Introduction Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic experiences that occur in childhood and are remembered throughout adulthood. These experiences range from suffering verbal, mental, sexual and physical abuse, to being raised in a household affected by domestic violence, hostile parental separation or parental mental illness, alcohol or drug abuse or incarceration. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Support Hub has been established to help tackle ACEs. It will help create the environment for change and support individuals, communities and organisations to help create an ACE aware society. The overall vision of Wales as a world leader in preventing, mitigating and tackling ACEs.
Prevent ACEs from occurring in children’s lives Support early intervention when children are experiencing ACEs to minimise their impacts Build resilience in adults who have experienced ACEs to stop them being passed on through generations.
One of the ACE Support Hub’s goals is to develop knowledge and skills among professionals. An ACE Skills and Knowledge Framework has been developed which describes the knowledge and skills the workforce need to be ACE-Informed, ACE-Skilled and ACE-Influencers.
ACE-Informed All workers with direct contact with people (including colleagues, service users, clients, patients, members of the public) who may have experienced ACEs have the knowledge and skills required to be ACEinformed.
ACE-Skilled Frontline workers with regular contact with people (providers of services/support to the public who may have experienced ACEs) have the knowledge and skills required to be ACEskilled.

ACE-Informed people understand what ACEs are and their impact across the life course. They understand how to communicate effectively and know when to seek advice and support.

Sector: Education – Primary Schools Title of training: (Session 1) ACE Awareness Training Overview A 3-hour long presentation with attached trainer notes that raises the awareness of ACES and the findings from the Welsh study. This training can be delivered during a half-day INSET session for all school staff. Who will benefit? The training is relevant for anyone working within the school setting. Learning outcomes Introduction to ACEs, related trauma and impact across the life course An understanding of how we can all respond to ACEs Programme outline It is recommended that a school readiness tool is completed prior to the training. Subsequent training includes: ACE-informed practice - Recognising trauma, responding appropriately, developing resilience and PATH approach to becoming an ACE-Informed School. Delivery mechanisms Materials available to schools on Welsh Government’s Hwb Digital Learning for Wales. Trainer notes should be used to aid delivery and ensure key messages are presented. This is a 2.5 hour session delivered by 2 EP’S. Who will benefit? The training is relevant for anyone working within the school setting. Learning outcomes To increase confidence in responding to individuals ACE needs: By building on the approaches we use with our children to develop an ACE informed school By continuing to prioritise our own well-being and resilience as school staff Programme outline Action plan to be devised by the school after all 3 sessions are complete. This can form part of the School Improvement Plan for wellbeing. Healthy schools coordinators will be able to support schools to achieve the aims from the plan. Proceeding on from the training schools should consider: Resources to follow with suggested lesson plans for Health and Wellbeing. Embed ACE Informed Practice throughout the whole school ethos. Continue to revisit the Action Plan and evaluate current systems. Delivery mechanisms This training forms part of a 3-session programme. It provides information around the elements of a PIE, considers what roles leaders have in each of these elements and explores the challenges and opportunities becoming PIE brings. The course is reflective and provides an opportunity for delegates to consider where you and your organisation are in relation to the elements of PIE and knowing of what to do next. Who will benefit? The training is relevant for leaders within the housing sector. Learning outcomes Understand what it means to be psychologically informed, as an individual, a manager, a leader, a team and an organisation. Develop ideas about how to implement or amplify key components of a PIE into your work and organisation. Develop or affirm your understanding of reflective practice for effective working. Develop ideas and understanding how working in a psychologically informed way can help achieve your work/team/organisational objectives. Overview This 3 hour course provides an introduction to ACEs and the power of sport in preventing, mitigating and tackling ACEs Who will benefit? The training is relevant for coaches and anyone working in the sports sector. Learning outcomes Increase understanding of ACEs Increase understanding of the role of the coach in relation to ACES Learn about the role of the coach as a “safe pair of hands” Increase understanding of the impact of vicarious trauma and the importance of self-care Programme outline This course has been developed by the ACE Support Hub Wales in collaboration with Gwent Community Psychology Team, Sports Wales and an expert task and finish group with representatives from across the sports sector in Wales.
