The Application of Learning Theories in Education
Which among the learning theories provided you with new information? How would you apply this in your practice?
Learning theories refer to conceptual frameworks describing the manner in which students absorb, process, and retain new information during learning. These theories focus on different factors including environmental, emotional and cognitive factors that influence understanding and worldview of students. The five major theories of learning are experimentalism, cognitivism, constructivism, behaviorism, and social and contextual theories. The learning theory which provided me with new information is the cognitivism theory. This theory is the dominant learning paradigm.

It proposes that learning takes place through complex mental activities such as thinking, reflection, and memory. The cognitivism theory focuses on the process involved in the transmission of information from an experienced person to a person with minimal knowledge on a particular issue. An evaluation of details concerning the cognitivism theory reveals that behavior of human beings is a resultant factor of articulated though processes rather than a mere response to stimuli (Harasim, 2017). Behavioral change is an indication of the mental processes in an individual’s head. The mind of a learner acts as a mirror from which new skills and knowledge are reflected.
The cognitivism theory of learning can be applied in practice to establish a base on which to mentor junior nurses. An experienced nurse can look out for behavioral change among new nurses to determine whether learning activities are achieving the anticipated benefits. The cognitivism theory of learning can also be applied in passing done novel skills to other healthcare staffers. This theory recognizes that learners play an active role in seeking effective ways of processing and understanding the information received during learning (Schunk, 2015).
Nurse trainers can, therefore, identify the most effective ways of propagating new information to other nurses.
