WELCOME TO AC LIVING MAGAZINE

W

While the world seems to be going to hell in a handbasket our little mountain towns are once again blooming into summer. Trees have leafed out, gardens are sown and growing, and summer residents are returning. One of my favorite things this time of year is the arrival of the young folks who staff the seasonal businesses. Raft guides, zip line operators, shuttle bus drivers, and summer wait staff come floating in on a fresh, new breeze. With shaggy hair, tattoos, flip flops, raggedy fun clothes, piercings, love beads (if that’s what they’re still called)– these young adults, and their happy dogs– remind Look Mom! I’ve been doing my job us that humanity, art, love, science, intelligence, and kindness continues to out in the field! I don’t think I can blossom outside of our tiny community be more dirty or more happy than at this very moment! snow globe. Heck- I practically yell out loud, “Yay! The hip young people are here, let the summer begin!” And so here we go, Summer 2022. Many have asked about Maxine. She goes to an oncologist specialist in Knoxville next week to get a second opinion and treatment (?) options. At least 13yrs old, she’s had a pretty good run, made friends everywhere she goes, dug lots of holes, pranced in parades, and killed a fair amount of varmints. However, prednisone has turned her into a chunky, wire-haired Piranha on four furry legs. Her appetite is so voracious she nearly took off my finger the other day jumping for a biscuit. I’ve had to stop letting kids (and non-dog people) give her treats. But that’s OK. With summer on its way, there’s no time like now to upgrade your outdoor living spaces, and Porch Life 365 Custom Enclosures is the answer. Turn your existing deck/porch into a 3-season oasis, build a new a screened-in porch or upgrade your existing screens to Better Vue, Solar or 2/20 No-See-Um. But that’s not all, Porch Life 365 offers many other services, so go check out their Ellijay show room, and welcome to the ‘Life is Always Better on the Porch’ life style. What better way to get in touch with nature than going on a Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) hike? There are hikes for all levels of experience, group or solo, dog friendly hikes– and if you’re so inclined– trail maintenance days. Visit the BMTA website for info dates, and some very cool volunteer opportunities. Around Back at Rocky’s Place is THE folk art go-to destination. Celebrating 20 years, Rocky’s Place is still one of north Georgia’s largest folk art galleries, boasting thousands of unique pieces and the largest collection of artwork by Cornbread in the universe! Open by appointment only, be sure put Rocky’s Place on the top of your list. We have a few somewhat healthy, adulting Fourth of July Red, White, and Blue recipes. Plus, our extensive Calendar featuring- well- almost everything. The upcoming August/September issue will feature our Fall Festivals and Fairs listings, and I know you don’t want to miss any of that fabulous information! Maxine and I wish you Motther Nature’s healing, a quiet walk in the woods or a relaxing float down the river. And as always, just do the right thing. Sorry- not sorry Mom. It went down a muddy hole and then I had to eat it! 4

Go Take a Hike! I

t’s no secret that there are gorgeous, scenic views around almost any bend in the north Georgia Mountains. Amazing vistas, towering and flowering trees, mountain-fed streams, cascading waterfalls and lovely wildflowers await those who choose to get out and experience nature’s wonder. Each season the Benton MacKaye Trail offers its own unique opportunity for hikers to enjoy the diverse scenery of the mountains. In winter there are many mild hiking days, and with the leaves gone from the trees, one can enjoy the wide-sweeping panoramas and spectacular longrange views. Spring and early summer are peak times to see an abundance of colorful wildflowers, rhododendrons and flowering trees. And only by hiking in the fall, can you witness up close and personal the vivid red, yellow and gold leaves that adorn the autumn trees. But how do you learn about these places? The Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA), founded in 1980 is here to help. Not only does the BMTA maintain the trails, offer trail guides and maps for those wanting to explore the BMT on their own, but organized hikes are available as well. The best way to optimize your experience and feel comfortable being in the woods is to hike the trails with other like-minded people. If you ever wanted to start exploring the beautiful mountains in this area, join one of the monthly group hikes. Most of the hikes are considered easy to moderate and upcoming hikes are listed on the website BMTA Activities Calendar page. The BMT more closely follows Benton MacKaye’s original proposed routing for the southern portion of the Appalachian Trail and is

JUNE/JULY 2022

considered a more natural and wild trail, with less foot traffic than the Appalachian Trail. On many sections of the trail, one may hike all day or even several days and never see another hiker. Those that hike the BMT say they like the more remote and primitive feel and the challenge of hiking in these conditions. That said, persons venturing out on remote sections of the trail should be experienced hikers and carry maps and trail guides describing the sections of the trail being traveled. Regulations require that no blazes be allowed in the wilderness areas. BMTA, a nonprofit 501c3 all-volunteer organization dedicated to the maintenance and preservation on the Benton MacKaye Trail. The members’ tireless efforts are not only appreciated by those that use the trail, but the Association has been endorsed by the National Park Service and three National Forests. Volunteers are always in high demand as the needed work is constant. They have been fortunate to have Boy Scouts, Youth Conservation Corps, Trout Unlimited and other organizations supplement their member volunteers. With their help, the BMTA has been able to accelerate completion of many projects over the years. As with most trail organizations, the BMTA is comprised of a volunteer group of trail maintainers and avid hikers who are dedicated to “leaving a footpath for generations to follow.” Maintaining the trail to ensure that it is sustainable, ecologically sound and consistently in the best possible shape to accommodate those that seek to enjoy hiking its trails takes constant

APPALACHIAN COUNTRY LIVING

vigilance and hard work. The Association relies on the generosity of volunteers to keep the trails clear of fallen trees and other debris, rerouting trails as necessary and rebuilding sections of the trail as conditions dictate. If you are a hiker or outdoorsperson who would like to give something back to the wilderness resource, one of the best ways to contribute is by attending the monthly work trips. It’s not all work and can be very rewarding. Another option is becoming a Section Maintainer by adopting a length of trail. This requires a higher level of commitment - approximately 12 hours work per year per mile. Yet another way is available to any who are willing to tackle high-priority items, such as large blowdowns, by joining the Quick-Response Crew. Becoming a member, assisting with administrative needs, serving on the BMTA board of directors, and/or making a financial donation are all ways in which you can lend a hand. It’s easy to join and when you keep your membership current, you’re helping us maintain and improve the trail. Lastly, donations can be targeted specifically toward trail maintenance. The BMTA heartily welcomes your help. ACLM For more information about scheduled hikes and other events please visit: www.bmta.org or find them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Benton-MacKaye-TrailAssociation WWW.ACLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

Rocky’s Place Celebrates 20 Years As Dawsonville’s Ultimate Folk Art Gallery Destination

WORDS: LAUREN WIGGINS PHOTOS: TRACEY BURNETTE

F

ounder and proprietor of Rocky’s Place, Tracey Burnette, can barely believe 20 years has flown by since she took the leap and turned an old mower shed into an art gallery in her backyard. At the time, she was a public school art teacher with a passion for throwing and collecting pottery. She had a vivid dream urging her to create the gallery one night, shortly after her beloved Pekingese of 13 years, Rocky, passed away. Beginning with nothing more than a dream and a namesake, Tracey’s collection surpassed much more than a love of face jugs and she grew personal connections in the southern folk art community. Once she started buying paintings, she realized she’d have to expand, and the humble beginnings of one backyard gallery space quickly drove a need for two display spaces. Now, when visitors make touring appointments, she lovingly JUNE/JULY 2022

refers to the buildings as the “Appetizer,” full of smaller pieces and hand-made ornaments, and the larger space is the “Main Course,” where she houses mammoth works from the likes of folk art favorites, Cornbread, Mose Tolliver, and Howard Finster. This Dawsonville gem is an immersive experience, and people come from all over to see one-of-a-kind finds from self-taught folk artists who remained faithful to the art genre by painting on cabinet doors with Georgia red clay or discounted house paint, usually opting to use their fingers over paint brushes. In true folk art fashion, the paintings hang on 9’ metal center panels and a chain link fence inner wall of the gallery. Rocky’s Place currently houses different styles of folk and outsider art, including works from painters, potters, wood carvers, metal

sculptors, and more. Within those styles, Tracey proudly displays over 250 artists. After 20 years, Rocky’s Place is still one of North Georgia’s largest folk art galleries, boasting thousands of unique pieces and the largest collection of artwork by Cornbread in the universe! If you find yourself headed that way, we highly recommend you make an appointment to visit Tracey and hear her first-hand account of folk art’s rich history in Georgia and beyond. While everyone has their own special reason for retreating into our beautiful north Georgia Mountains, whether it’s the kindness of the people, the relaxed pace of life or the charm of a quaint downtown square, the one thing we all share is an affinity for the awe-inspiring scenery that envelopes us. From the breathtaking views, the fresh mountain air, to the enchanting soundtrack of rushing rivers, the peace and serenity of the lakes, we all cherish our beautiful mountain homes because of the special connection it offers with nature. And the folks at Porch Life 365 Custom Enclosures understand that the best way to embrace those precious surroundings is from a comfy rocker on your own porch! Porch Life 365 Custom Enclosures truly believes that what makes your house a home, is the porch. It is the heart and soul of your home. This is where we start our day, watching the first few rays of sunshine peeking over the mountains, with the smell of a fresh brew wafting through the air. This is where we can spend countless hours, lost in a captivating novel or just drifting off with our furry pal at our side. This is where we make a symphony of laughter and cherished memories with our children and grandchildren. Here we watch the dazzling display of nature’s tapestry of color change with each passing season. We enjoy special moments with our loved ones here. We spend time peacefully with our own thoughts. We may even end the day on our porch, sipping a glass of wine from one of the many local wineries in the area. With this belief in mind, the goal at Porch Life 365 is here to help each and every one of their clients get the most enjoyment and use out of their porches. The first thing they do when they meet with a new client is to JUNE/JULY 2022

endeavor to understand clearly how he or she wants to use their porch areas. Is it to enjoy the views? Is it to increase the usable space in the home? Is it for entertaining guests or primarily for personal use? Will the porch be used year-round or seasonally? Once they have a clear idea of their client’s vision in mind, they make suggestions for a variety of products and improvements that can help their clients turn their porches into their favorite room of the house. Porch Life 365 offers a variety of specialty products designed to increase the comfort and enjoyment of ‘porch sitting.’ Their custom screen enclosures are enhanced by multiple options of screen choices. Better Vue Screens minimize the obstruction of those beautiful mountain views. Solar screens assist in blocking the heat and glare on porches that suffer from direct sun exposure. Specifically designed pet screens are for homeowners that are concerned with potential damage from pets and other animals. For a reliable line of defense against annoying and possibly dangerous insects, 20/20 No-See-Um Screens are a popular option. WWW.ACLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

Their screen installation team is the very best at what they do! They have been installing screen enclosures for over 30 years and their experience, expertise and craftsmanship show through on every porch project they undertake. They pride themselves on keeping porches feeling as wide open and unobstructed as possible. And there simply isn’t any porch they can’t screen. Do you absolutely love sitting on your porch, but hate dealing with all of the discomforts of the outdoors, like pollen, wind and inclement weather? The solution is a three-season enclosure installed with quality products that combine a fixed screen attachment with moving and removable vinyl window style panels. This enables the porch to be enjoyed almost year-round. It also keeps the porch clean and completely usable during the dreaded pollen season. With a three-season porch enclosure, your porch will be ready for enjoying at all times, without the constant need to clean the pollen, bugs and dirt away. With the assistance of a simple heating unit, your north Georgia Mountain porch can also be enjoyed almost year-round. The folks at Porch Life 365 would love to have you stop by their showroom and see all the different products and solutions they offer for all of your porch enclosure needs. They are conveniently located right on Hwy 515, between Ellijay and Blue Ridge at 14224 GA-515 N, Ellijay, Ga 30536. Feel free to stop in and say, ‘Hello.’ Porch Life 365 is a local, family owned and operated business. Give them a call and let their family help your family turn your porch into your custom retreat. Red White and Blue Recipes You Actually Want to Eat! Patriotic holidays bring out all the red white and blue food, for sure, but is that a good thing? For anyone over the age of 8, red white and blue food with lots of artificial ingredients can be… well, horrifying. So put down that grocery store cupcake right now! Appalachian Country Living Magazine has collected a few real food recipes that even sophisticated American foodies will love. In a small bowl mix together the mayonnaise, olive oil, lemon juice, zest, garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Set aside. Note: Blue potatoes tend to bleed a little, so if you want to keep the color contained, mix them with a little aioli separately, to coat, before incorporating with the remaining ingredients. Quarter (or slice) steamed potatoes and place them into a large bowl, along with onion, bell pepper, and parsley. Top with aioli and gently fold together. Season with additional salt and pepper, if needed. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Top with additional chopped red pepper and/or chopped parsley. https://theviewfromgreatisland.com

Star-Spangled Mule

Chicken and Berry Pesto Pasta Salad

This Star-Spangled Mule is a classic Moscow Mule recipe with a twist, thanks to summer-fresh berries and a super special garnish. You don’t need special mugs to serve this cocktail, but we couldn’t resist these silver mugs. To add more sparkle, I skewered fruit onto these foil “fireworks” skewers. I created the watermelon stars using star cookie cutters.

This Chicken and Berry Pesto Pasta Salad is a flavorful and easy to make main dish salad. All the flavors of caprese salad, but using berries instead of tomatoes!

Ingredients 2 ounces vodka 4 ounces ginger beer 1/2 ounce lime juice 6-8 fresh berries Watermelon stars Sprig of mint, lime wedge, and fresh berries, Fireworks skewer Instructions In a Moscow mule mug or Collins glass, add the berries and lime juice. Lightly mash with a spoon or a muddler. Top with ice. Then pour in the vodka and ginger beer. Stir to combine. Serve with a sprig of mint, lime wedge, fresh berries, watermelon stars and tinsel skewers. Be creative! https://inspiredbycharm.com

JUNE/JULY 2022

Ahhhhhh- Vacation Time!

There’s Nothing That Beats Heading Out on Vacation With Our Dogs Beside Us It really matters not where we go, as long as the dogs are going too. Thankfully there are many dog friendly options for today’s dog-loving traveler, and the tri-state area of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee is no exception. But while your bags are packed and ready to go, is Fido really ready to go with you? You want your favorite furry friend to be as happy and comfortable as you are when traveling. Here are a few things to consider before and during your excursion with Fido: Is your dog socialized well enough to enjoy new people, places and things? An under socialized dog can be fearful of new situations, only adding to the stress of being away from his familiar surroundings. If you know your dog is fussy with new people or unknown dogs, it’s best to leave him in the care of a dog sitter or reputable boarding kennel. Is your dog comfortable riding in the car? While most dogs are, I know many dogs who not only don’t like riding in the car, but are so stressed that they exhibit serious stress related behaviors (such as stress vomiting and stress diarrhea). If your dog doesn’t LOVE the car, then reconsider taking him with you. Is your dog crate trained? This means not only will he go into his crate willingly, but does he sincerely enjoy it? For safety, traveling by car with your dog in a crate or a doggy seat belt (such as the Roadie from www.ruffrider.com) is recommended. Also, many hotels require your dog be crated if you’re not with your dog in the hotel room, so make sure Fido loves his crate!

JUNE/JULY 2022

Is your dog comfortable being left alone? Many dogs are fine in new surroundings when they’re with their beloved humans, but not so much when they’re left alone and may whine and/or bark continually while you’re away. Does your dog have good manners in public and in new places? Do you have nice focus and attention from your dog when in unknown surroundings? In the midst of a variety of new distractions, it’s harder for a dog to respond to known cues. It takes practice in new situations for the dog to become proficient. A reliable, rocket recall is also needed if you plan to have any off leash fun with your dog while hiking. See: http://tinyurl.com/rocketrecall If your answer is Yes to these questions, then go for it! You’re ready to have some vacation fun with your furry friend and there are plenty of activities to enjoy here in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. If action is what you’re seeking, then find a regional dock diving event. Dixie Dock Dogs is a good place to start: www.dixiedockdogs.com. Dock diving is easy to understand and wildly fun to watch. The participating dog jumps off an elevated diving dock into a portable pool and the dog with the measurements for the longest and highest jumps is the winner. My own girl, Willow, a 2 year old Australian Shepherd (gone too soon), and I competed in the sport. I like to think she’s rockin’ the dock above. One of the many things I love about the sport is that anyone can enter. That means YOU! Have a dog who loves water? Then show up and enjoy the fun. Some of the best dock diving dogs in the country live in North Georgia so you’re certain to see some big jumps! Here’s a taste of some of our fun back in 2014: http://tinyurl.com/cohuttadockdiving

If you’d rather take a slow stroll through nature, then you can enjoy hiking any number of trails in a nearby national forest. Pick a trail with a waterfall, a view, a meadow or a lake. You have easy access to the Chattahoochee National Forest, the Cohutta Wilderness Area and the Nantahala National Forest, each with thousands of acres to explore. Where to stay? Access www.bringfido.com or www.gopetfriendly.com websites that provide easy access to pet friendly accommodations, hotels, vacation rentals, cabins, B&B’s, campgrounds, and beaches. Don’t forget to check with the local Chamber of Commerce in the town you’re visiting for pet-friendly options. Please do remember that where ever you go, check out the local dog policies. Other things to do: confirm your dogs’ vaccinations are up to date and have a copy with you; obtain a temporary I.D. tag where you can list your temporary address/ phone; keep plenty of bottled water and a portable bowl handy, along with doggie waste bags, a towel, any medications, a brush and, of course a leash. And to insure that Fido is comfortable at night, also take his favorite bed so he’ll sleep as soundly as you do while away from home. Happy Traveling! ACLM

AC LIVING HISTORY

history of indian georgia

– Cherokee Rose

History Editor Leslie Barker Thomas Digs Deep Into The Rich and Exciting Cultural Past with This Ongoing Series About Our Native Ancestors

The Trail Where They Cried

W

When gold was found in Georgia, the government forgot its treaties and drove the Cherokees westward to Indian Territory of Arkansas and later Oklahoma. Approximately one-fourth of the Cherokees died on the journey. The trail west started the end of May to mid-June 1838 and the mothers were grieving and crying so much because they were unable to help their children survive the journey. The legend is that many of the real Cherokee people died from the hardship they endured from the time of the white man dishonoring their treaties to the weeks they endured in the camps in Tennessee waiting to travel to the new lands. So one night after they had made camp along the Trail of Tears, the old men sitting around the dying campfire called up to the Great One in Ga lu na ti (heaven) to help the people in their trouble. The Great One said, “Yes, I have seen the sorrows of the women and I can help them to keep their strength to help the children. Tell the women in the morning to look back where their tears have fallen to the ground. I will cause to grow a plant. I’ll make the plant grow so fast at first that by afternoon they’ll see a white rose, a beautiful blossom with five petals. In the center of the rose, I will put gold to remind them of the gold which the white man wanted when his greed drove the Cherokee from our ancestral home.” The Great One said that the green leaves would have seven leaflets, one for each of the seven clans of the Cherokee. It will have thorns on every stem to protect it from anything that tries to move it away. The next morning the old men told the women to look back for the sign from the Great One. They watched as a blossom formed, so beautiful 30

they forgot to weep and they felt beautiful and strong. By the afternoon they saw many white blossoms as far as they could see. The women began to think about their strength given them to bring up their children as the new Cherokee Nation. This symbol exists for the pain and suffering of the “Trail Where They Cried” in the Cherokee language is known as nu na hi du na tlo hi lu i. The Cherokee Rose continues to grow along the routes of the Trail of Tears all the way into eastern Oklahoma today.

Cherokee Rose Rosacea laevigata Michx.

Is a vigorous evergreen climbing shrub with large prickles, attractive, glossy, trifoliate dark green glabrous leaves and solitary, flat, single, scented white flowers in summer followed by bristly, orange-red hips. The Cherokee Rose climbs over other shrubs and small trees to heights of up to16–33 feet. Leaves are 1-4 inches long, and the flowers are about 3–4 inches in diameter. The species– native to China, Taiwan, Laos and Vietnam– was introduced to the southeastern United States in about 1780, where it soon became naturalized, and gained its common name of ‘Cherokee Rose.’ Used mostly for forming hedges because of its quickness of growth, facility of culture, strength, durability, and beauty.

At the urging of the Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Cherokee rose became Georgia’s state flower on August 18, 1916. The Georgia General Assembly adopted Joint Resolution number 42 stating that Georgia had selected the Cherokee Rose because many states had official state flowers that were “indigenous to the soil of the State. The resolution referred to the Cherokees as “aborigines” in the text of the document that makes the camellia rose the Georgia floral emblem. It also made the mistake of stating that the Cherokee rose was an indigenous plant that grew in every county. ACLM Leslie Barker Thomas is a resident of Ellijay and the President of the Gilmer County Historical Society; President, Georgia Chapter Trail of Tears Association and Board Member of the National Trail of Tears Association. “When history is erased, people’s moral values are also erased.” –Ma Jian Visit the Gilmer County Historical Society Historic Tabor House & Civil War Museum 138 Spring Street, Ellijay, Georgia 30540 706. 276. 1861.
