During my one month Christmas break, I came to appreciate what the study and practice of finance and accounting truly are. For one, I appreciated that in the running of a business, financial matters are extremely important, and sound financial management in a business is very crucial. In the course of my break, I could not find a job directly dealing with finances; however, being the resourceful person that I am, I decided to take up an opportunity that was close to finances. I decided to work as a server in a Japanese Restaurant, Ippei An, in Hong Kong.

Although I was not tasked with any financial responsibilities, my job uniquely placed me in a position through which I came to appreciate the role of accounting in a business. My job details included working part time for one month, 60 hour in a week in challenging positions, ranging from cleaning dishes to a server. These duties required that I be present during the opening and closing of the restaurant, and thus I became accustomed to how sound business management relate to accounting and financing.

The one month job experience increased my interest in studying business and gave me valuable work experience. This experience has greatly affected my perceptions of what working entails and taught me valuable lessons in the process. One of the lessons that I learnt was how to interact with many people of diverse characters and behaviors. For one, I had to teach myself how to separate personal feelings from job matters while at work. An example is when as a server I had to deal with the attitude of the manager, in addition to the constant tantrums and mood fits thrown by impatient customers. I also learnt how to adopt and perform over and beyond one’s call of duty or job regulation. During my time in the restaurant, I had to step up and take up an equally challenging task of washing dishes for three days when the dish washer fell ill. I also learnt valuable coping mechanisms during my time at the restaurant. I taught myself how to always look at the bigger picture and withstand despite the challenges that may be present. Once I learnt how to do this, I found myself enjoying my work, despite the fact that the conditions remained virtually unchanged. I ended up feeling that I had accomplished in the job.
