Reflections Year in Review

2019

2019 in Review

2019 was another exciting year for Acentech. We continue to be busy, and one of the exciting byproducts of that is the opportunity to add talented new staff to our organization. We are particularly proud of our growth in our mid-Atlantic office, where we are getting more opportunities to work with old and new clients alike. This past year we also introduced our 3DListening® acoustic simulation technology to the mid-Atlantic region, something that has been a staple of our consulting work here in Cambridge. I find it truly remarkable the innovations our staff have made in making our simulations more realistic than ever. Of course, our clients and the projects they ask us to collaborate on are the most enjoyable part of what we do. Our expanding list of completed projects (and the nationally-recognized architecture and engineering firms we work with) fills us with gratitude and pride. We hope you enjoy the following pages, which are just a snapshot of the 150+ high profile projects we completed in 2019. This year we are bringing something new to our yearbook, a staff spotlight section. I think you’ll enjoy reading about Eric Ungar and his colorful history. Not only has Eric contributed a tremendous amount to the fields of acoustics and vibration, on a personal level he has been a great mentor for me in my career at Acentech. In addition to our consulting work, we’ve also been investing in research and development in the acoustics, vibration and audiovisual design fields. We believe innovation is critical to serving our clients in the best way we can. I look forward to sharing a bit more about that in next year’s yearbook. Thanks to all who were part of our world in 2019, and we look forward seeing what the new decade brings.

Jeffrey A. Zapfe, PhD President

SPOTLIGHT ON | Eric Ungar, EngScD, PE As one of Acentech’s longest-term employees and a former 37-year employee of our parent firm, Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), we are training our spotlight on Eric Ungar. A friendly-mannered vibration engineer with over 50 years of experience, Eric has quite a colorful past! Eric received his early education in Vienna, Austria (where he was born), attended high school in St. Louis, and there received his BSME from Washington University after a three-year stint as a US Army infantry officer in WW II. Since he was a child he had been interested in things that move and was delighted to learn that these could be designed and analyzed via mathematics— something else he loved—so that the field of vibrations, which involves both of his interests, was a natural fit.

His first employment was at Sandia Corporation (now called Sandia Laboratories) in New Mexico, working on second-generation atomic weapons. There he assisted in the design of vibration isolation of nuclear warhead components and also worked out the trajectories of bombs dropped from a fighter aircraft, and the maneuver the aircraft would need to execute to escape the blast. Eric received his MSME degree from the University of New Mexico, where he took evening classes, and then went on to earn his doctorate at New York University. Having taught several different courses related to machinery during his studies, he was appointed to a professorship and continued teaching at NYU. He attended a course at MIT during one summer break and thereafter received a letter from Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), of which he had never heard, inviting him for an interview. Although he had not considered leaving teaching, he accepted this invitation and thereafter received an offer he could not refuse. He likes to say that before he joined BBN he couldn’t even spell “acoustician”...and then he got to be one!

χ

At BBN he soon learned about sound, which shares many aspects with those of vibration, and became immersed in a wide range of consulting and research projects. He eventually received several high-level honors from technical societies and served as the president of the Acoustical Society of America and the Institute for Noise Control Engineering. Eric has authored many articles and white papers on noise and vibration, and even wrote a book, Acoustics from A to Z in rhyming verses! He likes to tell young engineers about the consulting field permitting an engineer to become familiar with many cutting-edge technologies. How else would he have been able to work on projects ranging from submarines to spacecraft, from micro-electronics to telescopes, from the latest medical instrumentation to an experiment deployed on the moon?

His pet peeve regarding the younger generation of engineers is that they tend to rely too heavily on software and often fail to take some of the fundamentals into account. His basic advice:

In addressing any real-world problem, start off with a simplified model based on fundamental principles and make sure that your computed results make practical sense. But above all, work at what you love—then work is a pleasure, not a chore.” Acentech Reflections 2019 | 7
