Noise Mitigation Shipyards, Ports and Vessels Acentech is a multi-disciplinary acoustics and vibration consulting firm. We are one of the oldest and largest organizations of its type with roots stretching back more than 70 years. We are an unequaled partners to governments, institutions, engineers, manufacturers, and architects worldwide. Our consultants are leading industry experts in environmental noise mitigation consulting: from predicting the noise and vibration impact of shipping and other transportation systems, to drafting and interpreting community noise ordinances. Acentech’s marine noise expertise includes vessel noise mitigation (quiet ship design) for U.S and Canadian government agencies, research, industrial and transportation vessels.

Noise Control Case Studies M/V Grey Lady IV Hy-Line Cruises, Hyannis, MA Acentech conducted a noise compliance study in 2020 for the M/V Grey Lady IV, a high-speed passenger catamaran that runs from Hyannis to Nantucket. Hy-Line Cruises had received several complaints about excessive noise from a resident close to Nantucket Island’s passenger terminal dock. Our study consisted of an on-board diagnostic survey, sound measurements on land, and a review of municipal noise ordinances for both Barnstable and Nantucket counties. During our noise compliance assessment, we measured sound from a nearby residential location. We performed a noise mitigation study using Cadna/A acoustic modeling software, which complies with international standard ISO 9613-2. Our final report generated several noise treatment options including an exhaust deflector, engine configuration options, ship muffler replacement, and dock placement.

Quieting Ships to Protect the Marine Environment Transport Canada Technical Workshop, London, UK In January 2019, Transport Canada hosted a technical workshop entitled “Quieting Ships to Protect the Marine Environment” at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London, UK. Around 140 subject-matter experts from around the world gathered at this event for two and half days. The purpose of the workshop was to identify the state of knowledge on quiet ship design, provide an opportunity for international collaboration, and exchange research ideas. Elevated anthropogenic underwater noise in the oceans has been a known issue since the early part of the 21st century, and marine biology researchers have determined that the increase in underwater-radiated noise has multiple negative impacts on various species of marine life. The technical program consisted of nine focused presentations addressing topics such as the impact of underwater noise on marine life, challenges in setting underwater noise limits, marine industry activities in controlling undersea sound from shipping, engineering of noise control treatments, and methods of ship noise prediction from hull and propeller.
