Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland A massive congratulations to Mrs Susan Sherwen, who successfully completed her planned swim across Lake Taupo this week. I understand the distance was over 40km and she completed the distance in just over fourteen hours.

For those of you who are not aware, Susan was a Mathematics and Science teacher here at Sunderland until her retirement at the end of the 2019 academic year.

Congratulations to Susan.

I know the children in the Primary school have really enjoyed the Life Education Trust caravan this week. They have been studying body language, bullying and Science topics too.

The feedback has been very positive from the educator.

ACG Sunderland takes students' health and safety very seriously and we understand the degree of uncertainty and anxiety which some students and parents might be experiencing at this time. The purpose of this communication is inform you and provide you with reassurance that the school has measures in place to minimize the likelihood of transmission of COVID-19 and to address any further developments should they eventuate. It is also to alleviate concern and to counter misinformation circulating through social media and the community.

Please note that ACG Sunderland continues to receive regular updates from the Auckland Regional Public Health Service and the Secretary for Education. Both agencies are keeping schools well informed about COVID19. We are following their best practice recommendations and planning protocols.

ACG Sunderland has measures in place to keep students and staff safe, including having hand sanitizer available in classrooms and corridors, implementing additional cleaning services, screening all visitors with specific health and travel questions, and having close monitoring of student and staff health. Further to this, the Ministry of Education recommends "it continues to remain that the best thing to do is to practice good preventative measures, particularly good hygiene: • Washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after eating as well as after attending the toilet • Covering coughs and sneezes with clean tissues or with an elbow • Putting used tissues in the bin • Encouraging staff and students to stay home if they are unwell.”

In the unlikely event that ACG Sunderland is instructed by local medical Officers of Health and the Ministry of Health to close, please be assured that our planning and preparation for school closure is well underway. The education and welfare of our students is our primary concern and our staff are advanced in their preparation to continue the curriculum through a range of online tools. This will include online resources and daily lessons.

Please rest assured that we continue to take this matter most seriously. We are receiving regular updates from the Auckland Regional Public Health Service and the Secretary for Education and we will be following the directives of these two agencies in determining our response. We will keep the school community informed as updates become available and should there be any change to the current day-to-day operation of the school.

Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers

The Duke Edinburgh’s Hillary Award AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND will continue to be offered to students at ACG Sunderland in 2020.

The Duke of Edinburg Award creates opportunities for our young people to learn a new skill (or develop an existing one), get physically active, give service to their communities, and take part in an adventure, the Award challenges young people to leave their comfort zones—and that's when the good stuff happens. They build self-confidence and greater resilience, helping to set them up for success in today's uncertain world, where they face more challenges than ever.

Open to anyone between the ages of 13 (going to turn 14 in 2018) to 25; regardless of gender, background or ability— young people design their own Award programmes, set their own goals and record their own progress. The only person they compete against is themselves, by challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is the world's leading youth achievement award. Proven to help with job and study prospects, it has transformed the lives of millions of young people since it first began in 1962.

The Award operates on three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold.

In order to achieve the Bronze Award, students must complete requirements in four sections: Skill, Physical Recreation, Service and Adventurous Journey. Silver and Gold Awards have a similar structure but the challenges step up at each level.

While there is a significant time commitment required to complete each section, many students are already involved in activities which meet the requirements for the Skills and Physical Recreation sections (e.g. learning an instrument, speech, playing in a sports team). Both of these sections require the student to show regular commitment for a minimum of 1 hour per week carried out in their leisure time for a period of 3 or 6 months.

The Service section involves assisting in the community with a regular commitment for a minimum of 1 hour per week carried out in their leisure time for a period of 3 or 6 months’ in a position such as voluntary work with young children, the elderly, a neighbour, a church etc.

The Adventurous Journey section will be co-ordinated by the school through an external provider. This requires the students to undertake training about being in the outdoors, they also need to complete a practice tramp and a qualifying tramp in order to have this section signed off. Students generally complete the Bronze award within six to twelve months of starting the award.

The website www.dofehillary.org.nz lists the requirements and a vast range of activities which are suitable for the various sections.

Students will use the Online Record Book (ORB) to record their activities and achievements. Award Leaders can use the ORB to manage their Participants' progress, and Assessors can use it to submit their reports.

Costs involved: Bronze or Silver Registration approx.$90, Gold Registration $115.

Two-day training for Adventurous Journey, Practice Journey and Qualifying Journey approx. $500 for all three components.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award is available to all 14–24 year olds, regardless of their background. The Award has three levels, each progressively more challenging.

BRONZE For those 14 years and over SILVER For those 15 years and over GOLD For those 16 years and over Participants are required to complete four sections at each level: Voluntary Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey. At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project.

The Award challenged me to reach outside my comfort zone, enabling me to do things I did not believe myself capable of. A highlight was the Gold Adventurous Journey as it challenged me both physically and mentally. The skills and values I have acquired throughout the course of this Award are the ones that will stick with me for life.
