KELLY SWANSON Director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences

Dr Swanson is a recognized leader in nutrition and nutrigenomics, testing how diet influences the gut microbiome and host health He focuses on testing the effects of dietary fiber, prebiotics, and probiotics on intestinal health in pets and people. He is recognized as a scientist on the cutting edge, applying new approaches to data collection and analysis. His work has been supported by over $26 million from pet and human food industries, commodity groups and the National Institutes of Health. He has trained over 50 graduate students and postdocs and published over 265 papers.

Kelly is also an outstanding instructor in the Department of Animal Sciences, Division of Nutritional Sciences, and College of Veterinary Medicine He has taught over 3,300 students in nearly 70 courses and has made it to the “List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students” 35 times. He was recently named to a five-year term as Director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences. He also contributes to many campus committees, professional societies and editorial boards.

Academicdress,consistingofcap,gown,andhood,originatedaboutthetwelfthcentury,andwas wornprimarilyforwarmth.Subsequently,thematerialofthegownandthelining,andshapeofthe hood,representedtheeconomic,social,andacademicstatusofthewearer.

IntheUnitedStates,thegreatmajorityoftheacademiccostumesnowwornareinaccordancewith thegeneralprovisionsoftheIntercollegiateCodeof1895,whichwasrevisedin1932andagainin 1960.Underthiscode,thebachelor’sgownhaspointedsleeves,themaster’sgownhasoblongsleeves withanarcatthebottom,andthedoctor’sgownhasbell-shapedsleeves.Blackisthetraditional colorforgowns,althoughattheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaign,academicdresshasbeen designedspecificallyfortheInstitution:bluegownswithorangeaccentsandbluemortarboards.

Thebachelor’sandmaster’sgownsareuntrimmed.Thedoctor’sgownisfaceddownthefrontwith velvetandhasthreebarsofvelvetacrossthesleeves.Thefacingandbarsmaybeblackorblue,asis thecaseatIllinois,ormaybethecolorofthesubjecttowhichthedegreepertains.Thebachelor’s gowniswornclosed;themaster’sanddoctor’sgownsmaybewornopenorclosed.

Thebachelor’shoodis3feetinlength;themaster’s,31/2feet;andthedoctor’s,4feet.Hoodsare linedwiththeofficialcolororcolorsofthecollegeoruniversityconferringthedegree.AtIllinois,the liningisorangeandblue.Thecoloredvelvetborderofthehood,whichis2inches,3inches,and5 incheswideforthebachelor’s,master’s,anddoctor’sdegree,respectively,identifiesthefacultyor fieldofstudytowhichthedegreepertains.

ThemortarboardcapisstandardintheUnitedStates.Usually,alltasselsareblack,butwherethe bachelor’sgraduatesdonotwearhoods,asatIllinois,thecolorofthecaptasselindicatesthe departmentofstudy.Candidatesfordegreesweartasselsontherightfrontquadrantoftheircapsand movethemtotheleftfrontquadrantafterdegreesareconferred.Capsareconsideredapartofthe costumeandarecustomarilyremovedonlyduringaninvocationorbenediction,andthenbymen only.Theorangeandbluebraidedcordswornfromtheleftshoulderbybachelor’sgraduatessignify UniversityHonors.

TheJewelofOfficewornbythePresidentwaspresentedtotheUniversityofIllinoisAlumni Association.ItisemblematicoftheOfficeofthePresidentandiswornatallformalacademic ceremonies.Onthegoldcollar,alsowornbythePresident,areengravedthenamesofthePresidents oftheUniversityandtheiryearsofservice.Forallacademicpurposes,includingtrimmingsofdoctor’s gown,edgingofhoods,tasselsofcaps,andliningsofbanners,thecolorsassociatedwiththedifferent disciplinesareindicatedbelow.
