WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 14, Term Four, Week One, 18 October 2019

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland

Welcome back to Term four, and a very special welcome to the twelve new students who have started this term too.

As I said it to the students on Monday at Assembly, this term is busy and short so there is a slight feeling of ‘legs not touching the ground’.

Hopefully, everyone had a chance to share in the excellent Educational Review Office report. I distributed this week. The Board and staff were all very pleased with the findings, as was the senior Management Team. I personally feel this endorses decisions you have made as parents in choosing our wonderful school.

I would also like to welcome Miss Melissa Hayes to ACG Sunderland and our community. Miss Hayes is teaching in our New Entrants’ class.

Miss Hayes said she loves teaching and the variety it provides in that ‘no day is the same’. She believes it is a wonderful feeling arriving each day to teach children who are so eager to learn something new and take new risks in their learning. Throughout her teaching career, she has experienced teaching across a variety of age groups ranging from New Entrants through to year Eight. She has taught at a number of schools in both the public and independent sector in the UK and New Zealand.

This week, we also had pleasure in highlighting a past and a present student. Bond Roby, a graduate from, 2018 has been selected to represent New Zealand at the World carting Championships in Italy. There is a detailed article in this newsletter plus on Social Media. Also, Erin Gerrity, graduating this year – won a very special guitar after she wrote an article about her musical influences.

This is a fitting reward for one of our most talented musical students – again the full article is in this newsletter and online.

Cambridge examinations are full on this week, with Checkpoint – Year Six and Nine, IGCSE, AS and A2.

The feedback from the students is that they feel well prepared for the process.

Competition Winner Erin Geraghty “I’m inspired by all types of music, whether it be drum and bass, classical music or folk songs. Anything that has heart and soul is something that inspires me, and even my song writing itself.” - ACG Sunderland Year 13 student, Erin Geraghty Sharing her thoughts on musical inspirations was all it took for ACG Sunderland Year 13 student, Erin Geraghty, to win a Gibson Les Paul Studio Tribute Guitar in a recent NZ Rockshop competition.

Loyally committed to a whole host of musical heroes, from the Beatles and Queen to Kimbra, Coldplay and local Kiwi artists, this talented singer/songwriter confirms that her musical influences are difficult to pin down.

“I definitely couldn’t choose one song or artist to be inspired by” she says. “Everybody fuels everybody else.”

“I write a mishmash of indie and alternative music, but I have found that the songs I write, reflect the artists that I was listening to at that time. I am really interested in experimenting with jazz fusion sounds at the moment.”

A born performer, Erin began learning the piano at age three, and also plays the violin, guitar, ukulele, saxophone and flute, along with many percussion instruments including marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel.

Involved in a number of concert bands over the years, Erin is currently focusing her energies on a rock back she co-founded called The Moon Children. Having been together for over five years, the band celebrated great success in 2019 after placing second at Smokefree Rockquest Auckland Central finals.

“We all have really grown up through this musical journey” says Erin. “Our songs and skills have matured and our drive to enter competitions, and to keep performing as much as we can, has definitely helped us be the musicians we are today. I always love learning new things and trying different genres and styles.”

Erin’s passion for music is reflected in the detail she finds within each song. “My favourite part of music is listening closely to it and hearing instruments and sounds that aren’t as obvious. Like how the Beatles recorded their songs with different sounds on different sides of the speaker” she reports. “I collect vinyl and the satisfying experience of listening to albums one by one, in order of how the artist wants you to listen to their work, is just amazing.”

While Erin plans to study business and communication at university, majoring in media and audio, she is certain that music will continue to play a big part in her future. “I am planning to continue recording my songs right after my external exams conclude, and hopefully will release my EP mid next year” she says. “I’ll always try to incorporate music into my life, and will continue to do gigs, write songs and even run music workshops in my local community. As long as I’m doing something creative with music - then I’m happy.”

Past Student Profile: - Bond Roby Taking on the world one race at a time For ACG Sunderland alumnus, Bond Roby, representing New Zealand in the upcoming Rotax® MAX Challenge™ Grand Finals (RMCGF) at the Circuito Internazionale di Napoli in Sarno, Italy is the realisation of a dream.

Beginning his career in competitive go karting in 2016, Bond’s ultimate focus has always been to race against the world’s best. He secured his opportunity to do so by winning the NZ Rotax® MAX Challenge™ DD2, two speed shifter class, at Hampton Downs in September.

“Ever since day one, my goal has been to attend the world finals” Bond says. “This is my third year attempting to qualify and it is definitely the highest point in my career so far. Being able to represent my country in something I love, with so many talented people, is such a big honour.”

This unique kart racing competition has been growing rapidly since its inaugural year in 2000 with 15,000 racers participating globally in national or international events to qualify for the RMCGF. In 2019, the invitational final will see 360 racers from over 60 countries competing.

Running from 19th to 26th of October, the format is based on a "one-make-engine" formula, as the same chassis, tyres and Rotax® engines are used in each racing class. This means that each participant has an equal chance of winning.

“At the world finals everyone has exactly the same equipment, meaning it’s based solely on the driver’s skill.

Although this is intimidating, it is really exciting to have everyone on the same level” Bond explains.

After the RMCGF in Italy, Bond will then head to the biggest karting event in America, racing at the SuperKarts USA (SKUSA) super-nationals in Las Vegas this November.

As to what the future holds, Bond is open to all possibilities in the karting world and is also planning to undertake a music production course at MAINZ University next year.

“What comes after SKUSA will depend on our schedule for next year” he explains. “I have never had any expectations in terms of motorsport. That’s mostly due to the unpredictable nature of the sport and the low chances and high costs of making it as a professional. I just want to go as far as possible and continue to have fun whilst doing it.”

Bond concludes by sharing some valuable advice he has acquired from the racetrack. “The most important lesson that karting has taught me is that everything is unpredictable and all you can do is your best in the moment. Sometimes, during a race, things are out of your control and all you can do is give it your all. The same goes for life.”

Term Four Charity – NorWest Care Trust

In Term Four, the Student Leadership team is supporting the NorWest Care Trust. The NorWest Care Trust works to ensure that everyone in our local community can enjoy the holiday season, by hand making and delivering Christmas hampers for the families who are in need. We are excited about the difference that we could make to our local community through the work of the NorWest Care Trust at this important time of year.

For the first part of our service, each of the six Houses will have a section of three Christmas trees displayed on their House wall in the atrium. To decorate the trees, we would like to offer you the opportunity to sponsor an ornament.

Each ornament will be decorated with the name of the family that sponsors it, and the ornaments will vary in colour and size depending on the amount donated: blue symbolises a $10 donation, red symbolises a $20 donation, silver symbolises a $30 donation and gold symbolise a donation of $50 or more. Smaller or anonymous donations can be placed in a jar that will be under each tree. You are welcome to take your ornament home at the end of term four as a memento. At the end of the year, the House with the most money donated will get a reward.

To sponsor an ornament, please fill out the form attached and return it to reception with your donation OR transfer your donation to the ACG Sunderland account: 03 0252 0820953 00. Use your child’s House (McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, or Findlay) as the reference and do not forget to include the name you would like to appear on your decoration.

Alongside the Christmas tree decorations, we will also be running a mystery bucket game. The aim for the students is to fill up the House boxes at reception with donations. The Leaders of the box that is the fullest every two weeks will get dunked at lunch time. This fun game will give students the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause.

Six donation boxes will be left in the Reception area and labelled with McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, and Findlay. Please place all non-perishable food donations in the box of your choice.

Borneo Trip

In December 2020, a group of 15 college students and 2 teachers will be going to Borneo to participate in a community service trip. The main focus of the trip involves a community project, such as building a bus shelter, a school block, a toilet block or a water well. To participate in such activities, we need to fundraise for the materials used in the construction process. We have thought of many ways in which to fundraise for the community project, such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, selling Eco Store soap, specially designed t-shirts/tote bags and many more that are yet to be announced. Our most consistently available method of donation is our GiveALittle page, and we would very much appreciate any donation given on that page, as it is essential that we raise enough money to provide infrastructure to the developing village that we will be staying with in Borneo.
