WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Twelve, 14 April 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland We made it! We got through 12 weeks of teaching and learning here at Sunderland with complete continuity of our education processes.

We did not need to shorten days, send students home or deviate from our plan. I am so very proud of our staff who not only managed themselves but also took on the responsibility of managing near on 700 students, so everyone kept safe during this Omicron outbreak. Yes, there were staff and students who did contract the virus but it would appear that we did not have transmission here at Sunderland and our health & safety protocols stood up well.

I wish to acknowledge all the work Sonya Eldridge continues to all with regards to our Covid Management Plan. She really has done a superb job.

At the same time as carrying on with our teaching and learning, we have still been able to continue with our holistic education philosophy with sports, music, drama, service, and leadership all continuing.

I wish to also thank the Fleming House who have managed to raise $1,856.90 for the New Zealand Surf Lifesaving – with raffles, donations, and a mufti day too. Well done to their leadership team.

Our new Preschool is Open!

Sue Revill – our Preschool Manager and her team of staff successfully transitioned all the existing little people across from our old centre into the purpose built, state of the art centre.

The new centre is working out extremely well with parents and students alike really enjoying everything on offer.

We will start Term Two with 50 children aboard – only leaving 20 places left. If you are keen on taking a spot please speak with Sue Revill or Linda Storey our Enrolments Manager to secure a spot.

In Term Two, we will be implementing a new traffic management system that will give more parks at drop off and pick up but will require some changes in your routines too.

More details to come with this change.

Miss Cass Sealy is leaving at the end of this term to return to her old school in East Auckland. We thank her for her commitment to Sunderland over this time and certainly wish her well in her role.

Thank you again for all your support this term, have a wonderful two weeks off and I look forward to seeing many of you at Athletics Day on the 3rd May.

Kia Ora e te wahanu What can I say about our tamariki this week? We had an amazing and exciting first week in our new building. Our tamariki are overwhelmed with a variety of new resources to play with and so as the teachers. We are still settling in, getting to know our new environment and getting familiar with the very big space that we did not have before.

We would like to welcome Gilbert, Luca, Brinda and Marius and their whanau who just joined our Centre this week, and our new teachers Tara and Katie.

We hope you have a wonderful and safe Easter weekend and looking forward to seeing you back here on Tuesday.

Debate Club

ACG Sunderland attended its first debate of the season on Monday night.

ACG Sunderland 1 vs. St Kent's 5 - ACG Negative Winner: ACG Sunderland (by 20 points).

ACG Sunderland 2 vs. Massey 1 - ACG Affirmative Winner: Massey (ACG loss by only 8 points!)

We are so proud of the teams. For everyone it was their first debate ever!

The students had heaps of fun, and prepared very well for their debates.

Table Tennis Play Offs – ACG Sunderland Come Out on Top After a busy summer season playing against three other West Auckland schools, ACG Sunderland prove themselves to be amazing in the end-of-term play offs.

On the 8th of April, all players were entered into a knockout play off, at the Waitemata Table Tennis Stadium in Sunnyvale. Competition was tough, especially against Premier League players from Liston College. But the Sunderland players never let that stop them, and put up a good battle, taking the matches into long fights for sets.

Kevin Fang beat Hobsonville Point’s top player, Keith to the final by 2 points, in a tight test of both their abilities. It was a nail-biting event.

Nicholas Qin lost out to Liston; but beat Auckland International College by being a nimble player and wielding the paddle like a champ.

Our youngest player: Lucas proved himself by having his own unique playing style. He is very agile and really knew how to catch the other players off guard.

Of the four finals, we were in three and won three. The results were: Nicholas Qin (ACG) – 1st in A grade plate singles Kevin Fang (ACG) – 1st in B grade singles Lucas Yao (ACG) – 1st in B grade plate singles

Head Boy twice in a row, and well-known journalist visits Sunderland Three words: entertaining, engaging and enticing.

First thing Monday on the last week of Term One, Alex Chapmen was kind enough to come present about his experience at Sunderland, how he became a journalist, alongside providing general advice, and teaching us about journalism features, as it fits nicely into the AS Language course.

In 2011, Alex graduated from a (not so small now) school called ACG Sunderland. During his presentation, Chapmen described his experiences in sport, what subjects he took but most importantly the main struggles of high school; what to do next.

Like most students, Alex wasn’t sure of what he was going to pursue. He knew that he had talent in public speaking and had major interest in journalism, so he started working at a sports radio station, starting behind the scenes, and working his way up. Alex stated that the pros of working there were “The crew is like one big family”, “being able to interview famous sport celebrities”, and “watching the sport competitions extremely close.”

If there was anything Alex wanted us to take from his presentation, it would be the tips. The main tips he believed was to ‘take risks’, ‘say yes to more opportunities given to us’, and to ‘be kind’. He taught us that being kind led people to trust him and was the main reason why he could start working at NewsHub. Alex was a very clear presenter, and valued speaking from his own voice, as that’s what journalism is: “finding your voice” and sticking to it. He wasn’t afraid to use slang that he was used to, in fact, the use of occasional profane words engaged us, as it was nothing we were used to. I’m convinced to say that on behalf of the AS class, we were very lucky and grateful to have him come in and visit. Humorous and inspiring.

COVID – A Summary In 2020, the world faced a big challenge. COVID started spreading in the world, which affected everyone worldwide. The never-ending torture started, which went through 2021 and now in 2022.

COVID has changed the lives of many people and the world is not the same as before. Many people lost their family and friends; many faced financial hardship. It has caused lots of stress and anxiety to some people.

Schools were closed around the world. The school closures were one of the most disappointing decisions, mainly because children could not meet friends for a long time. On the other hand, many children had a good time at home in lockdown, while saving the world by doing nothing, and by nothing, I mean staying home, watching TV, and chilling.

Then some adults found a way to interrupt happiness, and online learning was introduced. All of the classes were started again via Zoom and Teams; But all of this happened for the better.

Restaurants and take-aways were closed, and we got a chance to see the cooking of our parents. We may have missed fast food, but home cooking resulted in some positive habits such as, spending more time with family, eating healthier and spending less money.

Initially, all children were exempted from masks, and we enjoyed the moment. We felt more privileged without a mask but it did not last long and the age limit to wear a mask was reduced.

Wearing a mask is very annoying but helps to protect from COVID. Vaccination age was also reduced, so children had to get injections which some may think are painful; but are very necessary to protect us from COVID. Overall, COVID has had a bad impact on most of our lives, but it has also brought positive environmental effects and overall pollution was reduced due to less traffic and manufacturing in lockdowns. Millions of people were locked in, but the natural world outside has continued to rumble on. COVID is starting to fade away with borders opening and cases decreasing. Hopefully everyone who had COVID are ok and thank you to all the teachers who made hybrid and online lessons possible.

Lost Property We are accumulating an awful lot of lost property – uniforms, drink bottles, lunch boxes, shoes etc.

Please ensure that ALL your child’s belongings are labelled with their name.

It can become very expensive having to replace uniforms, lunch boxes and drink bottles on a regular basis.

Sundry Purchases If you are purchasing sundry items from Reception like calculators, badges etc, can you please ensure your child has the correct money as we do not have change at reception.

We are unable to put these on your school account.

2nd Uniform Shop A reminder that the 2nd hand uniform shop is no longer sending cheques out or able to pay into your school account for uniform items sold on behalf. If you know you have uniform items in the shop to sell, please go to reception or ring the school with a bank account number to deposit the funds.

Lunch Orders ACG Sunderland is a water only school and Lunch Orders will not provide any other drinks/ice blocks. If any drink or ice block items are ordered, this will be substituted for another item/s that is of the same value.

Massey Cross Country Registrations Massey Cross Country Running is the best way to keep fit during winter!! Fun runs, relays, and races are on Saturdays at 3:00pm at Moire Park Massey and interclub events held at other venues around Auckland. The season starts at the end of March and continues to the end of September.

Cross Country is for kids aged 7-16 years old. Distances start at 2km for U8's and U10s, 3km for U12 and U14 and 4km for U16.

Adults can run too.

There will be a 2km time trial at Moire Park on Saturday’s 16th and 23rd April at 3.00pm starting at the Massey Athletics Club on Granville drive Massey.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.

The Tania Dalton Foundation are delivering the Boost programme in the next school holidays at Avondale College. This programme is aimed at year 7&8 girls that attend West Auckland schools and is Free to attend. The programme runs for 3 days, Tuesday April 26th to Thursday April 28th so week two of the holidays, they provide the girls with a safe and supportive environment to try a few different sports and activities to build confidence, connection and opportunity. Whānau can register the girls themselves via online registration.

Tutorials are offered to students as a means to give extra support and guidance. The key to tutorials is be prepared.

Examples of what you could get help with and what you should bring but not limited to • • • • •

Review past exam questions Specific questions related to the course Practice essays Questions on your coursework Teacher is reviewing a specific area you are not confident in.

The key is being specific, remember staff like it when you are proactive. The tutorial is the opportunity to look closely at the requirements of a piece of work with the guidance of a staff member.

KASC is offering an after school care fee discount to all the Sports players who will stay in KASC from Monday to Friday.
