The first recommendation is to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020 (Young, 2015). To fit into this recommendation, I will make sure to continually upgrade my education level and attain the baccalaureate degree by 2020. Also, I plan to encourage other nurses to get a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Through this, I will have help attained this recommendation by being part of the nurses with the degree and also influencing others to do the same.

The second recommendation is to double the numbers of nurses with doctorates by 2020.

Just like the first recommendation, I can achieve this by advancing my education level to a doctorate and also influencing other nurses to upgrade their educational levels. Focusing on both nursing school and practice will help in creating time and balancing the educational and practice needs. The third recommendation is to ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning. To achieve this, I plan to commit myself to engaging in continuous learning. This is achievable by taking part in educational programs such as CMEs, training, seminars, and workshops among others (Van Leuven, 2014). By engaging in lifelong learning, I will be able to keep up with changes in nursing as well as new advanced trends in care delivery.

Increasing my level of education will greatly affect how I compete in the job market.

First, I will have gained extra skills and knowledge to take on various roles in providing care.

This means that I will have more options to on the fields that I can practice on (Young, 2015).

Hence, will be in a better position to provide specialized care as well as primary care services.

Also, it will make more capable of undertaking advanced roles as well as leadership positions in healthcare organizations. Having a leadership position is beneficial as I will be able to influence the advancement of nursing practice, empower other nurses and champion for better, safe and quality healthcare services (Yoder-Wise, 2014).

IOM FUTURE OF NURSING RECOMMENDATIONS The IOM future of nursing recommendations not only advocate for nurses to advance their education but also to practice to the full extent of their training (Young, 2015). This means that advancing my education will put me in a better place to practice fully and even venture into independent practice in states that allow nurses to do so.
