2021 NPD Honorees Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Kathy Buechel Executive Director of The Benter Foundation and Senior Lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh, Kathy has demonstrated exceptional generosity to nonprofits of all sizes through her personal work and foundation leadership. She encourages friends, colleagues, and neighbors to join her philanthropic pursuits through extensive community involvement.

Kathy has impacted the operations and programming of countless organizations through engaged investments and has dedicated her career to advancing philanthropy in WPA and beyond. Under Kathy’s leadership of the Benter Foundation, she has made key investments in the arts, transportation, and sustaining public spaces. Prior to leading the foundation, Kathy spent decades at the Alcoa Foundation, where in 1999 she was appointed President. In addition to professional achievements, Kathy leads by example. She has a lengthy list of accomplishments in various nonprofit board roles. Working as a senior lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh, she fosters the next generation of philanthropists by providing a foundation for them to flourish and continue to make our region a better place.

Outstanding Philanthropist Nancy & Paul Collier Nancy & Paul Collier have a heart for children and want to encourage children to advance their education. They intentionally carve out time to make our region, and children stronger. They have served as Gala chairs for the Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF) for 3 years. They HCEF by making personal gifts and connecting others to the work of the organization. In addition to supporting the mission of the HCEF, the Collier’s are active in providing scholarships to youth attending Our Lady of Sacred Heart. One of the criteria for their scholarship is evidence of a “giving heart” so youth can be inspired and encouraged to show good will and good deeds. They also help provide youth scholarships at Holy Family/Naz Prep and at Dr. Collier’s alma mater, St. Joe’s in New Jersey. This kind of community spirit is rare. Their ability to bring others with them, inspires the true spirit of philanthropy.

Outstanding Youth Volunteer Fundraisers Maeve Shaughnessy & Sydney Birchard Maeve and Sydney are the co-founders of ALS Kids. They are classmates and friends, but really bonded over the ALS diagnosis of their grandparents and wanted to see awareness raised for this disease. In just 5 years, these two young ladies have raised more than $50,000 for the local ALS chapter. In addition to fundraising, they have become active in advocacy efforts for those living with ALS. Maeve and Sydney pitched their idea of ALS Kids to local web marketing consulting firm, C-Leveled. C-Leveled's “Be the Boss” program empowers young people to take control of their future and make positive impacts on society through entrepreneurship. The young ladies won the competition and were the only ones that pitched a philanthropic project. They won monthly pro bono meetings with C-Leveled's staff who guided them in the marketing and business strategy of their project. The list of events that the girls have hosted to raise funds and awareness of ALS is LONG! They have run events from a 5K to a youth softball tournament and have even been guest scoopers at Rita’s Italian Ice! Like everyone else, in 2020 the girls pivoted and started virtual events like Coffee for a Cause and a virtual 5K. They continue to raise funds and awareness for ALS.
