Dear readers,

For twenty years, the Architects’ Council of Europe has been shaping the conversation on Europe’s built environment and the role of architecture through its active engagement in EU-funded projects. What began as occasional participation has grown into a sustained, strategic effort – one that places the voice of the architectural profession at the heart of European innovation.

These projects may sound technical from the outside, but at their core they are about something simple: making our cities, towns and villages better places to live.

Whether we are designing climate-positive communities, revitalising historic neighbourhoods, or pioneering circular design for a zero-waste future, the work always comes back to people – their needs, their aspirations and the cultural richness of the places they call home.

From 2022 to 2025, we took a hard look at how ACE engages in this work. Together with the Executive Board, the EU Projects Team and the Secretariat, we reformed and streamlined our approach – selecting projects more strategically, aligning them with ACE’s policies and goals and ensuring that results can be used by architects on the ground. These reforms have made us more agile, more focused and better equipped to turn research into real-world impact.

The scale of what we have achieved is remarkable: over two decades, ACE has been involved in more than thirty EU projects, partnering with hundreds of organisations across Europe. This has brought not only funding, but also ideas, skills and networks that extend far beyond any single project. We have worked alongside universities, engineers, planners, heritage experts, entrepreneurs and communities – learning from one another and creating solutions none of us could have developed alone.

These projects are not abstract research exercises. They have produced tools that help architects design healthier workplaces; policy recommendations that shape European building legislation; training programmes that upskill the profession in sustainability, digitalisation and heritage conservation; and design guidelines that combine the urgency of climate action with the beauty and cultural meaning of our built heritage.

At a time when Europe faces complex challenges – from the climate emergency to social fragmentation – architects have a vital role to play. High-quality architecture and urban planning can provide valuable solutions, and EU-funded projects give us the platform, resources and partnerships to deliver on that role. They allow us to demonstrate, with evidence, how architecture can reduce emissions, strengthen communities, protect heritage and create beauty in everyday life.

For exactly two decades, the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) has been actively involved in European Union-funded research and innovation projects spanning architecture and the built environment more broadly. This is no incidental involvement.

It is a deliberate, sustained engagement that connects the architectural profession to Europe’s most advanced research agendas and positions it to influence policy. It also equips architects with the tools, methods and evidence they need to address the environmental, social and cultural challenges.

The European Union invests heavily in research and innovation through programmes such as Intelligent Energy Europe, H2020, Horizon Europe, LIFE, Creative Europe, Erasmus+, Interreg and others. These programmes aim to address the grand societal challenges that define our era: climate change, urbanisation, digital transformation, resource scarcity and social inclusion. Participation in these initiatives allows ACE to bring the voice of Europe’s architects directly into the creation of solutions for these pressing issues.

Through this engagement, ACE has strengthened its position as both a project partner – contributing practitioner knowledge and sector-specific expertise – and a knowledge broker, ensuring that research results are translated into professional practice and policy impact. The projects in which ACE participates span a wide range of themes, from sustainable materials and circular design to urban resilience, adaptive reuse of heritage, health and wellbeing, professional upskilling and digital tools for the built environment.

A Longstanding Commitment: ACE’s History in European Research

The Architects’ Council of Europe first became involved in Europeanfunded projects in 2005, participating by invitation in consortia led by other organisations. These early collaborations not only laid the foundation for a research engagement strategy that has since become a core component of ACE’s activities, but also defined a clear and complementary role within each partnership.

Drawing on its network of national Member Organisations and practitioners, ACE provided direct access to the profession’s expertise, ensuring that research was firmly rooted in real-world practice. At the same time, it served as a powerful dissemination hub, using publications, conferences, workshops, newsletters, policy briefings and workgroups to share results with architects, policymakers, educators and other stakeholders.

Engagement in EU projects has continually contributed to the wider ambitions of ACE:

While the numbers cannot convey the full depth of the projects’ achievements, they speak volumes about ACE’s track record, experience and the expertise it has built: over the past 20 years, Architects’ Council of Europe has participated in 35 EU-funded projects involving approximately 500 partner institutions and enterprises (including a number of architectural practices) from 29 European countries, with a combined project value exceeding €134 million, of which €4.1 million was provided to ACE in support of its contribution to the research work and project activities.

Today, in 2025, the Architects’ Council of Europe is actively engaged in six ongoing research partnerships:

Each of these projects addresses a policy-relevant challenge and produces tangible outputs - guidelines, toolkits, policy recommendations, training modules - that can be directly applied in practice or advocacy.

Why Research Engagement Matters for Architectural Profession

The built environment is at the centre of many of Europe’s most urgent challenges. Buildings and construction account for a substantial share of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use; urban areas are under pressure from population growth, shortage of affordable housing, social inequalities and extreme climate impacts; cultural heritage faces threats from both neglect and overdevelopment.

Addressing these challenges requires more than incremental change - it demands systemic innovation. EU-funded research is one of the few mechanisms capable of mobilising the scale of resources, expertise and cross-border cooperation needed for such transformation.

For the Architects’ Council of Europe, engagement in these projects delivers several strategic benefits:

Access to Cutting-Edge Knowledge – Being at the forefront of research on topics such as low-carbon materials, energy-positive buildings and neighbourhoods, or digital heritage tools means ACE can provide timely guidance to the profession

Network Expansion – Each consortium expands ACE’s connections with universities, institutes, NGOs, industry partners, public agencies, local authorities and other stakeholders, strengthening collaborative capacity

Thematic Focus: Linking Research to ACE’s Policy Priorities The themes of EU-funded projects in which ACE engages align closely with its strategic objectives. Some of the most relevant include:

Building Renovation and Circular Design: Research projects in this area focus on developing building materials with low embodied carbon, high recyclability or regenerative properties. Circular design and construction models - where materials are reused or repurposed rather than discarded or buildings are designed to be disassembled - are essential to reducing waste and resource consumption in the building sector. For example, the DRIVE 0 project explored the decarbonisation of the EU building stock by promoting a consumer-centred, locally based circular renovation process - an essential step toward achieving deep renovation, reducing emissions and meeting environmental targets.

Urban Resilience and Climate Adaptation: Cities face rising temperatures, extreme weather events and other climate-related stresses. ACE participates in projects such as ARV exploring Climate Positive Circular Communities, nature-based solutions, adaptive urban design and integrated planning approaches that enhance resilience while improving quality of life. Projects such as RenoZEB and ABRACADABRA explored off-site construction methods for building stock renovation, developing one-stop-shop affordable solutions that also enhance indoor environmental quality.

Meanwhile, Cultural-E focused on creating a suite of technologies tailored to Europe’s diverse climatic and cultural contexts, enabling the construction of buildings that generate more energy than they consume.

Built Heritage: Some EU projects, such as HeritACE, focus on developing methodologies and innovative technologies to upgrade historic building heritage to meet 21st-century energy performance standards, thereby strengthening cultural resilience and ensuring long-term preservation.

Digital Innovation: Projects such as BIM-SPEED, BIM4EEB and ACCORD developed innovative methodologies and tools to advance the digitalisation of the design and construction industry, harnessing Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twins and 3D scanning. Their results have facilitated collaboration while enhancing efficiency, effectiveness and transparency across processes.

Health, Wellbeing and Social Inclusion: Research increasingly recognises that the built environment profoundly affects human health and wellbeing. Projects such as SONATA explore how design can foster mental and physical health, improve accessibility and promote inclusivity, ensuring that working spaces respond effectively to the needs of diverse users.

Professional Upskilling: Projects such as PROFTRAC, BIMplement, BIMzeED, BUSGoCircular, CiD Alliance, and ARISE have supported the upskilling of architects in areas including circularity, digitalisation, sustainability and energy efficiency, among others. These initiatives highlight the importance of lifelong learning and continuous professional development as essential to keeping the profession at the forefront of innovation and societal needs.

Turning Research into Practice: For ACE, the value of research lies not only in generating new knowledge but in ensuring its practical application. This involves targeted dissemination strategies, capacity-building activities - such as those developed in the NEBULA and DigiPlace projects - and, at times, advocacy for regulatory change.

By fulfilling this translation role, ACE ensures that architects are not passive recipients of innovation but active co-creators of Europe’s sustainable transformation.

Evolution of ACE’s EU-funded Projects and Programmes

ACE’s early project involvement often centred on energy efficiency, reflecting the policy focus of the mid-2000s and early 2010s, including the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Over time, the portfolio grew to encompass broader sustainability concerns – from urban regeneration and the adaptive reuse of heritage to professional skills development and digitalisation – aligning ever more closely with ACE’s policy priorities of high-quality architecture, responsible design, Baukultur and lifelong professional development.

In recent years, engagement has increasingly intersected with the New European Bauhaus (NEB), which emphasises sustainability, inclusion and beauty in the transformation of the built environment. Current projects like ARV, CiD and ARCH-E exemplify this integrated approach, combining environmental performance with cultural and social value.

While much of ACE’s EU-funded work has focused on research and innovation through programmes like Horizon Europe, ACE has also successfully engaged in other EU initiatives that strengthen the sector’s capacity. Since 2017, ACE has participated in the Creative Europe programme, funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC). Through successive calls under this programme, and as the sole beneficiary, ACE has secured funding for three consecutive multi-annual projects: Connecting Architects in Europe (CONNECT ARCH), Networking in Architecture for the Common Good (NET-ARCH) and Sharing a Common Culture of Architecture in Europe (CULTUR-ARCH).

These multi-year initiatives are designed to address cross-border mobility, competitiveness, adaptation to digital technologies, acquisition of new skills and sector-wide networking. They aim to reinforce the ACE network, improve transnational mobility of architects, enhance professional and business skills, and establish an Observatory for the profession. By combining capacity-building with strategic advocacy, these programmes complement ACE’s research activities, ensuring that the profession is not only engaged in generating knowledge but also equipped to apply it effectively across Europe and beyond.

In addition to its role as a full partner and work package leader, ACE has also periodically contributed as an associated partner in projects funded under Creative Europe, INTERREG, and Horizon Europe. Through initiatives like UREHERIT a three-year Cultural Europe project dedicated to preserving Ukraine’s architectural heritage, restoring cultural identity and empowering local communities in post-war rebuilding efforts - as well as NONA (Danube region governance for green investment), Caring Nature (health and care-sector carbon reduction innovation) and Circular Building Convert (transforming vacant offices into affordable housing), ACE extends its engagement into cultural heritage, governance, health and circular housing innovation. These partnerships illustrate the growing diversification of ACE’s participation, demonstrating its capacity to support both the architectural profession and broader European policy objectives.

Building Professional Networks Through Research

One of the less visible but highly significant outcomes of EU-funded project participation is the strengthening of the European architectural network.

Consortia such as ARCH-E bring together architects and ACE Member Organisations from different countries, enabling the exchange of best practices, diverse regulatory frameworks, competition systems and cultural traditions.

Such collaboration fosters mutual understanding and can influence the development of shared professional standards - supporting ACE’s long-term work on mobility and mutual recognition. It also builds personal and institutional relationships that endure beyond the life of a single project, creating a community of practitioners and researchers committed to shared goals.

Looking Ahead: ACE’s Future in EU-funded Projects As European policy priorities evolve, ACE intends to strengthen and optimise its involvement in research projects. Key directions for the future include:

Shape research agendas by engaging earlier in EU consultation processes, ensuring that architectural perspectives are embedded in the framing of future calls

Broaden the thematic scope to include emerging architectural priorities such as climate-adaptive and regenerative design, circular design and material reuse, heritage-sensitive retrofitting, spatial equity in the public realm, the application of artificial intelligence in design and planning and the seamless integration of zero-carbon mobility infrastructure

Enhance knowledge-transfer mechanisms so that research outputs are delivered to architects in practical, readily applicable formats

Embed diversity and inclusion across all research activities to reflect the full breadth of European society and to ensure equitable access to benefits

Through these efforts, the Architects’ Council of Europe will continue to position architects not just as implementers of change, but as leaders and innovators driving Europe’s transition to a sustainable, inclusive and culturally rich future.

Gaze to Stars, Ear to the Ground Upscaling Architects’ Engagement with Research and Innovation1

An architect from New Zealand recently quoted an old Māori wisdom: “With our back upfront, we walk into the future!” Can you visualise this and what can it mean? Is it that we must always be aware of the past and that we also must trust our instinct to go forward even though we cannot see what is ahead? And isn’t that a definition of forecasting, as a process of making informed predictions based on past and present data?

This ACE publication which maps a selection of active engagement on EU research and development projects is a gift to all of us, particularly the ones lucky enough to have witnessed the gradual and steady maturing of our network, its body of work, knowledge, expertise and increased capacity to engage and represent architects in Europe. It is a significant accomplishment as it brings to light a record, an organised and relevant set of data populating these pages. We now have the evidence to assess the direction, level and content to which we have contributed and can draw conclusions and plot further opportunities. We can look into an immense learning about the workings of the EU, discuss the impact of projects, patterns of our partnerships, and a complex, hybrid nature of our field of interest. We can try to understand and reflect on the flexibility, resilience and transformation embedded in these projects and how they shape our profession, profile of architects, scope of work, training and education needs. We can plot our future.

But, we live in interesting times of conflicting visions which are often forced as a given pretext to the living environment. Globally, they shift from extractionist perspectives to regenerative approaches, from renewable energies to dystopian plans for conquest of outer space.2 Digital technologies and the rapid penetration of the AI tools are a significant part of that new economy. Natural phenomena and man-made disasters are becoming entangled so that the mitigation efforts become ineffective, counter-productive and costly. The skills of architects, when appropriately engaged, can make much difference in such a complex context. Notwithstanding the need for continued upskilling, we need to remind and apply our essential skills: to listen, to survey, to record, to assess the scale, to understand the environment and use of space, to develop a brief, to form a team, to design a solution, to oversee the implementation.

All these skills are transferrable to a research process and already used by architects as a form of action research,3where our situational intelligence comes to the fore, by examining the problem, reflecting on it, redesigning the solution and closing the loop.

Therefore, our profession needs to cultivate its skills, adapt to social situation and demonstrate to others the value it brings.4

Our social space is Europe, with its rich diversity, its delicate unity, its potential and ambition to support mobility of people, goods, services and capital, and, its pursuit of the European Green Deal.[5] In the past decades through the ACE and its project engagement, we have raised standing and developed a good working relationship with the EU COM and its institutions, most recently and closely as partner in the New European Bauhaus (NEB) community. The EU’s political goals and ambitions are reflected in its funding instruments and facilities which give a direction to our profession on how and where to get involved. This has to be commensurate with the scale of our operations, predominantly as SME’s, educators or public sector architects. This sectoral profile, as well as our direct involvement with various segments of civil society and public gives us a competitive advantage as partners to advance the ambitions of the NEB in achieving a multi-level and cross-sectoral co-creation, thus helping bridging the systemic gaps and overcoming silos.

A dedicated NEB funding facility as well as other funding schemes[6] present an opportunity for architectural practices and individuals to further their research potential and share practical experience, live projects and accomplishments. This necessitates agility, open-mindedness, flexibility and rewards through meeting European colleagues, learning new skills, seeing new ways of communicating and placemaking on our continent.

I believe that our future is bright and am excited by what is yet to reveal itself.

The ACE has developed a foundation for monitoring, administering, communicating, detecting and processing the information on the key developments in the EU Research and Innovation space with sufficient resources to ensure continuity and creative interaction between the permanent office and members of the network interested and dedicated to this area. I look forward to continuing to cherish and cultivate the working framework which is attracting more and more colleagues from Member organisations to explore developing project collaboration on a variety of themes.

As we refine the sensitivity to contemporary issues of climate change, housing crises, pressures of migration, enormous man-made disasters, our response must be to keep articulating how our skills, knowledge and competence can utilise available resources to envision, design and make our space liveable, safe, with dignity, prosperity, inclusivity, pride, joy and identity. This booklet gives us an added confidence that the EU funded research and innovation projects are for us to choose with measured confidence and enthusiasm.

Shaping European Research in Architecture: ACE’s Role, Impact and Strategy Member Expertise and Teamwork Delivering Innovation, Policy Influence and Practical Impact

European research projects emerge from a structured and highly competitive process. The European Commission, often after a lengthy consultative procedure, identifies priority issues and publishes calls for project proposals under specific funding schemes. These calls are aligned with broader EU strategies – such as the European Green Deal, the Digital Europe Programme, the Urban Agenda for the EU or the New European Bauhaus – and are designed to channel research and innovation capacity towards common objectives.

Once a call is announced, interested organisations form consortia. These partnerships are usually multidisciplinary and multinational, bringing together research institutions, universities, SMEs, industry representatives, NGOs and professional bodies like ACE. At the consortium forming stage, ACE has an opportunity to engage as a Partner, according to its capacity or as an Associate Partner, depending on its priorities. The proposal development phase, which can last around six months, involves defining objectives in response to the call topics, structuring work packages, assigning responsibilities, preparing budgets and ensuring the proposal meets the evaluation criteria for excellence, impact and implementation. Proposals are then subjected to independent peer review by experts engaged by the Europe Commission in relevant fields. Only a small percentage are funded, making participation a marker of both the project’s quality and the consortium’s credibility.

For ACE, this process is far more than a funding opportunity - it is a direct way to influence European research agendas so that they address issues that are central to architectural practice. By participating from the outset, ACE ensures that architectural perspectives shape research questions, methodologies and expected outcomes. This means that project results can directly feed into ACE’s advocacy on policy priorities such as high-quality architecture, sustainable and responsible design, the cultural values of Baukultur and the professional capacity needed for Europe’s green and digital transitions.

Once a project is underway, ACE typically leads work packages or specific tasks, contributes to dissemination activities or focuses on communication and exploitation of results. Throughout, it acts as a bridge between research outputs and the professional community, translating technical findings into practical guidance and evidence-based policy positions. This dual role - as project partner and policy advocate - ensures that the architectural profession not only benefits from innovation but actively helps steer Europe toward a more sustainable, inclusive and culturally rich built environment.

Growth and Milestones

ACE’s engagement in EU projects began gradually in 2005 but quickly gained momentum. Notable peaks occurred in 2010, when three projects were launched, and again in 2018 and 2019, each year marking the start of four new projects. To manage this expanding workload, ACE hired its first dedicated project officer in 2010. By 2019, the EU-funded projects team had grown to three professionals – a structure that has remained stable ever since. To better align project activities with ACE’s policy priorities and optimise resources, the EU-funded Projects section was formally integrated into the newly established Thematic Area 4 – Research and Development in 2022. An Area Coordinator was appointed from the Executive Board, with Selma Harrington serving for the 2022-2023 term and Dubravko Bačić taking over for 2024-2025. These milestones reflect not only an increasing presence in the European research landscape but also the growing recognition of architecture’s role in addressing EU policy priorities such as climate action, digitalisation and cultural sustainability.

The Team: Past and Present

The success of ACE’s participation in EU-funded projects would not have been possible without the expertise, dedication and creativity of a talented group of professionals in the ACE Secretariat. The motivation of former team members laid the foundations for today’s achievements. Eleni Goni and Veronika Schröpfer were instrumental in shaping ACE’s early project work, alongside Secretariat staff including Alain Sagne, Adrian Joyce, Ian Pritchard, Caroline André, Gerardo Ambrosecchia and Giulia Obinu.

In 2019, the team was joined by Gloria Oddo and I. We helped to expand and consolidate ACE’s project activities. Today, under my management, ACE’s involvement is sustained by the diligence of Marta Candidi, Karina Hidalgo Reyes and Swapna Saha, supported by Secretariat colleagues Ian Pritchard, Catalina Olteanu, Julie Deutschmann, Pierre Obajtek and Lukas Bollaert.

The team works with a high degree of internal coordination, holding weekly meetings to monitor projects progress, allocate resources and prepare deliverables, while maintaining close contact with project coordinators and partners across Europe.

Managing ACE’s participation in European research involves balancing technical responsibilities and strategic foresight, ensuring ACE members engagement to produce outputs that are practical and relevant for practitioners and policymakers.

Workgroup and Strategic Agenda

In this work, the team is supported by the ACE EU-funded Research Projects Workgroup, which develops the Strategic Research Agenda and acts as an advisory body to the Executive Board of ACE. The group members, delegated from Member Organisations, are highly qualified, experienced in developmental or research work and linked to universities, architecture practices and cross-disciplinary networks.

The group engages in knowledge exchange through periodic online seminars, thus ensuring a shared understanding of trends and opportunities in line with the newly adopted ACE Research & Innovation Policy which emerged from a detailed consultation process over a period of time.

The Workgroup coordinates participation in proposals, reviews the invitations to join project consortia, organises consultations and provides updates on ongoing projects and future opportunities. To ensure transparency and strategic alignment, invitations to join external consortia are assessed through a structured review process involving staff, the Workgroup and the Executive Board members, with decisions guided by peer review, financial and thematic considerations and ACE’s mission and business plan, as well as geographic spread. This process ensures that ACE’s participation is not only technically oriented but also politically and professionally relevant, allowing the organisation to invest its resources where they can have the greatest impact.

Networks and Partnerships

ACE’s influence also extends through active participation in key European networks. These include the European Construction and Sustainable Built Environment Technology Platform (ECTP) and the European Council for Construction Research, Development and Innovation (ECCREDI). Architects’ Council of Europe also sits on he board of the Built4People Partnership, a Horizon Europe co-programme driving research and innovation in the built environment. Through these networks, the EU Projects team maintains continuous dialogue with stakeholders from across the construction sector, ensuring that architects’ perspectives are consistently represented in broader European research and policy discussions.

Communication and Dissemination

Disseminating project results is central to ACE’s mission. Updates and insights are shared regularly through the ACE Annual Report and Outlook, the ACE Info Newsletter and presentations at General Coordination Meetings and General Assemblies. The newsletter ACE Key to EU Funding provides targeted updates on upcoming calls, while new formats such as the Architects in EU Research podcast highlight project stories and outcomes. In addition to external communication, the EU Projects team manages an internal workflow that ensures results are translated into practical tools and advocacy messages – bridging the gap between European research outputs and the everyday work of architects across Europe.

2005 — Short description The project plans to initiate, grow and sustain a dynamic network of ten Communities of Practice (CoPs) focused on critical areas such as sectoral skills needs, innovative training methods, skills recognition, demand-side mechanisms, national skills roll-out, funding sources and EU synergies. Key objectives of BUSUnited include establishing and supporting these CoPs to foster pan-European collaboration, drive innovation in training methods and facilitate the large-scale deployment of sustainable energy skills. The project aims to engage over 400 stakeholders, including public authorities, training providers, industry representatives, and NGOs, across its activities.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects´ Council of Europe will co-facilitate the Community of Practice on European Synergies to foster cooperation at European and national level. The Architects’ Council of Europe will also lead a task on contributing to the dissemination and communication of the projects.

Expected project results BUSUnited will create several impactful outputs, such as guidelines, training tools, policy briefs, funding recommendations and digital platforms to support the dissemination and uptake of best practices.

2005 — Short description HeriTACE is a EU-funded project that delivers holistic solutions for authorities and architects to envision and govern a sustainable energy future for heritage townhouses in historical neighbourhoods, thus putting the EU Green Deal and New European Bauhaus into practice. The main objective of the HeriTACE project is to produce innovative technical solutions integrated into a holistic and multi-scale renovation approach. During the project , the consortium involved a transdisciplinary team of research institutes, authorities, SMEs and industry experts experienced in design, technology and policymaking in the domains of conservation, buildings, and energy, which will further increase the availability of high-quality solutions for the building conservation sector and open new business opportunities.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects´ Council of Europe leads on Communication and Dissemination activities.

It collaborates with related projects, networks and initiatives to maximise dissemination and communication activities with a view to achieving effective promotion of both the project, its progress and results, as well as reaching the identified project target groups.

Expected project results The project’s relevant results are: the guidelines for designers and architects addressing key steps in the renovation process of historical townhouses following the results of HeriTACE project; the holistic and multi-dimensional assessment model developed to identify the best energy retrofitting solutions for historic buildings and neighborhoods, aiming to streamline decision-making among conservation authorities, building owners and designers the integrated and balanced design guidelines for holistic and optimal deep renovation of historic townhouses; and the technical guidelines for building envelope solutions.

Short description The SONATA (Situation-aware OrchestratioN of AdapTive Architecture) project aims to develop architectural adaptive technologies in workplaces improving the mental health, well-being, productivity,and social relationships of employees and to generate evidencebased recommendations for architectural adaptation that can benefit employees. The project explores how interactive architectural elements-such as movable walls, ceilings and lighting-affect professionals’ well-being and performance by enabling the workplace to adapt to various activities throughout the day, including focused work, one-on-one meetings, and workshops.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects´ Council of Europe is working on the project’s overall participatory development approach by identifying and engaging key stakeholders’ groups, evaluating the costs and benefits of the recommendations based on identified needs, Key Performance Indicators and specific costs, as well as identifying and carrying out the standardisation scenarios for SONATA recommendations. Additionally, the Architects’ Council of Europe contributes in the development of the design, monitoring, along with the communication, dissemination and exploitation of SONATA activities throughout its life span to maximise the impact of its results across different European countries, regions, and industries, building upon existing networking infrastructures, platforms and European projects. The Architects’ Council of Europe will organise the final event of SONATA in Brussels in 2027.

Expected project results One relevant result for architects is the design of the orchestration pattern, defining the standard grid and its considerations regarding circulation areas and escape routes for example. The project will also develop a set of recommendations considering cost benefits of the proposed orchestration, standardisation and ethics.

2005 — Short description The Innovation Alliance Circular Design (CiD) project is developing innovation in Circular Design education by fostering entrepreneurship in academia, with an accelerator programme for students’ start-ups and continuing education courses to upskill in the emerging labour market. This Circular Design Innovation Ecosystem will boost the turn towards a circular construction and design economy.

CiD is rethinking design for a circular economy, orienting multidisciplinary collaboration towards carbon-neutral cities and focusing on bio-based innovation for the built environment using bio-materials from other sectors, creating regional circular systems in renewable materials and installing buildings as bio-machines. Green, digital, resilience and entrepreneurial skills in Circular Design are developed together with relevant actors from High Educational Institutions and Vocational Education and Training with the broader socio-economic environment (Registered Training Organisations, municipalities, civil society and businesses).

In a multidisciplinary approach the Innovation Alliance Circular Design (CiD) addresses the gap in skills and knowledge, in the sectors of architecture, urban design and product/ service design, offering a radically new model on how to link design to circularity and urban transformation. It contributes to the New European Bauhaus’ aim to merge creativity, arts and technology in the context of the Green Deal.

The Architects’ Council of Europe also connects the CiD project to relevant initiatives at European Level such as the New European Bauhaus and the Energy Days at EUSEW. Expected project results The project is developing a set of three academic courses on circular economy, bio-innovation, and urban transformation, the mentoring and continuous professional development courses and the accelerator programme on entrepreneurship skills for the winners of the academic programme competition best ideas.

2005 — Short description The main objective of the ARCH-E project is to promote high-quality architectural solutions for the built environment by increasing the use of architectural design competitions (ADC) in Europe. There are some cross border market barriers for architectural services that need to be overcome such as the national frameworks and traditions of ADC structures and the lack of information exchange. These barriers exclude many architects from participating in the (cross border) market and thus hinders competition. Small/micro-enterprises - with an above-average proportion of female and/or young architects - are particularly affected, which has a detrimental effect on their professional career. Promoting ADCs will lead to a better implementation of the Davos Declaration for Baukultur and of the New European Bauhaus in European planning and building projects on a daily basis and will help to meet the climate challenge and to improve the quality of the built environment.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe leads the communication and dissemination activity working on the project website design and content, visual identity, communication material, newsletters and social media. The Architects’ Council of Europe will also organise the project’s final conference on the 23rd April 2026.

Expected project results ARCH-E provides architects with practical tools and resources to navigate Architectural Design Competitions (ADCs) across Europe. The ADC Map offers country profiles, regulations, expert insights, and good practices to support informed participation. The ARCH-E Glossary explains 190 country-specific terms, helping users understand diverse competition systems, while the Evaluation Tool assess potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks in ADC entries. The ARCH-E Network connects professionals for discussion and collaboration, and the Architects’ Needs Survey gathers data to identify barriers and solutions for a more inclusive ADC landscape. Together, these resources foster transparency, accessibility, and quality in European architectural competitions. After the project closure, these results will be available at ace-cae.eu/adcs-in-europe and the ARCH-e network will be hosted in the ACE HUB (hub.ace-cae.eu).

Short description The ARV project aims at creating Climate Positive Circular Communities (CPCC) in Europe and increasing the building renovation rate in the continent. The overall aim of ARV (Norwegian word for “heritage” or “legacy”) is to demonstrate and validate attractive, resilient, and affordable solutions that significantly speed-up deep energy renovations and deployment of energy and climate measures in the construction and energy industries. The core of the ARV project lies in the six large-scale demonstration projects in six European cities (Oslo in Norway, Sønderborg in Denmark, Karvina in the Czech Republic, Utrecht in the Netherlands, Palma in Spain and Trento in Italy). These communities will be developed as Climate Positive Circular Communities, which is a concept that rests on three main pillars: Circular economy, integration of people, buildings and energy systems and simplicity – achieved by means of digitalization and industrialization.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe led the dissemination and communication activities of the project, overseeing the coordination of the project website, visual identity, brochure, banner, newsletter, and social media content. It also facilitated the organisation of events in the demonstration communities of Palma de Mallorca, Oslo, Sønderborg, and Karvina, as well as events for industry professionals and policymakers, including the final project event. In addition, the Architects’ Council of Europe will contribute to the development of guidelines for designers and architects related to CPCCs. Expected project results ARV provides guidelines and a policy framework for future energy-efficient, circular and digital solutions in the construction industry, such as the Blueprint for planning, (re)design, (re)construction, operation, and use of climate positive circular communities, design configuration for a modular, scalable, Integrated retrofitting concept for positive energy mid- & high-rise buildings embedded in a green neighbourhood in Utrecht, Design guidelines for refurbished and new buildings in the positive circular community in Palma, Karviná, Oslo, Trento and Utrecht, and Policy Recommendation Paper on speeding up the implementation of zeroemission buildings and neighbourhoods through targeted financial policies. 2005 — Short description Cultural-E is a Horizon 2020-funded project advancing Plus Energy Buildings (PEBs) that produce more energy than they consume. The project focuses on modular, climate and culture-responsive solutions for residential buildings across Europe, optimising the valueto-cost ratio while considering local energy habits. It involved the construction and renovation of four demonstration PEBs in France, Germany, Italy, and Norway, showcasing technologies such as advanced ventilation, solar control, and user-centric management strategies to enhance comfort and minimise energy use. Cultural-E emphasises socio-cultural factors in building design, adapting solutions to local customs and lifestyles. Through its integrated approach, Cultural-E contributes to decarbonising Europe’s residential sector and informs future energy-efficient, culturally sensitive building practices.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe led the dissemination and communication activities of Cultural-E, coordinating the project website, visual identity, brochures, banners, newsletters and social media campaigns. The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) led the development of policy positions and guidance on Plus Energy Buildings. By promoting the project’s outputs to architects, policymakers and other stakeholders, ACE helped facilitate the adoption of energy-efficient, culturally responsive building solutions.

Project Results The Cultural-E project successfully advanced the concept of Plus Energy Buildings (PEBs) by developing modular, replicable solutions that integrate climate and cultural considerations. It delivered four demonstration PEBs in France, Germany, Italy and Norway, serving as real-world examples of energy-positive residential buildings. The project developed smart technologies, including a cloud-based House Management System, hybrid ventilation systems, smart air movement systems and decentralised heat pump systems, tailored to diverse European climates and socio-cultural contexts. An interactive map of European geo-clusters was created to support context-specific technology solution sets, while policy recommendations were proposed to overcome cultural and legal barriers and facilitate broader PEB adoption across Europe. Additionally, the project established the Plus Energy Building HUB (PEB HUB), an online repository enabling professionals to share experiences, best practices and lessons learned. These results contribute to the decarbonisation of the European residential sector and promote the adoption of sustainable, culturally sensitive building practices.

Significant Cultural-e results include:

Plus Energy Building (PEB) HUB, a real-world case studies, design guidelines, and insights on adapting PEBs to different climates and cultural contexts and an Interest Group on PEB at Architects’ Council of Europe HUB for information sharing and discussion on the topic.

The project also produced several policy positions and recommendations including Key recommendations for the policy development to foster the construction of PEB, Position Paper on the impact of Plus Energy Buildings on the community, and Position paper for policy-makers showing the impact of PEBs.

Cultural-e delivered a set of design tools including European Climate and Cultural Atlas for Plus Energy Building Research, excel-based tool to assess life cycle economic impact, and a vademecum to guide the designers through PEB climate and cultural design.

The project also handed over the Factsheets reporting solution set description and metrics for each climate-cultural geo-cluster, Guidelines and calculation methods for Lifecycle Environmental Impact Assessment of Plus Energy Buildings, and the Design guidelines with 7 key design principles for Plus Energy Buildings.

All the results are available on the Cultural-E website, the Zenodo Community and the project Youtube Channel.

2005 — Short description The ARISE project is a European Union-funded initiative aimed at transforming the learning and recognition of sustainable energy skills within the construction sector. It developed a comprehensive recognition scheme for digital energy-efficient Building Information Modelling (BIM) construction skills, emphasising a learner-centric approach. Central to this innovation is the introduction of stackable micro-credentials, each corresponding to specific learning modules. These micro-credentials are supported by a blockchain-based system, ensuring secure, transparent and verifiable recognition of acquired competencies. This approach shifts the focus from traditional accreditation to a system based on skills recognition, enhancing the flexibility and accessibility of professional development in the sector.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe was in charge of the dissemination and communication activities of the ARISE project. As the project’s dissemination leader, ACE was responsible for coordinating various communication channels to ensure widespread awareness and engagement. This included managing the project website, establishing the visual identity, producing promotional materials such as brochures and banners, and overseeing the distribution of newsletters. ACE also maintained an active presence on social media platforms and facilitated webinars connected to the BUILDUP portal, European Vocational Skills Week, EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) and Sustainable Places conferences. These efforts were aimed at promoting the project’s objectives and outcomes to a broad audience.

In addition to its communication responsibilities, ACE supported the pilot phase of the ARISE platform by connecting project partners to national architectural bodies, notably the Portuguese Order of Architects.

Project Results The ARISE project developed a comprehensive digital framework to upskill professionals in sustainable energy and Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the construction sector.

Its key outcomes include a user-friendly, gamified e-learning platform offering micro-learning modules and personalised learning pathways, alongside a blockchain-based system of stackable micro-credentials that ensures secure and verifiable recognition of skills. The project also produced guidelines for integrating its training modules into Continuing Professional Development (CPD) systems, facilitating international recognition of sustainable energy competencies and professional mobility across Europe. ARISE’s innovative approach was recognised with the VocTech Future of Skills Award in 2023, highlighting its transformative impact on skills recognition in the sector.

The relevant project results include the ARISE e-learning platform for microlearning on energy efficiency and Building Information Modelling, alongside Guidelines for using ARISE trainings to gain CPD points, Policy recommendations for a pan-European approach to sustainable energy skills recognition and an Overview on EU directives implementation.

2005 — Short description The NEBULA project, funded by the EU under Horizon Europe, aimed to accelerate the transformation of the built environment by activating and nurturing a network of Innovation Clusters across Europe. Building upon the Built4People (B4P) partnership and the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative, NEBULA facilitated cross-border collaboration, peer learning and access to funding for innovators in the construction sector. The project focused on enhancing the visibility and uptake of innovative solutions aligned with NEB principles sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion - by providing tailored support to clusters at various stages of maturity. This included matchmaking, training and the development of strategic plans to integrate emerging clusters into the broader B4P network. NEBULA’s activities culminated in the establishment of a robust network of B4P Innovation Clusters, poised to continue fostering innovation and sustainable practices in the built environment beyond the project’s duration.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) played a pivotal role in the NEBULA project, bridging the Built4People (B4P) Innovation Cluster network with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative. As part of its activities, ACE coordinated and engaged the NEB Advisors community, a network of experts appointed to connect local innovation networks with NEB resources and opportunities. ACE also contributed to the development of the “New European Bauhaus: a Handbook,” a publication aimed at helping stakeholders understand and implement NEB principles in their projects. Additionally, ACE supported a series of six webinars on NEB topics, including organising one focused on NEB and Education, to foster knowledge exchange and promote NEB values across Europe.

Project Results The NEBULA project successfully activated and nurtured a network of Built4People Innovation Clusters (B4PICs), enhancing the visibility and adoption of innovative solutions aligned with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) principles of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion.

Through tailored support, including matchmaking sessions, capacity-building workshops and access to a finance toolbox, NEBULA facilitated the maturation of clusters across five key dimensions: full value-chain coverage, cross-sectoral integration, combined local and national/EU networking, cross-border connections and access to testbeds and demonstration spaces. The project also produced several deliverables, such as the B4P Innovation Cluster Charter, a strategic replication plan and a vade mecum on integrating NEB principles into innovation cycles, providing a roadmap for future cluster development. 2005 — Short description The ACCORD Project, funded by Horizon Europe, aimed to modernise and simplify the building permit process across the EU by developing a digital framework and toolkit. It focused on integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) to enable automated compliance checking throughout the design, construction, renovation and demolition phases of buildings.

The project sought to make permitting more transparent, cost-effective and faster for all stakeholders while ensuring consistency with national regulations. ACCORD emphasised interoperability, semantic rule formalisation and open microservices to support a streamlined, digitalised workflow for building approvals. By combining digital tools with BIM, the project intended to facilitate more efficient, sustainable and climate-friendly construction practices in line with EU objectives.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe played a significant role in the ACCORD Project by leading the development of training materials and organising a series of three webinars targeting IT developers, architects and policymakers. These webinars focused on topics such as BIM-based building permits, rule formalisation processes and digital compliance tools. ACE also contributed to the dissemination and communication activities of the project, including the development of the ACCORD Policy Recommendations for BIM-based building permits. Through these efforts, ACE facilitated knowledge exchange and promoted the adoption of digital solutions in the building permit process.

Project Results The ACCORD Project developed a comprehensive digital framework to modernise building permit processes across the EU. Key outcomes included the creation of 21 training materials, delivered through an e-learning hub, covering topics such as rule formalisation, BIM-based compliance checking and digital permit tools. These materials were complemented by a series of three webinars designed to facilitate interaction between learners and developers, fostering a deeper understanding of the digital permit landscape. The project also produced a policy recommendation document advocating for the adoption of BIM-based building permits, aiming to influence legislative frameworks and standardisation efforts. A landscape review provided insights into existing practices and identified gaps in the current systems. Additionally, the development of roadmap templates offered municipalities and stakeholders a structured approach to implementing digital building permit processes. These resources were piloted in demonstration countries, including Finland, Estonia, Germany, Spain and the UK, showcasing the practical application and benefits of the ACCORD framework.

2005 — Short description BUS-GoCircular was an EU-funded project that addressed the skills gap in circular construction. It developed a practical qualification framework focused on multifunctional green roofs, façades and interior elements, linking tasks to learning outcomes and competencies. The project used train-the-trainer methods to upskill professionals across Europe and engaged stakeholders—companies, homeowners and local authorities— to promote circular green procurement and recognition of circular construction skills.

Its goal was to strengthen both supply and demand for circular construction practices and support the wider adoption of sustainable building methods. The project also fostered regional collaboration by adapting training programmes to local contexts and building capacity within local and national training institutions.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) played a pivotal role in the BUS-GoCircular project, leading its dissemination and communication efforts. This included coordinating the project website, establishing its visual identity and producing key materials such as brochures, banners, newsletters and managing social media channels. ACE also contributed to the mentorship programme and the development of the training package at the European level. Additionally, ACE organised and participated in events like the “Train the Trainers” sessions, enhancing the capacity of professionals across Europe to implement circular construction practices. Through these initiatives, ACE ensured the widespread dissemination of knowledge and resources, fostering a collaborative approach to upskilling the construction workforce in line with circular economy principles.

Project Results The BUS-GoCircular project developed and implemented a circular construction skills qualification framework, focusing on multifunctional green roofs, façades and interior elements.

The project partners also developed materials on the introduction of circular economy, circular design strategies, reuse of building materials, the European policy framework most related to the built environment and how to procure circular construction skills.

Training packages were also developed in Dutch, Bulgarian, Czech, Spanish, Hungarian, Croatian and English to upskill SME’s on circularity have also been produced. 2005 — Short description The SOAR (Strengthening the Security and Resilience of At-Risk Religious Sites and Communities) project, funded by the European Commission, aimed to enhance the protection of places of worship and religious communities within the EU. SOAR focused on improving awareness and preparedness against security threats through training, resources and the development of inclusive networks across all faiths. It conducted research into the causes of terrorist threats, assessed training needs for vulnerable groups and implemented security-by-design principles. The project operated in seven EU countries - France, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Hungary and the Netherlands - engaging religious leaders, security personnel, women, youth, law enforcement and policymakers to strengthen collaboration and resilience.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe contributed to the SOAR project by providing expertise on security-by-design principles for protecting places of worship across the EU. ACE’s role focused on integrating architectural knowledge into guidelines and best practices for enhancing the safety and resilience of religious sites. In addition to its technical contributions, ACE facilitated policy dialogue among architects, planners, religious leaders and public authorities to explore challenges and opportunities for implementing security-bydesign approaches. Through these efforts, ACE supported the development of strategies to improve the protection of religious communities within the EU. Project Results A significant outcome of the project was the identification of architectural and design best practice examples through an EU-wide competition organised by the Architects’ Council of Europe. These examples were used to develop design guidelines aimed at improving the security of religious sites and their associated public spaces for all congregants and visitors.

The guidelines emphasise the integration of security features into the design and fabric of buildings and their urban context, promoting a ‘security by design’ approach. Additionally, the project conducted research into the causes of terrorist threats, assessed training needs for vulnerable groups and implemented security-by-design principles. It provided training, resources and developed inclusive networks across all faiths to improve awareness and preparedness against security threats. The project also organised national policy dialogues in each of the seven countries to share best practices and policy recommendations, fostering a collaborative approach to enhancing the safety and resilience of religious sites.

2005 — Short description The DRIVE 0 project accelerates the decarbonisation of the European building stock through a consumer-centred circular renovation process. It transforms proven deeprenovation products into circular, easy-to-install, prefabricated plug-and-play solutions for building envelope elements. Centered on locally available and recycled materials, these innovations reduce embodied energy and carbon while enhancing economic and environmental performance. DRIVE 0 validates its approach through seven live demonstration cases across diverse European contexts, guiding stakeholders with understandable performance data, materials tracking and attractive business models to make deep renovations both appealing and cost-effective.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe supported DRIVE 0 by contributing to dissemination and outreach. They collaborated on crafting the project’s visual identity, website, brochures, newsletters and videos as part of broader communication efforts. ACE also co-led a series of three stakeholder-targeted “Circular Talks” webinars, offering tailored sessions for architects, social housing providers and property owners to promote the Circular and Consumer-Centred Business Model developed under DRIVE 0. Additionally, ACE helped deliver seven national training courses based on demonstration cases and co-facilitated a capacity-building event in Bologna on circular deep renovation practices.

Project Results DRIVE 0 delivered a range of circular renovation tools and resources that empower consumers and professionals in the deep renovation of residential buildings. A central feature is the Circular Homes digital platform, offering a self-assessment tool to evaluate the circularity of existing homes and receive tailored advice; the platform is available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Greek, Dutch, Estonian and Slovenian. The project also designed seven tailored circular renovation packages for real demonstration buildings, complemented by prefabricated envelope add-ons that consider each building’s circularity level. These packages are further documented in a booklet with policy recommendations, aimed at informing local and EU building policy.

Moreover, DRIVE 0 developed a robust Circular Renovation Solution Atlas, which catalogues technical, environmental, and economic data for circular design strategies across different climatic zones and pilot sites.

2005 — Short description BIM-SPEED aims to advance BIM for the deep renovation of existing residential buildings, targeting at least 60% energy savings and faster project delivery. The project seeks to accelerate BIM adoption across the EU, enabling stakeholders to reduce renovation project durations by at least 30%. Interoperability across a full range of BIM tools is supported via the innovative cloud platform KROQI. BIM-SPEED tested its holistic approach through 13 real demonstration cases across eight countries: Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Spain.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe played an active supporting role in the BIM-SPEED project, particularly in communication, dissemination and capacity-building activities. ACE helped engage the architectural community by organising an annual ‘Industry Day’ webinar within the BIM-SPEED Community of Practice, fostering dialogue between professionals on digital renovation practices. Together with other European umbrella organizations, ACE also co-organised the EU-wide BIM Competition, which showcased innovative applications of BIM in renovation across disciplines. In addition, ACE coordinated training materials and delivered a series of ‘Train the Trainer’ workshops, equipping professionals with knowledge on the BIM-SPEED platform, methodologies and BIM-to-BEM energy simulations. Project Results The BIM-SPEED project achieved significant strides in accelerating the deep renovation of residential buildings through Building Information Modeling (BIM). Using the KROQI cloud platform, it delivered a suite of interoperable tools that support coordinated renovation workflows—enabling at least 60% energy savings and a 30% reduction in project duration through faster data exchange and standardised procedures (such as HVAC integration and plug-and-play renovation components). The project’s cloud-based environment introduced services for file management, renovation planning and stakeholder coordination, all designed to streamline renovation projects significantly. Demonstrations across 13 real-life pilot projects in countries including Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Spain validated the toolkit’s performance and cross-climate applicability. BIM-SPEED also published detailed technical deliverables - such as tools for decision-making, BIM-to-BEM workflows, semantic modelling rules and renovation performance dashboards - along with guidelines for BIM-based procurement, data exchange, and as-built modeling.

Results and training materials, including a “Train-the-Trainers” workshop series and methodology tutorials, are available on the BIM-SPEED platform, its YouTube Channel, and through the Cordis portal.

2005 — Short description The BIMzeED project aims to enhance the construction industry’s capacity by providing education and training focused on technical innovation and digitalisation, particularly in Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB). It develops and pilots 12 Learning Units as Open Educational Resources (OERs), designed for flexible delivery across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers. The project trains and upskills 120 educators across Europe, equipping them to deliver these units to approximately 400–500 construction students, site managers, craftworkers and other professionals, thereby improving their employability and aligning the workforce with green and digital skills demands.

Additionally, ACE organised the final conference of the project as part of the European Vocational Skills Week 2022, providing a platform to present the project’s outcomes and engage with stakeholders. ACE also coordinated the External Advisory Board, facilitating meetings to present project results and gather feedback, ensuring the project’s alignment with industry needs and enhancing its impact.

Project Results The BIMzeED project developed and piloted 12 comprehensive Learning Units (LUs) focusing on Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB). These units were designed to address key aspects of BIM and nZEB integration, including collaborative BIM workflows, worker-focused BIM applications, design and construction of building envelopes and services, commissioning and quality assurance, BIM model use for specification, standardisation and energy modelling, as well as energy simulation and facility management using BIM tools and software (CMMS).

These Learning Units were developed as Open Educational Resources (OERs), compatible with existing Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes across Europe. They were designed for flexible delivery methods, including in-class, online and on-site formats, to accommodate diverse learning environments and schedules. The project also established an e-learning platform to facilitate access to these resources. The Learning Units were piloted to assess their effectiveness and gather feedback.

This pilot testing informed the refinement of the materials to better meet the needs of the target audience.

2005 — Short description RenoZEB is a Horizon 2020 project designed to unlock the nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) renovation market by increasing property value through a new systemic approach to retrofitting. The project focuses on developing cost-effective, prefabricated “plug-and-play” solutions for large-scale deep nZEB renovations. These solutions integrate innovative components, processes and decision-making methodologies to guide all value-chain actors in the nZEB building renovation process. Real-world demonstration cases in Estonia and Spain, along with virtual cases in Bulgaria, Greece and Italy, showcase the replicability of the approach across different building types and climates.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe led the Communication and Dissemination Work Package, working on the development of the project website, visual identity, brochure, banner, newsletter and social media activities. ACE also participated in the preparation of training materials and delivered selected training sessions in Spain, Estonia, and for its members, facilitating knowledge transfer to architects and other building professionals. Additionally, on behalf of RenoZEB, ACE co-organised a policy session on “Scaling-up Deep Energy Retrofit Markets Towards 2030 Targets” during the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2019 in Brussels, contributing to policy dialogue and market awareness across Europe.

Project Results RenoZEB developed and tested a modular Plug and Play façade system to simplify and accelerate deep renovation of existing buildings while improving energy performance.

The project also produced software tools to support façade design and guide decision-making, including the calculation of payback times for investment. Training materials and sessions were developed to facilitate knowledge transfer to architects and other construction professionals. Demonstration cases across Europe validated the approach and showcased its replicability for different building types and climates. 2005 — Short description TripleA-reno aimed to shift the focus from buildings to occupants in the context of energy use, emphasising that people, not buildings, consume energy for comfort. The project sought to overcome barriers to deep renovation by providing occupants and building professionals with the right information and tools to make such renovations attractive, acceptable and affordable hence the name TripleA-reno. By developing a consumer-oriented, performanceevidence-based approach, the project facilitated decision-making and promoted active engagement in the renovation process.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe led the communication and dissemination work package for the TripleA-reno project. This included developing the project’s visual identity, brochures, banners, videos and newsletters. ACE also authored the deliverable on the architectural determinants of building performance and monitored the outcomes of the project’s roadshow.

In 2019, ACE organised an Energy Day during the EU Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels, focusing on ‘Voluntary certification schemes and other integrated approaches in support of deep renovation of buildings.’ Additionally, ACE conducted a complementary value study aimed at teaching architecture students the value of their work, which was presented at the PLEA 2020 conference in Spain.

Project Results The TripleA-reno project delivered a set of innovative, consumer-centered tools and strategies that directly support architects in leading deep energy renovations. Key outcomes include a gamified platform designed to engage occupants throughout the renovation process, allowing architects to involve clients more effectively in design decisions. The project also developed a quality assurance system and multidisciplinary training programmes, improving construction standards and fostering collaboration across trades—essential for architects managing complex renovation projects. A certification system provides transparent, real-performance data on renovated buildings, enabling architects to demonstrate the value and impact of their designs.

Demonstration cases across Europe showcased these approaches, achieving significant energy savings and renewable energy integration, aligning architectural practice with sustainability objectives.

2005 — Short description DigiPLACE conducted a feasibility study for a European Industrial Digital Construction Platform, aiming to modernise the construction industry and strengthen its global competitiveness. The project focused on defining a Reference Architecture Framework (RAF) and strategic guidelines for the future platform, rather than developing the platform itself, which is intended to be implemented through a subsequent EU tender. By establishing technical, organisational and regulatory requirements, DigiPLACE provided the foundation for a shared, interoperable digital ecosystem that could support innovation, efficiency and collaboration across the European construction sector.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe actively participated in the DigiPLACE project, representing architects’ perspectives within the broader stakeholder community. ACE contributed to the development of the project’s Reference Architecture Framework, ensuring that the digital platform’s design aligns with architectural practices and standards. Additionally, ACE played a pivotal role in the dissemination of project outcomes, including the creation of the promotional video and the organisation of the webinar titled “Are Architects Ready for Digitalisation” held in September 2020. This webinar featured a European state-of-the-art analysis, examining the current state of digitalisation in the construction industry and identifying potential areas for knowledge transfer. 2005 — Short description The ICARO project focused on redefining professional profiles and improving training pathways for construction site technicians, with the broader goal of revitalising the construction sector. It tackled the urgent challenge of generational renewal by guiding young people and unemployed individuals into qualified professions, while also addressing gender disparities, as women represented only about 10% of vocational graduates in the field. By integrating Work-Based Learning (WBL) methods and fostering exchange and mobility opportunities within companies, ICARO strengthened the quality and relevance of training, aligning skills development with the evolving demands of the construction industry.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe was instrumental in shaping the ICARO project’s approach to qualification development, serving as the European professional association partner.

ACE supported the designing of the new European Construction Site Technician qualification, refining the curriculum guidelines and fostering alignment with industry needs, especially around generational renewal, inclusion of women and work-based learning methodologies.

ACE also played a key role in the project’s completion by coordinating and supporting the organisation of the final event, where the new qualification framework was officially presented and discussed among stakeholders.

Project Results ICARO delivered a new European qualification profile for Construction Site Technicians, along with updated curricula and training guidelines based on work-based learning (WBL) methods and mobility experiences. The project also produced tools to address generational renewal and gender disparities in the construction sector, aiming to attract young professionals and improve participation of women. For architects, the findings are particularly relevant as they shed light on evolving workforce needs and training models that directly influence project execution, interdisciplinary collaboration and regulatory compliance. By aligning design practices with these capabilities, architects can ensure smoother integration between design and construction. 2005 — Short description The BIMplement project aimed to enhance the quality of nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) construction and renovation by establishing large-scale Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM)-enhanced qualification schemes. These initiatives targeted the entire construction value chain through a cross-disciplinary and cross-level approach, integrating technical, cross-craft, and BIM-related skills and competencies. The project emphasised hands-on and BIM-enhanced workplace learning tools, fostering collaboration among professionals across various trades and levels.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe contributed to the BIMplement project by supporting dissemination and capacity-building activities. In June 2019, ACE organized the Energy Day in Brussels to support upskilling the AEC industry in delivering high-quality, energy-efficient retrofitted buildings using BIM tools, showcasing experiences from France, the Netherlands and Poland. ACE also hosted two webinars: the first in December 2019, “Are we ready for BIM in construction sites? A reality check: Experiences from the ground”, and the second in June 2020, “How can BIMplement be implemented in other European countries?”, sharing practical insights and strategies for wider European adoption. Additionally, ACE developed a stakeholder map to support exploitation and replication of the project’s BIM-enhanced training and qualification schemes.

Project Results The BIMplement project delivered a comprehensive set of tools and resources for architects and the broader AEC sector to support high-quality nZEB construction and renovation. Key outputs include the BIMplement methodology for a BIM-enhanced Qualification Framework, the nZEB Quality and Skills Matrix, the Kit BIMplement comprising 12 one-hour training modules, a maturity scan on BIM skills for airtightness and ventilation, and the BIM catalogue of constructive elements. BIMplement’s methodology was implemented in 49 experimental building sites across France, the Netherlands, Spain, Lithuania and Poland, training over 1,400 professionals, including both blue-collar and white-collar workers. These resources provide practical guidance, upskilling and benchmarking opportunities for professionals, promoting consistent quality across projects. The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe led the work package on dissemination and capacity building, coordinating the delivery of seven international workshops organised by the project’s umbrella associations. ACE also oversaw the development of policy recommendations and the organisation of capacity-building events. Key professional bodies - including RIBA (UK) and OAR (Italy) - participated as speakers at the project’s EU conferences, while CNAPPC (Italy), SADAS-PEA (Greece), CSCAE (Spain), ACA (Norway), BNA (Netherlands), and LAA (Latvia) were invited to contribute to biannual national workshops.

Project Results The ABRACADABRA project delivered a set of integrated tools and recommendations to support deep renovations through volumetric additions and renewable energy systems (AdoREs).

The Technical Toolkit provides guidance for architectural integration of façade pods, rooftop extensions and side-buildings while optimising energy performance in line with Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) standards. The Financial Toolkit includes a payback calculator and cost-benefit model that quantify increased asset value from added volume and energy savings, supporting investment decisions. The Regulatory Toolkit offers a “policy mind-map” that maps local and urban regulations, identifies barriers and proposes adjustments to facilitate AdoREs implementation. Based on these outputs, the project also developed policy recommendations to enhance regulatory frameworks and encourage adoption of energy-efficient volumetric retrofits. Finally, real-world demonstration cases showcased the practical application of these solutions, providing evidence and insights for stakeholders, architects, and investors.

The initiative mapped current and required skills across the sector to identify knowledge gaps and developed an open-access European-level qualification scheme adaptable at national level. It also delivered a free online training platform with self-assessment tools, training materials, webinars and a vibrant train-the-trainer programme.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) played a central role in the PROF-TRAC project as work package leader for dissemination and communication. ACE coordinated the project members’ area on the website, facilitated expert appointments and contributed to the set-up of the European stakeholder network. It was also actively engaged in the Train-the-Trainers programme at both European and national levels, ensuring replication of the project’s training activities across different contexts. In this framework, ACE mobilised its membership to participate directly in the sessions: CNAPPC (Italy) and ZAPS (Slovenia) were consortium partners, while CCA (Czech Republic), AA (Denmark), RIAI (Ireland), OA (Portugal) and CSCAE (Spain) took part in the Train-the-Trainers sessions.

Project Results The PROF-TRAC project mapped the multidisciplinary skills required for nearly zero-energy building (nZEB) projects, identifying gaps across architects, engineers and building managers, and used these insights to develop tailored training programmes and modules addressing those gaps. An open-access online platform was established to provide professionals with resources, webinars and self-assessment tools to support continuous professional development. The project also aligned its training and qualification schemes with the European Qualification Framework, facilitating recognition and mobility across Europe. Finally, a replication and exploitation plan was designed to extend the impact of PROF-TRAC’s outcomes, ensuring integration of its training programs into national education and professional development systems.

2005 — Short description The project (Affordable and Adaptable Public Buildings through Energy Efficient Retrofitting) aimed to enhance the energy performance of public buildings through a systemic, districtscale retrofitting methodology. The project introduced adaptable “kit-based” solutions including super-insulated façade panels utilising vacuum-insulated panels (VIPs), smart windows, smart LED lighting systems and an innovative Smart Dual Thermal Substation for integrated district heating and cooling - designed for affordability and adaptability.

These kits were demonstrated in three real-world public districts representing continental, oceanic and Mediterranean climates, and further validated through virtual deployments.

Across these demonstrations, A2PBEER achieved over 30% energy savings, moving public buildings toward nearly zero-energy standards and showcasing both technical viability and district-level synergies.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe played a key role in the A2PBEER project by leading dissemination activities and contributing to training efforts across the European value chain.

ACE was one of the two principal trainers in the project’s “Train-the-Trainers” workshop, helping to certify 14 trainers from 11 countries, who went on to deliver 13 training sessions including sessions for public stakeholders and SMEs, ultimately training over 310 participants across Europe. In this way, ACE helped ensure that project knowledge—on retrofit technologies, financial tools and best practices - was effectively transmitted to and embedded within the professional community.

Project Results The A2PBEER project delivered a comprehensive retrofitting methodology for public buildings at both building and district scale, validated through demonstration sites in Spain, Turkey and Sweden. Key innovations included prefabricated façade panels with vacuum insulation, advanced smart window systems, high-efficiency LED lighting, and a Smart Dual Thermal Substation for district heating and cooling. To support replication, the project developed web-based design support tools that integrate energy and financial assessment, as well as guidelines for scalable retrofitting strategies adaptable across Europe. Together, these solutions demonstrated that cost-effective retrofitting of public buildings can achieve significant energy savings while meeting nearly zero-energy building (nZEB) standards.

2005 — Short description The Confronting Wicked Problems: Adapting Architectural Education to the New Situation in Europe project was designed to reimagine architectural curricula and teaching methods in response to the complex social, economic and environmental challenges across Europe.

Organised into three thematic think tanks - Sustainability, Heritage and Architectural Design & Professional Knowledge - the project brought together 25 researchers from leading universities and professional organisations across Europe. These think tanks explored how pedagogical frameworks, curricula and role models must evolve to better prepare students for the “new normal” of architectural practice. Outputs included pioneering pedagogical models developed through intensive programmatic workshops, culminating in a comprehensive final report and eleven thematic annexes that were publicly released in 2017.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe actively contributed to the project as a professional partner, ensuring that the perspectives of practicing architects were integrated into the development of new pedagogical models. ACE participated in thematic think tanks, particularly those addressing sustainability and professional knowledge, and provided feedback on how architectural education could better align with the realities of professional practice. In addition, ACE supported the dissemination of project outcomes across its European network, helping to bridge academia and practice and to promote the adoption of the project’s recommendations among educators, practitioners, and policymakers.

Project Results The project’s three think tanks concluded that architectural education must evolve toward curricula that are socially responsive, ethically grounded and closely connected to professional practice. This requires a shift toward case-based, interdisciplinary and project-oriented learning, where teamwork, stakeholder engagement and scenario planning play a central role. Key competencies identified include critical thinking, communication, adaptability and collaborative problem-solving, equipping graduates to address the multifaceted challenges of today’s built environment. The findings also stress the integration of sustainability and heritage as core themes within architectural education, alongside the need to reinforce links between academia and the profession. Furthermore, the project highlights the importance of strengthening continuous professional development (CPD) to support architects throughout their careers. Together, these recommendations aim to prepare architects to become proactive, collaborative agents capable of navigating and shaping Europe’s complex and dynamic societal context.

2005 — Short description The iNSPiRe project was established to support the EU’s goals of reducing energy consumption in buildings by developing and demonstrating innovative, systemic renovation solutions aimed at transforming existing residential and office buildings into nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEBs). With a focus on achieving primary energy consumption below 50 kWh/m²/ year, the project delivered prefabricated, multifunctional “Industrialised Renovation Kits” that integrate envelope, energy generation and distribution technologies. These kits were designed to minimise on-site complexity, installation costs and disruption while maximising energy efficiency and user comfort. iNSPiRe also conducted comprehensive building stock analysis, simulations and lab testing, resulting in a database of over 200.000 energy renovation solution combinations. Real-world demonstrations in Germany and Spain validated the technologies and revealed barriers to market adoption, leading to the proposal of a “one-stop shop” model to streamline access to stakeholders and promote widespread uptake of energy-efficient renovations across Europe.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe contributed to surveys identifying the characteristics, regulations and energy needs of the existing building stock, as well as the comfort requirements of occupants. It also supported the project’s exploitation activities by providing feedback on the demonstration projects, particularly regarding the role of architects. In addition, ACE played a key role in dissemination by organising dedicated workshops for architects to raise awareness and promote the project’s results within the profession.

Project Results The iNSPiRe project developed industrialised, prefabricated retrofit solutions highly relevant to architects seeking to upgrade existing buildings to near-zero energy standards without compromising design quality or occupant comfort. Among the key innovations were modular timber façade kits that integrate insulation, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), optional micro-heat pumps and solar thermal or PV panels, enabling rapid, noninvasive exterior retrofitting with customizable finishes. Prefabricated vertical service shafts were created to incorporate HVAC and electrical systems with minimal interior disruption, preserving original layouts and supporting renovations in historic or spatially constrained contexts. In addition, multifunctional ceiling panels were designed to combine radiant heating and cooling, lighting and sensors, thereby optimising space use while maintaining clean architectural lines. Architects further benefited from typological reference data, PHPP-compatible retrofit simulations and modular kits offering both aesthetic flexibility and industrial scalability.

Short description The LEEMA project developed a new generation of innovative inorganic insulation materials and building insulation masonry components. These so-called “3I materials” are suitable for use in both new constructions and retrofitting projects. They achieve a 70–90% reduction in embodied energy compared to conventional insulation products and offer a 25–30% lower unit cost, making them both environmentally and economically advantageous. Importantly, the materials present no technical, health or environmental drawbacks, ensuring safe and sustainable application across the building sector.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe was responsible for the technical coordination of a preliminary Business Plan to support the industrial application of the new production processes and to promote the uptake of the developed products in the building sector.

This Business Plan outlined strategies for the management, dissemination, exploitation and protection of the knowledge, technologies and materials created during the project.

ACE also ensured that all innovations were adapted to the specific needs of the construction sector and contributed to the development of training activities designed to assist both producers and end-users in effectively adopting the new solutions.

Project Results The EU-funded LEEMA project developed a new class of sustainable insulation materials, known as “3I” for being inorganic, insulating and incombustible, providing safer and more energy-efficient options for both new builds and retrofits. The innovations included lightweight loose filling materials with up to 40% lower density and 60% less embodied energy than conventional products, as well as binders that can replace cement or clay in prefabricated elements without reducing strength. Additional solutions, such as fibre boards and foamed masonry blocks, offered versatile ways to integrate insulation directly into building components, all without technical, health or environmental drawbacks.

2005 — Short description The EU-funded OPEN HOUSE project created a unified methodology to assess building sustainability across Europe by harmonising existing rating systems in line with European standards. The methodology was applied and validated through 67 case studies in 35 countries, with feedback gathered from trained assessors to ensure usability and robustness.

Its development was further informed by the outcomes of the SUPERBUILDINGS initiative and the work of international standardisation committees, helping to establish a common European approach to sustainable building evaluation.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects’ Council of Europe successfully led the task of identifying buildings across Europe to be used for testing the OPEN HOUSE methodology, thereby contributing to the further refinement of the developed baseline. In carrying out this task, ACE mobilised its extensive network of architects throughout Europe, ensuring broad professional engagement in the project. By July 2012, ACE had completed the full sustainability assessment of two office buildings in Belgium, directly supporting the improvement of the methodology. In addition, ACE supervised the sustainability assessment of two buildings in the Netherlands, further strengthening the project’s validation process and European scope.

Project Results The OPEN HOUSE project developed a free, open-access online assessment tool that evaluates building sustainability using weighted indicators tailored to local priorities.

This user-friendly and transparent methodology empowers a wide range of stakeholders architects, engineers, building owners, insurers and policymakers - to assess and improve sustainability performance. Designed for real-world application, the methodology was tested across 67 case studies in 35 countries, with feedback from trained assessors ensuring practical usability. Based on this iterative process and drawing insights from the SUPERBUILDINGS initiative and standardisation committees, the baseline was refined during the final project phase The weighted approach combines impact-driven global indicators with local priorities, fostering innovation, reducing costs and promoting environmentally responsible construction practices.

2005 — Short description The aim of the SHELTER project was to bring together social housing organisations, architects and builders by promoting and facilitating new models of cooperation, inspired by the principles of integrated design, for the energy renovation of the social housing stock.

Within the consortium, the procedures used by the six participating housing organisations were analysed to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Building on this assessment, the project set out to develop, apply and test innovative coordination models tailored to the specific needs of these organisations.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The main role of the Architects’ Council of Europe in the SHELTER project was to provide support and guidance to Social Housing Organisations (SHOs) in coordinating energy renovations of the social housing building stock. Together with two other European Federations and the Research Centre involved, ACE supervised the operational application of the new cooperation models developed by the SHOs, acting as a mentor and offering expert assistance. In this context, ACE identified and mobilised architects with proven experience in the energy retrofitting of social housing, enabling them to share their knowledge and expertise. In addition, ACE was responsible for the project’s communication and dissemination activities. This included sharing results through dedicated channels such as the project website, newsletters and the BUILD UP community, as well as representing the project at European and national events. Project outcomes were also discussed in side-events and workshops targeted at professionals, ensuring broad visibility and uptake of the results.

Project Results The SHELTER project produced a set of practical outcomes designed to support the largescale energy renovation of Europe’s social housing stock. A series of recommendations for public authorities was developed, outlining how to improve the coordination of professionals involved in renovation projects and how to create a more efficient and collaborative process.

For housing providers, the consortium produced a guide for social housing operators, offering concrete strategies and tools to strengthen coordination models and ensure that energy renovation projects deliver better quality and value. In addition, the project conducted a European survey on energy renovation delivery methods, mapping current practices across Member States and identifying innovative approaches with the potential for replication.

Building on this knowledge, the project also published the guide “Innovate to Renovate”, a practical resource designed to inspire and equip stakeholders to adopt more effective models of cooperation for energy retrofitting in the social housing sector.

2005 — Short description The TRAIN REBUILD project aimed to design a comprehensive value chain strategy to shift the mindset of public and private housing owners by emphasising the connection between energy efficiency and building value. It focused on training property owners and local authorities—the demand side of the renovation value chain—and on promoting retrofitting across a broad spectrum of residential buildings, ranging from single-family homes to multi-family complexes, and from private to social housing.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects´ Council of Europe contributed to the planning and execution of a survey to identify best practices relevant to the project. It participated in one laboratory for building professionals, gathering their views on energy efficiency and renewable measures across EU Member States, and helped prioritise which measures property owners should adopt.

ACE also contributed to the development of a training package and toolkit, and supported the organisation of a “train the trainers” meeting. In addition, ACE took part in four European Forum Meetings on training issues related to building retrofits. The long-term strategic outcome of these Forums was to facilitate the implementation of the EU 2020 objectives for the building sector at both regional and national levels.

Project Results The TRAIN REBUILD project delivered three specialised training toolkits: one designed for trainers of property owners’ associations, one for trainers of co-owned multifamily buildings and one for trainers of civil servants from selected local authorities that are members of the Covenant of Mayors in 11 countries. It also developed a manual on financial mechanisms for professionals, which was implemented in 11 countries to strengthen expertise in funding renovation. To further support individual property owners, seven national service packages were created to facilitate the renovation process in seven EU countries. In addition, the project produced 11 national action plans and two European action plans—one addressing property owners’ associations and the other local authorities—designed to scale up renovation efforts across the EU and to assist Member States in preparing the renovation roadmaps required under the EU Energy Efficiency Directive.

Short description The ENHSA III project was a Thematic Network that united an extended consortium of schools of architecture, academic associations, professional organisations and cultural foundations from across Europe. Its aim was to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange within architectural education, supporting the foundation and development of the European Higher Architectural Education Area. Through joint activities, dialogue and the sharing of best practices, the project worked to harmonise approaches, enhance the quality of curricula and foster closer links between education, research, and professional practice. In doing so, ENHSA III contributed to building a more integrated and forwardlooking framework for architectural education in Europe.

The Architects´ Council of Europe involvement The Architects´ Council of Europe played an active role in the Network’s activities, with particular focus on Competence-Based Architectural Education and its integration into the European Higher Education Area. ACE supported the development of educational strategies aimed at equipping graduate architects with the skills needed for sustainable and responsible practice. In addition, it collaborated on Lifelong Learning initiatives in partnership with other professional bodies represented within the Network.

Project Results The ENHSA III project delivered a compelling series of seminars and produced thematic reports that significantly contributed to the dialogue between architectural education and professional practice in Europe. These events gathered heads of architecture schools, curriculum coordinators and architectural scholars in focused forums—such as the ENHSA–EAAE Follow-up Forum and the “Diversity – A Resource in Architectural Education” conference in Bucharest (2005–2006) - to debate the evolving landscape of education across the European Higher Architectural Education Area. Through these seminars and their accompanying reports, ENHSA III fostered critical reflection on key topics such as the integration of the Bologna process, competency-based curriculum redesign, lifelong learning, sustainability and the enhancement of research capacity within undergraduate programs. By bringing together the academic and professional communities, the project helped chart pathways for greater transparency, quality, mobility and innovation in architectural education—laying groundwork for cohesive and forward-looking educational frameworks across the continent.

2005 — Short description The TOWARDS CLASS A project built on and strengthened the European-wide DISPLAY® Campaign, the first initiative aimed at putting the EU Buildings Directive into practice from the grassroots level and preparing the ground for its large-scale implementation. Launched in April 2004, the DISPLAY® Campaign encouraged local authorities to make public the energy and environmental performance of their buildings through a voluntary system developed with and for municipalities, inspired by the labelling approach used for household appliances. While TOWARDS CLASS A ran for three years, the DISPLAY® Campaign was designed to continue for nearly a decade, creating lasting impact across Europe.

Project Results By the end of 2007, the DISPLAY® Campaign had reached impressive scale and visibility.

A total of 302 local authorities from 26 countries, along with 14 private companies, had signed the Display Charter, while more than 7,000 buildings were registered and over 11,000 posters generated. The online tool was made available in nine languages and supported by multilingual guides and resources, ensuring wide accessibility. The campaign also documented 103 exemplary projects from 18 countries, providing valuable models for replication. To reinforce outreach, a broad range of communication materials was produced and the TOWARDS CLASS A competition successfully stimulated innovation among local authorities. Media engagement was strong, with coverage in multiple languages and formats and the national adaptation of the Display Poster began in France, with further countries expected to follow.

2005 — Short description The BUILD FOR ALL project set out to promote a fully inclusive approach to the design and construction of public buildings, ensuring accessibility for all citizens. One of its key achievements was the production of a Reference Manual, which was officially launched at a high-profile event in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in November 2006. The launch received strong backing from three influential Parliamentary Inter-Groups — on Ageing, Disability and Urban:Logement - and enjoyed broad cross-party support. Many Members of the European Parliament attended the event, underlining the project’s importance in shaping a more inclusive built environment across Europe.

2005 — Short description This project set out to strengthen Europe’s construction innovation ecosystem by identifying countries without a National Construction Technology Platform and encouraging the creation of new ones. At the same time, it surveyed and analysed the performance of existing initiatives across Europe. Led by ASM Research Solutions Strategy in Poland, the effort produced an insightful report highlighting each country’s research priorities, offering practical guidance for future collaboration and growth in the sector.

What is Research in Architectural Practice?

Research, Development and Innovation permeate the architectural profession, from formation through practice and continual professional education to post-occupancy evaluation and cultural reflection on completed projects.

Research can be best understood as an “in-depth study of specific problems with the aim of improving knowledge and practices in the field.”1 Development implies the concrete application of research findings in the realization of an architectural project. This often includes innovation, seen as “an improvement of an existing concept by adding new features,” and, at times, leads to invention, defined as “the creation of a new concept, product or service.”

How does ACE engage with Research and Innovation?

The principal function of the ACE is to monitor developments at the EU level, seeking to influence EU policies and legislation that impact architectural practice and the overall quality and sustainability of the built environment. The ACE is dedicated to better understanding technical, environmental, and cultural values, and to promoting the highest standards of education and practice in architecture.2 This is achieved through direct cross-disciplinary involvement in a wide range of EU-funded projects where architects and architecture can make meaningful contributions, engage expertise, gain new knowledge, and impact education, practice and the environment.

What is the ACE’s Capacity for Research and Innovation?

The ACE contributes to project delivery through its permanent Staff, work groups,3 Member Organizations and other stakeholders. It typically acts as a coordinator and facilitator with the ambition to build capacity, broaden the participation of its stakeholders, and enable the engagement of a wider pool of expertise and new knowledge at the intersection of the built environment, society and professional practice. This role is enabled by decision-making procedures4 and other working protocols, based on reviews undertaken during the Executive Board 2020-21 mandate and beyond.5

Who are the Beneficiaries of the ACE’s Engagement

in EU-funded Projects?

The ACE seeks to empower its Member Organizations and architects from practice and education to gain knowledge, skills and the capacity to engage in EU-funded projects, thus contributing to European collaboration, knowledge exchange, and “brain mobility.” The key target beneficiaries of the ACE’s engagement in EU-funded projects are architects, Member Organizations and ACE Staff.
