‘S WORKS ARE DISTINCTLY ROOTED IN TRADITIONAL AMERICAN ARTS AND CULTURE. HE SEEMS TO MIX POP ART AND ITS INVESTIGATION OF THE SURFACES OF POPULAR CULTURE – AS PRACTICED BY WARHOL AND LICHTENSTIEN – WITH AN ACERBIC AND SATIRICAL EXISTENTIALISM OF HIS OWN. THE WORKS OFTEN POSSESS A DUALITY OF REMARKABLE GLOOM AND SADNESS AND AT THE SAME TIME SOMETHING VERY EFFORTLESS, PLAYFUL AND LIGHT.

The handmade, digital and animated collages of French artist Matthieu Bourel, currently living and working in Berlin, are based on the power of images and the diversions resulting from various visual combinations. He defines his work as ‘data-ism’, and when mixing elements, he often seeks to evoke a story that, although absent from the known reality, is powerfully present before the viewer and inspires ‘nostalgia for a period in time that never truly existed’.

Erlanger, who lives and works in New York City, staged the tails in Laundry Zone in Los Angeles’ Arlington Heights neighborhood. The installation was conceptualized in partnership with Mother Culture, a contemporary art and media platform that happens to be based near the laundromat. “Ida” consists of (presumably) life-size mermaid tails that are covered in scales, with bifurcated fins in shades of yellow and pink.

Artist and curator

Olivia Erlanger upends fantastical ideas of mermaids with her documentation of mermaid tails emerging from laundromat washing machines.
