2020

On the cover The Ludwick Center for Spirituality, Cultural Understanding, and Community Engagement at the University of La Verne in California opened in November 2019. The center encourages community and understanding by providing a gathering space for students, faculty and the community to promote interfaith and cultural communication. Offices of Civic and Community Engagement, International Services and Engagement, Center for Multicultural Services, and Religious and Spiritual Life will all be located within the building.

The Center is a three-story building with a largely glass façade, presenting an inviting front to the campus. It incorporates a portion of the 1962 Brandt dormitory, converting the building to offices and classrooms. The Sacred Space opens to the meditation garden, and provides an inspiring location for spiritual reflection, concerts, lectures, yoga, and religious prayer services.

Acentech collaborated with the Steinberg Hart design team to provide the appropriate acoustical environment for this dynamic new building. A project triumph was the design of the circular Sacred Space. Curved wood panels were angled providing diffusion to disrupt the acoustical focusing aspects of a circular room and provide the appropriate level of acoustical absorption to control the room’s reverberation time.

2020 in Review

2020 — what a year. One year ago when I wrote my message for Reflections, we had no idea what was in store for us. Sadly, COVID-19 has touched our extended Acentech family as it has tragically touched so many, and we empathize with our colleagues who have lost friends and family.

Thankfully, we work in an industry that has been able to function during the pandemic. “Work from home” and video conferences became the norm for us as they have for our clients and partners. Many of the projects you will read about in Reflections were completed this year during these trying times. We have even innovated, finding new ways of collaborating across the digital void.

And as the nation grappled with urgent issues of social justice this year, we too have continued to invest in our own commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am proud of the way that our team has responded to the crises of this year — we have adapted, we have found ways to excel and to improve ourselves, and we will be all the stronger for it in the future.

Reflections is a celebration of the wonderful projects we have had an opportunity to be part of this year. And it is not just the projects — in many ways it is the collaboration with our clients that is the most rewarding. For that, particularly this year, we are most grateful. We have had to adapt to find “new ways” to do things, and our clients have been very supportive and helpful.

We at Acentech are looking forward to a much better year in 2021, and I hope and expect my letter next year will address a more “normal” 2021. To all of our clients and partners, we hope that 2021 is a year that brings you health, success, and more opportunities to collaborate.

STAFF NEWS NEW STAFF MEMBERS! Josh Brophy

Consultant (Acoustics) Joshua Brophy recently joined our Acoustics group, after interning for Acentech while working on his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from Boston University. Before Josh discovered Acoustics, he worked as a film archivist. He became interested in acoustics through his hobbies of music performance and recording. Josh is working on various projects in educational, commercial, and healthcare markets.

Jonathan Goodrich Marketing Specialist

Jonathan Goodrich was promoted to Marketing Specialist, after interning with Acentech for two semesters. He earned his B.S. in Marketing with a concentration in marketing research and brand management from Suffolk University in May 2020.

Jonathan supports our clients by creating qualification materials. He also works on a wide variety of marketing and PR initiatives, and monitors our digital analytics.

Allie Lam

Consultant (Acoustics) Allie Lam recently joined Acentech’s Acoustics group. She graduated from Tufts University in 2020, where she earned her B.S. in Music with a concentration in Acoustics and Music Technology, as well as a B.S. in Applied Mathematics. Allie is looking forward to working on the acoustics of performing arts spaces, and is delighted to have found a career path that combines her love of math, science and music.

AWARDS AND PROMOTIONS! Amanda Alcamo

Digital Marketing Manager Amanda was promoted to Digital Marketing Manager. She recently won a 2020 SMPS Boston New Member of the Year Award. Amanda was involved in the SMPS Marketers Make it Happen Video Series, all the way from pre-production to post. We’re very proud of her, and excited to see the results of her new endeavors for 2021! Amanda is a proud alum of Boston College, where she earned a BA in Communications & Political Science.

Jay Bliefnick

Senior Consultant (Acoustics) Jay was promoted to Senior Consultant. He earned his PhD degree in Architectural Engineering with a focus on healthcare acoustics from the University of NebraskaLincoln, where he also completed his MS in Architectural Engineering with a concentration in Acoustics. Jay consults on a variety of acoustic and noise control projects, employing his background experience in acoustical modeling and audio engineering.

Ethan Brush

Principal Consultant (Noise/Vibration) Ethan was recently promoted to Principal Consultant. His expertise includes technical projects with vibration, dynamic testing, and analysis for aerospace and defense applications, as well as studies at university research laboratories. Ethan earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maine, and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. In his spare time, Ethan plays baritone saxophone with the Saxyderms, a Boston-based all saxophone group.

Nick Dragoni Lab Manager

Nick was promoted to Lab Manager. He oversees the company’s considerable instrumentation lab, assists consultants with multiple projects in the field, and provides support to Acentech’s sound lab. Nick earned his Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology from UMass Lowell. In his spare time, Nick plays alto saxophone with the Saxyderms (along with colleague Ethan Brush).

John Lloyd

Senior Consultant (Acoustics) John was promoted to Senior Consultant. He provides consulting for architectural acoustics, HVAC systems noise and vibration control, and environmental acoustics consulting for educational, commercial, and residential projects. John earned a Master of Science in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University. John leads our NYC presence.

Sadie Maney

Business Development Manager Sadie was promoted to Business Development Manager, and recently won a 2020 Professional Women in Construction (PWC) 40 Under 40 Award. She is also Programs Director for SMPS Philadelphia; the Founder of the Philadelphia Chapter of WWIRE: Wellness for Women in Real Estate; and was also named New England Real Estate Journal Ones to Watch 2020. We are so lucky to have Sadie on our team!

SPOTLIGHT ON | Douglas Sturz, INCE Board Certified As one of Acentech’s longest-term employees and a former employee of our parent firm, Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), we are training our spotlight on Doug Sturz, recipient of the 2020 Laymon N. Miller Award for Excellence in Acoustical Consulting from the Institute of Noise Control Engineering-USA (INCE-USA).* Doug has been practicing as an acoustician for over 46 years, 43 of those at Acentech (formerly known as BBN), with a primary focus on architectural acoustics and noise/vibration control for mechanical systems in buildings. Over the years, laboratory, technology and hightech manufacturing buildings became one of Doug’s specialties, in particular the control of noise and vibration in facilities with ultra sensitive equipment.

Early in the days when the computer industry was building so many ultra-sensitive microelectronics facilities, he was very substantially involved in conceiving the fundamental configurations of the building, from the noise and vibration control standpoint.

“It was clear from an early point in life that I was going to do something connected to the built environment. I thought I wanted to be an architect, but I didn’t really have the creativity to do that from a blank sheet of paper. Wow, do I appreciate how architects can create new things, but I clearly had a more engineering mind; I needed to have a framework in which to create. In college I found Architectural Engineering which married science and engineering principals with architectural design. It was the framework that I was looking for to contribute to building projects, being guided by engineering concepts. I was all set to be a mechanical engineer upon graduation, to design HVAC systems for buildings, when my acoustics professor caught me in the hall and asked what I was planning after graduation and asked if I ever thought of working in acoustics. I said, “I don’t know, can you get a job in acoustics?” Over 46 years later I have never looked back­—it was the perfect marriage of the engineering of all those noise making systems in buildings that I had learned about, and acoustics. Even better was that I actually didn’t have to do the design of all those details, I just had to wave my arms and tell others what to do!

When people think of acoustics for buildings, they often automatically think of concert halls and auditoriums where the finishes and shaping of the room is clearly important, but it is also critical that the rooms be incredibly quiet (near the threshold of hearing) so that people can hear all the subtleties of the music. It is always exciting to work on such projects, but I have also found it to be just challenging to quiet the airflow to lab buildings where they are served by hundreds of thousands of CFM of air, and to do this without undue energy consumption to overcome the resistance of noise control elements in the system. You need to start with a system that is conceived to systemically minimize noise so that you don’t have to add excess noise control treatment.”

Every project is a new challenge with worthy objectives. To me, it did not matter the type of project— be it a lab, residential, commercial or theatre—each is worthy of the fullest, most thoughtful design effort.”

[It’s hard for all of us at Acentech to grasp, but Doug is planning to retire in 2021. We told him we would really miss him, so he promised to keep popping back... or did he?]

SPOTLIGHT ON | Virtual 3DListening® The rush of excitement as the sound begins, eyes widening with each design change, and then relaxing into our chairs with smiles — it’s always a delight to share 3DListening® (3DL) acoustic simulations with our clients.

2020 was a year of adaptation in many respects, and 3DL was no exception. Though we could not gather physically in our 3DL Studio, with its custom acoustics and over a dozen loudspeakers surrounding the listeners, we adapted our process to create a Remote 3DL experience for online meetings.

3DL’s power comes from immersion: a group of people meeting together, in the accurate soundfield of a space that is still in design.

To achieve this in an online format, we provide each participant with an identical headset, calibrate the audio content for this specific headset model, and present the audio unaltered by the online platform (typically Zoom). We also design the content to use the strengths of headset listening — detail and balance among sounds — and to overcome its limitations. For example, in headset listening, we judge the loudness of a cocktail party by our ability to understand the person speaking to us, rather than by feeling the loudness in our chests. We judge direction more by movement of sound sources than by static position.

And it’s been highly successful!

We look forward to the day, hopefully in 2021, when we can gather safely again. In the meantime, we now know that we can use 3DL to benefit our projects, even across the digital divide.

In a project that carefully balanced exceptional acoustics with a constrained budget, the 3DListening helped us through a rigorous process by which to make key decisions. In one of our most important convening spaces, separation from a busy urban street and verbal clarity were of utmost importance. Being able to talk through the advantages (performance) and disadvantages (cost, constructability) of various glazing assemblies created a consensus around the importance of a design upgrade for the sake of acoustical improvement. Design details, and abstract verbiage like “STC” became real concepts that the client quickly understood in a way that only the 3DListening could allow. This was the first project that we used 3DListening and we will surely use it in future projects.”

SPOTLIGHT ON | Pandemic Tent Design Prototype Paul Lukez and Tina Lee of Paul Lukez Architecture led an interdisciplinary team on a pro-bono project to develop COVID-19 testing and vaccination tents.

Acentech reviewed sound absorptive materials that might be suitable for this environment and discussed tradeoffs in acoustic performance, light transmission, and cleanability.

Acentech also participated in a Pandemic Tent presentation to the Metrowest STEM Education Network that was attended by the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, in October 2020.

From Paul Lukez Architecture: “In March 2020, the coronavirus pandemic strained Boston hospitals beyond their limits as numbers of new cases exploded, giving rise to pop-up drive-thru testing centers in mall parking lots. Tents typically used for this purpose were designed for weddings and social/recreational events, not COVID-19 testing. In reaction, PLA collaborated with colleagues, consultants, and builders to develop a better COVID-19 tent structure.

The tent’s parabolic profile and skin are designed to foster natural ventilation to protect patients from car exhaust and, to some degree, the virus itself. The tent is also very easy to erect; its accordion-like construction makes it easy to swiftly unload from a truck/van and unfold into position. Finally, its triangular structure offers greater stability, and the carrying of lateral loads, hence more patient safety.”

SPOTLIGHT ON | Reichhold Center for the Arts Acentech is pleased to be involved in the restoration and modernization of the University of the Virgin Islands Reichhold Center for the Arts, damaged by hurricanes several years ago.

After guiding the team to an acoustically favorable roof assembly, we were invited to assemble a team to address the overall design of the new Reichhold. The design team, led by Acentech, includes acoustics, audiovisual system, information technology infrastructure, electronic security; theatre planning and design (NextStage Design); and architectural design consulting (Paul Lukez Architecture).

Through a series of site visits and discussions with university leadership, faculty, and venue staff, we determined the needs of the venue users and the wide range of performers, who include symphony orchestras, gospel choirs, steel drum ensembles, ballet, jazz, and a wide range of popular music from around the world.

The Reichhold’s audiences have come to expect and enjoy excellent sound, both in terms of natural acoustics and sound system performance, and the new design will uphold and extend this standard of excellence.
