M ESSAG E FROM THE PRESIDENT

The year 2020 was one we won’t soon forget. For Nantucket Cottage Hospital, it was a time highlighted by unprecedented challenges but also intense focus and resolve among our staff members as we responded together to the pandemic and to meet the needs of the island. In my first year as President and CEO, this crisis very quickly revealed the character of our community and the hospital workforce.

I witnessed the compassion and dedication of staff members from all departments of NCH, as well as the generosity and thoughtfulness of island residents, businesses and other organizations as they supported our mission in so many ways. That community spirit lifted us up as we confronted the pandemic and we were heartened to feel that overwhelming support from every corner of the island.

We will continue to focus and adapt to the unique challenges of the pandemic, including ongoing testing and the community-wide distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, even as we also look ahead to a bright future for our hospital and maximizing the potential of our new facility. This is your hospital, and our goal is to meet and exceed the needs of our island community. To that end, we will be launching what I am calling the Lighthouse system of whole person care, and that includes mind, body, and spiritual wellness. This project will not only enhance access to primary care, but also reimagine the way in which it is delivered and improve the overall wellness of our community. Expect to hear much more about Lighthouse in the coming months.

As Co-Chairs of the NCH Fund, we want to thank you for the incredible support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital over the past year. It has been an honor to serve our hospital and our community in this way. When we agreed to volunteer for this important cause, COVID-19 wasn’t even on the horizon yet. When the pandemic arrived, we were uncertain how it would impact our ability to generate support for the hospital. But it quickly became clear that Nantucketers – both year-round and seasonal residents – were eager to help in any way they could. We are so proud of the way the island stepped up to support NCH at such a critical moment, and the past year has demonstrated the unique and essential bond between the hospital and the community.

Annual giving is so important to the success of NCH because these unrestricted funds touch every department and every patient who walks through the doors. Your gifts sustain primary care, allow the Emergency Department to remain open and appropriately staffed 24/7, and give the clinical team the tools it needs to provide for your medical care every day. Nantucket Cottage Hospital and the services it provides are essential to our island community, and the NCH Fund is the lifeline that allows it to navigate the many fiscal and operational challenges faced by small community hospitals.

The pandemic has demonstrated the importance of a hospital that is able to nimbly respond to the needs of its patients and public health issues as they arise. Ensuring that Nantucket Cottage Hospital is there when you and your family need it requires not only a talented team of clinicians and leaders, but also ongoing, community-wide philanthropy and a recognition of the important role it plays in island life. Dear Nantucketers, Thank you. As we look back on what has been a remarkable year for our island and our hospital, we can only admire and praise the community spirit of Nantucket, which has been demonstrated in so many ways. Nantucket Cottage Hospital has been the beneficiary of this spirit, from the outpouring of gifts and contributions to the many offers we have received from volunteers who wanted to help in any way they could. In our role as Co-Chairs of the NCH Marketing and Development Committee, we have seen the impact you have made, not just in the big picture to sustain our hospital during a tumultuous time, but on a personal level in the way your generosity has galvanized our staff members despite the challenges they have faced. We are proud to serve on this committee as well as members of the NCH Board of Trustees, along with so many other talented volunteers who give their time, talent and treasure to ensure our community hospital is healthy, thriving, and meeting the needs of island patients.

Now as we look ahead and regain some semblance of normality, we share an incredible sense of optimism for Nantucket Cottage Hospital and the promise of our new facility under the leadership of President and CEO Gary Shaw.

For more than 100 years, our island hospital has relied upon the generosity and incredible community spirit of our island, and this will continue to be the case as we move into this exciting new era and leave the pandemic behind.

GIFTS IN KIND

As the COVID-19 pandemic began, the outpouring of support from the community was an incredible source of inspiration that lifted the spirits of our hospital staff members during this crisis.

We are so grateful for the countless donations of handmade masks, PPE, food, flowers, and the many offers to volunteer to assist our response effort.

The Nantucket community’s reputation for being caring, compassionate and closeknit is well deserved. Such an incredible outpouring of support may have caused us to inadvertently miss an opportunity to thank many other individuals and businesses who supported NCH during this challenging time.

“Nantucket, Let’s Get Sewing” and the countless people who handmade masks during the shortage. Spearheaded by Ayesha Barber and Allyson Mitchell, the movement gained viral traction on social media during the initial days of the pandemic and supplied NCH and other island organizations with thousands of masks to keep everyone safe.

The dozens of local businesses who joined the “Feed the Frontlines” initiative which organized island restaurants, bakeries and other food establishments to provide meals for the hospital staff and the town’s first responders. The movement was led by Heather Woodbury at Wicked Island Bakery and provided NCH staff with tasty meals and treats for months.

The Nantucket Portrait Project, spearheaded

by Bill Hoenk, gathered island families to pose for photos in front of their homes during the initial quarantine restrictions, raising money for NCH and spreading awareness about the critical need to stayat-home.

Viral videos circulated the Nantucket social media scene, including the #CoronaSongChallenge by Laura Cunningham, Chris Wendzicki and Lorna Dollery, that not only raised money for NCH but brightened the spirits of the Grey Lady during the pandemic.

109TH ANNUAL MEETING

Nantucket Cottage Hospital welcomed Craig Muhlhauser as its new Chairman of the Board of Trustees during its 109th Annual Meeting on August 21st, 2020 while honoring the accomplishments of outgoing Chair Kevin Hickey. Special guest Dr. Peter Slavin, President of Massachusetts General Hospital, provided an update from Boston, touching on the research happening around treatments and immunizations for COVID-19.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital President and CEO Gary Shaw announced to the attendees - gathering virtually on Zoom - the hospital’s annual awards to staff and community members who have made significant contributions to the mission of NCH over the past year.

Bruce Percelay Philanthropic Award: Jeanine Borthwick “Jeanine has been an incredibly dedicated, motivated and effective fundraiser for this hospital,” Percelay said. “Through the Borthwicks’ own generosity, through Jeanine’s ability to raise money, all the way through her creation of the ‘Nantucketopoly’ game which benefited the hospital, she has proven herself to be invaluable and has made a permanent contribution to the hospital.”

Seinfeld/Hartmann Prize for Compassionate Care: Diane Cabral “For over 30 years, Diane has been the first face or voice for thousands and thousands of patients, bringing true compassion to the hospital,” said former President and CEO Dr. Margot Hartmann, the co-founder of the prize.

Sandy Craig Leadership Award: Kevin Hickey, as well as the elected members of the Nantucket Select Board and the Town of Nantucket’s core Incident Command team.

“Since 2015, Kevin has tirelessly served as Chair of our Board of Trustees during one of the most challenging and historic times in the history of Nantucket Cottage Hospital,” Shaw said. “Kevin guided our hospital through the construction of our new facility, a $120 million capital campaign, multiple leadership transitions, and so many more unique and challenging circumstances. We could not have accomplished what we did without his leadership.”

The other recipients included the five elected Select Board members, as well as town manager Libby Gibson, director of Health and Human Services Roberto Santamaria, Emergency Management Coordinator Brendan Coakley, Police Chief Bill Pittman and Fire Chief Steve Murphy. Gibson and Select Board Chair Dawn Hill Holdgate were presented the award as they represented their colleagues during the ceremony. “Their leadership helped guide the town through some very difficult and challenging times, and their willingness to collaborate and partner with the hospital during the ongoing coronavirus response has been tremendously valuable,” Shaw said. “They made the difficult and sometimes controversial decisions that helped keep Nantucket safe.”

Phil Murray Business Award: Phil Marks and Nantucket Energy, as well as the Community Foundation for Nantucket.

When the hospital’s pandemic response ramped up, it put out a call to the community for supplies of PPE and other items in the event they would be needed during a surge of COVID-19 patients. So many community members stepped up, but one person who caught the attention of the hospital was Phil Marks, who was at the NCH loading dock almost immediately with a pallet of 30,000 gloves, as well as oxygen, valves, and portable oxygen generating machines. Phil and his company Nantucket Energy were there for the hospital in so many ways during the ordeal.

Under the leadership of Margaretta Andrews, the Community Foundation served a critical role for the island community by establishing the Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief that has helped so many Nantucket non-profits, including the hospital, to continue to serve island residents through the pandemic. This fund has also been critical in providing the resources needed to deliver food to seniors and others in need during the crisis. The Community Foundation has proven itself to be an indispensable source of guidance and support for the community.

Myrt Eldridge Volunteer of the Year Award: Ayesha Barber and Alli Mitchell, as well as Heather Woodbury.

Ayesha and Alli were the driving force behind the community effort to sew homemade masks for individuals and businesses around the island during the initial coronavirus response. They galvanized and organized a small army of seamstresses and others to make masks both for the hospital and many others across the island to get them the proper protection and keep everyone safe.

Woodbury, co-owner of Wicked Island Bakery, was the leader of the “Feed the Frontlines” initiative which organized island restaurants, bakeries and other food establishments to provide meals for the hospital staff and the town’s first responders. “This was so gratifying for staff here at the hospital and I know these deliveries of delicious food from our friends and neighbors lifted the spirits of our employees during a very difficult time. Heather helped make this happen and did it all on a volunteer basis out of the goodness of her heart,” Shaw said.

Finally, the NCH Board of Trustees also welcomed two new members: • Jeanette Ives-Erickson, RN, DNP • Ronald J. Levy The outgoing Trustees who had reached their term limit or were not standing for reelection were thanked for their service, including Judy Belash, Jeanine Borthwick, Kevin Hickey, Ian Loring, and another former Chair, Mike Roberts.

Extraordinary times offered us an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate the heart of Nantucket. While we knew that the 2020 Boston Pops on Nantucket would not look like the Pops concerts of years past, it was important that we didn’t give up on this wonderful community event.

We reimagined the 24th annual event and delivered a special experience that celebrated the hospital, our brave healthcare workers, first responders, and essential workers across the island. The free broadcast included appearances from the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Conductor Keith Lockhart and Laureate Conductor John Williams, as well as dozens of local musicians who answered the call to help support and celebrate health care workers.

Chaired by Mickey and Bob Atchinson, the funds raised allowed NCH to continue to respond to the pandemic’s unparalleled challenges. We are grateful to everyone who continued to support this beloved island event, and thank presenting sponsor, Nantucket Island Resorts, as well as Fidelity Investments for their loyalty and generosity.

Like so many other local businesses, the Hospital Thrift Shop had to reimagine itself to move forward despite the pandemic.

This long-standing and important Nantucket institution found a way to continue its mission of providing affordable goods to the Nantucket community while raising funds for the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

The Shop was poised to have another record-breaking year of sales in 2020: the building at 17 India Street plus five storage spaces were full of top-quality items that had been donated and processed by volunteers during the off-season to get ready for our Opening Day in May of 2020.

Those plans disappeared when the Shop was shuttered in March and April. By May, the Board of Directors and the staff were executing a new plan. A new e-commerce platform was launched to sell donated goods online on a website that resembled the Hospital Thrift Shop’s physical space and its familiar departments and rooms: Gift Room, Thrift Room, Book Room, Linens, Women’s, Men’s, Children’s and Toys, and the popular Nantucket Room that featured unique and eclectic “Nantucket” themed items.

By early July, the Shop also began hosting twice weekly outdoor driveway sales and opened the basement for limited customers. The volunteers and staff worked exceptionally hard to deliver these “safe shopping” days.

Even though the front door never opened, the Thrift Shop still had many devoted shoppers. The online store and outdoor sales continued through the summer and into the fall. The Thrift Shop staff and volunteers forge on into the 2021 season with more knowledge and experience, and they invite others to “Donate, Shop, Volunteer…Be Part of a Great Island Tradition.”

Women+Wellness took a virtual turn in 2020 and offered a free program focused on “emotional labor,” a phenomenon that involves the exertion of energy for the purpose of addressing other people’s feelings, trying to make them feel comfortable, or seeking to live up to social expectations – a topic fitting for these challenging times.

A panel of speakers included Sarah Munsen, NCH’s Social Services Manager, Lera Keller, Doula & Educator at Lera Keller Reproductive Journey Support, and Charity Grace Mofsen, Community Advocate and DEI Consultant. Chaired by Sarah Newton and a dedicated group of volunteers, 2020’s Women+Wellness continued to provide valuable, free educational opportunities to the community.

In 2020, Swim Across America changed course and held several virtual events throughout the summer. The Solo Run for Hope, Coast to Coast Challenge, Move the Rock and Personal Challenges included over 450 participants who together raised $380,000 for cancer care on Nantucket.

Thank you to the 450+ participants, sponsors and donors for supporting SAA-Nantucket during this unique year and for helping to make an impact in the fight against cancer. We hope to see you this summer at Jetties Beach on July 24, 2021.

NANTUCKET SOLO RUN FOR HOPE Nantucket Solo Run for Hope included close to 400 participants from casual walkers to top triathletes, running and walking on and off the island to support cancer care. Participants logged in from as far as Oman, as well as on a Coast Guard Cutter in the Pacific Ocean!

NANTUCKET COAST TO COAST CHALLENGE The Coast to Coast Challenge ran from June 1 through August 31. Together, we had 131 participants travel 10,873 virtual miles from Nantucket to Los Angeles stopping along the way at 21 different Swim Across America cities.

PERSONAL CHALLENGES SAA-Nantucket participants Grant Wentworth and Tyler Roethke took their personal challenge to a whole new level by swimming from Cape Cod to Martha’s Vineyard on August 8, 2020. These two accomplished the challenging swim in just under 2 hours and together raised $110,000 for on-island cancer care.

MOVE THE ROCK Move the Rock Challenge wrapped up the summer and raised $20,000 with 126 participants who walked, ran and biked various distances to complete their challenge.

On Monday, September 14th, 2020, an abbreviated version of our annual Golf Weekend took place at Sankaty Head Golf Club.

Thirty-two socially-distanced teams played the historic course to raise money for NCH. To abide by state regulations at the time, only players from New England states were able to participate.

M ESSAG E FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES This past tumultuous year represents an extraordinary chapter in the 90-plus year history of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. The coronavirus pandemic has posed difficult challenges for our island community, our economy, schools as well as the many seasonal residents and tourists that share our passion and love of Nantucket. Throughout this journey, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has been there for you and your family.

As I reflect on this year, I feel that if we are open and willing to listen and learn. This is one of those “once in a lifetime” crises, where we can learn the most on how we might transform our lives, families, and Nantucket for the better.

2021 is a year where we will begin a journey, pivoting from a prolonged pandemic to an emphasis on quality and prevention.

We will begin by improving our accessibility through investments in clinical staff, training, and new technologies to more aggressively keep our patients healthy by offering the best and least expensive ways to improve people’s health. In the near term, we will be expanding the applications of telemedicine and our utilization of the vast expertise of our affiliate Massachusetts General Hospital across a wider range of disciplines. We will further enhance the primary care practice with additional resources and training to treat the whole person not just their immediate problem. Preventive care is essential for fostering a culture of health and wellness to improve the underlying health conditions of our entire Nantucket community.

We also learned the COVID-19 pandemic is much too big to fight it alone. We are so truly fortunate to have committed donors and a local Board of Trustees that had the foresight and courage to create our affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital 15 years ago. This partnership allowed us to survive this pandemic and is being strengthened to provide the competencies, care, and support for Nantucket Cottage Hospital when and where we need it. Thank you!

We are also fortunate to have strong leadership at NCH in Gary Shaw, CEO, and his leadership team. We look forward to your continued support to allow us to invest in new talent, training, developing talent and strong succession plans to make NCH the highest valued community resource for many years to come.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to extend our deep appreciation for the generosity and support of our donors and the entire community of Nantucket.
