WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 16, Term Three, Week Six, 28 August 2020

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland

I’m sure like me you were all relieved with the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday afternoon that Auckland would be returning to Alert Level 2 on Sunday night.

It has been a challenging time for everyone – particularly the second time around, as we all knew what we were in for I believe. As I outlined last week, I have been so very impressed with all our students – they have been little troopers, making the best of each and every situation during this lockdown period. I am also aware that not all children find online/virtual learning compatible with their personalities. In some cases, parents have really stepped up to adjust in this environment both in the Primary and the College. I’m sure your children will appreciate this in time!

The transition back to Level 2 at ACG Sunderland will be a smooth one I’m sure, however, please do not hesitate to reach out to staff or senior management if you believe we can assist.

With regard to the start back to face-to-face learning on the 31st August, I do ask all parents to read our procedures closely.

Below are some bullet points to assist:

Temperature checks will be mandatory upon entering ACG Sunderland

Drop off and pick up - Primary (Primary asphalt) - 3.00pm Lower Primary - 3.10pm Upper Primary - 3.10pm College (main carpark)

• All children and staff will be temperature checked on arrival for at least the first week.

Any child with an elevated temperature beyond 37.7° C will be required to return home and then visit a GP. • Unless visiting to meet with a staff member all parents are asked to keep out of the school buildings.

• All classrooms/bathrooms and points of entry into the school will have hand sanitizer stations. All students are requested to use these facilities.

• Masks are mandatory on our buses and children and staff are welcome to wear them at school if they or their parents' desire.

• We request 2m spacing in the carpark on entry. If it is wet, please stay in your vehicle until the numbers reduce.

Lastly, we have been here before and I’m confident in Mrs. Sonya Eldridge and her team to keep staff and children safe.

Year 1NC students are learning about rhyming words. They also tried to write their own version of Humpty Dumpty by changing the last word in each line.

Level Three Lockdown hasn’t stopped Sunderland Primary from celebrating our Principals birthday. Our Primary shared their homemade birthday cards to Mr Villars during a Zoom session.

Primary Year 1 students continue to explore Technology at home. They enjoyed the fruit stamping activity and had fun creating different figures out of the fruits they used.

Primary ESOL In the Cambridge English Flyers ESOL class we have been working on the unit “What’s for dinner?”.

Students have been reading about animals and the food they eat in the wild, learning about the use of comparative and superlative adjectives. We have been listening to cake making recipes and learning to organise detailed instructions into the correct order, even making our own delicious muffins and cakes during lockdown, as shown by Knox in 3WB.

Lockdown and Online Learning Lockdown, it is here again.

It surely is quite disappointing.

While Auckland has been moved to alert level 3, ACG Sunderland has started our online classes again.

Credits to the staff, school is back to online learning!

From what I believe is a common perspective, online learning can easily distract yourself from being awake. Online learning is like ploughing through rocks just to make similar progress as you would make face-toface at school. It is not easy.

The only thing that is easy about online learnings is waking at 8:29 and just logging online for class. The teachers really try for the students but inevitably the physical distance of isolation is not the same.

However, I believe that ACG Sunderland is doing a wonderful job, supporting the students with their learning. I am sure that the students are grateful to have staff members from our school on the other side of the screen but can’t wait for school to start back again.

Staying safe during lockdown Two weeks of lockdown. I’ve got to admit, when I first heard the news, I thought it was the end of the world. With mocks and end of year exams coming up, everybody was stressed out. Since cases are rising every day, I felt that we really need to learn the ways to stay safe and occupied during lockdown, as if we aren’t, this could go longer than expected.

One thing I’ve been spreading around is probably the most important thing when going out: wear a mask. Disposable ones are good, but most likely not as effective as reusable cotton masks! They’re not harmful to the oceans as they don’t pollute the environment. Reusable cotton masks won’t hurt any wildlife and are super comfortable; I’ve made two so far, and they are definitely worth it.

We’ve all heard the Covid-19 announcements on staying safe, so I’ve also included some ideas on keeping you upbeat and your mental health top notch during lockdown.

• Stay on top of schoolwork: it is really important to complete your work, so you aren’t as stressed about your next zoom lesson, or whether your Wi-Fi goes out.

• Go outside: there’s probably something you’ve never seen before in your neighbourhood, so go and check it out! Even sit on your deck and just bathe in much needed sunshine!

• Socialise with your friends on social media: communicating with your mates during lockdown is a fun way to keep you to motivated during lockdown!

I am sure we will be back to school very soon. If we all stay safe during lockdown. I hope you have a great lockdown with exciting time while staying safe.

The Student Voice!

During a time like this, while parents, teachers and students are stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been difficult for everyone to cope with the changes that have taken place recently.

But more importantly, staying safe is definitely the most important thing. Our teachers are currently teaching online through zoom and our students of ACG Sunderland have been able to cope with that too, by attending classes and learning from home.

This week, a few teachers and students were asked to participate in answering questions for a survey. The questions were about coping with learning and teaching from home and staying safe during this tragic pandemic. It’s a lot for some people to go through, and we want to know how people are doing and what they’re doing to stay safe. As a result, nearly all our teachers and students answered that they are coping with virtual classrooms very well.

We appreciate to all the teachers and students who’ve participated in our survey.

We will continue to use the entrance at number 44 Patiki Road to access our shop site at number 40 Patiki road until further notice as the site works are taking longer than anticipated– note access is very clearly sign posted to avoid any confusion.

We are taking good quality uniform items for the second-hand shop. Blazers must be dry cleaned.

Lost Property All lost property can be found by the Second-Hand Uniform Shop.

For your best interest, please name all clothing, lunch boxes and drink bottles as we will return all named items to the students homeroom teacher.
