WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term One, Week Nine, 26 March 2021 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland It has been another very settled period of teaching and learning with very few interruptions this week.

Again, if you did miss an appointment to see a staff member during our Parent/Teacher interviews last week then don’t hesitate to make direct contact with the staff members concerned and organise a mutually convenient time to catch up.

There were two cluster swimming competitions held this week, one for the Upper Primary School and one for the Lower College.

I know Mr Baker was very pleased and impressed with the quality of swimming at the Primary event on Wednesday with Sunderland making all the finals and placing numerous times.

The College event took place on Thursday and at the time of beginning my newsletter I did not have the results – photos and results to come from Mrs Tyler.

On Monday afternoon we were finally able to celebrate our Scholars from our superb 2020 Cambridge Examinations. Mr Stephens and I were so very proud and delighted to acknowledge the wonderful successes our 2020 scholars had produced. There was a good number of students who gave up time from their University studies too, to come and receive their awards and partake in the celebrations.

Sunderland Table Tennis Team One two. One two. A rhythmic crack, hollow and sharp, echoes as the ball strikes their rackets and the crowd, entranced drawing closer to the spectacle. A single white dot whizzed from one side to another without rest, all while spinning at a dizzying rate. However, Henry lashes out with his finishing move, pitching the ball high above the other side. An unorthodox move that any coach would faint at the sight of; panic visibly swells in the opponent’s chest and misses the shot. Henry finishes 2-1 and wins the entire grade for Sunderland!

Table tennis is a sport that demands mastery in power and control, dexterity and flexibility, and tactical prowess. It's a sport favouring large school rosters and when competing in tournaments against these teams with years of experience, it can be hard to stay afloat. However, the club’s seemingly meagre three teams have recently found success in tournaments and winning back to back titles in their respective grades. This is unprecedented for any new team such as Sunderland and with mostly novice players to boot, it naturally piqued my interest in their success story.

Firstly, I sat down with the current captain of the table tennis team and three time MVP, year 12 Henry Luo. He started playing table tennis at age 7. “We (him and his dad) used to do rallies together school in our garage.”

“Because I love playing table tennis, simple as that. When I first joined, I had no intention of trying to top our grade or anything grand like that, I just wanted to smash the ball and feel the adrenaline rush. “ “Truthfully, the more you play, the more wins you get, the hungrier you are for more wins; it's just human nature. I would train myself during the week and during lunchtimes. However, I never saw them as training really, I just wanted to play just like you would want to play a game of handball at lunch.”

“I trained by myself for maybe the first term, but after that, we started doing group training since everyone enjoyed the idea of that. Now we have weekly training sessions at either my house or at a venue I organize. I also play with everyone during tournament day as well to make sure everyone is good to play. Again, we keep to the principle of if we aren’t enjoying it, there is no point in doing the taxing work.”

Henry was the star player, a monster in singles and clinical during doubles, but it doesn’t take one good player to bring an entire roster of three teams to success. Henry has been a major cogwheel in the background workings of Sunderland’s Table tennis tea87ydem, from organising training and coaching younger players, to playing with them on tournament day and steeling their nerves. I’ve also noticed Henry’s general enthusiastic demeanour towards table tennis, he’s an enthralling player to learn or play against. An avid team is a good team to be.

Next, I took the opportunity to chat with some of the players about their experience in the club unbeknownst to Henry.

Year 12 Zayde Harford dappled his feet into Table Tennis a couple of months ago and decided to officially join table tennis this year. Here’s his experience as a greenhorn.

“I personally joined because I saw Henry and other players playing during lunchtimes. I found it really engrossing to watch and decided to just try. I was appalling at the game. However, even though I was really bad, I was having so much fun playing with everyone. After going to a couple of tournaments to see what it was like, I decided to take the leap of faith and join. My mother was understandably baffled, ‘Why not just play real tennis!’ I distinctly remember her saying, but 3 months later I have yet to regret my decision. Training is always super flexible and I learn so much from Henry as well as the other experienced players. At the end of the day, I enjoy playing it with my friends. I can’t wait for the tournaments to start.”

Playing with Henry since day 1, Anton Vrodoljak is a year 11 who shares his extensive experience at tournaments and what it's like starting from the bottom.

“When Henry and I first joined, we were kind of like rivals. I knew he was better than me but I could never stop finding ways to beat him. Competing for most wins in a row, most smashes, coolest shots, silly things like that, but I got so good because of that. The easy way to win at tournaments is to work hard. Play, play, play. Sometimes there have been upset loses but we as a team bounce back. Sometimes we blunder during a game, whiffing an easy shot or plain missing the ball, but its not the first blunder that gets you, it’s the second. The most important I skill I have learned from Table tennis is tenacity! I started in C grade and now we are playing in the A grade against all these massive schools. I know we are going to struggle at the start, but once we get our rhythm going, we off to the moon.”.

Through my investigations, I have found that the Sunderland Table tennis team is one that prides itself on being enjoyable and full of vigor. The people reflect this motto like a mirror, and with such a great captain, I’m starting to understand how this club can stand up to giants in their sport. Determination gets you a long way, but have fun while doing so or you’re never going to make it far.

Notices New Violin Teacher - Fiona Haughton

I am very pleased to announce that we will be having a new violin teacher start at ACG Sunderland.

Teaching is something she is very passionate about. She holds a Bachelor of Music, with first class honours, from Victoria University in Wellington. She also has a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of British Columbia. She has played in a number of professional music organisations such as The NZ Symphony Orchestra and the NZ Opera Company.

Mrs. Haughton has a great deal of experience as a violin instructor. She uses the Suzuki method as it is a well-proven and successful teaching pedagogy.

Her lessons will be on a Monday at Sunderland, starting the 15 March. Lessons will take place during the school day.

If you are interested in your child taking violin lessons, then please do contact Mrs. Haughton directly to set up a time. mfhaughton@gmail.com At reception, there is a pamphlet entitled “Itinerant Music Lessons”. This form should be completed and given to Mr. O’Connor (via reception) before lessons start. This document outlines the costs and expectations that go with instrument Music lessons at our school.

I would also like to let parents know that we have four, good quality, full sized violins that are available to be borrowed.

There is no rental fee for these.

I do hope a large number of students will be keen to take up violin lessons with Mrs. Haughton. We are very lucky to have her as our new string teacher.
