UNDERGRADUATE PROFILE

MEET 2017 DEAC

Outstanding Graduate of the Year STEPHANIE WEBB “I realized I was passionate about this and decided to take it a step further by making a career out of it,” Webb says. “I am married to an Air Force pilot, and we are stationed in a small town in New Mexico. Due to the lack of local universities offering programs in nutrition, I knew I would need to find a good online option. […] ACHS met all of my needs in distance learning, and it was a privilege to learn with their highly qualified professors.” Stephanie Webb, MS MS in Holistic Nutrition Graduate San Antonio, TX 2016

Webb earned her Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition from ACHS in 2017, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. She also concurrently completed a Graduate Certificate in Holistic Nutrition. Webb holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Brigham Young University. After having her three children, she realized how crucial nutrition is for living your best life, and studied diet and nutrition as a serious hobby before returning to school. Webb is also an Eating Psychology coach and owner of Eat Happy Nutrition, a private health coaching practice that focuses on helping women to take the guilt out of good nutrition and to learn that eating healthy can be simple and fun. “My contributions to the field of nutrition have largely been in education. I work with women all over the country to help make lasting, positive change toward health in the areas of nutrition as well as overall lifestyle,” Webb says. Learn more about Stephanie and her holistic health practice online at http://www.athappynutrition.com/. Watch her nomination video online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNc0dDsM4TM.

Each year ACHS chooses a graduate to represent the College in the DEAC Annual Outstanding Graduate program. Selection criteria includes review of the graduate’s academic record as well as the level and quality of their contribution to society and to their chosen profession.

CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMS Please note: ACHS Certificate and Diploma programs do not constitute a degree. Credits earned in a Certificate or Diploma program may be used toward an ACHS degree at the corresponding level when applicable. Career change, evolving industries, job and regulatory requirements challenge us all to increase our skills and capacities throughout our lives. Personal or family health challenges or a new role as a family caregiver can also lead us to seek additional training in the healthcare field. ACHS’s Certificate and Diploma programs are intended for those seeking advanced knowledge and skills in new fields. Certificate and Diploma students take the same courses that are available to ACHS AAS students and the same policies and procedures apply. Students can also enroll for up to three courses without first choosing to apply to a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree program. Students who already possess an Associate or higher degree can complete a Certificate or Diploma to further their knowledge in a particular subject matter. Students who complete a Certificate or Diploma may be eligible to apply those credits toward completion of an ACHS AAS degree program when applicable.

GRADUATE DEGREES

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMPLEMENTARY ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE ™

Consumer use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) continues to increase, fueled by a number of factors, including increasing research of efficacy, dissatisfaction with allopathic models (particularly for chronic health problems), and an aging population. The challenge to the industry will be to integrate CAM to most benefit the consumer, focusing on the complementary rather than the alternative nature of the wide variety of modalities available and leading the way forward to a wellness-based concept of healthcare. Those who would play a part in leading the industry to successful integration must be able to facilitate change in a holistic and encompassing manner in the context of rapid change in the healthcare industry.

“I have great respect for this school because they have great respect for me and my time, issues, concerns and work with you to succeed. The courses are great, challenging and open the door to exploring with excellent texts and materials!” Yvonne Sylla MS in CAM Student Conyers, GA 2017

ACHS has developed a unique and innovative approach to the degree of Master of Science in CAM, with a clear mission to educate outstanding men and women to provide leadership in the industry. Career Goals: • Scholar

• Lifestyle Coach or Consultant

• Educator

• Adjunct to an existing healthcare

profession

• Advocate

Note that the MS in CAM is not a clinically oriented program and graduation does not confer a license to practice medicine. This program: • Is approved by the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) (http://www.nanp.org)* • Meets the education requirements for graduates to sit the Board Certification in Holistic

Teas Many herbs can be easily prepared as teas.

RECIPES

Basic Recipe Herb: 1 teaspoon Purified or filtered water: 1 cup Directions Place your herbs into a ceramic or glass teapot. Bring the water to a boil. Do not use an aluminum pot. Turn off the heat and pour the water over the herb. Cover the pot and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain the tea in a non-aluminum strainer and then drink. Use immediately. Do not store. Honey, lemon, or milk can be added, although milk tends to mask the delicate flavors. Do not use honey with infants younger than one year as there have been reports of botulism spores in honey and this can be fatal in infants. Keep all herbal preparations out of the reach of children. Check herb contraindications before preparing herbs as teas or infusions.

GRADUATE DEGREES

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HOLISTIC NUTRITION

The mission of the MS in Holistic Nutrition degree program is to provide professional holistic nutrition and physical health recommendations from which community programming and client education can be based. This in turn will help people to live healthier lives, prevent illness or injury, and reduce the risk of chronic disease while promoting wellness. Holistic nutrition is the foundation to any holistic health lifestyle plan for optimal health. The United States healthcare system has shifted its emphasis to prevention in an effort to reduce healthcare costs and service a society that is both growing and living longer. With the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in late 2010 by the U.S. Government, there is even more focus on prevention and wellness. The National Prevention Strategy (NPS) was released June 16, 2011, as part of the ACA. The NPS launched a comprehensive plan that will help increase the number of Americans who are healthy at every stage of life. Nutrition and healthy eating are one of the seven primary priorities outlined in the detailed NPS strategy.1 Career Goals: • Holistic Nutrition Consultant,

Professional Graduate Profile DUSTY FLOYD, MS “Many of my closest family members and friends, including my husband, mother, aunt, and dear friend were plagued with cancer,” Floyd says. “My own daughter, barely a year old at the time, faced severe medical challenges that I helped her overcome through proper nutrition. […] It was in this moment that I found ACHS. They were accredited, affordable, and approachable.” Dusty Floyd MS in CAM Graduate Brodentown, NJ 2016

DEAC 2016 Outstanding Graduate award winner Dusty Floyd earned her Master of Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine from ACHS in 2013, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Floyd holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Information Technology, and Spanish from Monmouth University. After watching many family members and friends struggle with severe health issues, Floyd was inspired to pursue an education in CAM. Floyd now provides nutritional and fitness counseling at Premier Medicine and Wellness in Bordentown, New Jersey (http://www.premier-medicine.com). She chose the MS in CAM program to earn a quality education in the holistic health field so she could help as many people as possible struggling with debilitating health issues. “The ACHS motto, ‘Learn well. Live Well. Educate Others.’ deeply resonated with me,” Floyd says. “I wanted to earn a quality education in the holistic health field so I could pay it forward and help as many people as possible with their own journeys toward health and wellness.” Read more about Dusty at achs.edu/outstanding-graduate-year-program.
