing area on the top of the window. provides warmth both visually and physically and can help with acoustical issues. Many times we combine fabric with blinds creating a design statement, but providing functional window coverings. ROAD TO RETIREMENT– A NEW JOURNEY BEGINS Primatologists and professionals from all over the country left their current roles and signed on to work for Project Chimps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is making unprecedented advances for captive chimpanzees. Through relationship-building, collaboration, and tenacity, Project Chimps was able to come to an agreement with the University of Louisiana’s New Iberia Research Center. They agreed to let Project Chimps have all of their remaining chimpanzees and provide them with lifetime sanctuary care. This decision is unprecedented and shows what positive collaboration can do for the betterment of others, in thiscase: chimpanzees. WORDS & PHOTOS: PROJECT CHIMPS 14

Project Chimps, a new 236-acre sanctuary for chimpanzees coming out of research, just welcomed their first nine residents this September. Emma, Gertrude, identical twin sisters Charisse & Buttercup, Gracie, Latricia, Samira, Jennifer, and Genesis made the 16-hour Road to Retirement trip from the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) in Lafayette, Louisiana to their new sanctuary home in Morganton, Georgia. While this was a momentous occasion for the nonprofit organization, it is also just the beginning. Over 200 chimps will make the Road to Retirement journey to sanctuary over the next few years. The girls, as they are affectionately referred to, range from 10 to 13 years

of age. They were in an established family group while at NIRC, but were separated in preparation for the trip to their new sanctuary home. Upon their arrival and after each chimpanzee was unloaded from the transport trailer and individually transferred into the Cedar Tree Villa (one of four housing buildings on the property), they greeted each other as old friends would: lots of hugging and kissing. It was certainly an emotional event to witness. The day ended with several of Left and Below: Photogenic Gracie! The peaceful look on their faces appeared as if they already knew they were home. One of the exciting parts about life at a sanctuary is that the chimpanzee residents get to make choices about who they want to spend time with, where they spend their time, and what to play with. They are even being introduced to new foods and fun ways to eat them. One of the organization’s founding donors, television personality and animal advocate, Rachael Ray, completely redesigned and remodeled the Chimp Kitchen at the sanctuary. Mercier Orchards - if you have ever traveled to north Georgia for a day trip or mountain vacation, chances are the name rings a bell. Opened in 1943 by Bill & Adele Mercier, this family-owned landmark located in Fannin County has been providing folks in the Southeast with fresh fruits and homemade goods for more than 70 years. Famous for their bakery, deli, country store and Farm Winery, Mercier Orchards is one of those places that you must visit when you come to Blue Ridge, Georgia. This is especially true if you have a sweet tooth! One of the most sought-after treats to enjoy at Mercier’s is their wide variety of pies: in fact, it’s common for the bakery to make more than one million whole pies per year, not counting their selection of fried pies, which do even bigger numbers than their larger counterparts. While visitors certainly like to indulge in all of the decadent goodies inside their countrystyle store, the central and perhaps most popular attraction at Mercier Orchards are the U-Pick tours that they offer on a seasonal basis. Mercier has many different kinds of fruits to gather, including Strawberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, Peaches, and Apples, with the latter being the most popular U-Pick experience. During a U-Pick tour, guests have the opportunity to hitch a ride on one of the many tractors that make rounds throughout OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016

the orchard. Operated by knowledgeable tour guides who explain the history of the 300-acre orchard, answer questions and provide tips on U-Picking, these tractors are the guest’s transportation to the desired fruit picking destination of their choice. Once guests are dropped off, they are allowed to collect fruit until their baskets are full, and their hearts are content. Visitors often use the fruit that they collect for use in jams, jellies, and various baked goods. When finished, patrons hop back on the tractor to return to the store for a quick bite to eat at the deli. To make sure day-to-day operations to run OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016

smoothly, Mercier Orchards hires a small army of employees, which often doubles during busy months. Each team member has a crucial role in maintaining the high quality of service that the orchard is know for; this includes bakers and sales clerks working in the store, to tour guides and those working on the farm, which yields roughly 75,000 bushels per year. Mercier Orchards has plenty of fun things to do and see year-round, but it is the fall season that garners the most attention. It’s not unheard of in October to see between 50 and 60 buses full of eager fruit pickers on any given day during the months of September and October. This is when Apple season is in full swing, and the air outside is as crisp as the fruit growing on the trees around the orchard, which number around 600 per acre. With 40-50 different varieties of Apples to choose from, it’s no wonder that folks flock from hundreds of miles away with the specific intention of coming to Mercier Orchards for the day. U-Pick tours are not only fun and rewarding but educational as well - a big plus for families with younger children, who may not know how much work goes into maintaining an orchard. Whether you want to participate in one of Mercier’s many U-Pick tours, pick up a batch of fried pies, enjoy a hard cider tasting, or simply take an afternoon drive to visit one of

When visiting the Blue Ridge area, most will agree the ideal place to stay is in a cabin. For over 13 years, Mountain Top Cabin Rentals has been a premiere luxury cabin rental provider. Mountain Top Cabin Rentals also offers several properties in the heart of Downtown Blue Ridge for those wishing to be in the middle of the charming historic downtown itself. Mountain Top lists about 60 luxury hand selected cabins for rent. Some cabins are even close to each other, for large groups looking to stay together within walking distance. They offer water frontage cabins, Mountain View cabins and wooded setting cabins. Some cabins are pet friendly, for those wishing to bring their furry family members along. Owners Mark Burger and Tabetha Whitaker have been operating Mountain Top Cabin Rentals since the company opened in 2003. “We started with only three cabins in a tiny office and we have grown steadily every year into the company we are today. We have a great team, all of us work hard and support each other. Hospitality, customer service, and Blue Ridge tourism have always been our team’s passion. We strive to offer the best possible rentals and service. Our priority is that each guest has a wonderful Blue Ridge experience,” says Whitaker. While reading reviews and articles across the web and magazines, it’s easy to note that top rated customer service is just one of the many things that keep customers coming back. As of 2016, Trip Advisor has recognized Mountain Top Cabin Rentals with the “Certificate of Excellence” award for several years running. The cabins are all located in Fannin County, generally being a 15 – 20 minute drive from Downtown Blue Ridge. They range from one bedroom to five bedroom, and are all somewhat selected to be on the 24

program. Whitaker says they limit the number of properties they manage to maintain the quality of their inventory and uniqueness of each rental. She says they are more concerned with quality versus quantity and want all properties to reflect their brand image. Shelly Wehunt, a long time property manager is one of those responsible for the care of these gorgeous luxury cabins and downtown Blue Ridge rentals. “We always do our best to make sure everything is pristine and working correctly. We always want our properties to be in excellent condition, so our guests have a great experience with us and they come back,” says Wehunt. Delita Taylor, one of the reservation agents in the MTCR office has been working at MTCR for several years and says she loves helping customers find their perfect cabin and suggesting area activities they will enjoy with their families or as couples. “It’s always fun to work with new customers that have never visited Blue Ridge before, sometimes they have no idea what the area has to offer. Especially when they’re just coming from Atlanta or Chattanooga, so it’s just under a two hour drive to Blue Ridge. They always tell me they can’t believe Blue Ridge is so close, but feels like a total escape from the stress of the city and work.” She also has many returning guests she considers friends, as she knows them on a first name basis. Other agents insist Taylor is a customer favorite for her way with guests and veteran customer service skills. Taylor is just one of several agents (all Blue Ridge natives they proudly declare) in the Mountain Top Cabin Rentals office. Each agent is ready to assist you in making a reservation or suggesting local hiking trails to waterfalls, the best restaurant for steaks or a local favorite for breakfast. All of the office team are friendly, professional, and seem to

There is something significant yet familiar about autumn. The air is sharp and clear. Leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow and float to the ground. Despite the inevitable winter, we toast the harvest with a hardy cheer for the abundance of our favorite fall fruit– the apple. Cozy days with the smell of apple pie in the oven, a mug of hot apple cider, and the first bite into a crisp red apple freshly picked from the orchard are all fondly remembered and enjoyed once again. Apple Time in the mountains is a glorious celebration of our area’s history, culture and heritage. We hope you all enjoy these recipes from the Gilmer Chamber of Commerce.

Place apple slices along 1 long edge of dough, about 1/4 inch beyond edge of dough, overlapping slices slightly. Fold bottom half of dough over the apple slices to form a long “folder” of dough with rounded edges of apple slices exposed. Beat egg and water together in a bowl. Paint surface of dough with egg wash. Sprinkle with more spice-sugar, to taste. Starting from one end, roll dough not too tightly to form a rose-shaped pastry. Seal roll with end of dough strip. Transfer roses to pan. Sprinkle with a little more spice-sugar. Place directly on middle rack of preheated oven. Bake until well browned, about 35 minutes. Remove from oven, cool 5 to 10 minutes. Cut with a floured 2-1/2” apple cookie cutter. Place 2” apart on ungreased baking sheets. Spread with 2 teaspoons of filling to within 1/4” of edge. Top with another cutout seal edges. Bake at 375° for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons water and 18 drops red food coloring. In another small bowl, combine remaining water and 6 drops green food coloring. Using a pastry brush, “paint” apples red with green leaves. For amore simple look, you can leave off the coloring and sprinkle with cinnamon.

– Georgia Frontier

History Editor Leslie Barker Thomas Digs Deep Into The Rich and Exciting Cultural Past with This Ongoing Series About Our Native Ancestors

America’s Wild Frontier

T

Today, the old west to most of us means the southwestern states where cowboys roamed the range. In Georgia the “frontier” was a demarcation between the civilized settlements of the east, and the land considered wilderness beyond that. These lands were uncharted, in most cases, never having known the plow or the ax. Dotted with quickly built shacks to protect adventurers from the elements; these shacks became the first western communities. The original stories told of the old western frontier began in Georgia and other southeastern states. Unfortunately this history was left to be written by politicians rather than adventurous storywriters. Theodore Roosevelt wrote in his book The Winning of the West, that Georgia is one of the “weakest and most lawless of the original thirteen states.” Amid the volumes of legal claims and criminal records lie the stories gleaned from these lackluster descriptions with few details. We can only surmise what transpired in the hastily documented events. Those adventurers with the desire to sustain each other in the belief that someday “this” place will become a civilized town or city, formed the first frontier settlements. However, word of mouth spread quickly to those who felt cooped up in the citified realms. The promise of rich lands (in more ways than one) further south and west was enough for these restless nomads to move out along well-trodden migratory paths often referred to a “pig-trails.” Lawlessness was prevalent and in most cases rampant. The Georgia Commissioners at the treaty of Colerain in Camden County Georgia (1796) complained of a loss of 825 horses, 1159 cattle, 495 hog and 115 houses burned. They 46

Horse and cattle theft was considered a higher crime than homicide. blamed the Indians, who indeed felt a great need for horses; however, they were blamed for much of the stealing when in fact it was the outlaw whites doing the majority of it. Homicide on the frontier was considered more of a misdemeanor offense compared to horse stealing. The thief was considered a negative value as compared to the horse being a necessity and having a pertinent positive value. Justice did not pursue the murderer as often as it did the thief. Once a settlement became permanent and developed commerce, the settlers began to demand protection for their investments. Laws would be written and someone, usually a sheriff, would be first appointed, and then elected to make everyone adhere to these laws. As long as the local citizenry was at peace, little care was given as to where the culprits went as long as it wasn’t in their settlement. Miners for the most part were a rowdy bunch of ruffians and as a rule, considered to be greedy. Their life was one of monotonous pursuit of the next big bonanza of “color.” Their feeling was that the land, regardless of whose ownership, was theirs to investigate and explore to success of a find. The legality of the find was inconsequential to them. It belonged to them regardless of who owned the property; they dug it, and found it, and they fought to keep it. On the frontier, the lands of Georgia had been surveyed and allotted; the miner may have owned that land, at least on paper. It may have been labeled as a gold lot but whether or not there was any mineral content on the land was often debatable. ACLM
