Learner Profile of the Month Indonesian Teachers’ Day was a wonderful example of how our community can come together to celebrate and acknowledge special occasions.

Our parent community (led by our Community Group Year Level Representatives) did an amazing job of organising and hosting a generous morning tea for our primary and secondary teachers. Special thanks to Dewi Sumawijaya and Vera Sajian for creating a wonderfully decorated space (including a photobooth) for the morning tea.

Message from the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, The first semester of the 2019-2020 academic year was packed full of great learning, great initiatives and wonderful experiences for students, staff and families. Most importantly, we are building a strong community where we aspire to improve each day and strive to reach high standards. Although we have a lot of work ahead of us, we have a clear vision to become a school of creative, innovative problem solvers who are entrepreneurial and confident users of technology. Through creative learning experiences, we will pursue opportunities to excel in areas of interest and affect change in our local and global communities.

We are building a school where taking responsibility, acting courageously and exhibiting leadership are actively encouraged and rewarded. We are developing a school community that respects nature, indigenous culture and expressions of difference alongside unifying traditions.

Over the past month, we have worked to strengthen our school community by involving parents more and hosting events like “A Day in the Life,” “Math Night,” and “Secondary Learning Celebration.” These events provided a wonderful platform for parents to learn more about our curriculum and learning process and even gave parents a chance to participate in lessons and activities to learn first-hand.

Don’t forget that there have been some changes to the academic calendar.

We will now have the final Primary Assembly for Semester One on Friday, 13 December.

The ACG School Jakarta Community Group meeting has been re-scheduled.

This meeting will take place after the Primary Assembly on Friday, 13 December from 9.00am – 10.00am. At this meeting, the Community Group members will be discussing plans for the following upcoming events •

Don’t forget that our end of Term Two Assembly will be held at 2.00pm on Tuesday, 17 December in the gymnasium.

Over the past three days, our students in Years 7 – 10 have taken midyear examinations in core subject areas. These midyear examinations are not high stakes exams, but they do provide students with an opportunity to learn more about how they are progressing. Teachers and parents can also identify specific strengths and weaknesses and together, work with students to adjust goals for Semester Two and put a simple and clear improvement plan in action from 7 January, 2020. Congratulations to all students who have successfully worked through the examination session and special thanks to our teachers and supervisors for coordinating and running a smooth examination session.

As this is the final newsletter before semester break, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and commitment to ACG School Jakarta, and I trust that you will all enjoy the holiday break, travel safely and take advantage of spending quality time with family and friends. Message from the Vice Principal - Primary Dear Parents and Caregivers, November was another fun-filled and busy month! We began the month with our Halloween Costume Parade and Disco, and we all enjoyed dressing up and dancing to our favorite tunes. We welcomed Years 1-3 parents in for “A Day in the Life” and held our first-ever Math Night during the first full week of November. Parents supporting their children’s learning is so important for their future success. ACG School Jakarta is fortunate to have such a caring and supportive community.

Throughout the month, a few grade levels went on field trips connected to their units of inquiry. Learning happens beyond the classroom, as well as inside it. Field trips allow students to engage in new and interesting experiences, make connections with their learning, and meet new people in the community.

At the end of the month, we had our first Open Day of this school year, where prospective families visited the school to learn more about what an ACG education entails. Our student ambassadors were wonderful tour guides, as they showed prospective families around school and shared about their ACG experience. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time on Saturday to speak with prospective families. We appreciate your time and energy!

Lastly, the parent community really outdid themselves this week! Monday, 25 November was Indonesian Teacher’s Day. Our teachers were spoiled all day with notes and pictures from the students and a delicious spread of food for morning tea from the parents. Thank you all for your continued support. We are very lucky to have a community like you!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Math Night - Whole School Our Math Night at AGC School Jakarta turned out to be a huge success and was an evening filled with fun and hilarity. This event was a first and one that we hope to continue. Students from all years, Kindergarten to Year 13, were involved, and all appeared to enjoy the family fun atmosphere. There were Math games galore, countless competitions, and opportunities to strategize. Our senior students really got into the spirit of things when competing in the House Math Competition. During the event, students earned points for their House, with Geckos taking home the win by a margin of 4 points. Congratulations Geckos!

The Book Swap Event - Whole School The Library Heroes are always on the lookout for interesting and engaging ways to get the school community to engage in the love of reading. On Friday, 22 November, the Library Heroes hosted The Book Swap Event, where students were able to swap their used books with other students’ books, sharing their favourite books with others. As the day of the book swap approached, and the Library Heroes, other students, and parents were excited! After exchanging their books for coupons earlier in the week, students traded their coupons in for ‘new to them’ books. Everyone was excited to get some new books to read. Thank you to the Library Heroes for running a great event!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Teachers Learn, Too! - Whole School Did you know that teachers love to learn, too? Teachers at ACG School Jakarta are fond of learning through technology in order to support their teaching in class. Photo and video editing can be tough and time consuming if we aren’t sure of which tools to use or don’t know the basic skills. So, every Friday, the Library hosts a mentoring program where teachers can learn how to use simple photo and video editing software. Teachers empower themselves with new skills and learn to express their ideas and creativity through photos and videos.

Learner Profile of the Month Inquiry at the heart of learning Inquiry is at the heart of teaching and learning at ACG School Jakarta. Inquirers develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives (IBO, 2014). Students are often engaged in research activities at school and are encouraged to use the library and online resources in a way that helps them develop the qualities and characteristics of a lifelong learner and inquirer. We expect to see students:

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Open Day - Whole School Our Open Day on Saturday, 23 November was a very positive event with a number of families interested in enrolling their son or daughter to our school. We had wonderful support from our staff who volunteered their time to talk to prospective parents and showcase student work. We also had great support from our student ambassadors and parent volunteers who were kept very busy throughout the morning talking to families and sharing their own personal experiences of being a member of our wonderful community. Our next Open Day is scheduled for Saturday, 15 February and we would be delighted to see more teachers, parents and students volunteer their time to promote our school.

A Day in the Life Years 1 - 3 - Primary Thank you to all of the parents and family members who attended the “A Day in the Life� event for Years 1-3 earlier this month. During the event, parents experienced a reading and writing workshop, mathematics, and unit of inquiry lessons. Parents worked alongside their children to play educational games, participate in handson learning activities, and take part in the lessons. In addition to the classroom lessons, parents and students played together at recess and ate snack and lunch together. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we were excited that nearly all students’ parents attended. Thank you for participating in the event!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Scavenger Hunt - Primary Year 6 began their new unit, Where We Are in Place and Time, with a scavenger hunt around the school. This provocation connected perfectly to their Central Idea, “Exploration can lead to discoveries and new understandings.” Students worked together in their House teams to solve clues that would lead them to the next destination. Some of the clues were simple, but others were tricky and required them to use critical thinking skills to solve them. All had a great time on the ‘exploration’ and upon reflection, they stated that they can relate to how explorers don’t always have an easy journey. Congratulations to the Biawaks for finding the treasure first!

Kindergarten What a busy few weeks it’s been in Kindergarten! We have been delving further into our senses, focusing on ‘How we use senses to express ourselves’. The children used clay and a range of tools and materials to creative their own imaginative sculptures. We also became Kindergarten bakers, as we made our own bread rolls. We all agreed that these were delicious, and we are certainly going to do more baking in Kindergarten. We also went on a ‘sensory walk’ and carried out a taste test to find out what our favourite taste was. There seemed to be quite a class divide between who liked ‘sweet’ and who liked ‘salty’!

As we reach the end of Semester One, I just want to share how proud I am of all the students in my Kindergarten class. They never cease to amaze me with their ideas, interests, passions and motivation to take risks, share their ideas and lead their own learning is so many ways. I can’t wait to see what Semester Two brings!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Field Trip - Primary On 5 November, our Year 6 students went to XS Project (formerly known as Ffrash). The students observed the materials, processes and final results. The first group of students made their own personalised handmade bags using nothing but an old T-shirt and scissors. The second group of students experienced the process of cleaning, rinsing and drying the soap packets.

XS Project collects soap packets, hessian coffee bags, banners, plastic bags and other non-biodegradable plastic and re-crafts them into new products. The XS Project buys plastic materials from the Trash Pickers of Jakarta.

ACG School Jakarta donated some of our old monthly banners. Money from the sale of the handmade bags and other products goes back to local village families by sponsoring some of Trash Pickers’ children to go to school and higher learning.

The Year 6 students loved the experience, and more importantly, they learned a lot about reusing, recycling, upcycling and recrafting…from ‘trash to treasure.’

Year 3 Provocation - Primary For our sensory provocation into our new unit of inquiry, ‘Who We Are’, Year 3 students experienced different religions with open-mindedness and using all of their senses: through the sounds of chanting, praying and singing; through touching the rich textures of special religious artefacts; through smelling incense; and through observing and appreciating images and holy books. We encouraged Year 3 to see, think and wonder as they walked through our classrooms.

It was an amazing experience for us all! Year 3 shared their provocation with Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 students, Mr Hutchinson, and our religious teachers who also enjoyed the immersive experience.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Primary Halloween Disco On Friday 1 November, there was a Halloween disco party in the gym. 133 kids came to the disco and we raised 5,420,000IDR. We donated the money to Kampoeng Kids and the refreshments cost 1,050,000IDR. We had to raise 3,500,000IDR to support the Kampoeng Kids education. Each chose two songs for the Halloween disco. The student council danced with the other students and encouraged them to dance. We got to wear costumes the whole day! Aahana said, “The Halloween disco was brilliant and we organised it really well.” Additionally, Qaira said, “I was surprised students paid more money than it actually cost. Thank you everyone.”

We are very proud to be student council members and represent the school. We also are looking forward to making the school better with our environmental projects like our waste reduction.

Whodunnit! – An Ongoing Murder Investigation - Secondary In Year 7 English students are in the middle of an investigation into the murder of the famous literary figure, Victor Frankenstein, who was found dead last week in one of our classrooms. The suspects are all ‘friends’ of the victim, namely Jane Eyre, Bob Cratchit, Mrs Johnstone, Lady Macbeth, Hamlet and Crooks.

Students interviewed Inspector Lot during a press conference this week and will use their notes to write a newspaper report.

As the investigation continues, we will explore non-fiction text, and hopefully get to the bottom of this hideous crime!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Secondary Learning Celebration On 15 November, ACG School Jakarta hosted its 2nd Annual Secondary Learning Celebration, an opportunity to celebrate some of the excellent work produced by our students this year, and to learn a little bit more about how secondary classes are taught.

Our Year 11 students shared their Exploratorium Projects. The Exploratorium is a year-long independent piece of work. Students began by brainstorming personal areas of interest, developing a suitable research question, conducting research and writing an essay. Following this, they were tasked with creating a ‘product’ of some sort to further demonstrate their learning. A variety of products were produced, including websites and books.

Upon entering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), our Year 12 students were introduced to one of the core components, CAS. CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, Service and during the Secondary Learning Celebration, the Year 12 students shared some of their experiences with CAS. Sport team participation, public performances and voluntary reading programmes were some of the many highlights. We’re looking forward to what else this dynamic year group gets involved with!

The Year 13s exhibited a different facet of the IBDP – the Group 4 Project. The Group 4 Project challenges students to work collaboratively in small groups to identify, research and present their findings surrounding a particular area of concern. Our groups looked at polluted Jakarta waterways, health and safety of bug sprays and the sinking of Jakarta. Each group looked at their chosen topic through each of the different scientific disciplines – Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Sports Science.

Parents were invited to participate in specially designed lessons. Classes in Science, Mathematics, English, Design Technology, Information Technology in a Global Society and Physical Education were offered by our staff to show parents how learning takes place in the secondary school. Teachers led the parents through tasks and activities, modeling approaches that are used on a daily basis with students. Many parents expressed how different school is now from when they attended, with a much greater emphasis on collaboration and reflection. We’re looking forward to offering more parent classes in the future.

The Secondary Learning Celebration was a great way for us to come together and share a little bit about what we do, who we are as a school and the superb work done by our students. We’re already looking forward to next year’s instalment of the Secondary Learning Celebration!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Secondary Learning Celebration Thank you to all participants brave enough to accept our ‘Design challenge’ during our Secondary Learning Celebration. It was a very enjoyable morning, mainly due to the fact that everyone was prepared to get involved and be open-minded and take risks.

The Secondary Learning Celebration was a great opportunity to show what our students do in the classrooms.

There were certainly many of you demonstrating a competitive spirit! As a result, all passed with flying colours!

Now for the bad news... students have embarked on their first major task and because of parent success, guess who they will be asking to help with their homework.

Imagine being given the opportunity to become a student again; well for a morning, ACG parents opted to become students and get back into the classroom. They became Middle School Math students, and this time it was a little different, as on this occasion they experienced Math being taught through enquiry, or as some Parents reflected, allowing students to discover concepts for themselves. Many of the activities involved small group discussion, as discussion assists with building understanding, and some tasks were worked on collaboratively. Parents now understand the everyday reality of learning Math in Middle School, and they enjoyed their experience.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Secondary Learning Celebration Recently, at the Secondary Learning Celebration, IBDP students in Years 12 and 13 had the opportunity to showcase their CAS programmes. The students created displays highlighting their various experiences in the creativity, activity and service strands. Every year there are themes, strands or specific activities that stand out and become popular among the DP students. This year students have become very interested and engaged in providing mentorship to the younger students at ACG. Several of the senior volleyball players have volunteered to serve as assistant coaches for the junior teams and are using this as CAS experiences in both the service and activity strands. This has been a great success, as they have been sharing their experiences with the younger players, modelling the skills, and providing a great deal of assistance to the head coaches. Some other students are offering tutoring services in Science, Math and English. They are working with students at the IGCSE, lower secondary and primary levels, helping our second language learners and other students with their overall skills and with exam preparation. Activity experiences through the ACG athletics programme have also been very popular.

There have been many students using senior volleyball, soccer and basketball as CAS, which has encouraged many of our students to get involved in sport at ACG, who might not have otherwise. Well done to the IBDP students on their efforts so far in CAS and keep up the good work!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Sports - Secondary November has been another busy month for sports at ACG. During the first weekend of the month, the senior boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams travelled to ACG’s first ASEAN Sports and Activities Conference (ASAC) tournament. It was held at Concordia International School in Hanoi, Vietnam, and there were eight teams from international schools in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam taking part. The players and the coaches were excited to visit Vietnam, as for many of them, it was their first time in the country and in the city of Hanoi. The team stayed in the “Old Quarter”, which is in the centre of the city. This allowed for many cultural sightseeing opportunities during the down time of the tournament. However, the most exciting part of the trip was the games. There was some very tough competition and both teams played the best ASAC had to offer during the first two days, as ACG was in the strongest pool. During the final day, the Wolves were victorious, with both teams winning against VIN School Times City, Vietnam. In the end, the boys took sixth place and the girls took seventh. All agreed that it was a tremendous learning experience to take part in such a well organized and competitive tournament.

The players and coaches enjoyed all aspects of the trip and are already talking about next year.

November also marks the start of season two of sports at ACG with offerings in Junior Volleyball, U10 JSFL and U12 JSFL Soccer, Orcas Swim Team, Senior Basketball and the Saturday Development Program. The registration and turn out for these teams has been fantastic with well over one hundred student-athletes participating in the various codes. The volleyball teams are taking part in the Jakarta Middle School Sports Association (JAMISSA) league and have already played their first tournaments on 2 November and 30 November at Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS). Both teams are well positioned for the finals night, which will be held at JIS on Friday, 6 December. Another piece of exciting news is that both the U10 and U12 Soccer teams made the A division of the JSFL league this season. This is the top division in Jakarta for youth soccer; congratulations to the players and coaches from both squads. Finally, the senior basketball teams are underway with practices and getting ready for their season and upcoming ASAC tournament, which will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from 14 to 16 February. Games will begin the first week of December, with the first away game at SIS BV on 2 December. Good luck to all our student-athletes and coaches in season two, and a big thanks to the parent community for their ongoing support.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta The Arts - Secondary What happened? November sped past with even more gusto than October!

In Art and Design (Y10 and 11), students are busy learning how to manipulate the Elements and Principles to convey meaning, whilst in Y12, our young creatives are moving towards completing of their ‘City Dwellers’ pieces.

Y13 continue to build their portfolios ready for the big submission in March! We even had a real-life anime character invade our space to take over the green-screen!

As pointed out by the well-known artist/inventor/incurable problem-solver Leonardo da Vinci, “Time abides long enough for those who make use of it”.

Lost and Found

Many parents have indicated that they would like to volunteer and help out in the Primary classrooms. We have opportunities for parents to come and read with individual students or with a small group of students in the classrooms. We have collected a large number of lost and found items over the past 6 weeks and would like to return these items to their owners. A small group of parents have kindly volunteered to help return the items to students throughout the remainder of this week during morning and lunch breaks. A table of lost and found items was set up on Wednesday – Friday THIS week in the cafeteria. Items not claimed by Friday, 29 November will be donated to a charity. Renewal of Car Registration: Parents should complete the online form in order to receive their new Car Pass for the 2019/2020 academic year.

Parents as Learners

ID Card Registration:

Parents are encouraged to visit this section of our Information Portal to learn more about upcoming parent workshops and learning opportunities.

For new domestic staff or other family members who haven’t received an ID card, please visit this section and complete the relevant form.

Student Responsibility

Transport:

It is the responsibility of the student to arrive at school fully prepared for the day’s activities. We need parents to support us in establishing expectations and encourage students to be independent, responsible students. Students who arrive to school without personal items (shoes, books, swim gear, library bag, homework, etc.) should not call home and request parents, drivers, or domestic helpers to deliver items during the day.

Uniforms: We now have an online uniform order system and would like to encourage parents to use this online service. Payment can be made easily by bank transfer, credit card or cash.

Vehicle Access Only registered vehicles with an ACG School Jakarta car pass are permitted to enter the school grounds.

Students / Parents arriving to school during drop off and pick up times in taxis or app-requested vehicles will be required to drop off / pick up outside of the main gate.
